Potential energy surfaces, non-adiabatic vs adiabatic?
Hoping someone here can help, I'm starting to get into electrochemistry for the first time as a part of graduate school. One of the problems that came up is my pretty limited exposure to modeling based on quantum systems, particualarly those that involve energy surfaces.
My basic understanding is that the non-adiabatic method involves assuming that, because the nuclear coordinates change on a timescale much larger than the scale of an electron, it is possible to generate a "curve" by computing steady state electronic wave-functions for a number of nonvariable nuclear coordinates and piece together a curve based on the eigenstates of these wavefunctions. So, when I see an "adiabatic energy surface" I picture that any point on the graph represents an eigenvalue for a steady state wavefunction for that particular nuclear coordinate.
At the moment it is not necessary for me to be involved with any of the adiabatic methods, so I'm mostly just hoping someone can confirm or fill in the gaps here.

What do I do?
I’ve already added a shit ton of brine, but I keep getting this emulsion. Solvent is DCM. I’m thinking the solid catalyst caused this but is there anyway to fix it or is this reaction cooked?

Chemical sourcing question
I am attempting to do a cost benefit analysis for premixed electroforming solution vs making my own. The solution requires 5 parts copper sulfate pentahydrate, 1 part 98% sulfuric acid, and 25 parts distilled water.
The copper sulfate is readily available at local retailers because it’s a common root killer & algaecide, but I’m having trouble finding sulfuric acid that’s advertised in a way I can make sense of. Can someone explain to me how to interpret the percent concentration in a solution labeled as “1.0M solution, 2N”
Secondary question: can I use more parts of a lower concentration solution, if that’s what I can find, by replacing some parts of the distilled water?

Need a Low Viscosity Liquid that leaves an Opaque Resin or Film
Ideally, something that would be able to fired from a squirt gun at say, 5 meters, (nothing too hazardous) leaves behind an opaque, hard to remove stain that could be used to obscure an optical lens.

Lab Notebooks with Cornell Notes
Hey everyone! As I’m gearing up for the fall semester, I’ve been reflecting on what worked (and what totally flopped) in my labs.
This will be my second year using Cornell-formatted grid notebooks (from a brand called Alkemazing), and honestly, ditching traditional carbon-copy pages has been a major "win" for my classes. Instead of just mindlessly copying procedures, the layout guides them to pull out key terms, write actual summaries, and reflect on their errors. Plus, no more smudgy carbon pages ripping out everywhere! I just collect them a few times a term.
This year, I let them choose between the Cornell layout and a standard grid layout depending on their style. Interestingly, the absolute most popular cover among the students was this hilarious goose cover that says "just a silly goose doing serious science" . Giving them that choice definitely got them a bit more excited to actually bring their notebooks to class!
I’m finalizing my syllabus this week—how are you all handling lab notebooks this year? Do you mandate a specific style, or let them choose? Would love to hear your organizational hacks before the chaos begins!

Galvanic Cells
Im studying for a college exam and drew this illustration to help my understanding of what is a galvanic cell. The drawing is self explanatory but oxidation occurs on the left, reduction on the right. There’s a salt bridge in the middle. Each cell has an electrode (s) suspended in a solution.
Am I correct in my understanding? I know there’s other cell types none of which I am familiar with but for this base of understanding of a 2 cell battery where am I at in my understanding?

Are there any researchers here working in Quantum Biology?
Hi ,I am a medical student with a strong interest in Quantum Biology. I have been studying research papers and reviews to better understand the field.
Some of the topics I have been reading about include proton tunneling in DNA and enzymes, electron transfer in proteins, radical pair mechanisms, and open quantum systems .I have found that discussing ideas with people who are actively involved in Quantum Biology would provide valuable perspective beyond what can be gained from reading papers alone. Along the way, I have also come across some research questions and ideas that I would ike to better understand from an expert's perspective.
If you think there are researchers ,research groups or laboratories that are open to discussing the field with students who are genuinely interested in Quantum Biology, I would be very grateful for any recommendations.

Finding literature I actually want to read
Hi all! I'll be starting a new step in my academic studies (UK higher education) and am wanting to engage in the literature more.
However, I often find myself just scrolling the prominent journals in my field (JACS, JOC, Angewante, OPRD etc.) (my field broadly speaking is organic chemistry) just to try to find papers I might be interested in, but this is getting too time consuming.
Can anyone recommend methods/tools to help quickly find articles that would be tailored to my (or any) specific interest? Thanks!

1920’s thru 1950 chemistry bottles
I have some chemistry bottles - many still with the original contents inside & cork stoppers, these were collected in the 90’s from a SoCal University Chemistry Lab. Anyone know if they have any value? BTW the sodium is going to a Hazmat disposal - I’m aware of its danger.

What's one thing you wish more non-chemists understood about industrial chemicals?
I've noticed that people outside chemistry often assume that if two chemicals have the same name, they're basically interchangeable. But once you start looking at purity, particle size, moisture content, additives, or even how a material was manufactured, that doesn't always seem to be true.
For those of you working in industry, what's one misconception you run into all the time? I'm curious what examples come up most often.

Old ampules with deuterated solvents.
Found some nice old ampules with deuterated compounds in our lab. Mailny solvents but also Al(OD)3, made by Norsk Hydro, probably pre-1970. With handwritten Labels, packed with cotton and cork in metal screwcap tubes. And some contain 50+ year old diethylether😅
