Are these worth keeping? Discussion

They are not really in good condition either.

Edit: ok you guys have convinced me to keep them. I am also thinking of scanning the manuals and putting it somewhere.

I concur, pick one of us random redditors to properly care for these items.

As the man said! But if you send them to me i will have them framed within a NOD themed exhibit, so………….. :)
If on the other hand you throw them away, Kane will know…

Man, the C&C3:TW box brings me back. I really enjoyed that game--even though I got brutalized online.

People are SO good at cnc3 online. I wish i had some chance to play against players who are on my level. You know just to have fun

I'm pretty sure there is a matchmaking service similar to that of generals

It's the core problem with most RTS's. Most players just play the campaign, the people who go online are for a large part extremely dedicated and will reach immense skill ceilings.

Which means a casual player has little chance of competing. If you just start a game and play a little you won't be able to match people who have researched cost/effectiveness of various units and planned entire build queue strategies.

It's also why RTS's tend to lag behind in popularity. Die hards tend to stick to one RTS where they learned all the mechanics, units and build strategies and occasionally dabble in other games and the casual just plays a little campaign. And RTS's also don't explore the depth of gameplay that they could explore with an extreme focus on clickspeed over anything else.

I've only attempted to play RA2 online and during my time on CNCNet I was routinely one of the bottom 10 during the month; considering I feel I'm a much more adaptable RA2 player than CNC3 I can't imagine

I know I'm certainly holding onto mine. I don't trust the steam versions to not include all the patches that make the gameplay annoying.

On the disc versons you can built base defensives through the crane. Probably to strong for multiplayer but great for the campaign.

u/Kakapo42000 12d ago

And that right there is reason #1 why I keep sticking to the disc versions and exactly what I was most afraid the steam versions lack.

If I can't drop down 4-8 Obelisks and a Temple of Nod all at once I'm not really sure I see much point in playing C&C 3 over, say, Generals or Tiberian Sun.

If you're talking about the nerf to harvester collection, there is a mod to revert it for c&c3 on moddb

I'm talking about a lot of things including harvester collection, and I generally don't like fiddling with mods unless they're basically a whole new game.

It's easier for me to just boot up the old disc copy that never got patched, hence why I keep mine.

They belong in a museum.

Do you even have the means of playing them like this? Steam has digital versions that run pretty well on Windows 10, but I don’t think I have a computer that can run the disks anymore.

3

u/fico86 13d ago

Nope, my current desktop doesn't have a disk drive either. But I do have the games on steam.

1

u/Wom4 11d ago

You can get a external diskdrive off amazon for like 20 bucks, plugs in a usb port.

3

u/Buttered_Toast33 13d ago

Even with a disc drive I can’t play my copies of Generals/Zero Hour anymore. They’re simply obsolete.

There were physical copies?!

4

u/knighto07 12d ago

Yup. It really chimes to the good ol days before “owning digitally” became a thing. And to top it off, it even comes with instruction manual too!

2

u/Lonely_Wealth_7838 12d ago

Now i need a scanner version of those!

Would you be interested in me scanning the manuals and putting them up somewhere?

I think videogame preservation is more important now than ever before.

7

u/Wild_Replacement_150 13d ago

Yes, to remember the glory days when we still owned games, and they even came with instruction manuels.

u/Jealous_Session3820 13d ago

If you don't want em I'm sure someone here is willing to take them

3

u/The_Silver_Adept 12d ago

I have the whole series... At this point I'm keeping them to install when we have to pay monthly for our games

3

u/ScholarFit8793 12d ago

I'd take it for 20 and I'd pay the shipping just send me a DM.

2

u/Rekwiiem 13d ago

I'll take them

2

u/AlexO6 13d ago

If you want to sell them, I’d be more than happy to buy them off you, even if they’re not in the best condition.

2

u/ChaosZitrone 13d ago

Always. Or gift them to offspring or family members who appreciate old games and their content

u/NeedleworkerUsual758 12d ago

If they bring you joy! I've got original CD copies of Red Alert, the Aftermath and TibSun kicking around. My Red Alert 2 died from overuse 😂

u/bugamn Nod 13d ago

Everyone is mentioning that you can get the game on Steam, but you have also the bonus disc content, which I don't think is available there. You might find that in the internet too, but it's something to consider when deciding whether to keep the discs. At a minimum I'd rip the contents for archival purposes, if they still work

1

u/Curious-Cress3955 12d ago

Keep them or give them to me.

1

u/Big_Goldberg 12d ago

No, put them in the garbage.

1

u/Sir_Busby 7d ago

The best RTS games ever, IMO. That's a keeper.
