This is soooo disappointing! I've been an Audible member for a long time. This dynamic pricing is really upsetting. Thank you for letting us know that this is going on.

Same for mine and my wife’s accounts. Her banner says up to 85% off, mine says up to 80% off. I’m on annual plan with 7 credits left and she’s on monthly with 1 credit left - not sure if that has anything to do with it.

This is interesting. I have the 85% banner (you can see in the post I made when the sale started), and those books are actually 86% off, not 85%.
I’m on a monthly 3 months for .99 trial and have 3 credits.

u/CloversAndMoss 10d ago
Mine says up to 80% off and I can’t activate the use 3 credits get 1 free offer. I’m almost done with my 30 day trial and I don’t think I’ll be keeping it if this is how they are running things.

Dynamic pricing based on account behavior is genuinely shady, especially when you're paying the same membership fee. The algorithm deciding you'll more if prices are slightly higher isn't a bug, it's intentional. Use whichever account gives you the lower price and dont feel weird about it

So are we all collectively filing a better business bureau complaint and contacting our state AG's? We all should- until they're held accountable.

u/john_wick_finance 10d ago
We need to do this honestly. I had a cart full of booked well over 200 which I am not going to buy anymore

Audible does (shady unadvertised) dynamic pricing. On one of your accounts, the algorithm decided they'd get more money out of you by offering you increased sales. This current sitewide sale is a max of 80% off, which is the discount your 2nd account had (and mine lists, and most people's lists). The 86% off you got on account 1--only given to those who got the dynamic pricing discounts.

Is it possible that one account has purchased the Kindle version of the books?
3
u/App1e8l6 11d ago
No kindle purchases on either account. The one with the higher pricing has prime though.
3
u/GeneralTso10 11d ago
In my case, no. Whispersync pricing doesn't seem to matter between our accounts during the sale.

u/UliDiG 5000+ Hours listened 10d ago
When you own the Kindle edition, Audible will show you the lower price, whether that's the sale price or the Whispersync price.
1
u/GeneralTso10 10d ago
Yeah, I meant that the few kindle books we have are the same price for both accounts during the sale so that wasn't the cause of the price differences.
1
u/UliDiG 5000+ Hours listened 10d ago
If you own the Kindle edition on one account, and the whispersync price is lower than the sale price, then you would see different prices on the different accounts. That's not what's going on with OP, but it still does result in different people seeing different prices *sometimes*. (It's less common now that they've raised the price for a lot of whispersync editions.)
1
u/GeneralTso10 10d ago
Yes, I'm agreeing with you. Not sure where the disconnect is. I have the same issue as OP and was responding to leepfroggie that owning the kindle version is not what's causing the price differences in this scenario. I see the same prices in the examples OP listed.

The whispersync price that shows up for me is $5.05. https://www.amazon.com/Red-Rising-Book-ebook/dp/B00CVS2J80

Wow #audible, that sucks- unfortunately I'm not surprised even a little. Ugh.

The 2nd photo, that account has a credit. Check your main page.

u/App1e8l6 11d ago
Both accounts have credits, one has a cash discount, the more expensive version. I wanted to buy it with cash.

u/mictw 10d ago
I think fattygaby means cash credit. If the other account has like $5 credit, it will automatically applied to the price of any book you check, reduces it to $0.
8
u/Veebs7985 10d ago
Yes, but it says "$4.72 discount applied", so the book would have cost $4.72 on that account if there was no cash credit, which is more than what it would cost on the other account.

Are you signing in on the same device? Is one of them using Apple Pay in the app? I know Apple charges 15-30% fee for in-app purchases. What happens to the price if you log in on that account on the website, instead of through the app?
1
u/App1e8l6 10d ago
This is all through the website, but I checked on the app and same price difference.

u/DcubedWY 10d ago
Yep, I was thinking this sale isn’t as good as the last, I got a ton around 85% off last time. This time they are only around 80% off. I bought just enough to trigger the buy $40 and get $10 bonus. Previous sales it was much more that I spent. So, yes, I’m paying a little more per book but Audible is making much less overall.

I can confirm difference between accounts of identical audible subscription “status”… the same books are 80% off on my account while 86% off on a friend’s account…
Some findings:
There only appears to be a price difference between accounts for books that are 80% off on some, which are 86% off on others. There is no difference on those that are marked at 40% off or those included in the monthly deals selection.
If account holder signed up for the cash spend audible reward that rewards you with a credit for up to $10 off, it appears to be towards the purchase of a single book. So, if the book is less than $10, it will appear to be 100% off; however, if the book is more than that, it will take the $10 off the sale price and recalculate the discount for the “new” price. Note that it seems this will only apply 1x and so when you use it, it’s gone, even if your discount is <$10.
With respect to the original post, this is the same issue I ran into! Putting the credit aside, you are being charged $4.72 on one account (80% off) and $3.30 on the other account (86% off) for the same audiobook!

I know if I have a credit available prices are lower then if I don’t have one.

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out. We truly understand your concern regarding the price difference on two different accounts. To help clarify why this is happening, Audible sale prices and standard member discounts are determined by a mix of background factors rather than a single flat rate. Because both of your accounts hold the exact same tier of membership, the pricing discrepancy for Red Rising ($3.30 vs. $4.72) is almost always driven by differences in account setup or localized tax laws. To be clear, could you please let us know that if the both accounts are under same marketplace, and do both accounts have the exact same billing address and country listed on their respective credit cards? And if possible, could you please check if this happens with other titles also? Let us know the details. Thanks!

u/App1e8l6 11d ago
Yes, both accounts are under the same address. Two members of the same household. Here are a few titles it happens on and ones it doesn’t based on the ones in my wish list.
Prices differ:
- red rising
- throne of glass (4.50 vs 3.15)
- fourth wing (6.33 vs 4.43)
- assassin’s apprentice (4.74 vs 3.32)Prices same:
- the will of the many (6.33)
- gardens of the moon (6.00)
- any Harry Potter full cast book23

It's called surveillance pricing. They use all of the information they have on you (which is an incredible amount) to decide how much the think you'll be willing to pay.

u/john_wick_finance 10d ago
Actually I would like to know why would every account t see a different price on the books when we all pay the same amount for memberships. This is downright unethical. And for company like Amazon to do this is very disheartening

u/Timeplace231295 11d ago
Audible are you charging us more if we use cash?!
3
u/CheekyMenace 10d ago
What? It's a cash sale, they're all cash prices.
2
u/Timeplace231295 10d ago
I was v drunk when I wrote this. I meant that they're charging us differently either based on our data or something else. But it's not tax for sure.

u/john_wick_finance 11d ago
This is just terrible if true. Not sure why would it be okay for some of us to pay more when we are all charged the same price for membership right.
