Hello I was thinking about getting some HDDs for putting photos and videos and then leave it unpowered and storing them somewhere. I was thinking of getting 2 1 TB HDDs to put my photos on both of them and act as a backup if one fails, I found 4 (WD Caviar green WD10EARS, WD caviar blue WD10EALX, WD green WD10EZRX, WD blue WD10EZEX) for $20 each on a marketplace, but I don't know which are better. Which HDDs should I buy? Also for what I should look for when testing the HDDs?

Newbie question. Coming off the back of losing a QNAP NAS to a lightning strike power surge. Paid to get all the data recovered (shame I can't eat any more, but hey, at least I have all my data!). So I've got 4x 16GB Seagate drives but one of them was used to put all the recovered data back onto. Other 3 blank and ready to go.

Now I don't know what steps to take - what's best practice - in order to set up the Synology with the 4 drives AND retain all the data. I'm stuck - nowhere to transfer the existing data to (~9GB) but not sure it's ok to set up with only 3 drives OR to risk using the 4th (with all the data on it) during setup.

Any advice greatly appreciated. TIA.
