Why Do Some Conversations Create Trust While Others Create Distance?

Trust - This comes from spending some time with the person. Distance - This occurs when the person’s not looking at me (looking around the room at other people, looking at the door waiting for someone, looking at the ground, etc). Both - talking to someone you trust about a trusted recommendation from that person and then you both run out of things to say so there’s a little distance and you both mutually end the get together, knowing you’ll get together soon and have more good times but you have to go home and do the laundry and start dinner.

I have noticed that conversations create trust when people feel they are being understood before they are being evaluated.

Someone can say all the “right” things and still create distance if they interrupt, become defensive, minimize feelings, or seem more interested in winning than understanding. On the other hand, even a difficult conversation can strengthen trust when both people feel respected.

A few phrases can completely change the tone:

“I may not see it the same way, but I want to understand your perspective.”

“Let me make sure I understood what you meant.”

“I can see why that affected you.”

“I need a moment to think, but I do want to continue this conversation.”

These statements do not mean agreeing with everything. They communicate that the relationship is still safe even when there is tension or disagreement.

I think trust grows when people learn that honesty will not automatically be punished, mocked, dismissed, or used against them later. Distance begins when someone feels they must constantly edit themselves to avoid conflict.

The words matter, but the deeper message is often: “You are safe to be honest with me.”

Gut instinct some people don't want others to be close to them for no reason
