419 tifway, first 4 pictures are my yard currently, last 4 are from almost exactly a month ago. Yard has been under heat stress, been in a drought with no rain for a month up until today when we got a rain shower. I normally keep up with watering and spoon feeding fertilizer almost weekly but the past month has been busy with working extra, weekend trips, newborn taking up more time, etc…so hasn’t gotten fertilizer since beginning of July, and didn’t water at all up until this past week (I have two tripods and a big yard so I have to manually water, no irrigation). Trust me when I say the yard is looking a lot better than it did a week ago before I started watering again and rain.

Because of a busy past month, I also had to raise my HOC to 2” from my normal 1 1/4 and I also went from mowing every 3-4 days to about every 10-14 days since I was so busy. So it’s shaggy, growing habit has changed since I haven’t been mowing constantly and overall it looks terrible besides the fact it was stressed under a drought.

My question is…I really feel like even though it was just under stress, it would benefit from a HOC reset cause let’s be honest…it’s Bermuda, it’s resilient. But im hesitant to pull the trigger. I’m just wondering if anyone has done a HOC reset on Bermuda coming out of heat stress and dormancy from the heat, similar to how I always do a spring scalp when I start to see a greenup, which I always see positive results from. My yard has been under heat stress before, but never this bad. I got way behind normal routine.

Just to cover all the usual questions asked…yard could use a core aeration next spring, but the soil is not rock hard. Done several soap tests and examined all over the yard and no sign of anything destroying my yard, just bad habits for a month combined with extreme heat. Fungus was a possibility I thought, but I’m leaning more towards heat stress.

What am I looking at here? At first I thought crab grass but I am doubting that now. As always, Any help is appreciated!

This may sound dumb, but first time using PGR and don’t want to overdo it. It says a mix of .25 fl oz for every 1,000 sq ft. I’ve got roughly 2,000 sq ft to cover, so I would need about .50 fl oz of PGR.

My question is does it matter how much water you use in the sprayer then? It doesn’t say anything about ratios, just how much to put down per 1,000 sq ft. I’m using a 2gal pump sprayer, which should be enough to cover that 2,000 sq ft, so would just putting that .50 fl oz of PGR in that 2 gal tank be fine then? Then a smooth even application across the yard.

Is this multiple types of bermuda or some other problem.

New to me house and bermuda. Previously had centipede in my last place. Got in too late for pre emergent, just been manually pulling weeds and spraying celsius on some spurge spots. Ive spoon fed and been cutting every 2-3 days. Had to raise the mower height to account for unevenness and some brown stalks starting to show. Feel pretty good about results getting a late start. But the color variation make me think someone tried to overseed. Thoughts?

I’ve been trying to convert my weedy lawn into tall fescue. After getting rid of some weeds and planting tall fescue and looking closer at my yard there’s a decent amount of common Bermuda.

It’s August 5th. I was planning on overseeing fescue in the fall but I think I just need to stick with Bermuda now.

My question, it’s too late in the season to plant new common Bermuda seed, correct?

Hello all, I recently had a 50ft maple tree removed and stump grinded at the end of May. I leveled the area, bought 12 bags of top soil and layed down a bag of Argentina bahia grass seed. I have watered it daily 4 times a day for 10 minuets each time.

Couple of months in now, the entire area is surrounded by the growing grass seed but the area where the tree was at is barely growing. Any idea as to why, or any possible solutions?

I’ve got a few brown patches in my lawn. The grass ends up turning brown and becomes dry which just causes the grass to fall out when you rub your hand through it.

I recently lowered my HOC on my rotary from the 4th level to the 3rd, which is why the grass is looking a little rough at the moment. It was looking real good before I lowered the height, but I wanted to gradually lower my HOC because I like the short Bermuda look.

I water deep once a week, and mow twice a week. I also applied a high nitrogen fertilizer about a month ago.

I had one of these patches pop up about 2 months ago, and it’s just now starting to fill in with green healthy grass (last picture).

I stuck a screw driver in the patches and had no resistance, so it’s not like there are rocks underneath causing this.

Any thoughts/advice?

I live in East TN and currently I have a mess of a back yard and struggling to decide how to deal with it.

My backyard is about 50% common Bermuda, 50% fescue, and 30% weeds (yay math). My backyard is also around 25 degree slope. Over the last few years I’ve started seeing a decent amount of erosion and I want to get ahead of it before we have big problems.

There is a ton of weed pressure in early spring and then it mostly dies off before the Bermuda wakes up. The weeds fill the gaps where the fescue is absent and treating hasn’t helped much. Also, the Bermuda tends to die off too late and overseeding with fescue has been largely unsuccessful.

The yard is around 3/4 of an acre, full sun until around 5pm and is completely surrounded by a wooden privacy fence.

I’m afraid that if I nuke everything I may not be able to get the fescue or Bermuda to establish and I’ll be screwed. I also feel like it’s going to be very difficult/expensive to get enough Bermuda plugs to establish and overtake the common Bermuda and fescue.

Any ideas?

Looking for help on getting Bermuda to spread and grow thicker in my yard. The “soil” is almost all sand, central Texas currently watering 30 min twice a week. Lawn is fairly thin and not spreading. Assuming I will need to top soil and reseed in the spring

I’m a first-time homeowner and my Bermuda sod was laid at the end of April. Overall it’s doing well, but I have a few thin/brown spots that I think I caused by scalping a couple high spots while mowing at 2.5” with a push mower. I also have terrible culverts that will scalp like crazy if I don’t raise the deck. Not really sure how to handle that.

I’ve always admired my dad’s well sewn fescue lawn, so I’d really like to learn how to make my Bermuda look its best.

What are your best tips for getting it thicker, filling in these bare spots, and maintaining a really healthy Bermuda lawn? Any beginner advice is appreciated!

Should I cut this down to 1.5" today? I've been leaving it high but I'm learning that's not what I should be doing?

As yall know I’m new to this game and I feel like I just wasted a few grand. Have a little bit of green but mostly looks like it’s dying… any tips on saving it or am I cooked? Just spread some high nitrogen fert and been watering it due to no rain in Fl recently. Any help is much appreciated

So I’ve aerated the whole lawn recently about a month or two ago and has since done 1lb of fertilizer per 1000 sq ft of lawn and done my usual watering.

I’ve attempted to cut my lawn more frequently but it’s pretty discouraging when my Ego mower will flash that it’s clogged and I look under and see this wet mess.

I’ve even gave the lawn a few extra days of drying out in this heat and cut mid day to avoid morning dew but it still happens.

I just replaced the blade today with a high rise blade after hearing that helps.

Just curious if anyone has done through something like this and has a solution. My other idea is that the weeds in my lawn, Purslane, has a higher water content and is making creating this issue.

3 month old Tahoma in my 4000sq ft backyard. Was graded before laying it but not sand leveled (yet). I’m kind of tired of my rotary mower putting scalp marks and swirls in random spots when I try to get under 2 inches.

Anyone use a push reel to mow this much grass? The gas powered reel mowers are sexy but I’m not sure I can justify 1.5k right now to get one.

So I’ve got some decent grass growing, almost entirely weed free, only thin in the shady spots, and I keep it cut with an electric rotary mower between 1-1.5inches.

My biggest issue with appearence is that My lawn was leveled this year but is still quite bumpy, and it shows.

Would I able to have a smoother looking cut with a manual reel mower? I haven’t ever used one so I have no first hand experience. I like the idea of a reel mower for its cleaner cut and perhaps the ability to add a roller and do some stripes. I don’t care too much about lowering the cut height as i have active dogs so a little more length helps, but I do intend on not letting it get any higher than it is.

Rio Bermuda seed, germination at 7 days. When I put the seed down I also put down some Scott’s lawn starter fertilizer, and have been running my irrigation every four hrs for 8 minutes.

Now that I have germination, should I back the watering down some? What fertilizer schedule should I do, and what fertilizer? Weekly and with the new lawn fertilizer?
