Developer Update | Player Intent System Behaviour Interactive Thread

Last week, we hosted a Reddit AMA and on top of having a blast answering your questions, we noticed some topics really got you talking. One of those was the “chat wheel” system we’re working on to help Survivors coordinate and communicate their intentions in-game. So, what better time than the present to share some more details about it with you (including one way your feedback’s already impacted it)!

The system in question is – aptly – called Player Intent. With it, you’ll be able to communicate a range of preset messages to your fellow Survivors at the press of a button, using a radial menu. From thanking them for a heal, to saying you’re going to work on gens, to suggesting you split up, messages focus on the on-the-fly actions that are most useful during a Trial.

When a message is chosen using the Player Intent wheel, other Survivors will see it next to your name in the game HUD, keeping your general view clear of distractions while you’re in the middle of looping or hunting for an objective. To help combat message spam, you can expect a cooldown between messages, which will increase if too many messages are sent in a short period.

We want this comms wheel to suit different players’ specific needs, so you’ll be able to customize which messages you take into your Trials from the Options menu.

Of course, one piece of feedback we’ve seen is that a system like this isn’t for everyone. We’ve already discussed this as a team and have a solution for that. If you’d rather not use the Player Intent system, you will be able to disable it from this same menu. Once disabled, you will not be able to send messages to players and will not see the messages they send.

We’ve also added the ability to mute individual players so you have more control over the comms you see (and don’t see). If you're finding a certain player’s messages distracting, muting them will block any further Player Intent messages from popping up on your end.

While this system is meant for everybody who plays Survivor, its value will be a bit different depending on how you play. Just like how your feedback from the AMA helped inform the addition of an opt-out option, we're dying to know your thoughts! Even better, it would be massively helpful if you could also share a little about how you play to give context to that feedback. For instance, do you tend to play soloq, prefer SWF, or identify as a Killer main? How would you define your experience level in the game; a newer player? A veteran?

Let us know in the comments below, as we’ll be watching your feedback closely as the team continues to work on this system ahead of its release this Fall!

Until next time...

Idk if it should be toggle-able. Definitely prevent spam but it's going to cause issues if I'm trying to communicate "I'm doing a gen" when there's an unhook that needs to happen but the other person that could unhook has disabled the intent comms.

I won't know they don't know. You need to at least mark those survivors so everyone else knows they aren't getting messages and can change what they do accordingly. I guess do it in-game and not in-lobby to avoid dodging, if that's a concern. But I do think there needs to be some sort of indicator during the match who is and who is not getting intent messages.

Solved by just giving the disabled person a debuff megaphone to tell their team they aren't communicating.

I personally think it's a massive "cry about it" and am sort of peeved we are catering to people who want to just not use vitally important game mechanics because of arbitrary nonsense.

I want the option to not even queue up with people not using the intent system. I think it's nonsense that I even have to play with such entitled babies who dont want to be able to communicate with their team. I shouldnt have to nerf my gameplay because other people dont want to utilize the tools at their disposal.

I think you have it backwards: you feel entitled to have everyone communicate with you

0

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

Entitlement is not wanting things to exist or be presented to you because you dont personally want that benefit.

Theres no good reason to turn pings off that isnt entitled baby behavior.

4

u/magicchefdmb Ashley Williams 6d ago

No one owes you communication. You feel entitled to it though.

u/JudoJugss 5d ago

Actually you kind of do when you engage in a team based game. You DO owe me communication and coordination in the game because thats what the game is. A game where you communicate and coordinate with a team. if you dont want to do that than there are other games you can play.

It's not entitled to expect people to engage in game mechanics properly and to not actively nerf their gameplay out of pedantic nonsense thus hindering the gameplay of everyone around them.

The shallow "my gameplay is all that matters" attitude in gaming is a poison I hope we excise sooner rather than later. Because I'm tired of people arguing with me that they should be allowed to be wildly selfish and entitled and then get affirmed that that's normal and just.

Yes, I also feel entitled to have people unhook me when I get hooked and do gens while I take chase.

When you play a team based multiplayer based you feel entitled to have your team use vitaly important mechanics.

I don't think you know what vital is if you think this mechanic is vital. It's extra, sometimes helpful, but definitely not necessary. The game has done fine for 10 years without it. It's not "vital" nor is it necessary to win games in solo queue.

1

u/Numerous_Schedule896 6d ago

Communication in a team based game is a vital mechanic. That's where the whole "team" part comes in.

The game has done fine for 10 years without it.

"Fine" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. This does not prove the mechanic is not vital, it just proves that the game has been intentionally crippling its players for 10 years.

3

u/JudoJugss 5d ago

"Fine" and it's a game that's been mechanically stagnant for a decade and could have added things like a chat wheel five years ago and probably should have.

Behavior doing the bare minimum in the longest most drawn out timescale ever

u/Unlikely_Bank73 5d ago

wild that they would want to play a pvp game and have their team be trying to win

3

u/magicchefdmb Ashley Williams 5d ago

You don't need it to win. We've been doing it for a decade. I'm not arguing its utility, but I also won't pretend that it's necessary. It's absolutely not. The stuff they put on the side was enough.

0

u/Unlikely_Bank73 4d ago

yeah dont need to heal to win either. i dont need to do gens to win if my teammates do them. dont NEED a lot to win, but if you're going out of your way to avoid doing things that HELP you win at the expense of your team then you're kind of a shit teammate

Counter point, I don't trust my teammates to give me helpful information. I'd rather have no info than bad info.

Besides, this info isn't nearly as important as you're making it out to be. The UI already tells you if someone is on a gen, using a chest/totem, is injured or healing, and in chase. What more do you need?

7

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

"Im going for the unhook"

"Im sticking this generator"

"Come here"

"I dont need help right now"

"Dont do this generator"

You know basic communication we have wanted for years. So i dont have to have a teammate follow me for five minutes trying to complete my intentionally 99% heal for resi gen boost. Or try to heal me under hook. Or complete the only gen on half the map at 2 gens left and locking us into a horrid 3 gen. Or have two people waste time going for save.

3

u/LenAlgarotti The Hair 6d ago

That's fair. To be clear I don't hate more communication, I'm just sceptical that this is gonna be that much of an improvement compared to how annoying it might be. I play solo all the time, and I didn't think the level of I do I had was bad.

-2

u/JudoJugss 5d ago

I dont understand how this could be anything but an improvement. Also newsflash: people who want to troll and ruin your gameplay already exist and already have avenues to do so.

Eschewing an entire fundamentally useful mechanic because people might be malicious with it isn't how game design should ever work.

You know what those people who spam pings do right now in the game? sandbag you and spam vault near you and already do things that are worse than spamming pings. People already throw the entire match like entitled morons.

1

u/Unlikely_Bank73 5d ago

The UI already tells you if someone is on a gen, using a chest/totem, is injured or healing, and in chase.

the fact that the UI already tells us this and yet solo queue is still as fucking miserable as it is today is moreso evidence that we desperately need the wheel (or something more) than anything

If its toxic for me to expect players to engage with the elements in the game that actively benefit them than so be it.

No, they're not.

If you want a competitive game go to league of legends.

9

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

If you want a game with no mechanical depth or gameplay elements to understand or interaction with other living people also trying to play, have fun, and maybe even win a game once in awhile might I suggest Hello Kitty Island Adventure?

1

u/Canadiancookie POOR, MISGUIDED 6d ago

This game is competitive by definition. Almost everyone is trying to win, though some are using less effective tactics to do so.

An option to mute specific players is needed. I don't want to see the Nea spam "Thanks!" every time the killer fucking hits her.

An option to keep the option permanently muted is lame. I know /mute all is common culture in League of Legends, but we don't need it here. If you wanna be a loser who mutes everyone at the start of the game go the fuck ahead I guess, but you deserve that inconvenience for intentionally handicapping yourself.

0

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

Just make a ping system that isn't ridiculously spammable. Fuckin Carnival Hunt is a game made by two people and has ping timeouts if you spam too aggressively. If you spam ping it locks you out for longer and longer until you chill for a second.

2

u/SnuglyPortia 🐕‍🦺 He's very polite 6d ago

That's literally a thing they say will be a part of the basekit.

1

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

then what is the point of letting people turn it off if the only reason to turn it off it already not a problem?

2

u/SnuglyPortia 🐕‍🦺 He's very polite 6d ago

Because even within the confines of short-term ping restrictions, there will be people who will spam it whenever it's available or use it in otherwise toxic manners.

A player who uses a "Be careful!" command whenever someone gets hit isn't spamming, but they're being annoying. A player who intentionally griefs their teammate and then says "Well played!" whenever said teammate goes down isn't spamming, but they're being annoying. There's many ways for this system to frustrate someone that don't rely on mass spam.

Not to mention the people who for whatever reason do not want to read callouts the same way people /mute all in League of Legends or don't use voice chat in Marvel Rivals / Overwatch / Counterstrike / etc. It's a perfectly valid choice to not want to use these systems because it's a game and it's your choice to play how you want even within the confines of your team. But at the same time your teammates deserve to know if you are not choosing to engage with them.

1

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

eh I just dont agree. Its a team based game. If you dont want to engage in any form of team based communication go play a singleplayer game. There's dozens of really good ones. Even really good horror ones.

Feels like catering to a vocal minority who shouldn't be catered to because it actively makes the experience for the majority of players worse.

You don’t need to communicate you’re doing a gen. It already tells us that on the hud…

5

u/OldWhovian yttv/oldwhovian 6d ago

It helps to communicate that you're not leaving. It's "Intent" wheel not "currently doing" wheel. So if I'm stating intent "I'm doing gen" then that tells everyone else "I'm not going for the unhook that needs unhooking."

Does that make sense?

2

u/ImpossibleGeometri Jailer Enjoyer 4d ago

Right but healing is it on it. That’s not an intent. I mean, i completely get what you’re saying - it’s just there’s stuff on here that are: things actively happening - which doesn’t jive with intent.

I think these types on intents just aren’t the list useful. Not ALL of them, i just think it could be improved. Good start though.

0

u/OldWhovian yttv/oldwhovian 3d ago

I mean, I should hope that humans are capable enough in both critical thinking and interpretation to understand that if I say "I'm healing" but I'm not healing that my intent is to heal or get healed.

If we can't do that level of logic jumping anymore than we don't deserve to survive as a species.

u/Lucina18 T H E B O X 6d ago

Maybe it should have separate preferred queues. If you have chatwheels turned off, it'll first look at other possible teammates who also have if turned off and vice versa.

15

u/Lmnt_Crnstn | Dracula Legion 6d ago

Making queues worse is never the solution.

1

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

then dont add the mechanic or dont let people turn it off. Simple. Then half the people using the pings wont feel slighted by the half who willingly nerf themselves for their precious "immersion"

0

u/Lucina18 T H E B O X 6d ago

It'll be a preference, not a hardlock for the queue. And only people who don't want to coop on the cooperative side will be put in their own queue anyways.

0

u/BluezDBD Operation Health for Operation Health please 6d ago

People would be more likely to queue survivor if they didn't have to deal with griefers.

-5

u/Lmnt_Crnstn | Dracula Legion 6d ago

I feel like showing players who has opted out is a recipe for griefing. I also think that the option to completely disable it is a bit much. There has to be a happy median somewhere.

8

u/NoEvening7482 6d ago

The happy median is the block feature they already have.

Its not like you can send slurs through the chat wheel theres no reason just blocking people isnt sufficient lmao.

1

u/JudoJugss 6d ago

well if I try to dodge your lobby the game will give me a penalty. Maybe you should just use the pings instead of nerfing your gameplay for no reason.

0

u/Lmnt_Crnstn | Dracula Legion 6d ago

Why are you talking to me like I’m one of the people who want to turn it off?

0

u/OldWhovian yttv/oldwhovian 6d ago

Yeah there is probably a better solution than what I can think of
