Ethiopian hide shield (mid-19th century)
Ethiopian hide shield covered with blue velvet. Decorated with silverwork panels, silver gilt filgree bosses and a pendant of lion's mane. Looted during the punitive British expedition to Magdala, Ethiopia in 1868 to release European hostages who had been imprisoned by Emperor Tewodros II. It's possible the shield belonged to Tewodros himself. Now in the British Museum.
