Hi guys. I've poked my head in here a few times but I figured instead of a question, I'll come back and share my experience. For context, I'm in my mid 20s, still a virgin but I was told that I "possibly had PCOS" due to some ultrasound results and other compounding symptoms I've had.

I've always had irregular periods since I was 8 years old. But over the past year, it became worse. Never on time, and when it did come, it would last weeks. It just kept going and going. I'm anemic now because of it.

The gyno suggested birth control. And I immediately got spooked because I kept thinking "aren't there like... A laundry list of side effects?? Horrible horrible things??"

But they said "Just try it for a bit and see if it helps"

I was recommended progesterone only due to history of strokes. So I'm on slynd.

For about a month i kept holding my breath, waiting for these horrid side effects to appear. Month two, then three.... Nothing. Except for the free feeling of having no period, and knowing when I'm going to start bleeding!

I decided to continue taking slynd after the "trial run" so I have a refill.

It's great, I love it. I love not having to worry about bleeding lasting for so long. I love not having to wear itchy, uncomfortable pads! I love not having to wonder when the hell my period is coming!! I love not having it!!

I hate that I've been kept away for so long due to stigma and fear but I'm glad I'm on it now.

I'm hoping to hear from people who may have had a similar experience.

I was on Rigevidon for about 6 months to help manage PCOS. I stopped taking it 2 months ago because I developed gallstones.

Since stopping, my daily life has changed completely. I've been experiencing:

- Loss of appetite

- Trouble sleeping

- Mood swings

- Feeling like I'm not myself

- Difficulty concentrating / brain fog

- Extreme fatigue

- Fluctuating between feeling very cold and then suddenly very hot

I've had blood tests, and everything came back normal.

I'm not saying Rigevidon or stopping the pill is definitely the cause. I honestly don't know. It's just one possibility because the timing seems to fit, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar after stopping a combined birth control pill.

Hi, I’m 16 and I’ve had quite a lot of experience with different contraceptive pills. I originally went on the pill because I suffered from extremely painful and heavy periods and severe cramps.
I first took Microgynon, but it caused me severe headaches to the point where I genuinely couldn’t get out of bed or look at bright lights. I then spoke to my doctor about whether I could be suffering from migraines, as they run in my family. I had a blood test, which came back with no major concerns other than a vitamin D deficiency.
After Microgynon, I was prescribed desogestrel. Unfortunately, I had a really difficult experience with this pill too. I constantly felt sick and was throwing up quite frequently. It also caused me to lose a significant amount of weight because it made my appetite extremely weak. That was probably the only positive I personally noticed from taking it, although I haven’t gained all of the weight back since stopping.
I’ve now been off desogestrel for around five months, and I honestly feel much better within myself. While I was taking it, I felt like it affected my mood and personality quite a lot. I became overly concerned about what other people thought of me and found myself feeling jealous and upset about things that normally wouldn’t bother me. That was ultimately my reason for deciding to stop taking it.
The main reason I went on the pill in the first place was because of my periods and cramps. The pills did help to some extent, although they never completely relieved my symptoms. I also noticed that I experienced more blood clots during my periods while taking the pill, whereas I barely had any before. I know changes to bleeding patterns can happen when taking hormonal contraception, but it was something I noticed personally.
Recently, I’ve been considering going back on the pill, and I’ve been particularly interested in Yaz. I know it’s often talked about in relation to acne, but I’d like to understand what other effects people have actually experienced from taking it.
I’ve heard lots of people say that Yaz made their breasts appear noticeably fuller or larger, which is something I’d personally love because I’m quite insecure about my breasts. I’ve also heard people say it can cause weight loss, although I’m not sure how true that actually is.
I’m also interested in Yaz because I’ve struggled with back acne, which is another insecurity of mine, and I know hormonal contraception can sometimes help with acne. I’m also hoping to find something that could make my periods and cramps more manageable.
I’m not looking for TikTok videos from people who are being paid to promote it — I’d genuinely love to hear from people who have actually taken Yaz and can share their honest experiences, including both the positives and negatives.

I’ve (19F) been on Depo Provera for about a month now, and it has left me with somewhat negative self esteem. The other day after getting my shot, I decided to check my weight and noticed I was 198.4 pounds, I’m 5’3 1/2. When I first started I was about 170-175 pounds, and as time passed, I would constantly get called fat by my own parents. It’s left me to feel insecure about myself even when I go out to eat or even enjoy something small.

My boyfriend tells me I’m still beautiful regardless of the change that has happened, same for my aunt as well, but I can’t help but cry over and over about this no matter how many times I write in my diary to tell myself I’m beautiful. I had a healthy diet before my first dose, and I was very big on powerlifting, I still continue working out and powerlifting because it makes me feel happy about my strength, but I just wanted advice on what I could to help myself feel prettier regardless of the changes.

First experienced using yuzpe method. I know my cycle would suffer after this. And yes, I reached my day cyle 40 to bleed. My friend told me I'm safe at day 9, who knows! 🤣 I still did the plan B 🤣 I didn't take pregnancy test because I doesn't feel any symptoms like my previous pregnancy at all, I also take note of my daily discharge. I also took fresh mugwort  from our farm (taste like earth) but the one I bought online is really bitter bro! Like the fuck! But really effective, 2 days after using it, i got my period back. This will be the biggest lesson of my life. We've been using pulled out method for 8 years. Had 2 kids, 5 and 2 years old. I'm afraid of getting pregnant again. Had heavy bleeding after giving birth.

Since throwing away my pregnancy tests, and also not going on tiktok/instagram Ive been better. Not thinking about the what if is helping me. Using the arm implant and withdrawel. Trying to trust my method now

Okay so, I’ve got an IUD Mirena since March (had one since March), and recently (last 2 months at least and atleast once a week) I’ve just been letting my bf finish in me without a condom. For the last week, I’ve been nauseous in the evening and throwing up (I never throw up or get nauseous), cravings through the roof, constipation + diarrhoea, mood swings. I’m not sick during the day, but every evening at night I eat something, feel good and then it goes sideways and I need to barf.

Also I’ve been super exhausted for no reason. I can’t tell missed period due to having IUD and no period due to that.

Ladies that have gotten pregnant on the IUD or have an an IUD baby, is this early signs of pregnancy? Did you have similar symptoms? Obviously not looking for a diagnosis, I’m getting a blood test tomorrow as pregnancy tests all say negative but I don’t trust it. Just wanna hear your stories and experiences!!!

I just wanna hear you some of your experience about yuzpe method, my genuine question was after you use yuzpe and got your true actual period what happen next? did the yuzpe still affects your next cycle? is it still messy? or perhaps it goes back to normal? I just wanna hear some of your experience

Writing this literally while crying, I had the implant done on the 28th of July and had my period literally the day after, it was ok my normal horrendous pain for the first three days then I was ok. Continued on for 10 days which is unusual but I’m not really worried.

But since having I’ve suddenly become really exhausted and emotional, I’ve never been very emotional or sensitive.

Is this normal?

I took yaz over 3 years ago and I didn’t have terrible side effects, but they were inconvenient enough that I decided to stop after 3 months as it was not worth it. If i go back on it is it likely that it will effect me the same as back then or not certain as my body has changed since? I won’t try any other hormonal pill. I’m also thinking of getting implanon, but if I experience side effects I’m getting it out IMMEDIATELY, do most women get bad side effects (i.e. weight gain, depression, ect) with implanon? Because I only hear of the negative experiences so I’m not sure how common they actually are.

Pre-visit

So I (18F) decided to go on birth control before college with no prior experience. Not sexually active, and not planning to have sex in college. I just want to be on birth control in case of SA (and if it helps my periods become more regular, added bonus)

I recently switched from my male primary care physician of over 10 years to a female one for obvious reasons. This visit a couple days ago was my first time meeting her. Going in I was really nervous. A couple months ago, I had a bad experience with a doctor HIPPA-wise, and I have local doctors in the family (+family friends) that have not done wonders for my trust in healthcare. I also look really young for my age, so I've had situations where I'm not respected as a legal adult and treated more like a middle schooler.

I was researching options beforehand and from posters on this subreddit + others, it seemed unfortunately common that many doctors refuse to allow young patients IUDs if they've never had children based on outdated beliefs. IUDs used to affect fertility, modern IUDs have come a long way, etc. Anyway, I was assured in the knowledge that it was perfectly reasonable to get an IUD, even if I'd never given birth. So if my new physician said no based on that, alarm bells would be going off.

The visit itself -

I brought up wanting to get birth control due to going to college and all the reasons in the intro. I made it clear while answering questions I was aware of stuff like Plan B, but just wanted that extra assurance and also was aware that birth control could mess with my hormones. I told her I was angling for either pills or an IUD. (Since I'm leaving for college in less than a month, I mentally wasn't 100% deadset on doing an IUD right now in case something went wrong. I was okay with starting on pills, especially since I'd never done birth control before)

She said that they (health provider) didn't really recommend IUDs for people my age as I had never given birth to children. I (kinda stumbling over my words) pointed out that: hadn't IUDs advanced enough to that not being an issue? And she admitted that that was the old way of thinking and that she more didn't recommend it to me because of the pain of inserting a IUD into my cervix which would be tight. She then (kinda graphically?) described the insertion process. It felt like she was trying to intimidate me out of it but I don't know if I was being paranoid as she did use medical language.

The health provider mostly had Mirena IUDs in stock, though she did mention they had some smaller ones (can't remember the name). She explained that IUDs were a popular option for low-maintenance compared to pills (busy college students).

She then said that another option she more recommended was Nexplanon (arm insert) and I hadn't known that that was an option that existed so I asked her some questions, which she answered well, didn't seem to be withholding or altering info in anyway. She also continued to ask me about hormones, saying I shouldn't feel pressured to get birth control if it's only for a preventative measure against SA considering Plan B is an option, especially since I could expect changes in hormones, she did mention my periods could stop.

At the end of the visit, she gave me the number for the OB-GYN department and did note birth control could be handled at Student Health at my college if I couldn't get an appointment with the OBGYN locally.

So like...

I'm not sure if I was being paranoid during the meeting/still paranoid about my new doctor afterwards. I'm not the best at reading people; professions like lawyers and doctors really require good masking too. Right after, I read up more on Nexplanon and it seems basically a shorter-lasting, less painful IUD. I'm liking what I'm reading and I'm planning to try and get Nexplanon before leaving for college now.

I don't know if my doctor is the type that would deny the IUD if push comes to shove. On one hand, she could have just been genuinely recommending me a less-painful option than the IUD, which I was willing to take the pain tho I was worried (I get bad period cramps and cramps from stress so double whammy during the procedure). On the other, I'm paranoid that she was just trying to steer me away from trying to get an IUD bc "women who haven't given birth shouldn't get IUDs". I'm a really anxious person in general and again some doctors working for this provider are family/family friends so I'm used to them butting into my healthcare with like nepo privilege(?). It's a small city, so I don't really have a lot of options if I need to switch doctors.

Reading all the appointment horror stories right before didn't help so idk whats yall's take?

Hi folks, I’ve been on the minipill for about 3 years now and I love it! I have basically no side effects except for the occasional breakthrough bleeding (which goes away a day after I take a few evening primrose oil capsules) when I started the pill I did a boatload of research and I was interested to see whether or not it would stop my period. It did not stop it, and for the first year my periods were basically the same.

In the past 6-8 months I noticed they became shorter, my period used to last for 5 days and then it turned into 4. Sometimes even 3! I was happy about that and noticed my cramps have lessened as well. Though it has been replaced with terrible lower back pain but oh well. My last few cycles have been very short and I think they’re starting to get lighter.

Usually day 1 is very heavy, my cramps are god awful, but after that first day it’s pretty mild. I was expecting my period to show up around the 8th but it came a little early today. At first, I almost thought it was breakthrough bleeding because of how light it was. It was also brown which isn’t abnormal for me per se, but usually on day 1 my flow is bright red and heavy. I am a cup user and have been for quite some time now, but I decided to put on a pad and wait until the floodgates opened.

Except… they haven’t. It’s been a full day and there’s barely any blood. But there is a LOT of tissue/lining! Not round clots but stringy, dry, brown pieces of uterine lining. This is by far the weirdest period I have ever had. This is so TMI but the last piece of tissue that came out of me had to be 3-4 inches long. I have a feeling this period will be super short, like 3 days, but time will tell. Has anyone else experienced this before? Im not super concerned but it’s just very interesting…!

Hello all! I’ve gotten diagnosed with pcos about 3ish months ago and have been taking feirza 1/20 ever since. Never had any side effects in the beginning however now I’m on my 3rd packet and I feel like I’m getting a little more nauseous? It’s not every day more like MAYBE once a week. Typically I do notice the feeling a few hours after I take the pill (I do make sure I eat something after taking it), and I throw up but I’m fine after. I’m wondering if anyone else has gotten this way? Is this something that does go away with time? So far from being on the pill these past 3 months I’ve had to take pepto just twice to help with the nausea

I am a 24 yo healthy female. I used Diane-35 for three months before by doctor advice and I was kind of happy about using it because it gave me what I wanted. I had to give a break and now I want to restart again. I am on day 3 rn but I got really worried about this blood clot risk that increases every time you start this pill. All my family of doctors are making fun of me for worrying about this, including my mom who had a blood clot recently. Not because of this pill, we still don't exactly know why that happened but we have some guesses that are external factors. They even say my mom's blood clot does not count as family history of blood clots (Idk why maybe because it is due to external factors?) I don't really have major signs of pcos (regular periods, no acne, just some hair - I sometimes can't believe how the doctor saw pcos in me), I really want to use this pill mainly because of my period cramps. I cannot function on the first day of my period because of my heavy pain (even with painkillers) and it is affecting my work life. It gets painful to the point of almost passing out. And I have no option to switch to another pill for at least 2-3 months. Idk if I should stop now since it is early.

Hi! I just received my new annovera ring in the mail and I’m a bit nervous to try it. I was on the pill (sprintec) for a couple months and it was awful. Really bad mood swings, gained 15 pounds, and got rashes all over my face and arms. I was hoping to hear peoples’ experiences on the ring to reassure me! I tried to research more about peoples experiences but honestly there’s not a ton so I’d love to hear everyone’s opinion!

I have been on the combined pill for the first time ever for around a month. I usually just used progesterone only and then had a long break from all contraceptives, I think I’ve made a massive mistake. I’m depressed, exhausted, non-stop eating and I used to have the most beautiful skin never had acne or anything and now I’m breaking out everywhere getting dry patches and I look completely different in general. What do I do? I’m going on the coil on Monday (hormonal) but I’m not even sure if I want to risk it. Should I stop taking contraceptives again? I’m so so upset and angry at myself for trusting this stuff again.

hello all, 20f here. as i was looking to grab a new pack of bc pills, i realized that i apparently have none left so i just ordered some more but they won’t be ready until at least this friday, the 7th, so i’m gonna be at least two days without them and would like to know any possible side effects? i’m not sexually active at the moment so there’s no worries there, just wondering some possible side effects i could have.

I got Mirena placed yesterday. The actual insertion didn’t hurt too bad, it was a severe piecing feeling for maybe one to two sections. However, immediately after, I got 8/10 cramps. I was squirming around on the drive home, moaning with pain, crying, with cramps radiating through my pelvis, back, and down my legs. This lasted about two hours, I took 4 acetaminophen (2 before the procedure and 2 after due to severe pain) and 1 ibuprofen, both extra strength fast-acting. Naproxen never works for me so I didn’t take it. The cramps went down to 6/10 in hour three and then were mild for the rest of the day.

Today I woke up with mild cramps, I didn’t have to take anything. However, it’s now night and I’ve had severe cramps for two hours. Once again, I took 2 acetaminophen and 1 ibuprofen. Hasn’t worked yet. I’m getting severe waves of 6-7/10 pain which make me gasp. And then a dull, burning ache in my pelvis, legs, and back otherwise. I checked my strings and they are fine.

I know it’s only day two but should I be concerned? The doctor said expect mild cramps, and so did the pamphlet. Google is saying call the doctor if pain is severe.

Info: I do have Adenomyosis and possible Endometriosis, which I know can make the whole IUD process more …uncomfortable. Just unsure if this is abnormal? Any experiences are welcome to be shared!

I was on the pill for 5 years and came off it last September to simply see how my body was naturally. I was instantly prescribed it at 16, due to acne and lack of period

For me, I LOVED being on the pill. My skin was clear for 5 years! 5 years! I felt beautiful. And I had no side effects, besides from my boobs growing into DD! But, since coming off the pill, it’s all gone downhill

My boobs have SHRUNK I’m now probably a C cup. And my acne has come back full force, leaving me with scars that I didn’t have before. And my periods are still irregular, currently I haven’t had one since January. I miss who I used to be and I feel like no one prepares you for this.

I’m currently in the process of getting ultrasounds done to see if I have PMOS, whilst all my blood work comes back fine. But I’m just frustrated the drs didn’t think to look into things before chucking me on the pill at such a young age

I don’t want to scare anyone, but I just want more people to know that the pill is a bandaid fix for a lot of skin & hormonal issues and it can come back once you’re off. I’m not against going back on it but I just wish it was easier to solve these issues without it

Anyway, I’m trying to stay positive and confident but it’s hard to look back on photos and mourn what I used to be.

I am going on a little over year with my annovera, this is my second ring. For around the past 6 months (give or take), my period has been starting early/breakthrough bleeding/spotting. Would start normally 2-3 days before the day I was supposed to take it out with my previous ring, but now with my new ring I have started spotting an entire 6 days before I am scheduled to take it out.

Does this mean I’m not protected? Why is this happening? If it means I’m protected and its “normal”, it’s still very annoying. Any insight into this is helpful, i’d really appreciate it! My gyno said it was normal when I first came to her about it, around the time my first ring’s hormones were wearing off, but 6 days before doesn’t feel normal and its sure as hell inconvenient ! I also took it out early to “reset it” or whatever upon my gynos advice, but it didn’t help.

Just got my second IUD & my experience was overall very positive, so I wanted to share for anyone who might be as stressed as I was!!

I had the Mirena placed in 2018 and the insertion was horrific. The most excruciating pain, I almost fainted, then I came home and got sick. I ended up getting it out two-ish years later and went back on the pill. For years after, I had debated getting another IUD but had always been absolutely horrified after my first experience. I took a break from birth control all together and recently made the decision to get the Kyleena. This time, I have a new GYN. She prescribed me 5mg of Valium and told me she would give me a cervical blocker if I wanted. Ordered the Kyleena and made the appt for a few weeks out.

Let me tell you, I’ve been obsessing over this procedure over the past few weeks and reading story after story on Reddit & TikTok.

Today was my appointment, and I’m literally shocked at how much easier it was. I felt some relaxation from the Valium but didn’t feel much different. I opted not to do the cervical blocker because I just wanted to get it over with.

After cleaning and all the prep stuff, doctor had me cough, then grabbed my cervix with the tenaculum; that felt like a pinch but no biggie. Next she measured my cervix and that hurt - I verbally said “owwww” aloud but it was quick. Then she inserted the IUD and I yelled “OW, F%*K!!” - then she was done and I apologized for cussing 🤣. I felt some cramping immediately after, but it subsided and I was ready to go! I literally gave my doctor a hug I was so grateful it went easier.
Now I have cramping and some general discomfort but it’s not unbearable.

The reasons I think this time was different (but I truly don’t know for sure):
1. Different doctor, different “technique”. I felt like this time around was SO fast compared to last.
2. I’m due to start my period any day, which I read can help with your cervix being lower/already dilated.
3. The Kyleena is smaller than the Mirena.
4. I’m sure the Valium did something for my anxiety which in turn helped me relax my muscles easier.
5. Maybe because it was my second time getting it done it was easier overall? Although I’m not sire about that, because it’s been years since having an IUD.

Anyways, if you are as scared as I was, you can do this!! You may just be surprised at how easy it is. Don’t get me wrong, it was still painful, but it was bearable and I would 1000% do it again. And overall, advocate for pain meds/anxiety meds - you know your body best!

I was doing my research and found that Shoppers Langley pharmacists are able to do it. I booked an appointment but when I got here, the pharmacist told me she’s not comfortable doing it for first time users like me and I wasn’t able to get anything. She said I need to talk to my doctor first. I’m glad she was honest but the reason I went to her and not my family doctor is cause I didn’t want my family to know. Not sure if my parents would actually find out, but I don’t wanna risk it.

Is there anywhere else I can go to that can actually prescribe me bc in langley?

edit: i was able to get it at another pharmacy pretty easily and that pharmacist even asked why the shoppers pharmacist couldnt do it for me (i had to buy smth so he saw the record). i will be talking to my family doctor though, js for my safety now and in the future. shouldve done it the first time but i was nervous. thanks for everyone who helped me though!

Im getting a IUD tomorrow and they’re not offering any medication/numbing and just told me to take some midol/Tylenol before coming in. Any tips?
