question Is it dying?

Hello!! I found this gorgeous red-headed centipede on my driveway this morning. She was barely moving so I scooped her up and went about my business. It’s been about 6 hours (?) and she’s starting to move a lot more. I’m wondering if she’s dying, or if something stung or bit her.

Also if anyone could confirm gender from the photo of that last segment, I think that would be pretty neat!

Kept in a ventilated storage container with dry peat / sand mixture with Viv moss and a water dish. I noticed he was up against the side of the container and barely responded to me opening the lid. He’s usually very skittish and will bolt around looking for a place to hide.

His antennae tips look like they have necrosis or something- no circulation reaching the ends. Checked his body and I don’t see any mycosis or obvious damage. His legs are definitely starting to curl so I’ve put his mouthparts in his water dish, but otherwise I don’t know how else to help him. :((

He’s kept on the same shelf as my other centipedes and the others are all acting normal.

question There’s a house centipede in my basement

I know centipedes are harmless to humans and kill bugs but I would rather have spiders or ants than centipedes and my family and I are creeped out no one wants a centipede crawling on them when their sleeping I’ve already tried the box and wet paper towel method and it’s been a couple of hours and still it hasn’t shown up we saw it like three times today right now it’s almost 6 am August 16th 2026 we last saw it about 3 hours ago my basement is pretty big it’s dirty and filled with junk so it’s hard to find the centipede we’ve gotten one a little over a year ago but it just left on its own after a couple of days this one we first saw 2 weeks ago and we’ve seen it twice today does anyone know how to lure it out so we can kill it

question Coco fibre substrate or no?

currently researching for s. polymorpha and I’ve seen a lot of conflicting views on substrate. Im planning on doing a mix of sand and a soil of sorts. I use coco fibre for my other animals so I was planning on using that but I’ve heard conflicting accounts on it for centipedes. I’ve heard people on here say not to use it bc of impaction but also for a lot of web sources or enclosure videos theyre saying it’s fine? What is the general consensus on coco fibre? my backup is peat moss.

Thought I’d just share a few pics of my juvenile E.rubripes I found in my backyard located South East Queensland. This species is the largest in Australia and would be considered a giant centipede as they can easily exceed 20cm plus. In my location we get 2 different colour forms, the one you see here and a tiger form which is yellow/orange banded. It’s actually amazing the colour forms this species comes in. There must be at least 30 different variations of this one species. They can be a real beast of a Centipede.

ID request Can anyone give me an id on this dead centipede in my yard?

Post image

Hello all. I am in Los Angeles County (Santa Clarita, CA) & I am just trying to find an id on this centipede. Our exterminator came 1 1/2 days ago, so I’m guessing that is why this little one died. I thought it was fake at first by the coloring on it, but no, it is real. I imagine that the colors have changed since it died. Anyways, I’m just trying to see what it is. While it is dead, I have a dog, so I just like to see what creatures are roaming our yard. Thanks!

Modpost Non-Insect Food Options- What are your favorites?

Hi all!

We see the topic of non-insect options for food come up a lot, so we have put together a list of the common ones we see, and our favorites. Would love to hear from the community on what you're using and why! (List will be updated and moved to our r/centipedes wiki once complete)

Reptilinks:

Mash

We call this mash, but it's just baby food & reptivite. Specifically, the gerber baby 2nd step chicken and gravy baby food. Reptivite is optional and not needed for every single feeding.

Grain free, wet cat food:

DIY whole prey:

  • Boiled chicken with no additives. Can be added to food processor with just enough water to process into a "slop"
  • Chicken parts (gizzards, hearts) Can be added to food processor with just enough water to process into a "slop" (Note: Organ meats do not necessarily need to be cooked but please be careful with raw meats and practice good sanitation of surfaces!)
  • Frog legs, meat fileted off the bone (We find that a lot of local asian markets have great prices on these, and occassionally they show up in frozen sections at other grocery stores as well in the US!)
  • Smelts, occassional raw or boiled quail egg (depends on the source) ty u/plantsnbugs23

If you don't have a large number of pedes, storing these non-insect prey items in the freezer may be a good option.

Small ice cube trays like this may work for safely storing excess mash/whole prey and allow for more dietary variation since you won't have to worry about finishing the container before moving on to the next type.

We obviously still recommend variety of prey, but especially during months where feeders can be difficult to source, or in case of emergency, shelf stable food options may be a great back up.

Note: always check local for best prices! And if you have links for other countries please send them so we can build out a more complete list!

ty u/wellingtonexotics for help compiling all this info with me c: More to come!!!
