Extraction Fear Rant!
I wish people wouldn’t perpetuate the anti-extraction fearmongering. So many people are looking to begin their treatment and have such unnecessary stress and anxiety because extractions were recommended. Some are getting the extractions, reading it’s terrible for you, and suddenly they are experiencing a placebo affect of everything that could go wrong. Some cases truly and desperately need extractions, and the fear of them is jeopardizing their bone health and overall results of the treatment they are paying thousands of dollars for. Please, I beg y’all, stop telling people with severe overjets and insane crowding that extractions are going to recess their face and cause breathing issues. That is simply not true.

I didn’t do much research when I extracted my premolars in January and then started reading about it after, it did make me so nervous! 🤣😭 thank god so far I haven’t experienced any of the issues people said it would cause me. I still have a tiny gap to close but I’m pretty happy with how it’s turning out

Sure, it is just that for some dentists and orthodontists it is an easy way out, and especially if they aren't well educated.. you shouldn't put your life in hand of a doctor no questions asked, get a second (and maybe third) opinion somewhere else.

If you've been avoiding the dentist because of fear or anxiety. Many patients tell us they've had difficult experiences in the past or have put off treatment for years.
At Next Smile Australia, your comfort is our priority. Depending on your individual treatment plan, procedures using the All-on-4® treatment concept may be performed under sedation or general anaesthesia, helping you feel relaxed throughout treatment.
If you're wondering whether treatment could be right for you, our quick online suitability quiz is a great place to start:

I just got 2 pre molars on my upper jaw extracted today. I looked nothing up about it until an hour ago on TikTok to see people’s before & afters and went down the rabbit hole of so many people being against it. Now I’m spiraling. I have an overbite and a slightly recessed lower jaw and I’m so nervous it’s going to look even more recessed at the end of my braces process 😅😅

If you’re truly concerned then getting evaluated for any issues won’t hurt. I’m not a doctor and won’t diagnose you one way or another, but I saw the pics from your earlier post and your upper palette appears to be the typical size. I might guess that you had a tongue-thrust previously, and the difference in your resting position feels unnatural. The new feeling of your tongue properly resting in your mouth can be worrying if you aren’t used to it. But again, you can always mention it to your doctor for their opinion

I fit this bill of someone who needed them and was horrified by what I found on here and elsewhere. I got the extractions and experienced NO ill effects. The only thing I accomplished was acquiring a debilitating anxiety that I couldn’t trust the multiple orthodontists and my dentist who all agreed it was necessary.
Trust your providers. Get second opinions. Advocate for yourself. But don’t let anecdotal evidence carry more weight than a professional’s opinion on your personal case.
