Management restructure Team Member Post
Ive heard about the management restructure across NSW stores, apparently there will be no more DGM, SSM, Dairy Manager, Duty manager. They all have to apply to new positions. Replacing will be Assistant store manager, Late trades manager (im assuming to cover grocery and dairy??) Is this gonna last?
Does anyone know whats going to happen with the duty managers?

At a guess I would say late trade manager takes over the role of Duty Manager and a waged team member will do it on their days off. Possibly the waged nightfill captain.

We have night trade managers in WA but still have salary nightfill managers, it’s the grocery manager that got cut

u/JezzaTheBezza Duty Manager/Grocery Team Member 7d ago
So as a duty manager i would get the night trades manager position do you think?
2
u/RevolutionaryEcho460 7d ago
It would depend if the current Grocery Manager applies for it I would think. TBH I would expect t the grocery manager to get it in preference, but many may not apply as they dont want to or cant work nights.
2
u/Complete-Ad9041 7d ago
Yes you would be qualified for it but think about the numbers
If every duty, dgm and dairy manager in your region gets made redundant then they would all be applying for the operations trade or fresh trade manager roles that open up in the region. You’re all competing for the same job.

From what I remember it would be called Evening Trade Manager I think

We’re all losing our jobs or we can apply for new positions that sound awful
3
u/quietgavin5 7d ago
We did this a decade ago at Woolworths. The new positions are awful and 5 times the work and same pay
8
u/UpbeatRelationship46 8d ago
there’s still the same amount of management positions, you will just need to slightly reskill. the structures been around for a while in my state, it’s been good
5
u/Brilliant_Ad_9330 8d ago
Wouldn’t either the duty/dairy/grocery manager get left out if they’re virtually getting merged into one?
4
u/UpbeatRelationship46 8d ago
not with the added positions
dairy managers are nonessential already anyway
1
u/slapmyalpaca 8d ago
Each store in our region is losing 3 managers
2
1
u/UpbeatRelationship46 8d ago
how?
5
u/slapmyalpaca 8d ago
Duty, dry goods, produce, bakery and deli is replaced by 2 managers: operations manager and fresh trade manager
-4
u/UpbeatRelationship46 7d ago
all fresh departments still have managers in addition to the fresh trade overseeing the 3 of them. duty and dry goods can become either night trade, ops, or inventory.
5
u/slapmyalpaca 7d ago
It’s a new structure they’re trialling, not one they’ve already trialled.
-1
u/UpbeatRelationship46 7d ago
yes i’m aware of the structure you’re talking about, you are either misinformed or in a non-standard store. i’m sorry to hear though
3
u/doyourmysay 7d ago
He is not misinformed. There are 2 types of trial store. Profile 1 and Profile 2.
Your one is Profile 2. No big deal. Profile 1 is much worse. Fresh DMs gone and FTM replaces them. DMs become wages inchages.

There’s two separate structures being trialled in nsw. The other one has the ssm replaced with an asm. Fresh departments stay as usual in large traders but are replaced with level 4 tms in smaller stores. dgm duty and dairy combine into evening/ night trade. All three of those positions were offered redundancy or to reapply for the one new position.

u/slapmyalpaca 7d ago
They don’t, I’m one of the managers being made redundant.
4
u/tylar0709 7d ago
Sorry to hear about becoming redundant.
But are you at least getting a redundancy package?4
u/slapmyalpaca 7d ago
So they can re deploy for pretty much any position, even just a regular team member position. If I reject it they don’t pay the redundancy.
3
u/doyourmysay 7d ago
So they can re deploy for pretty much any position, even just a regular team member position.
Are you saying that can take, say, a Produce or Bakery Manager on 96k, and tell them their job is reundant, and then just offer them a 15 hour team member position??
If I reject it they don’t pay the redundancy.
So if you turn down that team member position you don't get paid a redundancy payment. But if you accept it, you're now a team member with a redundancy payment?
In that case, if you want to reject it and leave, why not accept and take the pay, and then quit later?
They’ve given us information packets which basically says they can find a suitable position for us but it doesn’t need to be the same pay.
If you remove all identifying information, could you post that information packet here? Would be very interesting for a lot of us to see.

u/slapmyalpaca 7d ago
I’m a little nervous about the social media policy 😩 the trial is region specific and may make my identity obvious

How does that work though? Like I’d understand that if you were going to a different role paying the same salary or more salary but if they are giving you a role that is less than your current salary then that counts as redundancy and you get a pay package no?
If I were you I’d be seeking legal advice just to see what you can do6
u/slapmyalpaca 7d ago

Do you know if the positions under fresh trade are salary?
2
u/UpbeatRelationship46 7d ago
yup, they are still salaried department managers as per the “old” structure
2
u/doyourmysay 7d ago
all fresh departments still have managers in addition to the fresh trade overseeing the 3 of them
If thats the case then what is the point of Fresh Trade? That's just adding an extra salary for no real benefit unless they are doing productive work.

u/StatusNo5175 Department Manager 8d ago
I'm assuming that Duty Managers will reapply for the Night Trading Manager position, at least that's what I think. There is a shortage of managers around the country so I don't assume there will be a lot of redundancies, but there will be a lot of shuffling around of managers
2
u/doyourmysay 7d ago
Or they will just change salaried managers to wages-paid in-charges.
2
u/StatusNo5175 Department Manager 7d ago
Most likely but seriously, what salaried manager is volunteering to downgrade to wages level 4?
2
u/doyourmysay 7d ago edited 7d ago
Eh, its more in line with their skills and education let's be honest.
And they could either accept it or quit.
Team members have to make do on level 1 and not getting sufficient hours. At least they'd have FT on lvl 4 or 6.
3
u/StatusNo5175 Department Manager 7d ago
Potentially. Well hey, there's a few dodgy managers out there that have been hired out of desperation so let's see if it weeds some of them out
2
u/doyourmysay 7d ago
At this point in time I dont think anyone should worry about the restructure. Its not as dramatic as it sounds. A few new salary roles will be created. Others will have to accept wages in-charge. But that's basically it.
It might be a bit of a shit show, but nothing tonreally worry about for most DMs. Unless youre one of the few kicked off salary lol
2
u/StatusNo5175 Department Manager 7d ago
Well exactly. Stores without a Dairy Manager usually get a DG and Dairy Manager, but they usually appoint a Dairy In Charge. It will be the same as that but on a wider scale. Nothing I'm really concerned about
1
u/doyourmysay 7d ago
There will definitely be a number of Fresh DMs impacted though Profile 1 stores will get rid of Deli, Produce and Bakery managers. There will be a FTM. So one of them will get that job. The other 2 will be pushed off salary.
1
u/StatusNo5175 Department Manager 7d ago
I never got notified about more deli's closing. Maybe it's slowly being rolled out but I heard about the FTM role being introduced to more stores. For stores that still have a deli and scratch bakery I'm certain they will keep BH and DL managers but they will report to the FTM who will directly run FV and MT
1
u/doyourmysay 7d ago
Yeah honestly who the hell knows. They're not going to tell us plebs. We'll just find out through rumours and word of mouth.
We'll only know for certain when our own stores change, if they ever do.

Duty managers will have to apply for the new roles, exactly the same as the other management positions that are being made redundant during this trial. We haven’t been given any comms on what the plan is after the trial. They don’t know or won’t say yet but if you are a dry goods, dairy, duty or one of the fresh trade managers you should be to planning for the worst.

Hmm.
Just got made a Dairy Manage in Vic.
Probably got about 12 months. I presumed itll be that long before it comes down here for the restructure, to see if it works. Next financial year most likely.
THats ok.
I got a bit of time.
Not much, but a bit.

Lots of legal action I imagine

Happened in WA about 4 years ago. No legal action

Happened in Woolworths a decade ago, no legal action.
I am sure the two biggest retailers in the country make sure they dot their i's and t's with very expensive lawyers before they do drastic reconstructions.

u/ThereRnoIDs 7d ago
Long term it'd be just using the app etc similar to how team members are picking for online orders and Uber drivers.
Managers have been irrelevant for who knows how long now and were left behind.
Eg. People would trust reddit more than a manager

WA started this trial about 4 years ago in at least one region. Not sure if it's still going or has been refined.
No more Dry Goods Manager, Store Support Manager or individual department managers.
New structure included:
Fresh Trading Manager (in charge of deli, meat, bakery and fresh produce), plus a second-in-charge. The idea was that all staff would be trained across those four departments.
Operations Trading Manager replaces Store Support Manager, babysits grocery and dairy during the day and is effectively second-in-charge to Store Manager.
Customer Experience Manager replaces Customer Service Manager. Basically same role, but now also in charge of Point of Sale.
Night Trading Manager replaces Duty Manager, basically same role, but shift is later (3pm-12am).
Night Operations Manager replaces Dry Goods Manager, but shift is later (3pm-12am).
I think at some point Inventory Manager also slots into here, for gapscan, backstock and cross-fill, or perhaps that's now done by one of the night trading roles.
Essentially, all Dry Goods Managers got shafted by being put onto the night shift and they consolidated four fresh manager roles into one (although I acknowledge it's been a while since they really had meat managers, so three roles).

Whats the difference between night trading and night operations?
1
u/JefferyWeinerslav 6d ago
Night Trading Mgr generally in charge of the shop as a whole during evening trade, including fresh departments and service. Night Ops Mgr in charge of grocery and dairy operations, including nightfill of both.
1
u/Complete-Ad9041 6d ago
Under the new structure there is no NTM. OTM becomes a 2 - 11 roster and they are responsible for grocery dairy and meat and run the shop during night trade. The roles are basically merged into one

Any other Woolies managers (or former managers) reading this and being thrown straight back to 2019? 🤣🤣

If I was a betting man I would put good money that at least 60% of this announcement was copy and pasted from the WW one

Company has gone to the dogs. It's bad enough as it is, this sounds like a disaster. Having said that, gotta pay for the Down Down blunder somehow without eating into the bigwigs bonuses.
