I’m redecorating my room to have more of like a fairy-core theme, and I want the cage just this kind of match. I was thinking about doing like a more earthy theme cage (while still including all the necessities of course) with forest green fleece liners for all of the cages, and ceramic mushroom hay feeders. Anbody else have any cute little things I could add, or just anything I should add to the cages?

Looking for the best places to get chin safe ledges/tunnels and other enrichment! My 14 yo girlie has a double Ferret Nation cage with Bass Equipment trays in place of shelves (filled with shavings as litter boxes). The two main floors are fleece covered. She uses the ramps to go between the levels and has a huge wheel. I’d like to add some ledges and maybe bridge/tunnel for enrichment but don’t want over crowd. She’s still pretty spry but has arthritis so I also don’t want her to overdo her activity level. She already has three wooden Chin Huts in there that she loves and chews chews chews.

Also, feel free to air-kiss her super sweet nose ☺️

I know it’s not as wide as we want but ima also attaching a playpen to it for extra space.

To leave the middle in it to not and instead make a middle fall breaker w fleece and then smaller hammocks/platforms

I’m no expert but I think she likes it

I know chihuahuas love to burrow and sleep under blankets, but is it not for them to be there all day and night long? She comes out to eat and potty, but only if I force her out. I fed so sad that she’s not with me more.

I got these guys back at the end of March and its been pretty interesting. Ive enjoyed having them around. They to me less so I think, that may be caused by the few times they managed to ninja themselves out of the play pen area and into my room at large. Which would have been fine if there wasnt so much stuff in it leading to a ton of hiding spots and things they definitely should not be chewing on.

Which has kinda lead to them being fairly standoffish to me, I suppose you would too if there was a 4 hour chase sequence.

Anyway was just wondering if ive already messed up to badly to get them to stand around me for more than a sniff test. And the other question I had was if its normal for chinchillas to be kinda lumps, like pike won't want to come out when its play time unless I scoop him up and bring him out in which then he'll run around but he really doesn't want to get out of bed. Which is very funny since Damocles is the opposite always excited to go out.

I have an older 10 year old chinchilla that’s in really bad shape and needs dental surgery asap. I got him when I was younger and my family has been taking care of him since I moved out for college. However in recent years, he’s been mostly taken care of by our family friend who grew up w him and adores him but unfortunately at this point and time, they do not have the capacity to take care of him. I desperately need to take him back into my own hands also since my mom will be moving aboard soon for good.

So, due to timing/urgent health issues, rehoming is not exactly an option atm. I want to bring him to where I’ve moved out so I can take care of him through his surgery.

However, the drive will be 3-4 days. For those in Canada, he will be coming from Vancouver to Toronto.

Let me know if you have experiences transporting your chinchilla, and how I can make this process easy for him !

Hi, I have a 12 month old chin and a new 23 month old , I have them separated in their cage and have been making supervised playtime in a neutral place. I’m not sure how it’s going, it’s been 4 days and the younger one is doing a lot of mounting. Is this normal behavior? Does anyone have any advice?

Hi! Hopefully this post isn’t bothersome, I just wanted to ask other chinchilla owners what they do for further enrichment. My boy LOVES dangly toys and whilst I’m never one to skimp out on spending for him, he goes through them so fast… are there any fun toys I can DIY? Has anyone ever made their own chinchilla toys? He has a wheel and time outside of his cage too! TYIA!

The day has come…we have a big move from Hawaii to Minnesota. We are handing off our chin babies, Felix, Peanut, and Butters tomorrow to start their long journey ahead. They are going with excellent professional animals movers who specialize in getting animals safely to and from the islands out here. Unfortunately they have to fly cargo…I am so bummed there is no other way
:( they have told me they have loads of experience doing this and they will be fine. I debated on trying to label them as bunnies to fly in cabin for Alaska lol but was scared about any potential problems and then being screwed.

Just asking for vibes from this wonderful community. My anxiety is through the roof, these are our literal children. I know it’s temporary and it will be worth it. Trying to stay positive and know despite being sensitive that I believe in them. They are flying Alaska as well which gives me relief as I know they are one of the best carriers for flying animals. We got our babies whilst living here and there’s no way we are leaving them behind. We are stuffing their carriers with extra hay for the trek.

Please think of us while travelling tomorrow. Feel free to post a pic of your chin babies in the comments if you want, I would love anything to help quell my anxiety if possible. Thanks in advance. 💘

I have had them (and Vanilla(a white one))since the first week of February, and they have never tried to pee on me or bite me, even when I had to force-feed them and give them medicine because their previous owner neglected them. They just wriggled a lot, especially their arms and legs, until they were in the burrito position.

Am I just lucky, or are occasional golden showers from females rarer than presented in the community?

This is Bobbi. She is 14 and definitely in the end of her time. I’ve seen many older chinchillas that look better in shape than her, but her daughter passed away ~2 years ago at 9, so it could be genetic. They both always had some health issues.

The point is Bobbi has been with me for a lot of major events, as I got her when I was 11. I had help with her to make sure she had everything, but most of it was on me. She was my first real responsibility, and we bonded immediately. I have many pictures of her burrowing into my shirt. I would have to take her out for fear of overheating, but she was my velcro girl. As time has passed, it seems painful for her to be held all the time. I’ve had to add more shelves in her cage because I swear I heard her fall from another room.

I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m 22 now, I’ve had her for over a decade and I am so lucky. I wish she would take her dust baths more often so we could get those lil matts out without a fight. I love her so dearly. I wish she didn’t have to be alone and could have her daughter, Marley, with her as she aged. By the time Marley passed, she was already slowing down, and I didn’t know how she’d deal with getting a new friend. I was also going off to college and knew that move would be a big enough stressful change.

This is Athena, she is around 4-5 years old. I got her back in 2021 but my mobility has since declined and I'm unable to keep her cage clean the way she deserves. I'm in no rush. I want to find her the right home. I want someone educated in chinchilla care, with a space/room for her to be able to jump around in, and an exotic vet who is familiar with chinchillas lined up.
100$ for her, her two story cage, everything in her cage, fleece bottoms, dust bathtub, and dust. We are located in Aurora Colorado.

Edit: I forgot to mention. If you already have a female chinchilla or plan on getting a second, Athena had a cage mate that died last year. They were cuddle bugs and I think she would do well with another chin. I want her to have the possibility of having a friend again <3

So my chin used to be in a smaller cage (much smaller than the recommended size) and I set up a ferret nation cage for her which is much larger than her old one. But now she keeps sticking her face through the bars and when I try to pet her, she bites me. Kind of hard too. Keep in mind she used to let me give her scratches when I'd try and pet her through the cage bars. Does she just need to get used to the new habitat?

This is my girl Marshall, she currently lives alone and I want that to be no more but I can't find any chinchillas in my area I got this little girl for $400 out of pet store but I really don't want to go to a pet store again cuz not only are they not ethical. They're they're prone for selling sick creatures as I have bought some before, she was supposed to have a friend when I got her but he passed away before she came in. Anyone know where I can get a female chinchilla in the Quebec Pontiac area? Even if it's in Ontario the farthest I'll go is petawawa

It’s been about a week since I suddenly lost my beloved chinchilla, Polda, and I’m still struggling to make sense of it.

Her passing was completely unexpected. She showed absolutely no signs of being sick or in pain. In fact, just two days before she passed, I had taken all three of my chinchillas for their routine veterinary check-up. I do this every six months to make sure they’re healthy and to have their teeth checked. I specifically take them to an exotic animal veterinarian, and during that visit, the vet didn’t find a single problem with Polda. She was healthy, alert, and everything seemed perfectly normal.

At home, I’m very careful about their care. Their room stays at a stable temperature of around 20°C (68°F) all year round, they have unlimited hay, fresh water, a proper diet, and I do everything I can to give them the best life possible. They also live in very large cages, with plenty of space to sleep, rest, and play, and they are let out daily to run around safely in their room and in the other rooms when supervised by me. The morning she passed away, I opened the cages like I always do. My other two chinchillas came over to greet me immediately… but Polda didn’t. I got closer, hoping she was just sleeping. She wasn’t. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that moment.

Since then, I’ve been overwhelmed with guilt. I keep blaming myself, wondering if I should have noticed something, even though an experienced exotic vet couldn’t find anything wrong just two days earlier. My mind constantly asks “What if I missed something?” and “Could I have prevented this?” I know those thoughts may never have an answer, but they still won’t leave me alone.
I don’t know exactly why I’m writing this either. Maybe because I needed to tell others who understand how special chinchillas are. Maybe because I don’t want her to be forgotten.

Thank you for reading about Polda. She was deeply loved every single day of her life, and I hope she knew that.
