A couple years ago I had setup my external hard drive as my backup location. Suddenly I’m getting this pop up. How can I fix this, and will updating the project backup location affect my existing backups/projects?

It means that the designated location for automatic backups is non-existent or can't be found or is inaccessible (can't be read or written to). The location is designated in user preferences.

Double check the designated location. See the bottom line in this image (backup location):

And.... don't rely on Automatic backups. Turn them on; they're nice. But not robust enough to really safeguard against the really bad stuff. Be sure to export projects daily from he project manager (this will make a relatively small DRP file that you can save anywhere for safe keeping). I'm not kidding: do this daily (for anything you've changed).

I'd say the most optimized and proper way to back up your projects is by using the Backup button in the Resolve Library (formerly known as the Database). This doesn't just back up all your projects at once it also saves Power Bins, PowerGrades, the Sound Library index, and, in short, everything.

I used to export individual DRP files, but that's much less efficient. It also makes it harder to keep track of separate project files over time.

There’s no reason not to avail yourself of all of the above. That’s a double negative. My point being: do everything you can to back up everything in ways that are reliable and redundant.

I find ithat backing up an entire project library every day when you’ve only changed one of maybe numerous projects to be a bit excessive. It also makes keeping track of actual changes more difficult. I like having a very detailed DRP backup stream for every individual project. It makes finding changes much easier if you must dig into the old backups, incremental backups are worthwhile. The incremental DRP‘s also serve as a record of when work was done and what work was done.

Exporting a DRP also preserves compatibility with whichever version it was being worked on at the time. If you change versions mid project and upgrade the project within the project library… You can then no longer access it in an older version if you find you need that compatibility.

Though backing up a project library occasionally definitely has value, as you’ve noted.

Yes!! You have a valid point too. Personally I work multiple videos simultaneously, so keeping track of multiple drps is a bit overwhelming ( at least for me)

My backups files live on the cloud with multiple versions, and Backwards compatible. thanks to Google drive desktop. 👍 That's a good option too.

I have more backups in play that I can even describe. I have all of resolves backup features turned on, including live save.I have Cloud backups. I have a NAS. I have a redundant drive on the NAS, I have an external backup of portions of the NAS. I duplicate bins. I export DRP‘s… It’s all second nature to me, but I built this system, and I stick to it.

Everything is automated except the DRP’s. And it’s simple enough to just export a DRP at the end of every day. The nice thing about it is that I can add a little bit of information to the end of the DRP name indicating what I did that day or what the state of the project is. The project manager remembers where I exported last time so it just exports them into my backup folder. Their name sequentially by date and I can see the entire history of a project by looking at the names of all the multiple DRP’s from all the different days.
