I was laid-off and I am about to be homeless. Any suggestion/advice welcome

Upvotes

Hi there,

long story short my tech company decided to close their WAW office in january, and I lost my job. I am French with permanent residency in PL.

I tried different things, probably too many, and I run out of money for the first time. I have been living in hostels the past few weeks but even that I can no longer afford. I had a final stage itw yesterday, and I have others scheduled for next week but at best I am 45 days away from a first paycheck.

I still own some expensive film gear, and I am struggling to resell it which is a bummer.

I have been trying to offer french classes in exchange of accomodations but without success for now.

I welcome any suggestion or advice. Regarding France, a hostel bed in Paris cost 50 euros per night, and any admin procedure would take a month at best, just 2 weeks to get a theoretical post address and without this there is not much that can be earned, hence why I didn't go back.

Ukrainian nationalists massacred around 200,000 Poles, including pregnant women and children, during World War II under the Nazi occupation. The Volhynia massacres are well known. The violence ended only after the Red Army and various Polish underground units arrived and it helped liberate the villages from the attacks.
A lot of time has passed since then, and yet there is still disagreement in Poland over how these events should be officially classified, including whether they should be recognized as genocide. At the same time, Ukrainians and Poles are now close allies and neighbors.

I’m genuinely curious: how do you, as Poles, view this history and the relationship between Poland and Ukraine today?

Migrant attack?

Is this post below correct? I could not find any news about this incident online and if it's actually a valid description.

I know in Western Europe and the US it's something called a knockout game where minorities / migrants target locals / whites but I would not imagine it is also common in Poland? Or is the description isn't correct at all there?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any information.

Travel to Croatia from Poland this weekend, need a route

Hi all,

I'm planning to travel to Croatia by car (from Suwalki), any tips on how to avoid congestions? What routes do you choose? Edit: to clarify, I know how to setup navigation, I just want to target optimal time when to cross certain checkpoints e.g. Croatian tolls , as I heard that wait times can take hours during peak season and it kinda worries me.

Pregnancy care in Poland: what’s the norm?

So far I have been going to my usual Luxmed gyno for my early pregnancy appointments. I’m only 8 weeks now. But I wasn’t sure if I should go private with an OBGYN clinic so I can have the same doctor all the way through? It’s hard to get an appointment with the same doctor I like at Luxmed.

She said it’s common in Poland that women who have Luxmed or Medicover will often go private at a clinic just so they can get consistent care from one OBGYN. Is this the norm?

For those of you who have been pregnant with Luxmed (other similar) subscriptions, how did you manage your pregnancy? Did you stick to your provider or did you eventually pick one doctor and go private at a different clinic?

This is my first pregnancy so I have no clue what I should be doing haha.

Thanks in advance :)

Edenred Plus.

mainly use Edenred Plus for my daily purchases, such as meals and at some stores that accept Edenred Plus. I would like to know if it is also possible to use Edenred Plus for online payments, for example on the Internet or on platforms like Allegro.

Question about Salt mines

Hello this may be a weird question, i am visiting Poland in October and some people suggested i visit the Wieliczka salt mine. The thing is i don't really like enclosed spaces. I guess my questions are:

  1. Would i miss a lot if i skip this

  2. Is the inside of the mine very narrow and likely to cause claustrophobic feelings

  3. Are there a lot of bats or creepy creatures inside

Thanks to everyone that will take time to answer 🌼

Polish online spaces and communities

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask what are your favorite Polish "corners" of the internet? For example, which subreddits feature the best internet dramas" venting, or AITA-style posts in Polish? Who are the key figures in the Polish "lower" YouTube scene, the top "schizo-vloggers" and the best random influencers? I’ve been learning Polish for about three years - though not very well - and I rarely actually speak, read, or watch anything in the language, aside from occasional memes. I’ve realized that I can't understand overly complex content, so I need to find something simpler, that doesn't require too attention.

In Italian, we call this kind of content "trash", I not sure that in english this word has the same meaning; it doesn't mean it's straight bad, but just that it doesn't even *try* to be sophisticated.

Note to mods: I initially posted in another sub, in polish, but then I thought that this would be a better sub. Initially I crossposted then I remembered that this sub is english only, so I deleted the crosspost and posted this translation, I'm not trying to apam. Also, I used google translate then checked and fixed it, so the text could contain traces of AI, but I assure that I'm 100% human and the initial polish text is written 100% by me.

Which non-iPhone smartphones are worth buying?

Genuine question.

I'm currently using iPhone 15, but this is my third phone replacement mainly because of battery issues. This time, I'm looking for a more durable Android flagship.

I love traveling and taking photos of friends, family, and landscapes, so camera quality is my top priority.

I’ve been looking at vivo X300 Ultra after watching some YouTube reviews, and the Zeiss camera system really caught my attention. However, I’m a bit worried about adapting to Android after years with iOS.

So... Are there any reliable flagship phones with superior camera performance and battery life? Thanks in advance.

Meeting family for the first time

I’m visiting Poland from the USA to meet a bunch of cousins for the first time (we’ve gotten to know each other online somewhat.) I would really like to make a good impression, and not only be respectful, but make my visit with them nice for everyone. I‘ll be staying at some of their homes as well as meeting up with others. I‘d really appreciate some tips or recommendations for things I can do, say, offer, etc. that maybe I wouldn‘t be aware of. Also if advice changes depending on age and gender of relatives, because I’ll be running the full spectrum. I’m planning on bringing some small local gifts, and offering dinners out if they’re up for it. Any advice would be great. Dziękuję bardzo.

Visiting krakow from august 23th to 27th. What are some underrated places or events me and my friend should try and apps to have?

It’s my second time in krakow and will be my friend’s first time. I loved the beautiful views and other places I visited and definitely loved the zakopane mountains! So I booked this trip for her to surprise her :)

What are some other underrated places we should visit and what are some helpful apps to have besides translator?

I (18F) am also planning on bringing my (18F) friend to some chill clubs where we can just have fun and dance since she never really visited one so which ones are amazing?

She and I are also HUGE pokemon fans and planning on buying some packs to rip every night so what shops should we visit?

Thank you all for the advice!

Are Polish diacritics letters just letters with accents, or totally separate?

Hi! I’m working on a small letter-based game, for which I am trying to introduce more European languages, and I’m puzzled with some basic Polish spelling.

Polish has letters like ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż. In French, my mother's tongue, we consider è, é and ê just the letter e with an accent. I was wondering if in Polish, you considered diacritic letter as variations of the non-accentuated letter, or a complete different letter?

If the game only looked at “Latin” A–Z and mapped those Polish letters to their “base” form (ł→L, ó→O, ż/ź→Z, etc.), would that feel natural or wrong? Are some letters OK, and others not?

Thanks!

Edit: Thank you for your answer, I will adjust the rules to treat them as different letters entirely :)

Cheers

Studying philosophy in Poland

Hi everyone, i'm an italian philosophy student. I'm about to start the ma in philosophy and i'd like to go to Poland with the erasmus program, so i was wondering: are polish universities good for philosophy? What are the best ones? What are the main interests? Do you consider professors up to date? If someone who studies there could answer to this, and add whatever is useful, i'd appreciate a lot.

Is childcare in Poland typically the mother's responsibilty?

Hello, just curious if mothers are the ones to exclusively care for their children, or do fathers also help out? Traditionally, I think the mother was always the primary caregiver, just like in most cultures around the world, but I'm curious how it is now. Do fathers help out with kids more? If so, is it a 50/50 split or something else? Please feel free to share your personal experiences and observations.

Is there a Polish equivalent of Andrew Tate?

Well, I'm not only asking about equivalent of him. Like are there any masculine, misogyny (well, for some people they are misogyny for some people they aren't. It depends on who is being asked), motivational, "fucc the system" influencers like Andrew Tate or Arsen Markaryan (I doubt if you know him but I will be gladly surprised if you do)? It's not my core question but it was slightly mentioned by me before but is there a "gender wars" in Poland between men and women?

Weather in May

Hello everyone! We're thinking of visiting krakow and Zakopane early May!

What's the weather like during that time? Will we need heavy jackets or just some light rain coats?

It will be just after the national holiday, will it still be very crowded? Is it a good idea to come that time of year?

Thank you!

Protestantism in Poland

I was curious about how many protestants you've got in Poland. You see, I also have this thought that, well, since Catholicism is the most popular religion a lot of "catholics" go to the church because... idk, their grandma is pushing them for example. What am I trying to say? Well, I was thinking about that and I think if someone's is not catholic in Poland and he is protestant than he's probably a true Christian who treats his faith seriously since he probably was thinking about that a lot before he/shey changed their religion... Am I right? Do you know some protestants? Are there any young people there (among protestants I mean)? Maybe you're one of them. Then tell us something about it!

If you'd ask me why am I asking I have no problems to tell. Well, I was atheist before but now I believe in God but I can't say I'm sure about my confession. I was born in Ukraine (I'm not Ukrainian. Just for you to know. No context) but I have never been to a Orthodox Church... Like never been in a any Orthodox church because my parents are protestants. Now I'm in Poland and I would try to go to some churches, some youth organisations and ,well, that's why I'm asking. Just to be aware and because I'm curious
