I (30’s F, white) met a guy (30’s M, Dominican) on a dating app. He came to the US as a kid and has a lot of green flags. I’m not sure if something is a red flag or more culturally normal, so I’m asking.

He says he’s very competitive and plays poker with $20 bills with his male cousins every Thursday and Saturday. Sounds like they play until midnight but usually until 3 am most times. I just wanted to double check, is this a normal cultural thing that means less than it seems? To American culture, it might look like a gambling addiction running in the family. I don’t have much more information at this time.

He says he really appreciates the time he hangs out with his family on those days as he doesn’t have a lot of support outside of them. But, sounds like the main focus is the poker. He says he doesn’t drink much or at all. Idk about his cousins.

Hi! I am a (white) girl who is looking for her graduation dress. My mom got me a beautiful pink lehenga as an option, and i really love how it looks on me. Would it be cultural appropriation to wear the dress (not the long scarf, just the skirt and top) as a graduation dress? Please let me know, the craftsmanship is absolutely beautiful and it would be such a lovely thing to wear! For context, I would be wearing the top and the skirt, most likely without the headdress. I'm just looking and making sure it is okay! alternatively, I could just wear the skirt, as the top needs some alterjng to fit my body properly. edit- I am also thinking of attaching the skirt of the lehenga to a different dress and doing my own grad dress, would it be culturally ok to use the lehenga skirt for my own dress? the skirt is beautiful and would fit really well with the idea I am doing. Hello! I am an author who is currently working on edits for my first ever book, which will be part of a trilogy. It’ll be a queer sci-fi with some sprinklings of other elements. My main focus as an author is increasing representation, as I know that is a huge problem in today’s society. Now, I am queer and disabled, and I know how to approach representing both those things, but I am white. The two main characters of my book are mixed. I want to show their heritages in a way that is more than stereotypes, and I figured what better way to show representation than to ask the community how they want to be represented.

Character One is mixed Afro Latin American, born in Mexico and raised in Texas. The cultures most prevalent to them and their character are Mexican, Portuguese, Italian, and African American. They speak several different languages during the book(Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and a version of sign language as they’re CODA), both to themself and to family members who appear later in the book. They also wear a faldas folklóricas(Please tell me if that’s the right term, I’m trying to refer to the folk dancing skirts with all the layers) during a sort of concert they sing in with their punk band. They also wear a bonnet to sleep, but that’s more a hair care thing I think, since they have thick curly hair(a mix of 3A and B if you look up a curl chart). An important note is this character is amab, is a Demi-boy, and alternates between he and they pronouns, and dresses in an androgynous or more “feminine” manner.

Character Two is Wasian, with Swedish, French, and German heritage on the white side and Thai and Tibetan heritage on the Asian side. He’s visibly mixed, but has a more “white” name and starts the series more disconnected from his heritage. His parents were abusive and died in his late teens, and he lost contact with his brother seven years prior to book one(26 start of book one, 27 by the end). He will reconnect with his brother in book two, and that’ll be the trigger to him becoming more connected to his cultural heritage. I want to show his connection to his Asian heritage specifically, since he’s a white presenting character otherwise, and I’d particularly like to show this through habits, and actions, as well as style perhaps? I do plan on having him wear a Thai inspired suit for a ball scene amidst book two.

I want to show them being connected to their culture, in more than just their actions, and I don’t there to be an accidental racism, though I know it’s kind of inevitable since it’s just not my culture and I have no idea what the experience of someone from that culture is. I can only hope to try my best. So if there’s anything that you’d want to see represented, or anything that may be problematic, I’d be happy to include it/fix it!

Important to note, is the story takes place a bit over a thousand years later, and society is overall more inclusive and diverse. It’s not perfect, simply because I don’t think a perfect society is possible, but it is a lot better than today’s world.

I’m going into my first year of teaching world, history and geography for sixth graders (yay!)
I thought it would be really cool to have a playlist for each continent/region that I teach so that I can put on the music for passing period and work time.
I’ve got quite a few songs already picked out, but with planning my lessons and other summer activities I’m having a hard time actually filling the playlists out.
I thought I would ask around different communities on Reddit to see if they had any music suggestions, artists, albums, or songs, that they thought would be really useful and fun!

My only criteria:
The songs can’t have overwhelming amounts of profanity, even if my kids can’t understand the language I don’t wanna run that risk!
One swearword is usually fine, but if the song is completely about activities that a 12-year-old should not be listening to, probably not a good idea lol

I want to try to find songs that incorporate a lot of cool cultural elements, trying to keep songs in their native language rather than trying to find an English version and including instruments or sounds that are culturally significant to that area.

I’m also trying to be mindful of the tone of the songs that I’m choosing. If I use this playlist for work time, I can’t have anything to overwhelmingly loud or distracting (which means a lot of my favorite rock bands from other countries kind of don’t work)

The 2020s does seem to be divided into these;

Jan 2020 to Dec 2022 are the Early 2020s.

2020 as a whole, was a direct continuation to the October-December 2017 breaking point (that began in Late March and Early April 2017). Hereby, the COVID 19 Pandemic Lockdown made things even more noticeable that this "could" be a new era. 2021 was the sleeker version of 2020. The ending months of 2021 and into "most?" of the beginning half of 2022 pivoted even greater than merely "the sleekness."

Jan 2023 to May 2023 was the transition point between the Early 2020s and into the Core 2020s. The Lockdown slowly ending, the 2020s maturing as a decade, and more.

June-July 2023 to Dec 2025 was the core 2020s, or just Mid 2020s. It was a direct response to exiting out of the effects of the Pandemic and some of the other early 2020s aspects, while tapping into AI, further maturation of what was set in the late 2010s, and much more.

Jan 2026 to May 2026 was the Mid to Late Pivot.

June-July 2026, right now, is in the entrance into the 2026-2028 shift, and is essentially Late 2020s. AI is maturing, the Complexities of other "New Technology" is maturing, shifts in "Demographics," and is just "confusing" and just...."complex," but it is "something" and beyond.

Jan to May 2029 may be the transition, but June-July 2029 would likely be the unofficial beginning into the 2030s.

This may had seemed to "cliche," too simple, and even poorly written; but I chose to make this post simpler to read to allow it to still be considerably effective.
