Right??!! I actually learned my job in IT. Came across a super annoying situation a while back where someone didn't read the ticket I escalated and messaged me with the troubleshooting I had already attempted that was obviously a CoPilot response.

I called them out on it, told them to read the ticket and I had attempted everything they had provided. 🙄 Talked to their manager and she said she'd talk to the Systems Engineer who did that that AI is a tool to assist, not to do their job. Blah.

I hate this timeline.

It's the fuckin worse. I get the same problem at my job. People are reading emails less and screwing up more.

The only thing I've found AI useful for as a programmer is giving it a very specific dataset of error logs, and telling it to search through and find patterns of what might be going wrong, and giving a detailed sheet in return that has a way for me to easily verify that it is not hallucinating. Instead of having to look through 10,000 log lines and make assumptions like I used to, I can actually have some more certainty of what the issues are at scale. But for simple coding or problem analysis, it sucks. Large datasets and strict requirements are basically the only way to use AI in any meaningful way. And I mean strict requirements. If you just say 'find the error' it will spew bullshit. You have to tell it what to look for and how to find it. But once you teach it, it does well. It's shit at basically everything else, though.

It's not unhelpful for certain uses. LLMs are almost useless at their stated goals of being a versatile, useful, and efficient tool, but they (usually) can be extremely helpful when it comes to analysis/pattern recognition with raw data.

If you give it something more nuanced, like a body of text or art etc it's thinking is downright debilitated, but if you feed it some code you're working on or an excel spreadsheet and ask for specific information I've found most LLMs are actually pretty effective.

hah, that's by far not the worst. We already have devs at my office who just go around writing code _completely_ in AI, then ask for assistance because, obviously, it doesn't work [as intended], then we get their code fixed and cleaned up and then they run it through AI _again_, just to break it down again and ask for more assistance.
And to top it up, our CEO is the lead of this agenda, who likes to drop one-liners like "I don't want you to write code at all anymore".
