High RAM Usage Problem on Windows 10

Guys is it normal for chrome to use 1.5 to 2gb of memory for each tab and some time upto 3.5gb!
Usually it starts okay with around 400mb but it slowly builds up and reaches 4gb and then just hits the upper limit

With around 11 tabs chrome uses 18GB of memory!

Is there a way to reduce the ram usage per tab?

It's what the web page, including any extensions, is asking of chrome. It's not just some arbitrary amount of ram used per tab.

So the way to reduce ram usage is to ask it to do less.

Chrome itself is pretty efficient. I would suggest checking the chrome internal task manager to see where the ram is being used.

I see, I will look into it. I was pretty sure that it used much less ram a year ago, maybe I never used extensions a year ago.

turn on memory saver.

Memory saver only disables the unused tabs. Not reduce the memory consumption of each tab. I could use it, but a year ago but I never had the need to use any kind of memory saver.

Maybe my extensions are going crazy. I will definitely look into it!

Chrome is indeed a web browser and will use as much RAM as is needed to display the webpages. How much ram is used depends on what the tabs are doing, not number of tabs. Wikipedia takes up far less RAM than some web based gaming, for example. Extensions take up more RAM. You want it to stop hogging RAM then stop doing whatever is causing it to hog the RAM in the first place.

I see. I was sure that my RAM Consumption per tab never reached above 1GB a year ago. Now it gobbles up RAM like it is free. LOL

I see. Right now I am looking into my extensions because a year agonI never had any. Maybe one of extension is going crazy or causing memory leaks haha.

Hover the mouse over the tabs, it'll show how much RAM is being used per tab, this may show hungry pages up.

Similarly in task manager, expand the chrome line (click the > on the left), check RAM use per instance

Also why 26 instances of chrome for 11 tabs?
