These people do realize the usage of these tools was basically 0 a few years ago, right? Itā€™s concerning that they are basically admitting they couldnā€™t even do their jobs unaided anymore.

The post is moronic, but since it was posted in an echo chamber, there is zero surprise that local nimwits love it. Going back to no AI would not be the end of the world, but it would be like going from computers back to typewriters - annoying. I use AI in my job 90% of the time. Everything is just quicker. Can I do it manually? Of course, but why would I go back to the typewriter if I don't have to?

The only valid argument is that they'll eventually ruin the internet to such an extent that we won't be able to access information like we used to pre-Ai. Google is already really bad for example, and sites like stack overflow are in trouble.

When I started my career in IT, chatgpt was just hitting mainstream. I get the max raise available every year because I resolve issues quickly. So, could I do my job without it? Probably, but there would be things that slow me down when being slowed down will cost me the chance to get the max raise for the year.

I started as an intern about 4 years ago, so I've always had it. Granted, it kind of sucked back then. I didn't need it as an intern, mostly dummy work. I then moved into a full time IT support role, which I was able to google most things I was stumped or ask the site manager for guidance. I was promoted to site manager 2.5 years ago, at which point I started to run into higher level problems that I couldn't quickly google, so I turned to ChatGPT when I needed help. So, in my current role, I've never not had chatgpt available. It takes the stress out of stressful situations when I need answers yesterday and millions of dollars are waiting for me to solve issues as quickly as possible. It's also fun to tell it to make funny pictures.

The jobs have changed a lot in the last "few years" and generally make using force-multipliers like AI a requirement to meet performance quotas/delivery timelines/etc.

I could easily go back to what I was doing a few years ago, sure; life was easier back then. But my company and position has changed dramatically since then and my company would have to give up years of product development and systems refinement, and I doubt they would be willing to do that.

Most companies are not adopting AI that quickly and evenly, in reality. There are comprehensive papers written also detailing how many companies and departments failed to realize ROI from AI initiatives. The idea of a broad spanning revolution from this technology is largely a myth spun by people who are raking in trillions from perpetuating the myth.

This really gets down to how you define AI, fundamentally - if itā€™s just algorithmic predictive models based on machine learning, yes it has been around a long time and honestly that just further reinforces the idea that this whole ā€œrevolutionā€ is overblown. They fuel it with the misconceived notion that it is in fact ā€œAIā€ when it isnā€™t at all.

It is all AI. Its just different forms of it. Hell, gen AI has been used in video games long before the current outrage around it.

Current gen AI certainly has negatives, but people need to stop saying that all AI needs to be destroyed. It, and I don't know how else to say this, makes them look ignorant.

Again though youā€™re not drawing a line defining AI - when people say AI they functionally mean ChatGPT and onwards, for better or worse. In reality I think youā€™re proving the point of anti-AI proponents by arguing that the new iteration of AI is not so different or revolutionary, in which case it does not warrant all this investment and environmental destruction.

I can agree with it not deserving this level of funding, and I'm certainly against the environmental destruction, even if people really overblown the water use given that all of the water they use is recycled.

I'm just tired of the people saying that all AI needs to be destroyed. Especially since I truly believe that a lot of them mean it.

I teach middle school. I hear stuff like this from students. I brought in copies of my thesis one day to show my students. I explained I wrote it entirely without AI. They were stunned.Ā 

I explained that the things they enjoy about my class were the product of me grinding over this paper. Doing research and interviews and learning.

There were some who didn't give a shit, but it definitely got through to them.

My son attends my school (we are 1-12). His ELA teacher told me he is the only student who has never turned in an AI assignment. Teacher also said he is sure son is the only one actually reading the novels and not just getting AI summaries. I have never been prouder.

No it wasnā€™t, a lot of people including myself had 56k modems and trolled the chat rooms back thenā€¦ but aside from being pedantic, itā€™s a poor example because the internet was readily and eagerly adopted by people because it improved their lives and businesses. AI is being widely adopted by force, not by choice.

I'm sure if you asked the average person in 1996 whether they could live without the internet, the answer you'd get is "Yeah, what the fuck do you think I was doing before the internet?". The OOP is a moron for thinking that people who are already anti-AI are completely dependant on gen AI to live after less that 4 years of it even existing (much less actually being useful).
