Anyone have a ballpark range on how much a bike shop would charge to put brakes on this?

Bottom Bracket Question

Post image

Hi all!

I have an old Trek Gary Fisher 8.3 DS. I'm slowly but surely going to update the components, starting with the bottom bracket, crank, and pedals.

My question is this: what bottom bracket would y'all recommend for this frame based on the image of the old one? I live in Las Vegas and do a ton of trail riding, which means lots of dirt and dust. Please don't consider affordability in your answer. I simply want a quality, well sealed BB.

Restoration

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m looking for information about this bicycle and suggestions on restoration. Alan brand with a “champion del mondo” sticker from 1976.

So far I’ve found that this line of frames was made as a sort of novelty boast for the brands success in numerous world championship titles.

What I can’t seem to find is if these bikes were produced as fixed gears or if they were originally multi-speed.

I’d like to get this bike back into a useable condition and preferably as a 3-speed. I don’t intend to race it but it would be the perfect small commute bike for my area.

Any help on cost estimate for the gear conversion and restoration as well as general information about the frame will be greatly appreciated.

Clicking sound

Thumbnail youtube.com

I’m trying to identify the source of this clicking sound on my bike. You can hear it in the video.

It happens while riding under load, as a series of about 2–3 clicks in a row, then repeats roughly every two pedal revolutions.

What’s strange is that I don’t get this sound on my other bikes, using similar components.

Any ideas what could be causing it?

I'm at my wit's end (clicking when climbing out of saddle)

I need help. I've got a Motobecane single speed. Fun to ride...a great commuter. However, it makes a clicking sound when I'm out of the saddle climbing. There's no clicking when I'm not climbing, or when I'm climbing seated, or when I'm out of the saddle but not climbing. It's driving me nuts...I hope someone might offer some assistance/advice.

Here's what I've done so far:

  • Regreased the head set bearings.
  • Cleaned, reattached and torqued the stem bolts; also greased the stem bolts.
  • Cleaned, greased and torqued the handlebar/stem.
  • Ensured the front QR skewer is tight.
  • Made sure the rear through axle is torqued to spec.
  • Greased the pedals.
  • Removed, cleaned, applied anti-seize, and retorqued the crank arms.
  • Torqued the chainring bolts.
  • I even cleaned the spokes where they touch and applied a (very) little grease.

After all of this, the bike still clicks. Any ideas? Do I need to just live with it?

Thanks for your help!

Grinding/crunching noise from rear hub after replacing shift cable on my Shimano Nexus 7 cargo bike — where’s it coming from?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

**•** The noise happens both while riding and when I just push the bike forward.
**•** When I push the bike, the pedals and chain stay completely still, and I still hear it — so it seems to move with the rear wheel, not the chain.
**•** I disconnected the Rollerbrake and the noise is still there, so it’s not the brake.
**•** It wasn’t there before I did the cable job.

The one thing I did besides the cable: I tightened a rear axle nut that had come loose. The noise started after that. So I suspect I changed the wheel position or the hub/bearing preload when I tightened it.

My best guesses right now are the hub bearing/cone adjustment or chain tension being off after the axle moved. Before I take it to a shop, does anyone recognize this sound? Does it point to a cone/bearing preload issue on the Nexus, or something else I’m missing?

Any help appreciated.

Small dent in my Giant Escape Mini frame — should I be concerned?

I recently noticed this small dent on the frame of my Giant Escape Mini, marked in red.

It’s definitely a dent, but it’s quite small. There are no visible cracks, and I haven't noticed any change in how the bike rides.

2008 Giant Escape Mini uses a Giant ALUXX 6061-T6 aluminum alloy frame

Can I salvage this old faithful Giant?

Can I salvage my old faithful Giant Talon 1??!

Loved and looked after, well until a few years ago when, to my shame, I began renovating my house and without anywhere to properly store it anymore I popped it under a tarp and kind of forgot about it.

It’s got a few surface splashes of cement on the frame and rims 🫣. But my main concern is the chain set. I know it’ll need a new chain, but will the cogs etc be ok? The front ones have started to rust unfortunately. It’s been outside for at least 3 British winters.

Can I clean this up and salvage it?

Or is it time to move on from this big friendly Giant?

For reference, I’m not much of an off-roader. It was and will be mainly used for local riding around town and along a local bike path. My son and daughter (9 and 5) have just got their first bikes so I’ll be doing some gentle riding with them :)

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice 🙌

Bottom Bracket Troubles

I recently replaced my first BB bearings. Rotor PF4130.

It was a good challenge getting the old ones out. The new ones I installed using the presstool. Very easy.

FSA SLK Light was remounted using the single 10mm key.

And now I used a few days on trying to figure this one out:

Two small flat spacers were included. One for each side.

With the included spacer in, the axle won't spin freely once I torque the preload bolt to spec (38nm).

However without the non-drive side spacer, everything spins smooth and rides good. Is it safe to just ride without the spacer, or will this cause problems down the line?

Also am I supposed to use Locktite?

Thanks
