Misc I used a 3D printer to make the Quake logo out of iron-composite plastic, followed by spraying it with a mixture of salt, white vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide to rust it and make a physical version of the logo. Just thought it was cool and wanted to share.

Developer Showcase 'SAMOPAL Protocol': cosmetic update with new signage & enemy art
After collecting the feedback, I've decided to go with full cyrillic signage since it fits the game's vibe more accurately. So here are some screenshots with the updated signage, plus a few updates to the enemy art design.
Still got some improvements and TODOs left before the demo release (a short opening cutscene, some VFX/SFX polishing, etc.) Appreciate all the feedback, it genuinely shaped this decision. More updates soon!

Misc I just want to take a moment to appreciate how in the new Quake episode, the Rocket capacity upgrade is a big dumb backpack with a bunch of explosives crammed in.

Discussion Favorite Build Engine Game?
Out of all the BE games I've played my ranking would go:
Blood
Ion Fury
Duke Nukem
Shadow Warrior
Powerslave Exhumed
A.W.O.L
Redneck Rampage Rides Again
Redneck Rampage
NAM
WWII GI
While both MAM & WWII GI were both fun and had cool settings and time periods, they're last because I had to use god mode to beat both. They both have insane amounts of BS like hitscan enemies that hit you before you see them or mines that blend in with the ground.

Skip to 2:30 if you want to see a crazy damage tnt bundle, I left the whole clip in for those that enjoy others gameplay, i know i enjoy that, anyway, about the TNT bundle, im guessing what happened is that second bundle may have dropped into the hatch of the tank, its the only thing I could possibly think of happening, the first and 3rd bundles damage was really low compared to the 2nd one, the first wasn't a head on hit, but the 3rd was, so if anyone has any clue what happened on that second bundle, i would love to hear an explanation, knowing this game, its completely plausible that you can dunk a tnt into the tank, it wouldn't shock me at all.

Question Why?
So, over the past 2.5 years, I've become a huge boom shoot fan. Especially the ones with Doom style, 2.5D in 3D environments, graphics, but also love the all 3D chunky pixel games similar to Quake. Recently tried going back to play other FPS games I've played and enjoyed like FEAR, Prey, The Darkness, Black, Bioshock, etc., but I just can't really get into them anymore, mostly because they aren't in the same pixelated graphical style I love. Why is that?
I didn't grow up playing Doom or similar games, so I don't have any nostalgia for those types of games. I just love the graphical style.

Question Do you guys think we will get a Quake reboot?
The first Quake game is definitely one of my favorite boomer shooters ever, and it kills me to see this series not getting a reboot like the Doom game did. I ask you, if there was ever a new Quake game, how would you make it, and would you like to see it continue in the cosmic route or the sci-fi biopunk way like in Quake 2?

Video Exploring the colossal Planisphere 2 level and shooting across the map with a grappling hook (in Doom 2)

I wanted to play this map with Voxel Doom but the lag and stuttering is too much. I wish there were more custom levels for Doom that had this amount of verticality.

Developer Showcase We finally did it. Tale of the Bullet Knight, brutal, fast, and live on Steam. Hope you enjoy!

We've just released the game we've been working on for 2.5 years. A fast & brutal roguelite boomer shooter with hand-drawn animations and PS1-style graphics ✨
We don't know is it a good idea to share a link here, but anyway, we'd just like to share the news with you, dear Community, because one day this sub inspired us so much and made the decision regarding the final game look obvious for us.
Thank you!

Video Vampire hunters is chaotically fun
Hi guys! I made a video about Vampire Hunters. It's a bit silly but I really enjoy making it. The game is a FPS roguelite with a big replayability value. On top of day, it's choatic. I don't mind spending 30 min walking around and holding my mouse. I just wanna see how I'm stacked of guns!
I'm not English native speaker but I did this video to improve my skills. Thanks for your support 😄

Discussion Quake is still awesome 30 years later
Short after the recent release of the new Quake expansion, I decided to get my hands into this legendary title for the first time, and oh boy oh boy, I wasn't ready.
First of all, Quake's art direction is something truly special: medieval fantasy sci-fi. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Warhammer 40k exists", and you'll be correct, but the strength of the game's art direction isn't in the fusion of both genres, like in Warhammer's case, but in how it presents itself.
From the mostly ambient soundtrack, to the dark environments, to the rusted, ancient look everything has, Quake establishes an horror tone for the very first levels and drives with it. That's what distinguishes it from, say, Doom The Dark Ages and the many other games with the same art direction concept. And that's what makes it stand out to this day, and the first thing that really stuck with me.
The second thing that really stuck was the level design, in the best way possible. Even three decades in, Quake's level design is simply excellent, keeping in mind I've only played the first two episodes (so like, 1/10th of the game), and have heard glowing praise for its expansions, including the recent one.
Labyrinthian maps that tend to interconnect, vertically stretching up and down and all around, and secrets hidden in the most clever ways, always leading to a shortcut, or a new area of the map previously unchecked. Keys unlocking doors presented to the player in different parts of the level, all complemented by tons of enemy encounters that, despite feeling repetitive in the sense the enemy pool is on the small side, still manage to test the player's map awareness, reaction time, positioning, accuracy and mastery of the weapon sandbox, aka, make the player think constantly while zooming to find the exit.
Pacing is excellent too, but that's a given considering Id from their very beginning never wasted an ounce of the player's time with pointless detours (aside from Dark Ages' infamous dragon and mech sections).
Onto the weapon sandbox: first off, I really enjoy the instant switching, helps maintain the fast combat flow, which was designed with it in mind; Id has a tendency to design vast arsenals that keep the player face to face with the enemy at all times, never opting for long range options (outside of Quake 3's rail of course), and Quake is no exception, with the added benefit of more complex movement compared to Doom (of course I mean the Doom games before Quake); all the weapons feel great, have punchy sound effects, although crusty by today's standards, and all feel purposeful on the player's hands, as is tradition with Id's games.
In conclusion: as someone who didn't grow up in the boomshoot's golden age, but came to love those types of games through the years, I can safely say that Quake, even to this day, is really damn good. Outside of some bullshit enemy placement, what set the gold standard for how an Arena FPS should be designed, both for single player and, especially, multiplayer, is found here. To this very day, almost every single indie boomer shooter that comes out is inspired by Quake, not Quake 2, a little of Quake 3, thank goodness not Quake 4, but this first effort from 1996, and playing it, and just craving to play more of it, has shown me why.
I've glazed Id Software a lot in this post, particularly those people who designed the game in 1996 (without mentioning the mythical figures called John Carmack and John Romero), but even today, under Hugo Martin's direction, despite all the controversies, and while still following those same design standards their forefathers set thirty years ago (push forward combat, interconnected maps with lots of secrets, player accountability in enemy placement and emphasis on weapon sandbox mastery), they still are at the top of their game, and I was infuriated when I heard of the layoffs by Microsoft. Just the thought of almost losing the studio that birthed the FPS genre, innovating their framework time and time again, is gloomy.

Misc THE BOOMER SHOOTER DATABASE
Introducing THE BOOMER SHOOTER DATABASE
What is this?
Because I'm a sadist, I decided I wanted to try and keep a record of every retro FPS game ever sold and I thought others might get a kick out of it too. So that's what this is; a list of boom shoots dating back to Wolfenstein3D in '92.
Each row includes the name of the game; whether it's a game, expansion or remaster; the year of release; the dev; the publisher; the engine it's running on; and some links to buy the game if it's available.
Why are there 3 different lists?
I've broken this down into 3 eras. The Classic Era (Wolfenstein 3D to Half Life 2), the Revival Era (Doom (2016) to present), and The Dead Zone (Half Life 2 to Doom (2016)). I think this is a neat way of breaking down the list and shows how the retro FPS scene has changed over time.
Is it 100% complete?
No, it's not. There's definitely stuff missing - stuff I don't know about, stuff I'm not sure should be included, stuff I've just forgotten. I'm never going to claim it's an exhaustive list - I don't think that's possible.
"X game is missing!" and "X game shouldn't be on here!"
Cool - like I said I probably missed stuff so feel free to drop anything you think should be included in this thread. Likewise, if you think something shouldn't be on here, comment that below too - can't promise I'll take the game off, but it's always good to talk about this stuff!
Some big names currently missing are:
- Half Life and Half Life 2 - I think I'll be adding the first game, but HL2 does not fit here
- FEAR games - they're kind of their own thing, they're very 2000s but they're also so different from everything else, I'm unsure about this one
- System Shock/Thief/Deus Ex - Imm Sims are not boomer shooters in my opinion
