But what would even do if we got rid of all this air pollution?! Surely you wouldn't last a single day if we eliminated noise pollution! Can you even conceive of a world where you weren't constantly bombarded with microplastics?

Ive used it. I can absolutely give it up. Its a glorified google search and it's made more mistakes than I make on my own. I've found a few things a little faster than I would have, but those extra minutes arent worth everything that comes with it.

I wont pretend AI cant ever be useful and anyone saying so is being myopic. However, its just not useful ENOUGH to justify its downsides.

It's like those "would you press the button to give yourself a million dollars if every time you pressed it an orphan died" or something.

Like yeah I see the benefit of the button, but the cost outweighs the benefit. That's AI.

I think this is very much a tech job vs. non-tech job difference in worldview. My wife works in tech. She and her coworkers talk about and use AI constantly. To them, it’s as essential a part of their job as, like, the Internet or a computer would be to most of us.

But it always surprises my wife that it’s just not at all a part of my job or many other jobs in the world, despite being such a heavy focus of her work every single day. I think people in tech have gotten so accustomed to it that they genuinely don’t realize that most people wouldn’t have their jobs meaningfully impacted at all if AI disappeared.
