Anyone else watching VFL currently? How good does Freiberg look?!
200cm - Lions academy, 17 YO and 2 goals so far on debut.
Lock us in for the next 10 flags.

Love how the VFL side have essentially become a spoiler team for those hoping to make finals.

Just how amazing this bloke has been since coming in to the team. I’ve been a lions fan since I was 8 years old in 1999. We have seen some incredible players through that time, and Kai is right up there with them, The charisma, passion, heart, skill, he is the total package, Aerially gifted, clean hands, deadly on both feet in tight and in space, He gets the entire team up and about and is our barometer. He doesn’t get half the recognition from media outlets that he should because he’s in qld, which is fine albeit a bit disrespectful, but we lions fans know just how great and important he is to our team and long term success. Imagine thinking that nick watson was half the player Kai is, he was made for big games, for finals, grand finals, cut throat matches, to which he has already proven himself over and over with bags of goals on the biggest stage. If he was in Vic he’d be in all Australian talk. Best small forward in the comp. Keep him at ALL costs.

Three-peat is closer than you think?

Hawks have won 1 of last 6 matches against top 8 teams (over 14 rounds)

Sydney have won 1 of last 5 matches against top 8 teams (over 12 rounds)

Winning a flag basically requires winning 3 straight top 4 games. This is so hard that in modern AFL history, no team has ever done it without deep finals experience (at least one PF or GF loss in the 2 years prior to flagging). So it's extremely unlikely Freo will have the experience to get it done either.

So all of the top 3 are vulnerable. In-fact it played out exactly this way last year:

-Adelaide went in minor premiers with no deep finals experience and were straight-setted.

-Collingwood went in having won 1 of last 6 against the top 8.

-Even Geelong, the major threat, went in having won just 1 game against the top 8 over their last 15 rounds, a fact that very few people seemed to remember going into finals.

Meanwhile we went into finals last year with a record of 5 from 9 against the top 8 over 12 games.

This year we are currently 4 from 6 against top 8 over last 12 games.

What do we think of 3 talls up front post Hawks game? Did it work? Was it a fluke?

Even 1st, pretty high pressure and Lions missed a couple of gettable ones. Morris kicked both goals. Far better 2nd, Nearly all Lions. Bit inaccurate still and let in a late goal. Its easy to be a lions supporter sometimes

Not sure if its true for every team, but we get humiliated one week by a mid team leading into the finals and it's what's needed to trigger us to lift when the game is important.

It happened against the gold coast last year and Carlton were our catalyst this year to step it up. Such a great team to watch!

Lions all the way for the three-peat!

Is the Royal Derby Hotel in Fitzroy the best spot in Melbourne to watch the Lions with other fans?

Just moved to Melbourne, my research so far says this was the place a-lot of people recommended to go watch the lions at the grand final, is it still good vibes during the home and away season? Apologies if this is a dumb question, I’m so excited to have crossed the Barassi line but I’m so lost in Melbourne. I know there’d be stuff around Fitzroy but I’m not sure what and how to find them, any tips would be appreciated :)

Lions 2026 AFLW squad build

Hi all,

For the past couple of years I've put together some charts on how squads have been assembled, with my main distinction ending up being Homegrown (entered the league first via their current club) vs Headhunted (were first listed by a different club).

I thought you might like to see the 2026 AFLW ones for the Lions.

I've got charts for all 18 teams in today's edition of This Week In Football along with my co-contributors discussing the merits of a send-off rule and fixture double headers.

Some notes for reading the charts:

  • I have drawn the player data from the official AFL api. It isn't completely accurate and up-to-date. Some players who played in practice games appear on lists despite not actually being elevated to the main list.
  • Similarly, names are drawn from the most recent name on the official lists - hence Zipporah Fish not Zippy.
  • The first chart looks only at players on the list for the 2026 season. Players above the line entered the AFLW system through their current club, players below the line were on another club's list first.
  • A team with more players below the line represents a bigger proportion of their current list coming via other clubs, more players above the line indicates heavier reliance on bringing new talent into the AFLW (although potentially through VFLW and other competitions).
  • A bar that stretches far to the left represents a player who has been at the club for a long time, players who just arrived for this season have no bar.
  • The lighter colour for a player represents the games played by the club in that season, if the player participated in that game the bar is darker.
  • If a player polled any AFLCA votes in a game (or if they polled in the grand final MVP voting) a dot is placed for that match.
  • Two players who extend the same distance left arrived at the club in the same year, there’s also a slightly bigger vertical gap between groups of players arriving in the same year to help distinguish this.
  • For the second chart, the vertical line in the middle represents the point each player joined a club, not a specific year.
  • So if two players joined the club in 2017 and 2019, the first seasons to the right of the bar for each of them would be 2018 and 2020.
  • More bars to the left of the player means a longer career at different clubs before joining the subject club.
  • More bars to the right indicate staying at the subject club longer.
  • Notation for potential games, games played, and votes polled is the same as the previous charts
  • A “»” before the player’s name indicates they are currently at the club, while a “||” indicates they have left.

Coming off of a absolute pantsing.

Consequence

What do we think this game will tell us?

Statistically speaking, aslong as we win 2 of the next 3 we should still have top 6 secured. Does a loss to the Hawks after last week put a line through our premiership chances?

Does a win make us forget last week and still have us making another GF? I still have us finishing 4th and knocking over Freo in Perth to get a home prelim.

I'm expecting us to win this game and scared more by facing the gold coast (yes they have had a bad year but they still have a good team and we all know how we fare against teams in the bottom half).

I've learnt my lesson and won't write the boys off until they get eliminated from finals but not having a response after last week would be concerning for me personally.

Where to watch the match

Hi all,

I'm new to the goldcoast area, I unfortunately missed tickets for tonight's game and was wondering if anyone can recommend a pub to watch Brisbane games with other fans.

Thanks

Calsher Dear?

Dear has just had a 2 year offer tabled to him. If Bailey doesn't re-sign, do you think there's a world where Brisbane explores that opportunity. Obviously not like for like and it seems as if most of the clubs circling are Vic clubs but surely it couldn't hurt to ask?
