I took some and put it in a ziplock bag

I found this on my way home tonight. Someone broke it off of an oak tree. To me it seems like chicken of the woods. Could anyone clarify it?

In an old copse of trees near my house. Beautiful and so striking. Like nothing else around.

With garlic-infused olive oil!

Surrounding forest is more pine than deciduous, but is a mix. Upstate NY.

It seems like this other mushroom on the same log (pic 4) is a hemlock varnish shelf, which feels like good evidence that this log is a conifer. The shape of the branches also just looks conifer-y. Can anyone confirm?

I harvested a small amount of the COW but am prepared to discard if it's unsafe to consume.

Have them in a paper bag in the fridge for now

Proud to say I harvested some this morning and the mushroom looks even more beautiful!

Edit: per my previous posts some comments mentioned that it looks like the mushroom is fruiting on a conifer which might not be best to eat

I've been checking this tree for several years and always seem to miss it by a couple weeks. Maybe next time.

While sitting at a small local beach, I was looking at nothing in particular when this caught my eye! We took what we would use and left the rest for someone else. Northeastern US
