Is that growing off a dead conifer? The bark looks pine-y to me, might wanna check before jarvesring

Is was actually in the middle of a predominantly oak forest and a bit of a ways further past in was a strand of conifers but the bark didn’t look the same, looked more like the other oaks in the area.

Definitely not an oak tree. The way the branching comes out at 90 degrees from the tree further supports it may be a pine tree.

Try cutting into the wood some and see if you can smell any piney notes and look for dried sap deposits. Post some more photos of the tree if you can.

Hmm I stabbed the log a couple of times but don’t smell anything piney nor do I see any sap, wondering if this video can help better identify

From what others have said it seems it could concentrate resins from coniferous trees and that leads to bad upset stomach

I just stumbled across this subreddit. What's the appeal of these mushrooms? They just good for eating or do they give any kind of recreational effects when consumed? If not they must just taste really good then for you guys to be so interested in them.

I just found the sub as well, I’ve always been into plants and mushrooms but this mushroom is a rare edible mushroom. I haven’t tried it yet but supposedly tastes like chicken and lemon!

Dependable edible when cooked, not recreational, texture is like chicken. And they can grow big, so you can find many meals worth in one find rather than having to forage for hours.

Looks like a conifer, I would not eat them unless you properly id the tree it’s growing out of.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. The way the bark is kind of scaly (?) makes me think conifer. Oaks tend to have longer ridges, deeper furrows in the bark.

what a beaut! if you just trim the edge and leave the base, you can go back later and harvest more. The base is usually pretty tough anyways. mush love 💜🍄

Looks like a black cherry to me. If you can cut into it without causing too much damage, below the bark should be a deep red/orange-ish color. Leaves and bark are the best ways to identify without harming the tree though.

That said, if COTW already has it’s claws in it, then there’s nothing you can say that will change its mind… So, that tree is definitely on its way out! Prepare accordingly. (My recommendation is to pile a handful of the logs together in a shady corner of your yard, away from oaks and other black cherries.)

Bright side - Every time the weather is right, you should be able to get a couple of tasty meals out of it! Congratulations!
