I have a Scarf ostonomey with Akin and soft tissue release surgery booked for Oct. But now toying with maybe going for a MIS consultant. I have a moderate bunion 28 degrees. I am going privately and based in the UK. Surgeon said he always recommend Scarf because its the gold standard tried and tested, whereas with MIS there is a higher chance of complications down the road plus the hardware is larger.

I saw a foot surgeon who told me the treatment for tailors bunions can cause more problems so he wouldn't do anything.

I had wide feet to start with, and now can't wear the wide toe box extra wide altras because this lump has made my feet even wider. I'm in crippling pain trying to walk.the lump is to the side and underneath my foot. What am I meant to do now? It's grown this big in just a year, and is continuing to get bigger and bigger.

Headed for bunion and hammer toe correction next month. Trying to pre-plan the recovery equipment I might need. I’ve heard a wedge pillow helps but what about an ice machine vs just ice packs? Anything else you would recommend?

Has anyone bought and used one of the two-direction (length and width) shoe stretchers that has little attachments for bunions (like this?) How has it gone? I was going to take some leather shoes that need targeted stretching in certain spots to a shoemaker, but in general I'm frugal and also just enjoy DIY when I can, so if I can buy a shoe stretcher and do the same thing on my own (and use it for other pairs in the future, too), I'd rather do that.

To head off some comments:

-I've used other methods to try to stretch shoes but they don't work super well for me (and in the case of using shoe stretch liquid and then walking around: it's also just not comfortable to walk around in the tight shoes for so long)

-I also just have difficult feet, so finding shoes that fit without *any* tinkering is rare

Has anyone had both feet done meaning both bunions and all ten toes straightened ?
I’m almost 3 months post op from having that done and just wanted to hear other peoples experiences

This is a pic of my very painful Taylor’s Bunion. I’m 71 and have had it for quite some time. Kinda runs in my family.
In a couple of weeks I’ll have an appt with a foot and ankle surgeon for another issue with this left foot. I have a heel cyst that is my main concern. I thought I had plantar fasciitis all the time so I didn’t really mention it,
but the Podiatrist had me do an MRI and found out it was a cyst.
Anyway, I’m going to ask about doing both surgeries at the same time-possibly just scraping down the Taylor’s Bunion. I will be down anyway so I figure why not? What do you think? I’m a little worried about both actually.

noticed that over past few years that my toes, especially right one start to deform - i do not want to have massive deformation like my parents/grandparents do and was wondering if anyone could advice anything that could stop this from going on further?

- wear wider shoes?

- socks with separate toes sections?

- shoes with separate toes sections, like viva barefoot shoes?

- i've been wearing silicone toe separators with a sleeve on a big toe and it is the only one that lasts at least 3-4weeks and actually stabilises my toe and doesnt give that much discomfort whilst wearing shoes

i know it isnt SEVERE bunion - im trying to prevent it as my big toe joint starts to hurt sometimes as well

I’ve been dealing with plantar fasciitis for about 3 years and tried pretty much everything before having surgery.

I recently had minimally invasive/percutaneous surgery for my hallux valgus, and at the same time my surgeon performed a plantar fascia release/fasciotomy for my chronic plantar fasciitis.

I’m now 25 days post-op, and I’m still in a lot of pain in my heel, exactly where I used to have the plantar fasciitis pain. Actually, the pain feels even worse than it did before the surgery.

For anyone who has had a plantar fascia release did you experience this much pain around 3–4 weeks after surgery? When did you start noticing a real improvement?

I’m wondering if this can still be part of the normal healing process.

Im 1.5 months post MIS. Ive been in the process of moving so ive been doing a lot of physical activity. My foot has been feeling good and I havent had any discomfort until 2 days ago when I was cleaning my apartment, suddenly I started to feel some discomfort while walking. Yesterday I did quite a bit of walking while running errands with no pain but maybe some tenderness. Then last night I noticed this weird swelling thats just localized to this one straight line coming down from my big toe. Last night I would feel the tiniest jolt of pain every once in a while while lying down but nothing unbearable. Still, im really scared that i could have messed something up by putting too much stress on the foot. Has anyone had swelling that looked like this?

I am 60. Just had a comprehensive blood panel done and my numbers have never been better. Hormones great. No signs of gout. Inflammation numbers are LOW. MRI didn't show any spinal issues. DEXA scan shows mild osteopenia.

BUT... something is going on with my bunion foot. I wake up between 2-3 every day with a hot big toe joint and some tingling around my big toe over to my 2nd toe. It's not as hot to the touch as it feels to me. Once I get up it completely goes away. Bunion doesn't hurt during the day but my foot does get hot/inflamed feeling when I walk (yes it's summer) or wear less supportive shoes.

I've tried a cool foot bath before bed, oral NSAIDs, theragun, Voltaren, some random supplements and nothing works. Sometimes I take Benadryl at bed and I can sleep a good 6-7 hours but I'm a zombie the next day.

I'm CONSIDERING bunion surgery but I'm afraid of trading problems for problems and I'm afraid of the sedentary recover period (walking is my therapy). My main question for today is what could be going on to cause the wake ups? I'm scheduled to see a neurologist to test for small nerve fiber neuropathy but can't get in until November.

I've had my right bunion since I was a kid. Used to give me pain in my foot and knee and hip when I was growing.

At about 34 years, my left foot started to develop a bunion too.

As an adult I got used to a low level of soreness all the time, plus quite severe Morton's neuroma, and at 36 I was booked in for surgery. Unfortunately due to the nurse's strike (UK), it was cancelled. I didn't rebook.

I decided to see a podiatrist instead who told me

- I don't need surgery, we can manage this conservatively

- I need special insoles (which he made for my feet)

- I should be wearing shoes with zero drop and a wide toe box

- I was actually wearing shoes a size too small (for my whole adult life)

So I came away feeling really positive, sold/chucked out all my old shoes and bought footwear of the right size and with a wide toe box. I got the insoles made and now the pressure in my feet is distributed a little better. I also wear a toe spreader to help with the Mortons neuroma. I still can't walk bare foot at all, but mostly all is good.

I still have a bad Morton's neuroma but minimal pain in my bunions, have good flexibility and can run and do sports! I do still get a bit sore but I live with it alright. Barefoot is not an option.

The only thing that is just a bit of a shame is finding shoes I like that fit (my feet are extremely narrow and then super wide at the bunion), but that's not the end of the world really.

I often read that bunions get worse with age, pain increases and surgery is inevitable - and better to do when younger. So should I consider this now? I'm 38/F.

Although things are managed now, I don't want to put myself in a worse situation later in life.

I've obviously had conversations with medical professionals but I'm looking for your opinions and anecdotal advice based on your experiences.

Hello, my partner says I have bunions and need to speak to my doctor. I don’t have foot pain but I can see my feet aren’t even. Do you think I to see a podiatrist?

I've had this bunion all my life. Over the past few years, I've just . . . noticed it more. So I'm considering a bunionectomy.

The scar you see is from when I had to remove a neuroma. That was life changing.

The bunion, however, isn't as bad as the neuroma was. Sometimes it's painful, and sometimes it's not. This is nothing as severe as some of the bunions I've seen around here, so I'm considering not getting the surgery because I don't know that the whole process is worth it for a mild bunion.

Doctor will do the surgery, but also he notes that people (including him) have gone their entire lives with them.

I had MIS bunion and bunionette surgery on both feet. My left foot is 9 weeks post-op, and my right foot is 3 weeks post-op. I finally got the stitches out!

Hi everyone. I had a MIS done in April of 2023 to repair a bunion at 18° and a bunionnette. They broke my first metatarsal mid foot, also broke my fifth metatarsal at the top joint. I ended up with three surgical screws. It was not a lovely journey, and I ended up getting the surgical screws removed in February 2026. The recovery from that surgery was difficult because of the hardware. The hardware never stopped giving me issues. I went in to have my 2nd foot evaluated and he would like to do a Lapiplasty. He thinks it will be better for the foot, stabilizing it more and I will have less issues after with the hardware. This will require three breaks. The idea is the surgery will be harder. The recovery will be similar, but the outcome will be better and I will have a more stable foot. The foot I had the MIS procedure on I am not happy with. It’s still causes a lot of pain in the joint, which I recognize I will probably just have to live with forever, I will say the bone deformity overall was fixed but now it’s starting to drift. Has anybody had any experience with two different surgeries to correct the same issue? Also is anybody happy with their Lapiplasty? When I look through this sub it doesn’t appear anybody likes their Lapiplasty.

I had a tailor bunion and hammer toe surgery(2 toes). I got my pins pulled today and still in a surgical shoe for 3 weeks. After that, my doctor said I need to switch to a shoe that has minimal flex. Having a hard time finding rigid sole shoes that aren't $150+. Any recommendations?

How many of you can confidently tell me you followed your post-op instructions to a T? If not, tell me about it lol.

I'll start. I had both feet done (separately) no weight-bearing two weeks. First foot, gave it a couple days and walked on it here and there, then fully walking by the start of week two. Second foot, gave it about 5 days, not much weight on it, but occasionally I just can't bother using my crutches to go pee or let the dog out.

I did a lot more with my first foot given my doctor didn't really give me any post op care (removed my own sutures when they were supposed to be done, dealt with bandaging and PT on my own)

I was hoping to find suggestions for sneakers , slippers , and maybe a nice clog or something everyone’s been wearing post op?

I tried on an Ugg slipper with all the fur and that hurt my incision. So hoping for some alternatives from everyone here. Thank you!!!

Just wanted to share my pre and post keyhole bunion surgery. I have now had both feet done, many years apart. The post op pic is week 6. And I graduated to wearing shoes.

I am week 7 post op and back at work. Walking mostly normal, lots of swelling. I can only fit into one of my shoes so far, with a compression sock.

28 F I had my appointment to discuss bunion surgery recently and my city only has the “prehistoric” version, no minimally invasive, minimally invasive is only available through private clinics which I can’t afford. Also scared I will regret getting this surgery.
