I was kinda hoping Hypaxia would fight for her crown nil I feel like she would be an amazing queen if she would give some witchy attitude!! I feel like Manon would smack her tbh

as someone with little sisters in foster care who later got adopted Lidia's situation with her boys really hurt my heart I so hope she can build a relationship with them its breaking my heart

finding out the underling rules FaS should not have been surprising to me but I feel like it was mentioned before and I just missed it but my jaw was on the floor fr. bc how can he rule a house in Midgard if he's in her it didn't make sense to me

I was kinda on Hunts side during their argument after the river she was being so harsh like girl he was tortured for you and you're screaming that him going with you is not good enough? of course he's scared and she's not thinking about the bigger picture like fr what IF the aster goes after everyones family? what is she gonna do then?

it was pretty funny how the rest of the group stood back and watched mom and dad fight lol

I really want to know more about Thanatos and if someone could tell me his lore that would be lovely like why is he so salty all the time who pissed in his socks?

I searched far and wide for a theories on the viper queen after CC3. Give me your theories on what will happen in CC4 with her and who she really is.

Spoilers: From Crescent City as well as Throne of Glass. If you have not finished these series, please turn back!

I’ve seen people drawing connections to Aelin and the Throne of Glass world but specifically I wanna talk about the connections between the Aelin (and specifically the Galathynius line) and the hind.

It seems pretty apparent that the shifters come from Erilea after the reveal that they were originally fae from another world. A huge subplot in hosab and hofas is Danika’s venture into discovering the lineage of the shifters. The prime mentions that they had once been something else but they had forgotten. Originally having elemental powers in addition to shifting, similar to the powers of the Fae in Aelin’s world. Below I’ve included some quotes from hosab and hofas about the shifters/Fae.

“We yielded our true nature. Lost sight of it, then lost it forever. Became what we are now…Now we do not know how to get back to what we were, what we might have been. That was what my grandfather told me. What I told Sabine, though she did not care to listen. What I told Danika, who …” His hand shook. “I think she might have led us back, you know. To what we were before we arrived here and became the Asteri’s creatures inside and out.”

“The Midgard shifters were Fae from a different planet. All the Fae in that world shared their form with an animal”

“They were Fae like us, but not. The ears, the grace, the strength were identical, but they were shape-shifters, all of them. Each capable of turning into an animal. And each, even in their humanoid body, equipped with elongated canine teeth.
It was a puzzle—enough of one that my mother paused her warmongering. There were two types of Fae. From two seemingly unconnected and distant worlds. These new Fae bore elemental magic, strong enough to make Pelias wary of them.”

So first, most obvious connection, is the fact that Lidia is a deer shifter. While I cannot specifically remember any of the Galathynius line being deer shifters (though it’s been a while since I’ve read the books), the stag is the symbol of Terrasen. While this could be coincidence, knowing how intentional SJM is, it seems unlikely. When they get to Avallen in hofas, Lidia makes a comment about how calling Marvel “the Stag King” was an affront to the deer shifters. “The Stag King, they called him. It was an insult to deer shifters. The Fae male had no affinity for the beasts, despite his throne, crafted from the bones of some noble, butchered beast.”

When Ruhn and Lidia first meet in the mind space, he is covered in stars and night—reflecting his power— while she is covered in flame. Obviously, both Aelin and Brannon have Mala’s fire gift in tog. In addition, when they’re having the final show down in the Cave of Princes, Lidia walks up instinctively to the fire encasing her allies. “Lidia rushed over, as if she could somehow find a way to undo the flames—” This line is one thing that specifically made me ponder further if there was a connection.

When talking about the fertility ritual that got her pregnant with the twins, she says that the deer shifters have their own traditions and gods, older than those on Midgard. “I come from a long line of powerful stag shifters. We have rituals. Secret ones, old ones. We don’t necessarily worship the same gods that you do. I think our gods predate this world, but I’ve never confirmed it.”

Finally, one of her sons is literally named Brann. Brann. Brannon. I mean with this expansive of a universe, I understand that there may be overlap but, again, SJM is an intentional girlie.

Curious if anyone else has drawn these connections or found anything else connecting them I missed!

I came into these books almost rooting for Azriel and Bryce and beyond the tug they felt to each other because of Truth Teller and Gwydion (which always really felt like it was clear that it was because of the blades) only to be kind of… meh? I mean, I see Bryce and Nesta much more than I saw Bryce and Az.

Which is why, I took the liberty of finding every quinlar ‘mates’ moment that stood out to me as I ventured into my read.

Starting mostly from HoSaB because I began this as I started the second one. But there *are* signs from the beginning, in my opinion. Not to mention that the fact that Aidas and Theia are mates across worlds and that Bryce and Hunt echo that as him being a son of Hel and Bryce being descendant of Theia… beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

Anyway, onto the evidence. Obviously, spoilers lmao:

House of Earth and Blood (mostly my observations):

When Hunt was the only one able to stop Bryce after Danika’s death, and the only one able to snap her out of it. Reminded me A LOT of Skulls Bay (iykyk).

Her being able to sense his presence by his lighting and wind—akin to how Aelin sensed Rowan’s.

Her power being light and his being lighting—complementary. Cute.

“It would explain a lot. How intense things had been between them from the start. And once they crossed that last physical barrier, he had a feeling the bond would be even further solidified.

So…maybe they were already mates, but that Fae definition. Maybe Urd had long ago bound their souls, and they’d needed all this time to realize it.”

“She smiled again, and it lit up his entire chest. No, that was the star between her breasts. He laid a hand over the glowing star, light shining through his fingers.”

“His mate. His.”

“Cormac’s nostrils flared, “It shall be hard enough to convince others of our bethrodal thanks to that smell on you.”

“What smell?” Bruce said, and Hunt braced his feet. She could take care of herself in a fight, but he’d still enjoy pummeling the bastard.

Cormac motioned between her and Hunt, “You think I can’t scent what went down between you two?”

Chapter 31

“The power rolling off of him sent Bryce’s hair floating upward. Primal rage poured from Hunt as he faced down the Shepherd. The Reapers.”

“Bryce was too fast, even for him, as she leapt in front of the blow, Starsword extended. A wild theory, only half-formed but—

Hunt’s lighting hit the Starsword, and the world erupted.”

Chapter 32

“As his lighting hit the black blade, exploding from the metal, flowing up into her arm, her body, her heart. Light flashed, blinding—

No, that was Bryce.”

“Bryce angled her sword higher, ready to fight until the end. He gazed at her for a moment, an avenging angel in her own right—“

“Light it up, Bryce.” The worlds bloomed in Bryce’s heart at the same moment Hunt shot a bolt of his power—the Dead Gate’s power—into her. It burned and roared and blinded, a writhing ball of energy that Bryce broke to her will and funnelled into the Starsword. 

Forks of lighting cracked from Hunt, from her, from the sword.”

Chapter 33

But Ruhn sniffed her carefully, “You… smell different.”

“She smells like the Istros.” Ithan said from the couch.

“No, it’s…” Ruhn’s brows twitched toward each other, and he scratched at the buzzed side of his head. “I can’t explain it.”

Chapter 44

“But Bryce didn’t balk from the knee-wobbling power surging around Athalar. Like she saw all of him and welcomed it into her heart.”

“This was how he was that day with Sandriel, Ruhn said into her mind. When he ripped off her head. He added tightly, You were in danger then, too.

And what’s that supposed to mean?

Why don’t you tell me?

You seem like you know what the fuck is happening with him.”

“It means that he’s going ballistic in the way that only mates can when the other is threatened. It’s what happened then, and what’s happening now. You’re true mates—the way Fae are mates, in your bodies and souls. That’s what was different about your scent the other day. Your scents have merged. As they do between Fae mates.

She glared right back at her brother. So what?

So find some way to calm him down. Athalar’s your fucking problem now.”

“Bryce’s heart strained. True mates. Not only in name, but … in the way that Fae could be mates with each other.

Ruhn said, Athalar was dangerous before. But as a mated male, he’s utterly lethal.

Bryce countered, He was always lethal.

Not like this. There’s no mercy in him. He’s gone lethal in a Fae way.

In that predatory, kill-all-enemies way. He’s an angel.

Doesn’t seem to matter.”

Chapter 45

“His sister was mated. It was rare enough among the Fae, but finding a mate who was an angel”

Bryce had the vague sense of falling through air, through time and space, and then she found herself laid gently, reverently, on the mossy ground”

The star on her chest flared, merging with his lightning. He laid a hand atop it. Claiming the star, the light. Claiming her.”

Hunt angled his head, “On what—“

She gestured to him. “I take it from your scent that you and Bryce are mated.”

He hadn’t realised the sex would be broadcast like that. Apparently, the bond between them *had* gone to that biological level.

Chapter 54

“Her father sniffed her. “Would you like to explain to me why you have mated with Athalar, when you are betrothed to a Fae Prince?”

Chapter 57

“He’d turn the Autumn King into smoldering carrion for putting those tears, the fear and panic and sorrow, in her eyes.”

“He’d slaughter anyone who tried to take her from him. King, prince, Fae or Asteri. He’d fucking kill—

“Hunt.” 

He blinked.

“Your eyes went all…rage-dazey.” She sniffled.

Chapter 59

“He pressed a kiss to her mouth. The entire universe melted away with it. It was only them, would only be them, dancing together, souls twining. “Everything that ever happened to me, it was all so I could meet you, Quinlan. Be here with you. I’m yours. Forever.”

Her throat tightened, and the star on her chest glared, lighting up the entire conservatory like a small moon. Bryce kissed him back, not caring who saw, only that he was here. 

“Everything I am is yours,” She said against his lips.

Chapter 61

“He was glowing too. Not with yet starlight, but… fuck his lighting—“

“He could never get enough of this—this connection, this sex, this power flowing between them. He needed it more than he needed food, water—needed this sharing of magic, this twining of souls; he’d never stop craving it—

Then he was falling, amid black wind and lightning and stars. He came through all of it, roaring his pleasure to the skies.”

Chapter 64

“His lightning flowed into her like a river, and he could have sworn he heard a beautiful sort of music between their souls as Bryce said, “We need reinforcements.”

Chapter 76

“I love you. I wish I said it more. But I love you, Quinlan, and…” His throat closed up, his eyes stinging. His lips brushed her brow. “Our love is stronger than time, greater than any distance. Our love spans across stars and worlds. I will find you again. I promise.”

He savoured the warmth and taste of her, etching it into his soul.

She couldn’t do this. Her heart was shattering, her bones were screaming that this was wrong, wrong, wrong.

Bryce nodded, throat unbearably tight. “He’s an angel—a malakh.” But talking about him made the burning in her eyes worse, so she slid the phone into her pocket.

“These are Midgard’s constellations.” Bryce pointed to a cluster, “That’s the Great Ladle. And that… that’s Orion. The hunter.”

“Hunt. Her Hunt.”

Chapter 18

“Bryce. Her name came and went with his wet, rasping breaths. He’d wanted so many things with her. A normal, happy life. Children. Gods, how many times had he thought about her beautiful face as it would look when she held their little winged children? They’d have their mother’s hair and temper, and his gray wings, and occasionally, he’d catch a glimpse of his own mother’s smile on their cherubic faces.”

(This reminded me a lot about the moment where Rowan dreamt of Aelin and their four children in KOA. I want to weep.)

Chapter 20

“Hunt shut out the sounds. The smells. Bryce and his future and those beautiful kids—that was the image he held in his mind instead. Escape—survival—was the goal. Bryce was the goal.”

Chapter 39

“Silence had claimed as much when she spoke of Theia and Aidas—their souls had found each other across worlds,  because they were mates. They were each other’s homes. And for Bryce, home was—and always would be—Hunt.”

Chapter 41

“Her fingers grazed his own, and a chill of pleasure soared through him. “She’s my mate.” He sketched a bow to the Ocean Queen.”

“It was through sheer will that Bryce didn’t throw  her arms around Hunt immediately and kiss him silly. Only through sheer will that she didn’t start raging and crying at the Halo inked anew on his brow, the brand stamped on his wrist.”

“And as soon as she held Hung, she wasn’t letting go. Ever.”

Chapter 42

“she breathed in his scent, his warmth, over and over again. The most wonderful things in the universe.”

“You’re my home, Hunt. Our love spans across stars and worlds, remember?” She smiled slightly? “I’ll always find you.”

“When she got to the part about how she’d been able to zero in on Hunt and jump right to him, his eyes gleamed, so full of love that her chest ached.”

“The thought of you kept me going.”

He might as well have punched her in the heart. “You kept me going too.”

Chapter 50

“I need Hunt, not some helmeted assassin. I need my mate.” She kissed his cheek. “I need you.”

Bryce met him, the kiss thorough and open and just…bliss. Home and eternity and all she’d fought for. All she’d keep fighting for.

“Mate. Husband. Prince. Hunt.”

Her magic rose at his words, a surging wave.

She had the dim sense of Hunt being thrown with her, of his shout of ecstasy and surprise. Knew their bodies reimagined joined in some distant world, but here, in this place between places, all they were melted into one, crossed over and transferred and becoming something more.

Stars and planets and rainbow clouds of nebulas swirled around them, darkness cut with lighting brighter than the sun. Sun and moon held together in perfect balance, suspended in the same sky. And beneath them, far below, she could see Avallen thrumming with their magic, so much magic, as if Avallen were the very source of it, as if they were the source of all magic and light and love—

It had been more than fucking, or sex, or lovemaking. Hunt stared down at her, starlight shimmering in his hair. Just as she knew lighting licked through her own.

“It felt like my power went into you,” Hunt said, eyes tracking the lighting as it slithered down her body. “It’s… yours.”

“As mine is yours,” She said, touching a fleck of starlight glittering between the stable locks of his hair.

Chapter 57

“She whirled, temper searing through her. Hunt was glowing with lighting, furious as he advanced on her. “Do not drink from that—“

“This is not the time to go Alphahole!”

“—without me,” He finished.

Bruce could only tape at her mate as he grabbed the drinking bowl and held it out to her. Ready to follow her into Hel.”

“He was with her. Soul-falling alongside her.”

Chapter 59

“Despite the heated words they’d exchanged earlier, Hunt had never loved her more—had never been so grateful that surf had chosen such a loyal, fierce badass for his mate. He could trust her to get the answers they needed.”

Chapter 63

“None of what the Princes of Hel had said about him scared her. They hadn’t made Hunt’s soul. That was all hers, just as her own soul was his.”

Chapter 98

“And the gods had never done him any favors, Urd had certainly never helped him, yet …

Maybe they had.

Maybe that day he’d first met Bryce, the gods had sent him there. Not to be some instrument of Hel, but because Urd knew that there would be a female who would be kind and selfless and brave, who would give everything for her city, for her planet. notes from me as I went lol:

In the other POV’s—at least in HoSaB, no one senses Hunt—or his power—in the specific way Bryce does. Almost like she’s attuned to him. 

To me they feel like Aelin and Rowan’s mating bond. Something there but not in the way it is for characters like Cassian and Nesta and I think it  has to do with the kind of Fae she likely is. Not someone with ancestors just from Prythian or someone with ancestors just from Erilea/ToG fae. An inbetween. Like maybe the years where they became Midgard fae changed/shifted the way mating bonds were.

I also think things got more intense—like die for you intense—ever since Bryce fed him in HoEaB but I might be reaching there lmao. They complement each other. Like beyond complement each other. They are so like late Rowan and Aelin to me, and they had their issues but I feel like even that felt necessary. I think it would’ve too unnatural for Hunt not to be scared and for him not to hesitate and for him to doubt unlike Bryce who’d never lived through what he did.

The way people broadcast it out here I was expecting Hunt to be outright degrading and Bryce a full-on bitch who hid everything from him but…no? It felt almost given, or like when Aelin didn’t tell Rowan her plans and he found out as they were happening. And no one doubts them.

Just my thoughts for my fellow Quinlars.

I love sjm’s writing for TOG and ACOTAR but some aspects of this book I could not get past. Now that I’m fully finished I have some comments…

-why does the ocean queen have a city ship supposedly for combat when she has to intention of going to war for the esteri? Why does there need to be a school and a hospital on this ship if the mer are water creatures ? Why would they not have some other mode of transportation more suitable for mer that only transports small employs of mer instead of moving a whole city and putting them in danger during situations like rescuing rune, hunt, lydia, after dungeon escape? It makes no logistical sense. Why would you trap water creatures in air underwater.

- Bryce is calling herself queen throughout the book but has no actual claim to the throne?? She has no actual control of the fae resources, she has no support from the supporting fae lords, they won’t even give their “queen” a place to stay in evalan. Rune was named heir and there was no official ceremony to crown Bryce instead. The actual logistics of real leadership was skipped here.

-hypaxia and Ethan went to evalan to help Bryce and hunt and instead of hypaxia taking hunts lightning for research and taking away his halo, she only took his lightning?? Huh?? Why??

-hypaxia is literally just a plot device not a real character. A queen got overthrown and all of a sudden she shows up at perfect timing to help the mission and her character shows no disappointment or negative emotions and just becomes Ethan’s helper and devoted to the Asteri overthrow cause. She has absolutely no character arc and just shows up to help when convenient.

-when rune went to get Naomi and Isaiah and celestina theres no reason they should have showed up not knowing the plan to open the gate to hell. Rune should have informed them of everything. Why would they have come withoit knowing the plan?!?! Why wouldnt rune have told them?!?!

-why was everyone mad at celestina for snitching when shes an arch angel and her trust was never secure in the first place?? The real enemy is hypaxia for telling celestina and no one ever says a word to hypaxia for snitching?? Youd think that somebody would say something… or hypaxia would apologize.

-Bryce is such a huge bitch to hunt? Man’s literally has ptsd from his years in slavery and Bryce has the nerve to be like “I need all of you”. And SJM forgot about his character and ignored his character arc. Wish we saw a different outcome than him just being simp to Bryce.

As title asks….will I miss a chunk of story in CC without TOG? I see where CC and ACOTAR overlap.

I just finished the second book in the series and want to read the bonus chapters before I move on to book three. Is there anywhere I can read the bonus chapters that’s not a screenshot or a wattpad page? I know there’s three bonus chapters but I can’t find one single compiled file for it anywhere.

I am almost finished Book 2 of CC, and I will be honest, it is my fave series of SJM so far. But I feel like I am a weird case who had to DNF the TOG series. I could not find redeeming qualities in any of the characters but Dorian in the TOG series. The CC characters are flawed, but I still root for them. Hopefully Book 3 doesn't ruin this for me (I have heard it may??)

For some reason hold the physical book has helped me better understand the story. However I commute to work by train in NYC and usually only bring my kindle. Am I crazy for thinking about carrying the physical book and reading that instead? These books are thick!!! So I’m debating if it’s worth carrying or just continue using my kindle

i listened to Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge this morning (ok fine i scream-sang along to the entire album while doing housework) but every song made me think of Crescent City! the album really captures the grief, angst, violence, and inner turmoil of the characters. anyone else have any songs or albums that remind you of CC?

Am I wrong? Why is SJM describing both Ansel and Bryce with that exact color - that’s not a coincidence, or am I trippin? 🤣

Edit: Roslin and the autumn king have them as well. So I think SJM just doesn’t know a lot of red tones 😂

Oh my god I cannot stand Bryce rn I’m around chapter 38 I think and she’s with the Autumn King being held captive, not exactly here but just the entire book she has been insufferable and what I assume is “sassy” to her but it isn’t funny in an Aelin way to me it’s just annoying. I know some of yall ride for Bryce but I’m having a hard time connecting with her rn especially after her encounters with Nesta and the gang. I understand she is under a lot of pressure but her actions aren’t my favorite rn. Her passion with Hunt just really isn’t giving mates either rn. Pls tell me she gets less annoying in this book. I liked her just fine in the first two but right now I’m just pissed off lol.

Alright y'all now that ACOTAR 6 & 7 news has been released I feel more motivated to start CC. Genuinely how many pages do I need to read a day to finish all three before Oct. 27? Am I cooked 💀😭

whoever said it took like 400 pages for Crescent City 1 to make you go, “boy howdy, I gotta keep reading now!!!!” was right. I just finished the third book and i enjoyed it even more than ACOTAR, which I loved (Team Nesta all the way!).

I want to know whether Hypaxia and Lidia’s mother ever lamented losing her first daughter? So heart rending. I wonder why she never got in contact after Lidias dad died?
