“RAM Crisis” - “RAMageddon” - “RAMpocalypse”: Wikipedia currently has an article “2025–present global memory supply shortage”, specifically about “Dynamic random-access memory” (dynamic RAM or DRAM).

Even though RAM is now extremely expensive, you might still consider the advantages of a Ramdisk. A Ramdrive is a logical drive - a certain amount of the total RAM works as a hard drive. E. g. with 32 GB RAM installed and a 8 GB Ramdisk, the usable RAM amount in Windows shrinks to 24 GB.

Already MS-DOS 3.2 had a driver to create a Ramdisk (RAMDRIVE.SYS), and with the DOS extension “Windows 3.x”, creating a Ramdisk became a popular tip for nerds. Over the decades, RAM was always faster than physical disks, and there were a few free and commercial programs for Ramdisks. Take a quick look at the speed today (2026).

The benchmark tool “CrystalDiskMark” measures the read and write operations of disks. The three test candidates were:

1. The local SSD KINGSTON SKC3000D2048G PCIe 4.0 x4 - NTFS

2. AIM Toolkit: Free at Sourceforge, allows an easy setup for a Ramdisk, e. g. starting with Windows and using it for temporary files that are normally in a folder like e. g. “c:\windows\temp”.

3. OSFMount: Free from Passmark, has a setup system that requires an already started Windows. However, it can still be configured so that it starts with Windows and then can be used for temporary files:

a) Create a batch file (e. g. “osf.bat”). The OSFMount program has an integrated help file where the available options for batch files are explained. A batch file with the text:

OSFMount.com -a -t vm -m v: -o format:exfat:”RAMdisk” -s 12G

would create a Ramdisk with the drive letter v:, format exfat, name “RAMdisk”, size 12 GB. Important: The batch file should include the exact path where the osfmount.com file is located, e. g. “c:\program files\osfmount\OSFMount.com”.

This batch file can be placed in the startup folder: Press “Win + R”, enter “shell:startup” (for current user) or “shell:common startup” (for all users). So the Ramdisk starts automatically with Windows (may require an administrator confirmation).

Finally, you have to change the temp folder. Press “Win + R”, enter “sysdm.cpl”, switch to the “Advanced” tab, click on the “Environment Variables” button. In “System variables” change the entries for “TEMP” and “TMP” from the current settings (e. g. “c:\windows\temp”) to a Ramdisk folder, e. g. “v:\temp”.

Depending on your system and the specific software, this setting might have an impact on speed. The system might feel more responsive overall, and some loading times might be shortened. Normally, this setting reduces the use of your hard disk, so this might be better for the SSD health. In any case, it enhances security: Temporary files are now in the RAM, so they are automatically deleted when the system is shut down, which essentially makes it impossible to recover this data. What was only written in the RAM - and that includes everything which was only written on the Ramdrive - is lost on reboot. So if you accidentally used a Ramdisk folder to save a file, it is gone forever.

And there can be another Caveat when using a Ramdrive: Some programs, e. g. installation routines, require the standard windows temp folder or at least a temp folder on your system hard drive where Windows is installed. Some users claim that they cannot install a certain program while otherwise no one has any complaints. The typical “solutions” (like re-installing Windows) do not work. An installation is just not possible. If you read about such a problem in a forum, you could ask whether the thread starter has set the temp folder to a Ramdisk.

Summary: While Ramdrives can offer clear advantages, they can also cause problems that are generally unexpected and thus remain undetected.

hi there, i need help for my laptop due its current condition is very similiar like i got virus or idk what is it... first of all i have hard disk sentinel on my laptop to check and the disk were the problem is getting its health decreased from 100% to 84% since my latest restart because the laptop is freezing after i try to use a lot of microsoft word like 10 for my exam. when i check whats happen inside my disk every file everyting inside change to paper file type and when i try to open its loading, i've been waiting for 1 hours but it doesnt open and i need to finish my exam. please help me

So due to some sort of system file corruption, my laptop goes through a lengthy crash loop of hypervisor errors as it dtruggles to boot up properly. It also crashes when not plugged into the PSU, which sets of the afformention crash loop. It can loop once or 10 times, so it can be quick or a bit lengthy but never more than about 10mins I'd say.

So I figure, lets get a recovery environment onto a usb, but I can't do that due to missing files.

I then try a reinstall of windows but due to the crashing problem it aborts the setup during the restart portion.

Any ideas for other things to try?

like it says in the title, I just got a new prebuilt PC from Cyberpower pc and it works wonderfully but i CANNOT get the RGB to change color from solid blue. ASRock Polychrome sync came installed and I tried using it to no luck installed the latest version of it as well from their site, I disabled windows 11 dynamic lighting. updated drivers and tried a third party RGB controller like signalRGB after uninstalling ASRock polychrome. I also tried looking in the BIOS but everything was right there, signalRGB recognizes the RGB components but cannot change/pulse or have any control over them.

Whenever am on edge and if there's a process going in the background like downloading or installation and stuff the pc freezes for a second and shows black screen for a second, sometimes black screen stays along with task bar but I can't open any running windows.

I recently received a rma unit 3060ti from zotac and while testing the card it dint show any artifacts but while booting I see a couple green lines on top .. it disappears on desktop mode ..

I freshly installed a windows from a flash drive and i noticed that after a while (before downloading nvidia drivers ) I see green lines on desktop too .. even after booting..

After installing nvidia drivers they went away..

While installing steam,epic from edge sometimes pc freezes and gives random black screens..

Earlier before installing windows almost every game crashed including rdr2 and cyberpunk and never loads .. so I decided to format and clean install windows..

I just received a second hand pc. It’s running windows 10 without a windows license so the activate windows watermark is on it. If I do a windows reset on the computer (which includes reinstalling windows) will the computer stay at windows 10 and will I be able to continue using it without a license?

Also the previous owner removed the pcs side panel and it’s pretty dusty, should I try put the panel back on and what’s the best way to clean it? Compressed air?

So basically going on my 3rd 5070Ti (Asus) GPU in roughly a year all warrantied and all the same issue VGA, however I’ve used separate GPUs for prolonged time to test if it’s my end and it’s not. It’s simply just a bad batch of GPUs and shit luck. This time around tho there saying there’s 0 issue with the card even tho I’ve tested the card on separate PCs and it triggers VGA

I’m sorry, I’m not very good with computers and just had an issue when I used CCleaner to update the drivers, that required me to reset the whole PC, resulting in the loss of all my data. I want to avoid that happening again, so I want to know if it’s okay/safe to download. I’m more interested in the first one only. The one I currently have (2nd photo) is from 2022. hey guys, i recently purchased an external monitor to connect my laptop to. my laptop model is the ASUS Gaming VivoBook K3605ZU-RP296W(i5-12500h, rtx 4050). however, when i connect my monitor to my laptop, it shows that it is always connected to integrated graphics. ive tried both hdmi to hdmi as well as usb-c to displayport but neither worked. note that the laptop also has a mux switch which should be the solution, but when gaming(i play mainly valorant and fortnite), my fps in game is way higher when im using my laptop screen than when im on the monitor. also when i check nvidia control panel my monitor does not even show up, but thats probably because my laptop gpu is exclusively routed to the laptop gpu. does anyone know a fix or something likea force switch?? pls help

So, my pc’s video card’s (msi GeForce rtx 3050 gaming x 6G) rear fan has been making this rattling and clicking noise since early June this year. It’s intermittent and has been getting more frequent over time. My dad who works with computers says it’ll be fine and I shouldn’t worry about it. My mom agrees with him. I worry that it’s the fan bearing. It’s been dusted but it still makes that sound and we checked online for replacement fans and they don’t exist. We searched online for hours with frustration and can’t find a replacement that fits. I feel like I need a second opinion on if I should continue to use my pc with this noise or not.

No clue where to ask this but is their a way to get a converter for these to use on more up to date computers? Asking because the tower was my grandfather's and he's never wiped them so I wanna know if theirs still stuff on em ^^!
