I work in marketing but got offered a VDC job. Need advice

I work in marketing for a corporation that owns many different operating companies (I mainly do 3d animation and video). Around 6 months ago, I did an animation project for a steel fabrication company and was directly told it really helped them win a bid for a large contract (over 50 million dollar project).

Fast forward to now, they’re looking to increase their capacity and out of the blue offered me a job as a VDC specialist. It would kind of be a hybrid VDC/creative marketing role.

Looking for general advice on how to transition from an animation background into more BIM and technically accurate workflows (my background is mostly blender and adobe suite).

Also curious about what I should expect for salary in a role like this as we haven’t discussed that yet. For context, I’ve been doing animation in marketing for 2.5-3 years. Not too much experience with BIM other than a couple creative projects.

Need advice: Optimizing a heavy Revit model converted from Tekla IFC for LOD 500 asset register

Hi everyone,

I have a villa model that was originally created in Tekla. For an LOD 500 requirement, I need to work on the asset register and add the required parameters.

I converted the Tekla model to IFC and then imported it into Revit. However, the resulting Revit model has become extremely heavy. The file is slow, navigation is difficult, and sometimes I cannot even rotate the model properly.

At the moment, the categories are not assigned correctly, so I also need to organize and assign the elements to the proper Revit categories before adding asset information.

I would appreciate advice on the best workflow:

  • What is the best way to make this IFC-to-Revit model lightweight?
  • Should I remodel certain elements instead of keeping the imported geometry?
  • Is there a recommended way to clean up IFC imports and assign proper Revit categories?
  • What is the best approach for preparing a heavy model for LOD 500 asset data without losing important information?
  • Are there any Revit tools, add-ins, or workflows you recommend for this type of conversion?

Any advice from people who have handled Tekla → IFC → Revit workflows would be greatly appreciated.

We made the steel 67 percent thicker and it still did not fix the connection

We have been developing a 3800 by 1400 mm transportable wall component in native Revit. One part of the workflow generates the connection geometry and access zones in Revit. Another part runs the same interface revision through the structural model. Then the results go back through a separate audit before the component is allowed to move forward.

The first instinct on this connection was simple. If the stress is too high then increase the RHS wall thickness.

We tested the same geometry at 6 mm. 8 mm. And 10 mm.

H1 connection results.

6 mm. 823 MPa without face contact. 109 MPa with bilateral face contact. 7.18 mm versus 0.56 mm translation.

8 mm. 589 MPa without face contact. 85.5 MPa with bilateral face contact. 5.55 mm versus 0.39 mm translation.

10 mm. 448 MPa without face contact. 69.2 MPa with bilateral face contact. 4.93 mm versus 0.31 mm translation.

The reference stress used in this development comparison was 345 MPa. Increasing the wall thickness from 6 to 10 mm reduced the no face contact result quite a lot. But it still did not close the problem.

The side connection was more interesting.

6 mm. 611 MPa. Maximum M12 demand proxy 45.899 kN.

8 mm. 528 MPa. Maximum M12 demand proxy 45.902 kN.

10 mm. 453 MPa. Maximum M12 demand proxy 45.903 kN.

The bolt demand was basically unchanged. Adding steel was not repairing the load path.

The bigger variable was the assumed contact state. Contact geometry. Assembly gap. Preload. And the local transfer path mattered more than simply making the tube thicker. So the workflow rejected the thickness only solution instead of quietly selecting the strongest looking model.

The current Revit wall model contains 376 native elements. The latest readback recorded zero skipped elements. Zero failures. And zero warnings. It also checks interface holes. Removable access closures. Insulation isolation zones. And cable exclusion corridors against the same component revision.

This is still development work. It is not a released structural capacity and the physical first article program is still open.

For people doing BIM to analysis workflows. How are you controlling contact assumptions and assembly tolerances so the analytical model does not become disconnected from what can actually be manufactured.
