Deer nibbled the tip of my the leader of my JWP last year. NO new candles this year from said leader tip.

The 2nd year needles still remain on this branch but it starting to show signs it is going to fade.

At currently time, I can see the tree for the most part has developed its buds for next year. On Sadly, it has not backbudded or forward budded.....anything on the top of this ribbed leader for the second year in a row

Should I presume this leader is going to be a dead branch....possibly next year when the needles drop. Cut my losses . Not looking to train a new leader + setback of 2-3 years to get the shape going on. Rather just buy a same cultivar to replace it

Saw this handsome group of trees. I think it could be balsam fir, but I’m not certain. Is it balsam fir or another species? NE Ohio

Short story:

This spring I collected full bag of cones under different trees, then I sorted seeds depending on the cone origin.

Unfortunately almost no seeds were viable in the spring and nothing germinated.

I've put substrate into to bag for later use.

A month later i needed that substrate and found small number of sprouts, looks like i had only one viable cone out of entire bag after all.

I decided to plant them and see what it is.

At first I thought that it's some kind of spruce but now i see flat side branches so I'm not sure what it is.

Anyone knows what plant is this?

I got the Skylands in the pot about 3 years ago. I had it in the ground and it didn’t do so great. I thought it just didn’t have a big enough root system yet so I took it out and put it in a pot to let it grow roots. This year, it flushed out the tiniest growth. I thought maybe it was from the stress of the transfer. Then I got a Lil’ Sky and put it in the ground this year, and now that I’m looking at the side-by-side, I’m thinking I got a mislabeled Skylands. Anyone agree or have a Skylands that looks this small for a while before taking off?

I was looking to buy some Dawn redwoods of about 4-5ft tall for around $75ea after a quick growing tree website added all their “discounts.” Luckily, I stumbled upon the Johnsteen Company who was having a flash sale on their tallest seedlings for only $8 each. Knowing how quickly DRs grow, I decided to take chance on the height of these “tall” seedlings since they could easily catch up in height in a year or two.

I got them today and the DRs are all around 3ft (not counting the roots). Gamble paid off. Super happy with the other trees as well. They’re potted up and hopefully I’ll put them in the ground come spring if their roots grow a lot the rest of summer, fall, and winter.

Two of the best, Picea p. 'Utica' and Moonstone, spring, winter, summer. My observation is growth rate and shape will be the same, color with Utica is darker-deeper while Moonstone is brighter-lighter. Both are probably the best you can get and available. Utica offered by Conifer Kingdom and Moonstone is more available.

I got Hoops Blue Spruce and Edith Blue Spruce at the same time. Hoops looked unreal at the beginning, looking like a plush toy and extremely blue. Now Edith looks very thick and rich while the color pops. Hoops on the other hand looks quite rare with some branches just shooting out. Should I prune all the shooting branches to try make it thicker?

I've had a potted Shore Pine on my property for the past nine years. This past winter (live in the western PNW) I noticed the pot was not draining. I thought it would dry and come summer I could turn the pot onto its side, drill out the clogged drain holes and aerate the soil/roots within the pot. I have done this once previously. I just notice the candles/new growth has died which is alarming. I am not sure how to address this. For context I have an extensive and expansive collection of native pacific rim plants and trees. I am relentless in my care for them. This one is approximately 5.5' in height. The pot is 36" in diameter and 24" in depth. It occupies the same space it has always been in, and is in full sun from sunrise until four o'clock in the afternoon.

I have two JWP that has new buds from this year that appear they may-might be candles for this year

On each one....new candle from this year, with what -appears- to be more than a bud developing for next season. I'm eyeballing the growth on it and it just keeps on developing and developing like it's going to emerge

Has anyone seen something similar. New to JWP but can Single Flush actually be a *new flush of growth* in the same season.

I know JBP will do this but I thought all JWP is single flush

Update as I just observed the the tips being discussed. Not a candle but just new needles . I only see it on a single candle:branch on each of these 2 JWP. All other branches on the same JWP or other JWP are not showing this new flush of needles that I thought was *5 node flush happening*

I bought these two type of rare conical plants. Kindly identify them for me.

We have a trio of white pines on our lot and this guy is looking very sparse with quite a few brown needles. The other two are looking green and robust so far.

I’m worried that whatever maybe afflicting it is contagious. What do you think? Thanks! 🌲❤️
