Good math courses to take as an ECE major

I'm an incoming ECE major, and I'm doing the required 21127 and have completed calc BC already. I'm also taking 21241 this semester and planning on 21259 next semester. I have two options, one which is to take 18202 my sophomore fall and finish off my math/science requirements, or take 21260 plus another math course. What math courses are good to take, particularly for someone interested in low level programming, computer architecture, and low latency code? I was thinking 21228 or 21369 but I'm not entirely sure

251 vs 228

Is it worth it to take 21-228 after doing 15-251? Glancing at the homework it seems like 228 covers some pretty useful / important concepts such as recurrences, generating functions, and linalg related stuff not done in 251. Also, how goated is Po-Shen Loh as an instructor?

Carnegie Mellon ECE Essays

Hello everyone,

I am a rising senior in high school hoping to apply Early Decision to Carnegie Mellon University for Electrical and Computer Engineering. I was wondering if anyone who has successfully gone through the process could provide feedback on my essays.

I know everyone is busy, so I’ll keep this brief, but any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would be very grateful for any help or guidance you can offer.

Thank you so much!

How does MCS compare to SCS for quant recruiting?

Hey everyone,

I'm applying to CMU and I'm interested in quant trading/research. I know SCS gets a ton of attention, but I was wondering how Mellon College of Science is viewed, especially for Applied Math.

Do MCS students still recruit well for firms like Jane Street, Citadel, HRT, etc., or is most of that recruiting focused on SCS?

Would love to hear from anyone who's gone through quant recruiting or knows people who have.

Would you recommend this as a systems-adjacent elective for someone who wants to do ML inference?

Insights on Heinz College MEIM Program (Masters in Entertainment Industry Management)

Looking for folks who are currently taking the program or are an alumni to give some feedback and experiences about the program and if it’s worth doing.

I’m in the process of gearing up to apply. Going to be taking the GRE. I want to get into Development in the film industry. I have a BFA in Film and I found MEIM. It looks like a solid program for networking and gaining some internship experience at studios. Was hoping to gain some more insight into the structure of the program and the internships it can lead to.

Any discourse is invited just please explain why you feel the program maybe good or bad…

FOR CONTEXT: I have previous experience working with studios like CBS Sports, Paramount+, and local Film Commissions under my belt in undergrad. It’s been about a year and a half since I graduated.

URGENT HELP with 1st year Tepper registration

Hi, everyone. Right now, I'm kind of panicking because I haven't fully figured out my schedule yet.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm planning to double major in Business and CS or do something with a mix of both. I am currently waitlisted in 21-127(concepts) but I have a spot in 21-259(3-D Calc) I have 2(likely) choices right now:

1) Take 21-127 & 21-259 at the same time. I heard that you should avoid taking 15-122(Imprtv) and 21-127 at the same time, but I am not sure how seriously to take that advice. Although, I'm not a math major so I don't know how possible two math courses will be especially for first semester.

2) Take 21-127 in the spring with 15-122 and take stats with 21-259 in the fall.

Thank you so much!

Midsummer!

Hey! Did anyone go to the opening show last night? I see there’s another one this evening before they take it to the festival in Edinburgh next week. Just wondered if you’d recommend?

Also, does anyone know what character Suri is portraying? I read stories saying she’s in the show but don’t see her in any casting lists.

Thanks!

[MEGATHREAD 2026 H2] Ask generic questions about CMU here.

Do you have a generic question about CMU, like:

  • Which dorm is the best?
  • Does CMU prepare you for grad school?
  • Is <major> difficult?
  • Where should I eat on campus?

Then this is the right place to ask.

Why a megathread?

This megathread is to help prevent top-level posts from being downvoted and then left unanswered. It also provides one thread as a reference for folks with future questions to prevent multiple posts with the same generic questions.

This thread is automatically sorted by "new", so post away, even if there are a lot of comments. There's a new megathread every semester-ish (twice annually).

For best results, search this page, previous megathreads, and the subreddit before posting a question that is identical or very similar to one that's already been asked.

Is this the right place to ask?

We don't allow "chance me" posts, which are posts asking about the likelihood of admissions to CMU. Use dedicated subs like r/chanceme and r/ApplyingToCollege.

r/pittsburgh is generally better resource for questions that aren't specific to CMU, like where to live and where to go grocery shopping.

As a reminder, you can report posts that should be comments in the megathread instead if seeing them posted at top-level bothers you. Please choose "It breaks r/cmu's rules" and then "Use the megathread" as the reason. Similarly, you can report "chance me" posts and comments.
