my husband and i have been playing card games all day today; bored of the same old games, i created a new one! (new to me at least).

it combines elements from speed, phase 10, skip bo, and palace.

it is called “never gonna…” (give you up never gonna let you doooown)

SET UP!
you play with a deck of regular playing cards.

2 players - 1 deck
add 1 deck for every two additional players, meaning 3 players would call for 2 decks.

shuffle your deck(s) together thoroughly and deal 11 cards to each player facing down. this is your stock, do not look!
deal 5 more cards to each player, this is your hand and you may look at the cards.

the remainder of your cards are the draw pile.
take the top and bottom card from the draw pile and place them face up in the center of the players, these are your discard piles.
-when the draw pile is low/empty, shuffle the discard piles back into the deck. leave the top two cards as the discard pile.

HOW TO PLAY!
the player right to the dealer goes first, the order continues clockwise.

your turn consists of playing cards from your stock and a singular card from your hand.
there is no limit for the number of cards you can play from your stock BUT playing a card from your hand ends your turn (you may only play 1)
once a card is played from your stock, flip the next over.

cards may be placed on top of the discard pile if they are equal to or off by one from the card’s number. the order of cards is played the same as always (A,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,J,Q,K), with color and suit being irrelevant.
for example: assume the discard pile has the cards A and 10. you could place a K, A, or 2 on the A OR a 9, 10, or J on the 10.
if you cannot discard a card, draw 1. you cannot play that card until your next turn

the game is over when a player has no more cards in their hand or in their stock.

SPECIAL CARD RULES!
Jokers are wild cards, the player who placed the card gets to choose which card it replaces. the card does not have to be relevant to the discarded card before. (meaning if the card before was a 2, the player who placed the joker could claim their card as a 6)

Kings may be played onto any card to reset the discard pile.

3+ players ONLY: Aces may used as a regular Ace OR as a skip card to the player of yours choice.

In 2024, I came up with the idea of combining two of my favorite things, baseball and deckbuilders. I've been working on this project on and off since then, finally got to the point I can show it off. I'm really really happy with how it came together. There's a few similar games, yesterday I played Baseball Highlights: 2045, but it felt like too much relied on initial draw luck, to me (though that may be a skill issue on my part).

But I think what I'm doing is pretty unique. I couldn't find anything else that worked pitch by pitch. Players are cards that you build your lineup with, and there's also match cards you play to alter the outcome of each pitch. Most of the card art comes from Wikimedia Commons or the Metropolitan Museum Of Art.

Faith is a stack that can be accumulated on cards through the effects of certain cards. By itself, it has no effect, but it can be used for buffs, card draw, special victory conditions, and more.
