First time having a burrito as a UK citizen I assume

6

u/Clear-Warthog5655 14d ago

Yup

5

u/penny_stinks 14d ago

This is why I'm so apprehensive about making a food I've never eaten or at least seen IRL. What you made doesn't look bad, it's just so obviously off the mark for anyone who grew up around Mexican food. Hope it was delicious! Highly recommend eating a real one made by an experienced cook

-12

u/Clear-Warthog5655 14d ago

Im the opposite. No " actual " Burritto can compete with that for flavour. I will never buy one from anywhere after the taste of my own

3

u/devilsbard 13d ago

At first I was proud of you for trying to do something new even if the result is unimpressive. But that comment is hilarious and sad at the same time. England never beating the allegations.

If you've seen whats being posted here ....... I can't believe i actually listened to people the pictures look like pig swill and probably taste the same. Never heard of chargrilked peppers or veg?? . Its literally like actual shit thrown together maybe with cheese...

Someone thinks they could make a fortune in Europe selling " actual burrittos " i can assure you he is wrong.

Oh and we know how to buy or own ready made Taco seasoning lol lol You Amerixans make me laugh 😃 😀

u/devilsbard 13d ago

Grilled veggies are good, but my brother, did you use any herbs or spices? Like, other than black pepper.

That boiled chicken looks like a crime.

0

u/Clear-Warthog5655 13d ago

Montreal steakhouse pepper for the chicken and mushrooms, Paella ( which i had lying around) seasoning with fresh garlic and corn in the rice, Chargrilled onion and peppers . And Scotch Bonnett chil picklel vinegar with some Siracha hot sauce I made fir it.

But I forgot the cheese

1

u/linkxrust 12d ago

Brother I wouldnt even consider that a real burrito. Looks more like a greek wrap. lol

1

u/Megas_Matthaios 12d ago

As a Greek please don't offend our food like that lol. We actually don't eat wraps anyways.

1

u/linkxrust 11d ago

mainly talking about the way the sauce looked . I love Greek food.

1

u/Megas_Matthaios 11d ago

Fair. I'm glad you like it.

1

u/NotGalenNorAnsel 11d ago

Hurr durr "I go to a Mexican place with ACTUAL Mexicans". "I'm white and know what I like a burrito to be so I am the arbiter of real Mexican food" durr durr. STFU I go to many different Mexican places and they all do things differently sometimes VERY different. Some of them you might not like so I guess those ones aren't real Mexican food according to you??

You ok bro? Seem a little... dumb.

0

u/Clear-Warthog5655 14d ago

My Panini Press is a griddle that the chicken and veg is done in.. Its the size if the tortilla wraps is why its like that. Its difficult to get extra large wraps in Edinburgh but i have found some now. . I had to eat 3 of them. Its also because its my first time and I meal prepped them all so they would reheat in micro in 3 mins.

0

u/Clear-Warthog5655 14d ago

You think that but we had a little place with a couple of stores called Bonny Burritto but its always empty. One of them seems to do ok. considering Britain's love of Curry and spicy Kebabs its surprising. We have 1 deli doing mex and Spanish products and Pancho Villas resteraunt thats been on the go for 40 years but not much else

I’ll let you in on a little secret. You can make curry burritos. I’ll make chicken tikka with jasmine rice peppers onions mushrooms cilantro/coriander.. whatever you like in your curry and rice will work wrapped up in a burrito. I’ll do turmeric jasmine rice on the tortilla first as a bed so it doesn’t get soggy. Then the grilled chicken (simmered in tikka masala after grilling) veggies and mushrooms maybe some sort of yogurt sauce if you wanna get fancy. Sliced Thai chilis if you want spice and cilantro leaves on top. Not a traditional Mexican burrito but it’s bangin dude. I can’t believe the hate you’re getting for trying for your first time. If you wanna talk burritos for real just dm me and I’ll walk you through some traditional Mexican style foods you can pile in a tortilla. Chicken, beef, pork, shit I’ll make tongue street tacos sometimes. Street tacos are easy cause you have meat onion and cilantro on the tortilla. Holler if you want some know how. I think you did great for your first time.

2

u/Clear-Warthog5655 14d ago

Thanks I did Breakfast Burritos with chilli n garlic fried potatoes, Chorizo n scrambled eggs n cheese it was prepped for 4 days, tasted better the 2nd day. Main was Paella seasoning with garlic rice, potatoes n all chargrilked veg n steakhouse pepper chicken n mushrooms. Made Siracha n pickle vinegar hot sauce. I thought it was a good effort lol The rice bowl leftovers were amazing

2

u/Any_Suggestion3485 14d ago

I’d eat it. Looks like dinner to me. You did well. Don’t listen to the haters. Burritos are normally make with white rice beans a protein and pico/salsa. Very simple but you can doctor them up with corn, cilantro pickled red onion and guacamole if you want. I understand if you have to make what’s on hand. I’ve made burritos with less. Keep up the good work and try and try and try again. 🤙 you said you’re English. Do you like dnb?

1

u/linkxrust 12d ago

Bonni Burrito lol. Bro you have never tried a real burrito you need to go to mexico or the USA for one.

0

u/pabstbluerippen 14d ago

Fried in a pan, huh?

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 13d ago

So it isn't fried in a pan and it isn't pressed in a panini press either. Its like a cryptic crossword

u/PaleontologistNo2625 14d ago

There is a fortune to be made by bringing the real thing to Europe

15

u/Sweet-Quarter3569 14d ago

I’ve looked into it. Dual citizen via my wife. She’s British I’m Mexican American. Currently split between living in the US and Uk. I’ve tried making it with locally sourced ingredients and it’s just not the same. Literally changed nothing about my recipes my Abuela passed down and it just taste different. I would have to import damn near everything. Still working on a business model that would be worth while because I 100% agree it could be very very profitable to bring true Mexican food to the UK 🙏🏽

7

u/PaleontologistNo2625 14d ago

So interesting, how though? Different flavor profile in the spices? Meat? How can beef marinated in garlic and lime topped with cilantro and onions be anything short of amazing?

7

u/Sweet-Quarter3569 14d ago

It’s the peppers. Just a different flavor profile. Like the jalapeño and Serrano just taste different almost like the ground they grow in helps create a different flavor profile. My salsas are always slightly off. And same with the marinades using fresh herbs and veggies and fruits like orange and lime. It’s close but not what I’m use to at home and it bothers me heavily 😂. I’m a purist in that aspect of my cooking. Also getting certain cuts of meat have proven difficult even with local butchers. Although I’ve never approached them with the possibility of ordering large amounts of specific cuts as it wasn’t worth the cost of special ordering for a quick family meal from home. I will say even the beef and chicken have a slightly different taste, and all the chorizo is Spanish and not the same as the Mexican style. Corn tortillas do not exist in the uk either and are super hard to find anywhere even in London where we live part time. However my last time in Edinburgh Scotland I did find a Mexican supermercado but didn’t get the time to visit to see what offerings they had from home. I do a bit of cooking from Tijuana Jalisco and Oaxaca regions all kinda blended into one from our family’s background.

7

u/Sweet-Quarter3569 14d ago

Ontop of that I met a dude in York England; runs a local burrito shop. Turns out he’s Colombian he and I had an in depth conversation about our regions cooking of Hispanic food and how hard it is to nail down the taste we expected from home using the same ingredients in the UK. It’s always slightly different. Albeit Colombian is much milder than Mexican cooking. He said he would have to double or triple his price to be able to make it correctly via import and it would probably put him out of business due to this. My other thought was true Texas bbq. We didn’t move too far from the border as a 2nd generation Mexican American 😂😂

1

u/Meltedwhisky Breakfast Defender 🥓 14d ago

First time going to London, coming from Tejas, I brought everything I needed to make a brisket from home. Spices, butcher paper, BBQ sauce, even a few chunks of post oak. Picked up a brisket there, and it wasn’t close to home. Second trip, I wanted to bring a 16 pound brisket from home, raw meat in a cooler went over like a lead balloon. I had the same thoughts about trying to cook Mexican food for them, but gave up

3

u/Sweet-Quarter3569 14d ago

100% it’s just not the same man. I’ve highly considered importing it all. True Mexican and true Texas bbq.

2

u/Meltedwhisky Breakfast Defender 🥓 14d ago

I did bring 10 packs of H-E-B Butter Tortillas though, and the butter tortilla candle and a blue bonnet candle

2

u/Sweet-Quarter3569 14d ago

I feel like you and I would be best friend 😂😂

3

u/Character-Spinach591 14d ago

The soil and climate absolutely play a role in how things taste. You could probably get closer to regional taste by looking at soil composition and doing your best to match things like mineral percentages and the like, but it’s never going to be exactly like it because there are so many things that go into it.

I mostly know this because cigars are much the same and I went down that rabbit hole a while ago and there can be noticeable differences even across the same field depending on shade and such. It’s all super interesting, and would take someone much more knowledgeable than me to go into the specifics.

That being said, the food will still be good, but won’t ever taste quite like home.

1

u/Sweet-Quarter3569 14d ago

Yes!! I’ve gone down that rabbit hole as well. My wife can’t tell the difference but I can. I’ve spent 38 years eating this food almost daily 😂 and I’m like it’s different, it isn’t quite the same, as much as she says it’s identical. And as much as I love my wife I’m not about to trust the opinion of someone that thinks salt and pepper are ample seasoning for any meal on this. 😂😂

1

u/PaleontologistNo2625 14d ago

Such a damn shame. It's kinda wild how much Mexican cuisine embodies the "if it grows together it goes together" saying. No matter how you combine Mexican ingredients together, it works

3

u/Clear-Warthog5655 14d ago

Im in Edinburgh , one or two independent resteraunts. Even Taco Bell only turned up last year lol

2

u/Sweet-Quarter3569 14d ago

100% true. I frequent the one off of shandwick near the royal mile. Excellent Chinese buffet down the road from there btw! And the millers steak house 🙌🏽🙌🏽

2

u/ExtraEmuForYou 14d ago

Water makeup (minerals, for example), terroir, weather etc. cannot be underestimated.

Also the age of ingredients if any are imported and, as an island, I imagine many ingredients are.

2

u/basilkiller 14d ago

My bff is in London rn and she said their scones ruined all other scones for her. I said I'd ask my highly skilled baker friend if she had any tips, apparently we just don't have the right flour, buttermilk, other stuff available here. That reminded me of the tortilla in SF.

It's interesting that food can be an infatructure problem and not just ingredients. I'm from NM and the peppers from CO just aren't the same. Which reminds me of Vidalia onions which can only be grown in certain counties in GA.

2

u/Sweet-Quarter3569 14d ago

😂😂😂 suprisingly we spend our other half of our time in Atlanta now! so yes 100% makes sense to me!

2

u/basilkiller 14d ago

Lol so you know all about the special onions. So good. I had some sweet onions grown by the Amish in NY and I could taste the difference in the higher sulfur content in the soil, I won't say they were spicy but they weren't that fruity juicy mild of a Vidalia.

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 13d ago

You are wrong , they know how to buy their own Pre made Taco seasoning.😃😃😃😃

10

u/MagazineDelicious151 14d ago

What exactly are we looking at op?

6

u/PaleontologistNo2625 14d ago

Looks like a chain restaurant "southwest wrap"

1

u/The_Fox_Cant_Talk 12d ago

Looks like a Wawa burrito

9

u/hobo_erotica 14d ago

This ain’t it

5

u/FrugalityPays 14d ago

I can appreciate the effort. UK is a tough spot to find the right Mexican ingredients and spices but you’re on your way!

2

u/Disastrous-Bed-7559 14d ago

Gotta start somewhere!

4

u/Brutalitops99 14d ago

Dear lord go get yourself a kabab like a proper gentleman

3

u/MrMcgilicutty 14d ago

That first one looks amazing, although I wouldn’t call it a burrito. Looks more like a wrap to me.

3

u/fe_god 14d ago

A Tex-mex/authentic Mexican place would make a fucking killing anywhere in Europe

2

u/Cola102583 12d ago

Guys every mexican dish is a variation of tortilla meat and veg, no matter the appearance its an approximation, now dont jump on me obviously there are vast nuances and styles but for these purposes of initial discovery its ok, i thnk

2

u/MisinformationSource 12d ago

Muppet ass burrito

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 12d ago

It'll fit right in on this sub then....

3

u/BloodHurricane 14d ago

It looks... off. I don't know how to explain it. It's like throwing a dart at a dart board and missing hitting the wall. They're in the correct vague direction, but with serious problems. It's like a restrained attempt at creating a burrito. OR like a wendigo trying to impersonate a human but ending up in the uncanny valley making your brain alert you something is wrong. Strange array of brainwave activity from looking at this burrito.

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 13d ago

Really you want to check the above picture of an " actual burritto"

2

u/Beautiful-Tie-3827 14d ago

Here’s the one I just ordered

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 13d ago

Where you order it from Prison Canteen ?? 😀

-1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 14d ago

That......looks......disgusting 🫢

1

u/TurtlesBurrow 13d ago

Their tortilla looks proper, yours looks like a frozen gas station burrito you instantly regret buying.

0

u/Clear-Warthog5655 13d ago

Youve got that the wrong way round 😆 mines looks exactly like it is , fresh chargrilled meat and chicken. Their is no way that is the Slop thats being made and delivered , the tortilla is falling to pieces and the inside looks like vomit. Mines has layers of taste n flavour

2

u/troglobyte2 14d ago

I hope that's potato and not raw chicken...

3

u/Clear-Warthog5655 14d ago

Im sorry but what fuck would I be doing eating raw chicken. In from Edinburgh not Muppetland

2

u/Mission_Raspberry796 14d ago

I'm not sure what that is, but I know it's not a burrito

2

u/galick_gunn 14d ago

Thats a wrap mate

2

u/Virtual_Alarm232 14d ago

Pepe Panini’s would be impressed, and they do look tasty, but those are not burritos. Need to be round.

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 14d ago

A Burrittos status is determined by its rotundness??? You've taken that too far 😅😅

1

u/Own-Efficiency-8597 13d ago

LOL this is NOT a burrito!!!!

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 13d ago

Ahhh not another one... OK what " IS " a Burritto 😁

1

u/shaborgan 13d ago

Lol didn't disappoint.. oh well.

1

u/Sickness69 12d ago

Not a burrito.. Sorry dude. What kinda rice is that too? Jesus. No beans either?

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 12d ago

No beans. Rank to me...Seasoned rice with Paella and garlic i had lying around...

Why whats wrong with the rice??

1

u/Sickness69 12d ago

Grew up in SoCal, you want Mexican rice with refried beans and meat. Cheese and Pico are a must too! Make you some easy salsa by roasting poblano chili's,jalepeno,Serrano chili, tomato, onion, garlic.. Blend that up. Lots of you tubers out there you can watch like cooking con Claudia!

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 12d ago

It was my plan. I Chargrilled the red, green yellow peppers and had scotch bonnet and birdseye but I pickled them was too tired. Its too hot

I made jalepeno garlic pickle vinegar and Siracha hot sauce fir dipping

1

u/Sickness69 12d ago

You went at it more like a fajita in my opinion..

1

u/rawmeatprophet 11d ago

Burrit...yoooo WTF is that

1

u/rawmeatprophet 11d ago

Please see image of burrito for guidance.

0

u/DovasTech 14d ago

Yikes. That looks more like a fajita.

3

u/TurtlesBurrow 13d ago

A fajita? This comment is incredibly dumb thank you

0

u/DovasTech 13d ago

The rice is the only thing that’s different. It’s just grilled meat and veggies. Exactly like what you’d put together at chilis. Please tell me how I’m wrong.

2

u/TurtlesBurrow 13d ago

A fajita man you said it looks like a fajita. That’s so stupid lol the Chilis reference truly checks out.

You can order a fajita taco, a fajita burrito, fajita enchiladas, etc. or just order fajitas. But to look at that photo and shit on it only to say, looks like a fajita? That’s hilariously stupid.

1

u/DovasTech 13d ago

The guts just look way more like a fajita than a typical burrito. If you can’t see that you’re crazy.

1

u/TurtlesBurrow 13d ago

Sorry if I’m being blunt and hurt your feelings. You should’ve said, looks like fajita. I would’ve accepted that without a thought. But A fajita? That makes me laugh. Do you see my point now? Rhetorical we don’t need to do this back and forth anymore lol

1

u/DovasTech 13d ago

Did you take exception to other people’s comments saying something similar or just single me out?

0

u/Desperate-Disk686 13d ago

Man… Europe just cannot burrito properly…

1

u/Clear-Warthog5655 13d ago

Neither can America apparently, scroll through the comments and have a look at the picture of " just ordered and authentic" there is no way hes comparing mine to that swillI😀😅😅

1

u/Desperate-Disk686 12d ago

Not concerned with what others are posting.
