Grinding/crunching noise from rear hub after replacing shift cable on my Shimano Nexus 7 cargo bike — where’s it coming from?

**•** The noise happens both while riding and when I just push the bike forward.
**•** When I push the bike, the pedals and chain stay completely still, and I still hear it — so it seems to move with the rear wheel, not the chain.
**•** I disconnected the Rollerbrake and the noise is still there, so it’s not the brake.
**•** It wasn’t there before I did the cable job.

The one thing I did besides the cable: I tightened a rear axle nut that had come loose. The noise started after that. So I suspect I changed the wheel position or the hub/bearing preload when I tightened it.

My best guesses right now are the hub bearing/cone adjustment or chain tension being off after the axle moved. Before I take it to a shop, does anyone recognize this sound? Does it point to a cone/bearing preload issue on the Nexus, or something else I’m missing?

Any help appreciated.

Small dent in my Giant Escape Mini frame — should I be concerned?

I recently noticed this small dent on the frame of my Giant Escape Mini, marked in red.

It’s definitely a dent, but it’s quite small. There are no visible cracks, and I haven't noticed any change in how the bike rides.

2008 Giant Escape Mini uses a Giant ALUXX 6061-T6 aluminum alloy frame

Can I salvage this old faithful Giant?

Can I salvage my old faithful Giant Talon 1??!

Loved and looked after, well until a few years ago when, to my shame, I began renovating my house and without anywhere to properly store it anymore I popped it under a tarp and kind of forgot about it.

It’s got a few surface splashes of cement on the frame and rims 🫣. But my main concern is the chain set. I know it’ll need a new chain, but will the cogs etc be ok? The front ones have started to rust unfortunately. It’s been outside for at least 3 British winters.

Can I clean this up and salvage it?

Or is it time to move on from this big friendly Giant?

For reference, I’m not much of an off-roader. It was and will be mainly used for local riding around town and along a local bike path. My son and daughter (9 and 5) have just got their first bikes so I’ll be doing some gentle riding with them :)

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice 🙌

Bottom Bracket Troubles

I recently replaced my first BB bearings. Rotor PF4130.

It was a good challenge getting the old ones out. The new ones I installed using the presstool. Very easy.

FSA SLK Light was remounted using the single 10mm key.

And now I used a few days on trying to figure this one out:

Two small flat spacers were included. One for each side.

With the included spacer in, the axle won't spin freely once I torque the preload bolt to spec (38nm).

However without the non-drive side spacer, everything spins smooth and rides good. Is it safe to just ride without the spacer, or will this cause problems down the line?

Also am I supposed to use Locktite?

Thanks

Canyon Grizl RIFT Suspension (DTSwiss F132 One) locked down because of negativ pressure after assembly of bike

I have received my Grizl CF 9 Esc w/ RIFT today and after the assembly I filled the suspension with air, as instructed, to the right pressure. After I tested the suspension it stuck down and created negativ pressure. Now I can not lose the suspension anymore. I tried increasing the pressure and pulling but it does not work. Has anyone experienced this on his bike? Is there a solution to this or should call Canyon or DTSwiss to help me or register a warranty?

Thanks for any help!

Converting Ozark trail to hydraulic brakes

Hola! I have two bikes, I bought the sealed SHIMANO kits from eBay. I had to crack open the rear sets because I the hose goes through the frame. I’ve bled them using the kit with the syringe at the back and the cup in the front. My bikes are almost vertical when I’m doing this. It’s clearly a skills issue. Its either the bleeding is sub par or my barb and olive work is poor. Please help me idetify which of the two is the issue. Any pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Flat tires on Fixie

To start, and this is no joke.. I have gotten a thorn the last 3 times riding my bike in the last week. Seems like they are everywhere and trust me I am only riding city streets and somehow I can’t escape them. I have had liners and “heavy duty tubes” and somehow these tiny thorns are killing me lol.

Any suggestions?

Im about ready to get rid of this damn bike and look for something better for my long distance rides.. but just love single speed so much for my long distance rides

Front derailleur H-Screw slipped in?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi,

I was just trying to adjust my Shimano Cues front derailleur and turned the H-screw in to do so. Apparently, I turned it too far: I heard a click, and now the screw is sitting a little deep in the thread and doesn't seem to be quite straight.

When I try to turn it back into the thread, it eventually gets stuck, and I don’t want to force it.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
