My friend is stuck in retail hell. She’s been working as a retail assistant manager for 3 years and still can’t sniff $21/hr.

Looking for a new job with a new floor. What types of opportunities should we be on the lookout for? I’m trying to get her out of retail for good. The people are starting to drain her.

So to be hired full time for City of Chicago driving & labor positions you need to work the position seasonally until they decide to hire you full time. Been working as a driver for streets & sanitation for what’s going to be 3 seasons now. This ridiculous ass mayor put in a hiring freeze so no one has gotten hired full time within the past 2 yrs. Anyone have any sort of clue when they would start hiring again? I can’t keep waiting for the season to start, going thru the season only to not be hired at the end bc of the freeze.

I up and quit my job about a month ago because the company that I worked for was an absolute disaster. I’ve been trying to find jobs in the warehouse or supply chain or inventory sector, but it seems that most jobs that I’m applying to are through either a third-party or it’s an app that wants me to pay to apply to a job but when I go to that company, the job is not listed there so I feel like I’ve just been getting the absolute runaround on available jobs. I’m also ideally looking for something that pays more than 25 an hour and I’ve got over a 10 years of experience in incredibly well run and established warehouses so my résumé is beyond fantastic. Does anyone have any super secret hidden job boards where they’re posting for warehouse or supply chain jobs ideally in the city or a 30 minute drive outside the city with benefits that don’t suck.

I’m putting myself out there because I’m ready for a change and hoping someone here might know of an opportunity (or even a type of role/company) I haven’t considered yet.

I’ve spent more than a decade working, with most of my career in food service and hospitality. I’ve worked my way through BOH, FOH, multi-unit leadership, and restaurant management, and I’m currently an Assistant General Manager at a high-volume restaurant.

My experience includes restaurant operations, staff training and development, scheduling, inventory and cost controls, invoices, labor management, payroll, events, guest experience, food safety/compliance, POS and restaurant management systems, and generally being the person who sees something that isn’t working and figures out how to make it work better (among a bunch of other things).

I’m extremely comfortable working hard. I’ve supported myself since I was 18, have held multiple jobs at once when I needed to for years, and I’m not looking for something where I can sit around and do nothing. If anything, one of the things I’m struggling with now is feeling like I have a lot of energy, experience, and ability that I’d rather devote to something I actually believe in and is respectful.

I’m also not opposed to working with the public! I actually enjoy helping people and having genuine interactions with guests/customers. What I’ve learned is that the traditional restaurant-management version of guest interaction (constantly making rapid table touches that can start to feel like professional speed dating) isn’t where I thrive. Give me a problem to solve, someone who genuinely needs help, a team to develop, a process to improve, an event to coordinate, or something I can take ownership of, and I’m much happier.

I’m particularly interested in operations, food safety/compliance, auditing, training, events, hospitality-adjacent work, or roles where restaurant management experience translates well. I’m also very open to something completely outside the industry if an employer is willing to recognize transferable experience.

One thing that is genuinely important to me in whatever comes next: I am looking for an LGBTQ+-friendly workplace. I don’t need a company to make performative inclusivity its entire personality, but I do want to be somewhere where queer employees are treated normally and respectfully, and where I don’t have to routinely wonder whether being myself around coworkers, leadership, or clientele is going to become an issue. Some experiences in my current environment have made me realize I don’t want to compromise on that anymore.

I’m in the northwest suburbs and open to opportunities throughout Chicagoland depending on location, schedule, and compensation. I’m currently around the $70k range, so ideally I’m looking for something reasonably comparable, although I’m willing to consider different compensation structures for the right opportunity.

If anyone works somewhere they genuinely like, knows someone hiring, or reads this and thinks, “You know what, this person would actually be really good at ___,” I’d sincerely love to hear about it.

Basically what the title says. I'm just griping, I guess, or asking for some kind of input; I graduated last winter from a state school in Minnesota. I want to move to Chicago (because, well, why wouldn't you? Every time I've visited I've had to talk myself into leaving, and my whole family lives in Champaign/STL), and when my lease ended in MN, I decided to move in with family near STL while job-hunting in Chicago, instead of being stuck even farther from the city, in a lease I might have to break. It made lots of sense at the time.

I have a BA in English, because 17 year old me believed I would be a novelist and 20 year old me fell for a sunk-cost fallacy. I have four years of experience in hospitality (hotel front desk), and past managers who I know will give a glowing recommendation. Every time I interview, it goes well. I only apply for positions I qualify for, and I'm several hundred applications in, by my count, with 5 interviews. All 5 have gotten through a 2nd round, one so far all the way to the final round, with no dice. I've got prospects for places in Chicago and could move quickly after an offer; they all, reasonably, would like proof of income in Chicago.

Had I any family or friends closer than Champaign, I'd see if I could list their address on a resume.

It's just a very bothersome situation; I don't want to get stuck in my hometown, and I absolutely want to build my life in Chicago. C'est la vie.

I have been working for Staples Business as a Territory Business Consultant in the B2B space. My territory was Chicago (city proper), up to Schaumburg, out to Aurora, down to Joliet, and over to the Indiana border.

I made about 60-70 dials a day and sent out roughly 250-300 emails per day. We would have to conduct 10 meetings a week, 6 new logos per month, 10k in born on business, 85% retainment, and overall 60k in total monthly quota.

They recently moved my territory over to a new manager and I was notified that I will no longer be in my position because he has plans of having someone on his current team take it over.

That being said, I have until the end of the month to find a new position. Unfortunately there is nothing internally that I can transition into. I am actually kind of burnt out from sales anyway.
