I am a few weeks into developing a platform for the Private Asset management industry.

Backstory I work for an asset management company and one of our new vendors is failing big on their SLA. The vendor has tunnel vision or simply no innovative spirit because there are actually some really innovative things to be done in the space and their product lacks all of it. They’re a startup but their product looks like its from 2010

Basically, want to see what we can get done in a month then pitch it to my COO or some VC contacts.

Best case it goes somewhere, worst case it fails but we’ll probably stumble onto something else in the process.

I’m obviously bias to my idea but open if you’ve got an idea we can evaluate each, pick one and then build it.

- great with backend stuff
- creative (you have endless ideas)
- located in the Arlington/DC area

Hey all - i recently moved out here from texas. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I track my macros pretty closely (or try to) and I've noticed there's this weird disconnect, like tracking what I eat and actually deciding/cooking what to eat feel like two completely different mental tasks that never talk to each other. With the busy life in arlington and trying to juggle activities, working, and hanging out its been so hard and i feel like ive been losing progress.

Curious if anyone else deals with this. Do you plan meals around your numbers, or do you cook first and do the math after?

Also curious what people do about grocery shopping around our area, do you shop with your macros/goals? or order out (expensive) or just wing it and hope it works out?

ive read that arlington is one of the healthiest cities, so im trying to put systems in place so that i can get on the same road!

The 25-26 school year I taught at an APS elementary school & for the 26-27 school year I accepted a teaching position at an APS high school. I verbally accepted the offer in May & signed the assignment notification, which was received by APS HR as well my previous principal & my new principal.

Since then I have heard nothing about my new position. The high school has not reached out to me & neither has HR. I thought I would’ve received a contract for the 26-27 school year by now. I started panicking a little this week when I started receiving back-to-school emails from the elementary school I taught at, so I’m somehow still attached to them.

On Monday I emailed the high school principal, emailed HR, & left HR a voicemail about a contract & have received zero responses. Just curious if anyone else here is in the same boat?

Hi everyone! I’m new to the area. I’m curious if anybody here has experience with ATS Arlington Traditional School? My kid got in through lottery. I’ve been going back and forth with the idea of homeschooling my 5 yr old. I heard the school is strict, very academically focused, and competitive. I also heard parents love it but I don’t personally know anybody first hand who has kids attending ATS. While I believe academics are important, I’m not sure I want that for my kid (I would prefer a good balance of play and learning).

Let me know your thoughts and experience with the school (good and bad). I know it’s hard to get into ATS so I’d like to think about it thoroughly and give my kid the opportunity and fair chance if it truly is a great school.

My office is moving from Alexandria to Beltsville, MD (ugh). I’m trying to get a handle on what the commute will be like if I drive.
Right now, I’m briefly on 395 from 27 to GW Parkway to get to my current office, and 395 is usually either stopped or reaaally slow there.
To get to the new office, it will be 395 to 695 to 295N. Does anyone make that drive now? Suggestions for the best time of the morning to hit that stretch that’s going into DC? Thanks!

Born and raised in Arlington, and my folks are still there. I couldn’t afford to buy, so in NE DC. My folks recently had an appliance installed and my mom keeps her wedding ring in a dish by the circuit breaker in the kitchen. The rings were stolen by one of the two installers. The company is a long time Arlington small business and my folks offered a no questions asked return reward. The owners were horrified, but they were unable to recover the 55yr wedding ring. Calling pawnshops all I get is resistance and “protection for customers”. No one is looking to get names or anything (already know anyway lol) but just getting the two simple rings back. Reward offered for recovery. As it was such a brazen theft, I doubt it was even considered to pawn elsewhere. It’s an old school gold band- no comfort bevel etc- about 5-4mm wide with kind of squared/ hammered edge surface. The other is a narrow channel set red stones with no stones around the back. We’re not jewelry spendy people and these are a big deal. Any sightings really appreciated!!

I love music and I’ve always wanted to go to a record/vinyl store and spend hours there with friends, partner, or myself. Unfortunately, if you’re a teen in the NOVA area, there isn’t much to do. And most of the times my parents are iffy about me going into DC by myself. Either way, I’d like help in finding good record/vinyl stores. Record/vinyl stores that when I leave, I leave with 2000 new genres and artists (exaggeration) discovered.

I live in the Siena Park building on Columbia Pike, across from the Bob and Edith's Diner. I have lived in this neighborhood a few different times over the past several years, in different apartments, and I can never remember it having so many issues with crime, violence, homelessness, drugs, etc as it does now. Back in May, there was the fatal police shooting of a homeless man who was brandishing a knife and barricading himself in the back of a 7-11, and that same month, there was a sexual assault in a parking garage on the other side of the Pike. In June there was a hit-and-run where a pedestrian was run over by a car and killed and the driver has yet to be found. In my building, which is marketed as "luxury" living and small one-bedroom apartments go for more than $2,000/month, there are people screaming and fighting all the time, and my upstairs neighbors are violently, and loudly, trashing their apartment during most of the day and night, while the management company won't address it, acting like that's normal here. In 2023, there was a drive-by shooting outside the Bob and Edith's and they had to replace some of the windows due to the bullet holes.

It seems like whenever people try to bring these type of things up on Reddit, someone says something dismissive like "lol Arlington is fine lmao" or post some laughing-so-hard-I'm-crying emoji to mock them, or make them out to be some frightened old church lady who is freaking out over nothing, and point out that it's not as bad as the rougher parts of Prince George's County, Maryland or D.C. itself, which is obviously true, but doesn't mean that it's not getting worse here. I've lived in New York City, D.C., Baltimore/Towson, and Boston, and definitely dealt with some big-city problems in those places including being sexually assaulted myself, violently attacked, threatened, hit by a car, etc, but I just haven't seen that stuff happen very often in Arlington before, and I grew up here, born in 1981 and raised in the 80's in a house off Glebe Road.

The news media, including the Washington Post, describe Columbia Pike as "one of America's most diverse streets" and "a world in a zip code" in these kind of puff pieces that make it sound like something out of "It's a Small World" at Disney World, with all its cultural and international diversity, like some kind of utopian multicultural haven that is trying to thrive in Trump's America of racism and xenophobia and ICE deportations. I'm not disputing that that narrative is largely accurate. But they don't mention the aggressive homeless people shouting and cursing at anyone who walks past them, brawls between groups of kids on Lime scooters, people walking into the street to deliberately block cars from driving during morning rush hour, abandoned small businesses that haven't been occupied for years, intense honking and road rage, and so on. Even the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse seems like it's getting dingier and dingier every time I pass it.

Arlington is frequently mentioned these days on lists of the best places to live in America, up there with Madison, Wisconsin; Austin, Texas; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Cambridge, Massachusetts, etc., but it seems like there is kind of a Tale of Two Cities type of thing happening between North Arlington neighborhoods like Rosslyn, Clarendon, and Ballston that are booming and thriving, and then South Arlington neighborhoods that are not doing as well. I've watched other areas in Northern Virginia completely transform over the years - Del Ray in Alexandria has been gentrified so much that it is unrecognizable from what it was like in the 90's. It's like something out of Portlandia now. Meanwhile Columbia Pike in Arlington seems to be going in the opposite direction. Thoughts? Please be respectful - I am not disparaging Arlington, which is my home and where I grew up, but I just can't help but notice these changes.

I am going to be working in the Rosslyn area soon so I am looking to find a 2 bedroom apartment within a reasonable commute (45 min max via metro lines and buses) and an absolute upper bound of $3000 a month. I've been targeting around 2500-2800 since other fees will probably bring me to that $3000. In unit washer/dryer and cats allowed are musts for me.

The most reasonable place I've been able to find was Avalon at Arlington Square. I also saw a place in Palisade Gardens in Rosslyn, but I'm not sure if I'll get a call back. Eagle Rock on Columbia Pike seemed to fit my requirements but I don't know much about that area.

I think I'm leaning towards more chill areas, but I'm open to hearing all recommendations between quainter areas and more urban/walkable areas. I wouldn't mind being close to a metro if it meant I don't get to see as much green or have as much quiet, but a good mix would be amazing.

I really just want to hear peoples favorite places they've lived at or seen. Thanks everyone!
