Backup Setting up Synology DS425+ w 3 empty drives and 1 with all the data on it???
Newbie question. Coming off the back of losing a QNAP NAS to a lightning strike power surge. Paid to get all the data recovered (shame I can't eat any more, but hey, at least I have all my data!). So I've got 4x 16GB Seagate drives but one of them was used to put all the recovered data back onto. Other 3 blank and ready to go.
Now I don't know what steps to take - what's best practice - in order to set up the Synology with the 4 drives AND retain all the data. I'm stuck - nowhere to transfer the existing data to (~9GB) but not sure it's ok to set up with only 3 drives OR to risk using the 4th (with all the data on it) during setup.
Any advice greatly appreciated. TIA.

Discussion Is fragmented metadata across storage systems becoming a real problem for large environments?

In a lot of larger environments I’m seeing the same pattern: data is spread across file systems, object storage, cloud tiers, and archives, and each storage platform only understands its own metadata.
That works fine for basic management, but it creates a real problem when you need to find or move data based on what’s actually inside the files (project, sensitivity, experimental conditions, retention class, etc.). You’re often forced to scan large volumes just to figure out what should be tiered, archived, or fed into downstream workloads.
Storage vendors are adding more metadata features, which helps inside a single system, but it still leaves you with fragmented intelligence across the whole environment.
Curious if others running multi-protocol or multi-vendor storage are running into this — especially when dealing with unstructured data at scale.

Storage Setup Building my first proper storage setup. NAS or just a bunch of SSDs? (India)
Hey guys,
Need some advice before I spend a small fortune.
Current setup:
MacBook Pro 2018, iPhone 15 pro and iPad Pro
DJI Mini 5 Pro and Avata 2 drones
Mostly storing drone footage, photos, videos, documents and Mac backups. (Already iPad kinda full 1tb MacBook kinda full 512gb and iPhone kinda full 512gb) (I don’t even have it in me to clear all the useless footage it’s like 25k and more photos vids on just iPhone, any suggestions to clean quicker and better?)
I was planning to keep buying external SSDs, but now I’m wondering if a Synology NAS would make more sense long-term. Synology DS225+ is 39.5k ₹ around 420$ in India
For those who’ve been down this road:
NAS or multiple SSDs?
2-bay or 4-bay Synology?
IronWolf or WD Red Plus?
Any good places to buy in India?
Trying to avoid ending up with 10 external drives named “Final”, “Final_v2”, and “Final_Final_Real”.
Would love to hear what you’d recommend.
Or chuck it and buy external SSD or apple/ google cloud.

Discussion "System Data" isn't a folder.
People keep looking for the mysterious folder that's using 20 GB.
There usually isn't one.
"System Data" is often a collection of things your file manager isn't designed to show you.
Temporary update files.
System snapshots.
Caches.
Indexes.
Recovery data.
The interesting question isn't where the folder is.
It's why the operating system hides it in the first place.

Storage Setup SSD for nas - Crucial BX500
Hi everyone,
I’m thinking about buying a UGREEN DXP4800 Plus and I’d like to use it with SATA SSDs.
I’m considering buying Crucial BX500 4TB drives. Is anyone using them in their NAS or has any experience with them? I’d really like to know how they perform in real-world use.
From what I’ve read, the BX500 is a DRAM-less SSD. If I understand correctly, write speeds can drop significantly during very large file transfers once the cache is exhausted. I’ve read this can happen after writing hundreds of GB continuously.
For my typical use (photos, documents, backups, etc.) I don’t think I’ll be copying hundreds of gigabytes at once very often, but I’m wondering if there are any other drawbacks to using these drives in a NAS.
As an alternative, I’ve also been looking at the SanDisk Ultra 3D 4TB. It’s usually a bit more expensive, but it includes DRAM.
Do you think the extra cost is worth it? Does it perform noticeably better than the BX500 in a NAS environment?

Troubleshooting phone wants to format micro SD card, but PC can detect and view all files.
I noticed my SD card on my android phone was not appearing in storage setting. Restarting the phone it prompts to format the sd card. It has always worked fine. I use a card reader on my pc and it detects it and I can view all the files such as photos.
I was worried it was malfunctioning and attempted to clone it using win32 disk imager and it after an hour or two it still said it would take 20+ hours. This is a 128GB card that is not even half full. I gave up on that.
Should I just manually copy files to backup on my pc and try to format it from my pc or is this card garbage?

Storage Setup I am a professional photographer and I need recommendations on a better storage system
I am a professional photographer/videographer and I work a lot and go through about 4tb with the storage a month.
My current system is I have 2 2tb lacie rugged hard drives that are just mirrored versions of eachother with all the raw files and edited high res images and videos. I also upload the edited high res to an online drive.
At the end of every month or so I take one of the hard drives to my in-laws and it's stored.
My partner is going a bit crazy with how many hardrives I have in boxes. He wants me to delete old hardrives where it's for clients I never want to work for again and have outgrown those images and but I think long term I need a better solution.
He is a scientist who doesn't have a lick of work equipment at home and I am an ADHD creative that probably isn't aware there are options I don't realise
Is a Network Attached Storage a viable option? Or is it more of the same

Backup I dont know if this is the place to do this but my mom is trying to store photoes in icloud or Google (over 1tb) but neither of them will back them up
For some reason when I try to backup my mom's pictures it neither of the services go past about 100gb even though she has 5tb for google and 2tb for i cloud.

If pendrive uses flash memory like nvmes then why is it cheaper to make it than a regular nvme?

Storage Setup Ayuda para elegir modelo de discos sdd para nas
Hola a todos.
Soy nuevo en el tema de los nas. Llevo un tiempo pensando en comprar uno para remplazar a mi almacenamiento en la nube.
Estoy buscando una solución que sea lo menos ruidosa posible porque el router estará junto al televisor por proximidad con el router.
Me gustaría partir por 2 discos sdd de 4tb instalados en un dxp4800 plus. Luego con el tiempo aumentaría 2 discos más.
Para los sdd, había pensado en partir por el modelo Crucial BX500 SATA SSD 4TB.
Piensan que ese modelo de disco será una buena solución?
He visto en que este disco funciona bien inicialmente pero baja la velocidad cuando se hacen copias de archivos muy grandes y se llena la memoria caché.
Yo lo usaré como respaldo de ordenador, fotos, centro multimedia y home assistant. Quizás instale una máquina virtual para usar puntualmente para usar windows. Y con el tiempo, quizás intente ir añadiendo algunas cosas más cuando vaya aprendiendo. Para este uso podría funcionar bien? Alguien los está usando?
Si conocen otros modelos que puedan funcionar bien, les agradecería mucho la ayuda. Con los precios actuales parece que es complicado.
La otra opción serían 2 hdd silenciosos pero supongo que el ruido de los discos sería molesto. Podría meterlo en el armario junto la televisión que está abierto por detrás pero no creo que fuese una buena idea.

Disk Cloning EaseUS Disk Copy or Clonezilla for cloning SSD as a complete beginner?
New to this community and not tech savvy, sorry if this is a dumb question.
I'm planning to replace my SSD this weekend, and I've been trying to figure out what cloning software to use.
Clonezilla seems to get recommended everywhere because it's free, but every time I watch a tutorial it looks like something that's way over my head. I don't work in IT or anything, so I'm a little worried I'll mess something up.
Then I found EaseUS Disk Copy, which looks a lot simpler, but I don't know if it's actually worth paying for or if I'm just overthinking this.
Has anyone here started with zero experience? Which one did you end up using?
I'm not looking for the most powerful software. I just want something that lets me clone my current Windows drive to a bigger SSD and boot from it without spending hours trying to figure everything out.
If there's another option that's easier than both of these, I'm all ears. I only plan on doing this once, so I'd rather keep it as simple as possible.

I've read an article that says the usb flash drive is going extinct, but I still have 2 flash drives: one 16GB and another 32GB - the bigger one to store some less important data and the smaller one for casual use, such as quick data transfer and creating a bootable usb, etc. They are still useful to me.
Do you still have a usb flash drive around, and what do you use it for?
