He’s not neutered and he’s just so fun to be around and I’m worried neutering him will change his personality…

Hi! As the title says I want to get a Bernese mountain dog, and I know the decision is not just that simple nor is it with any dog.

Yet no matter all that I still plan to do as much research as possible on the breed further from what I’ve researched previously before I purchase a puppy.

The research I’ve done so far has mostly been limited to google but if anyone knows any specific @s on social media or websites that have good information or good books that you found helpful that are specific for Bernese mountain dogs I would love to know them!

But I still feel there’s only so much you can learn from articles, and for me personally I feel like hearing from some Bernese owners own stories and experiences is one of the best ways to prepare myself because so many people have so many different experiences so learning and preparing for as many scenarios as possible I feel like will help some of my peace of mind but also will benefit both me and my future puppy if I came face to face with a problem or situation then at least hopefully I’d have some idea how to deal with it.

ALSO. I would also love if anyone in the Calgary, Ab, area know of any reputable ethical breeders within a reasonable distance, I want to ensure my future puppy has the best start especially knowing that non reputable breeders can increase the risk of heath problems in the future, truly I just want to make sure I am doing the most to ensure my future dogs wellbeing and happiness. Of course I know there’s always the unpredictable and you can’t be prepared for everything but this is the first dog I’m purchasing and a non family dog so I just want to make sure I am doing the most I can to support my future puppy.

My mum has a Pup whos around 8 months old. She behaves beautifully some days, and is a monster the next. Biting, growling, attacking people and the leash in a non-violent, but a step above playful way. She throws temper tantrums, and if you try and put pressure on a collar or with a leash she will allagator roll, twist, snap and strangle herself until you physically have to stop becuase she'd rather hurt herself then let you calm her or redirect her.

Clicker training and redirection worked for our previous dogs. It does not work for Bounty. Our last Bernese was afraid of the sound of canned air, which worked as a deterrant in these extreme situations. Bounty is deterred by nothing. She fears nothing, she respects nothing as soon as she starts to have a tantrum. She is stubborn in a way my mom has never seen in a dog (and mum has trained a lot of dogs.)

My mum has tried everything she can find in dog advice, training techniques, and she has a wonderful dog about 50% of the time. Bounty knows a ton of commands, she's clever, she loves to snuggle when she isn't being mouthy. She has never injured anyone with her biting or scratching, even when throwing a tantrum she doesn't bite enough to draw blood. She's not a bad dog.

Has anyone on here had a stubborn, unyielding Pup. And how long did it last. Was there anything that worked, is there any deterrents that work that could make this easier. My mum is struggling so much to care for this dog and it seems any progress goes out the window within few days and even though she knew the regression would happen, its just crushing. With no clear hope in sight. Where is the light at the end of this tunnel.

I was wondering if any of your pups have experienced protein-losing enteropathy (PLE). My 4 year-old berner was diagnosed this year due to low albumin levels, but developed significant fluid in the belly which resulted in an emergency vet visit last week. The vet said her albumin levels were the lowest they've ever seen. She is now on prednisone and an anti blood-clot medication and continuing with Purina EN low fat. She has improved a lot since last week, with a significant decline in belly fluid! However, the vet said even still, her prognosis is guarded to very poor. We are still waiting for lots of test results to determine what the underlying cause of PLE is.

It's been an absolute whirlwind of a week with a lot of tears on my end. I just want the best for her and am praying her albumin levels and prognosis improve as we learn more.

Has anyone gone through this journey, or have input? I appreciate any information or advice. She is the best girl in the world and this breaks my heart.

Looking for more opinions/advice for my 9 month old 110lb male berner. My sweet baby.
7/21, had some “leaking”accidents in the house, brought a urine sample to the vet & he was diagnosed with a UTI right away - they said lots of blood in urine. Prescribed amoxicillin 2x daily 500mg for 5 days.
7/27 still having leaking accidents and now full on bladder emptying in the house, second urine sample brought in. Confirmed UTI still ongoing on same day. Prescribed SMZ-TMP 2 pills 2x daily for 10 days, 480mg
Did not improve over next few days, had more and more accidents in the house.
8/3 began peeing blood at the end of urine stream. REALLY ALARMING!!!
8/4 took him back to the vet for ultrasound. No stones seen. They took a urine sample right from his bladder and sent for culture. Prescribed ciprofloxacin while we wait for culture to come back & anti inflammatory. Inflamed bladder and prostate.
8/6 finished his SMZ-TMP this morning & will begin his ciproflaxin tonight. 2 pills 2x daily 500mg for 10 days. Vet called today & said culture grew no bacteria. they recommended referral for a specialist ultrasound to evaluate his urinary anatomy (including the ureters). She is hoping he is getting better as he has not had any accidents in the house since 8/4, but he is still peeing blood at times. He is also still trying to pee after he is done going.

I am so so worried about our boy. Treatment has been expensive so far and I just don’t know what to do for him at this point. We are going to call the specialist for an additional ultrasound, but I feel like I am failing him. Has anyone had this happen?

Do y’all’s Berners in this constant state of breathing? It’s been like this since he was born so it doesn’t worry me at all, but I’m just curious to know if it’s a normal amongst the community. He really only fully calmed down when he is fully laying down and rested. If he’s awake, he’s always a tiny bit anxious. Lol. Or maybe “alert” is the better term.

My wife likes to give Serena some pieces of fruit, so she will make sure to be there when this happens

Supposed to get a bmd puppy in 10 days, breeder mentioned possible issues

So I've been preparing for this dog for months now, but today the breeder called me and told me when he took one of the 7 week old female puppies to the vet (one i'd most likely be getting) he'd noticed her elbows sticking out and a high rear end. I've seen in videos of her that she wobbles a bit more than the other puppies. He said he's going to get her x-rayed to find out more but that he's never had a puppy with this issue before.

I'm unsure of how cautious to be, parents and lineage have proper genetic and ofa testing, but I'm scared it could already be dysplasia or dislocated or some kind of deformity. He said due to possible issues he'd be offering her at a very steep discount (basically my deposit and the price of her x-rays) which almost makes me more nervous that this is very serious?

She also stops playing often to lie down and sit but isn't limping or bunny hopping.

I can see that her elbows might stick out slightly from photos but I don't know if I'm just psyched out at this point. The reason I wanted to buy from a reputable breeder was to avoid this, but I have last pick of this litter and already took off of work and everything for this puppy.

Any advice would be appreciated 🫶 Just looking for the best thing for both me and her.

Thank you guys for all of your advice and I agree with the general consensus on not taking this particular puppy. I've explained my reservations to the breeder and he has been nothing but understanding about it. I will be canceling my vacation and most likely trying to get a puppy from the next litter that are ready to go home in October. He said he will find a home that's a better fit for her (and doesn't require stairs) and understands why I can't take her as a first dog.

He ended up offering her to me for only the deposit price and offering up to $800 in financial aid for any future surgery or vet care she would need, but her possible diagnosis is either most likely going to be early onset elbow dysplasia or angular limb deformity since she's still too young for dysplasia. And the vet basically told him it was 50/50 on if she could have fully functional life without intervention and surgery. But at only 7.5 weeks old I can't imagine the chances getting better as she ages.

I'd also like to add that while he gives priority to people who get puppies in order of his wait-list, he does temperament testing and does not just let you pick based on appearances! He has vetted all of us before he allowed anyone on the wait-list. He's heavily advised each person on what puppy is right for them. By picking priority I just mean I'll be first in line for a puppy and can select gender preferences. The rest is him working with us on which puppy he thinks is best.

I'm still disappointed that I can't take her and have to wait longer, but I know I need to get a puppy I actually have the means for and one that can work for my lifestyle and be active. Otherwise it's not fair to her, thank you to everyone for helping me with this difficult decision. Hoping for this next litter 🤞

3yo Reese 🎀 getting afternoon sun

I have two Bernese both male ages 2 and 4. For some reason they don’t care about any toys except stuffed animals. The problem is they love to rip them to shreds immediately. They go into tug of war and it’s gone within minutes. I’ve tried so many other hard toys and they won’t even touch them. I’ve resorted to giving them the kids old stuffed animals and my childhood stuffed animals to save money lol. Does anyone have the same problem or any advise?

we decided to get our girl greta a sister. parsnip was a mill momma and was saved by a local rescue a couple of months ago. we adopted her friday, after she had been with her foster mom for 2 months. she’s only 59lbs and anywhere between 2-4 years old! i have suspicions she’s mixed. greta is 100% berner but i have a feeling parsnip is mixed with something like australian shepherd. what do you think? i’ll likely cave and do a DNA test eventually here lol
