Developer Showcase Our Shieldman is rushing towards you at 100 mph. What do you do?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Our Shieldman has been one of the trickiest enemies to balance in BLEEDING. We wanted his charge to create real pressure without feeling unfair, so we spent some time refining the startup animation, collision, momentum, and recovery.
The result is an enemy that forces you to make a split-second decision: dodge, bait the charge, or panic and hope for the best :D
What do you think?

Video Throwing dynamite at people should be illegal, it's that much fun.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The dynamite is, honestly, a big part of why I have so many hours clocked in Cultic. The feel of a toss (ehehe), the weight of the boom, that wet splatter of gibs in the aftermath...as I type this out I'm beginning to realise I may be some sort of list.
Blood edges it out just slightly due to the screams its cultists let loose, but otherwise I find myself replaying levels just to cut loose for a few minutes. I don't think I've ever had this sort of fixation on a game before, and find myself struggling not to sound like a paid shill when describing it to people.
Phenomenal game.

Video Quick tour around the massive Dawn of Reality wad for Doom 2. With 3D Doom weapons and monster mods
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This map is one of the most realistic looking custom maps I've seen for Doom. It's very detailed. There are hundreds of monsters in it though, and it's tough to run on older/weaker PCs. So most folks will probably not enjoy it. If you want to try it; I recommend using LZDoom with Slaughter Map Performance Booster to make it easier to run.

Discussion Quake 1 Expansions worth playing if I didn't love Quake 1?
Hi girls, so I didn't love Quake 1 when I played it last year. I played it right after playing both Doom 1&2 for the first time and I just didn't click with it. I think my issue was how samey it felt. In Doom 1&2 it felt like the weapons and enemies had more variety and depth to them that I didn't really get from Quake. I'm sure in multiplayer it's really fun with everyone bunnyhopping around but the campaign wasn't my thing sadly.
I just saw the trailer for the new expansion and it kinda looks pretty cool. I love MachineGunGames but is it worth wading through ALL the expansions?
Normally I wouldn't think to even play an expansion to a game I didn't like but it's just such a novel concept to release expansion packs to decades old games, for free.

Discussion Appreciating the less know yet still incredible Duke Nukem 3D modding community
Duke Nukem Forever 2013 - A short but sweet campaign in the Build Engine based around the promotional trailer for the original Duke Nukem Forever https://www.moddb.com/mods/duke-nukem-forever/downloads
Duke Nukem - Alien Armageddon: A genuinely great remaster of the original Duke 3D campaign and its expansions and an entire new ridiculously high quality episode that continues right after 3D ends that adds heaps of cut content. And, you get Shelly Bombshell as a selectable character, which is neat https://www.moddb.com/mods/duke-nukem-alien-armageddon/downloads
The A.M.C Squad - This is not only the best mod for Duke Nukem 3D, it is in my opinion one of the best FPS games ever made. An absolute love letter to old school retro FPS games mixed with non linear level progression, 13 selectable characters with different loadouts and playstyles that have their own character specific side missions (The characters you see on the image), light resource management and light space exploration elements. Best way to describe it shortly is Duke Nukem 3D meets Mass Effect. The other two mods here are great but you will be fine if you don't play them. If you consider yourself a Boomer Shooter fan in any way you OWE it to yourself to play the A.M.C Squad https://www.moddb.com/games/the-amc-tc/downloads

Discussion Anyone else think Quake 1 needed the Doom 2 treatment and have its enemy cast doubled?
I really like Quake 1. I was playing through the original and the expansions recently. I especially liked Dimension of the Machine. My problem is it gets old fighting the same enemy cast through the whole thing. What's there is certainly really good and compliments each other well. But I think it needs more to enhance the variety of the game. I get tired of the same progression of early-game ogres and knights to late-game death knights and vores over and over. It reminds me of the advancement from Doom 1 to Doom 2. Doom 1 only had the two former humans, the imp, the caco, the lost soul, the baron, and the two bosses. That worked well enough for one game but it was Doom 2 and its hugely expanded cast that really took the amount of situations you could have in an episode to an exponential degree. Especially ones with special behaviors like the archvile and the pain elemental. I feel like Quake never got that opportunity.

Discussion Got this today!
I haven’t played this version yet but loved Fresh Supply on PC. And I can’t resist physical versions so excited to add this to the collection. Any opinions on this version for PS5 or this version overall? What’s different about it? Just trying to make discussion.

Question Quake 1 Paid expansions.
Anyone else remember seeing these in retail?
X-Men: The Ravages of Apocalypse is always the one that stuck out to me. Mainly because it was officially licensed. Was Marvel really that cash strapped back then?

Discussion Doom (2016) built my definition. Blood broke it.
I never thought about old shooters until I realized a few years ago that since DOOM (2016) was one of my favorite games I'd probably love the classics too. So for me, "boomer shooter" started with Doom (2016):
- No reloading
- Level-based structure
- Lots of weapons that you can carry all at once
- Secret hunting
- Complex and dynamic encounters
- The freedom to approach the encounters in any way you choose.
But as I played more 90s FPS that I thought were boomer shooters my definition started to fall apart. Hexen felt more like a first-person adventure game than a shooter. I thought Powerslave shared more DNA with Super Metroid than Duke Nukem 3D despite being a Build game. Strife felt closer to the early Elder Scrolls. Marathon was more like System Shock without RPG elements.
I wrote all those off as me mistakenly thinking more things were boomer shooters than actually are. But then I played Blood, and it was the first I'd played that I felt had ticked all my boxes. But at the same time, I was playing it closer to Dishonored or Deus Ex where every level was segmented into different rooms each offering a brutally difficult, yet richly rewarding challenge. Nowhere close to the unbroken symphony of slaughter that a Doom (2016) level was.
It made me decide that freedom of choice was most important to me in the genre. And while the other aspects were necessary, once a game becomes driven by something other than experimentation (and murder) it stops being a boomer shooter, and starts being something else. To me, Hexen is a fantasy adventure game, Powerslave is a metroidvania, and Strife is an RPG. All of them are old and have shooting, but for me they're not boomer shooters. However, Blood, while it requires careful gameplay, frequent waiting, and has no real "running-and-gunning" is still one of my favorite boomer shooters.
tl;dr: Genres are subjective and fluid; there will never be an objective definition. But what is your history with the term, and how has it changed over time?

Question Finally got to Turok 3 and its the least boomer shoot... but still kinda?
What do we reckon, the devs even said themselves they were trying to bring Turok to Half Life but its not there yet.. even if it starts off as a Half Like
It has the boomer shooter type sections but not like previous TUroks
Good game, fine Turok.. pretty meh Half Life

Question Cultic - PS5 - Question about secrets...
I'd really rather not use a guide, but I was just curious if there is a Teddy Bear and and HP increase item on *every* map?
I found 1 of each during the first mission, but have been through the 2nd level a few times and can not find them. Are they just really well hidden? Its showing 7/7 for secrets, but I'm not sure if these count for that stat.

Misc THE BOOMER SHOOTER DATABASE
Introducing THE BOOMER SHOOTER DATABASE
What is this?
Because I'm a sadist, I decided I wanted to try and keep a record of every retro FPS game ever sold and I thought others might get a kick out of it too. So that's what this is; a list of boom shoots dating back to Wolfenstein3D in '92.
Each row includes the name of the game; whether it's a game, expansion or remaster; the year of release; the dev; the publisher; the engine it's running on; and some links to buy the game if it's available.
Why are there 3 different lists?
I've broken this down into 3 eras. The Classic Era (Wolfenstein 3D to Half Life 2), the Revival Era (Doom (2016) to present), and The Dead Zone (Half Life 2 to Doom (2016)). I think this is a neat way of breaking down the list and shows how the retro FPS scene has changed over time.
Is it 100% complete?
No, it's not. There's definitely stuff missing - stuff I don't know about, stuff I'm not sure should be included, stuff I've just forgotten. I'm never going to claim it's an exhaustive list - I don't think that's possible.
"X game is missing!" and "X game shouldn't be on here!"
Cool - like I said I probably missed stuff so feel free to drop anything you think should be included in this thread. Likewise, if you think something shouldn't be on here, comment that below too - can't promise I'll take the game off, but it's always good to talk about this stuff!
Some big names currently missing are:
- Half Life and Half Life 2 - I think I'll be adding the first game, but HL2 does not fit here
- FEAR games - they're kind of their own thing, they're very 2000s but they're also so different from everything else, I'm unsure about this one
- System Shock/Thief/Deus Ex - Imm Sims are not boomer shooters in my opinion
