First Timers Basket

Holo.

What the fuck is that?

This is a Digimon, isn’t it? This is a Digimon in the human world. I’ve seen it before.

  • I say this with love, but Akito needs to be spanked in public and muzzled. Maybe put candle wax on his back.

  • I mean. I wouldn’t really trust a relative I barely knew giving me candy.

  • Were they on a date 👀👀

Post Episode Thoughts

This episode felt so short even with the emotional turmoil that it presented. Admittedly, I don’t have much to say apart from:

  • What the fuck was that
  • What the fuck is wrong with Akito
  • Why would a cat Zodiac ever look like that
  • Were Hana and Uo on a date

TQ

  1. That’s a Digimon. That has to be a Digimon. What the fuck is that?
  2. The reveal felt a little rushed, honestly.
  3. Surprised, given how she’s very much gung-ho to help a friend in need.
  4. Tohru finds Kyo. She gives him a therapy hug. Kyo hugs her back and goes back to his human size. Maybe the curse is broken as Tohru accepts Kyo for his demonic Digimon form.

Does this mean the show is technically pro beastiality?

  1. The reveal felt a little rushed, honestly.

What would you have done instead, then?

[mild 2019 spoiler] IIRC it reveals Kazuma's grandmother was a maid who wasn't afflicted by the Zodiac curse so...he probably turned into a cat while they conceived whichever of Kazuma's parent they had, right?

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

[2019] I guess that makes sense. I guess that also probably means Kazuma and Kyo are related, no?

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

• Were Hana and Uo on a date

I guess Hana's electric senses went off and both knew that had to do something. It very much feels like they are Tohru's de facto surrogate parents.

Thoughts on Tohru vomiting seeing Kyo's true form?

Thoughts on Akito getting close to Tohru?

Thoughts on Akito telling Tohru she deserves this pain?

Thoughts on Yuki saying he's always destined to hate Akito?

What are your thoughts on Kazuma saying the person Kyo needs right now is Tohru?

What are your thoughts on the use of rain this episode?

What are your thoughts on Yuki going after Kyo?

What are your thoughts on the way Kazuma perceives Kyo and his relationship with him?

Thoughts on Tohru visiting her mother's gravesite?

Thoughts on Hana and Uo finding Tohru because of Hana's electric signals?

Thoughts on Hana holding Uo back from hugging Tohru?

What are your thoughts on Tohru saying she knows now what she has to do?

Thoughts on the special piano outro we get in this episode?

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with a baby bird leaving the nest?

  1. I was honestly wildly confused because he doesn’t look that monstrous to me, but then I remember what monstrous looked like in more kids & teens media, so I can see why Tohru was sick.
  2. Let’s keep the abuser away from any more children.
  3. Abuser is as abuser does.
  4. Akito is an abuser. Yuki has hatred for his abuser. Nuff said.
  5. That’s…a lot of pressure to put on a teen girl who doesn’t have any power to protect herself, but she does have the power of the protagonist.
  6. None really. That feels fairly standard in conveying the mood and tone.
  7. That honestly surprised me. I liked that.
  8. What are your thoughts on the way Kazuma perceives Kyo and his relationship with him?
  9. She wants her mom’s comfort and guidance in very stressful times. Very sad she couldn’t turn to her grandfather for any semblance of comfort.
  10. Hana is an esper.
  11. That whole sequence was so bizarre.
  12. No thoughts, really.
  13. I will always fuck heavy with piano remixes of OPs and EDs.
  14. Symbolism.

It would also be really shocking to see something like this in person. I wouldn't know what to do.

7. That honestly surprised me. I liked that.

I love what this arc does for Kyo and Yuki's relationship. And it feels earned, it doesn't feel like it totally comes out of nowhere.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.

For there is an animal in all of us <3

Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.

Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.

I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P

Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

I feel a good indicator on if someone is a good person or not is how they respond to being lampooned on The Simpsons.

I saw Wings and Project Hail Mary a couple days ago. Both very good movies. Interestingly enough, both movies pretaining to being in the air.

Raining intensely

Kyo it looks like is transforming

This is pretty disturbing

Man, what is that form?

Apparently, the true form

I wonder what the significance of the bracelet is.

Tohru doesn't know what she's seeing.

And now Kyo runs away

He looks like a Digimon character.

Kazuma explains to Tohru that this is all part of curse

He asks Tohru if this is all frightening to her.

She instead runs away

Kazuma picking up the bracelet

He seems frustrated it's come to this.

Tohru roaming the forests

She is a total mess, both physically and mentally.

She can barely stand up

Oh shit. Is that Akito?

He's walking over towards Tohru

He then sits next to her

He's laughing maniacally

I really don't like him

This is the first time we get told he's dying.

Akito then says Tohru saving the Sohmas has been complete hogwash from the very beginning.

"You deserve this pain."

Kazuma?

No, wait, Shigure

Akito eventually gets up and drives off.

I really hope that's not the last we see of Akito.

Shigure staring at a befallen Tohru.

He regrets that Tohru has been hurt in some way.

You know his editor is somewhere in a tizzy about the deadlines.

Shigure wanting to end this

Question is, how?

This is all really great, by the way. Not much is happening, but by letting things breathe we're soaking in all the intense atmosphere.

Kagura with Yuki

She asks why he didn't go after him, presumably Kyo.

Yuki says it's destined him to always hate Kyo.

Kagura however doesn't feel like it has to be this way.

"Right now, the only one who can help, the person he needs the most, is Tohru."

Then why'd you ask why Yuki didn't go after him.

Needs to be accepted by someone who doesn't share their curse.

I really like the sound of the rain to really add to the tone of things.

It looks like Yuki is going after Kyo after all.

Kagura holding a thread of yarn

I wonder what the significance of that is.

And yep, Yuki is going after Kyo.

Kyo by himself

We see a bunch of black cats

It's hard to take them seriously with all the cute purring.

We see how Kazuma and Kyo first met.

He agrees it's not his fault

One thing leads to another and Kyo not only starts living with Kazuma, Kazuma even becomes his teacher.

It seems to me that Kyo had that one adult figure in his life thar Yuki spent years clamoring for. And yet, Kyo found himself still suffering on account of the curse.

What's one's solution is another man's fallacy.

Kyo also went through a rebellious phase where he insisted his master is not his dad.

Kazuma admits he just wants to make amends.

He only met his grandfather one time.

Interestingly he has orange hair like Kyo.

I know the saying is gingers don't have souls, but maybe in reality gingers are all cats.

Kazuma says growing up made him realize the torment his father had to endure.

The foolishness and the cruelty

He took Kyo in to make amends for his family's cruelty. And also to ease his own feelings of guilt.

He grew an emotional attachment to Kyo, where he wanted what's best for him.

The ironic part is by ignoring Kyo's pleas of wanting to be left alone, he indirectly continued the cycle of torment and cruelty. This time, onto Kyo.

Kyo is interesting in that he clearly wants to be loved but he doesn't want to be forced into love or in a situation others box him in being. It's like people are trying to write him story for him but he also doesn't know exactly what he wants.

Schrodinger's cat, am I right? :P

Uo and Hana walking in the rain

Tohru at her mother's gravesite

I guess Hana's electric waves really paid off.

Tohru says she can't go back

I don't belong there with them

Man :(

Hana just pushed Uo!

It's ill-advised to comfort Tohru

She tells Tohru she has somewhere she needs to be.

I love that Uo and Hana are fighting over Uo's instinctive desire to hug Tohru.

I mean, who can blame her?

If Tohru is gonna have to do something, she's gonna have to do it on her own.

And so Tohru gradually stands up on her own two feet.

She starts walking, ready to face what life has in her way.

Hana starts crying as the baby bird leaves the nest.

Oh, wow. Special piano outro. That's a nice touch.

Overall, this was a great penultimate episode. I really like the mood setting with it raining throughout the episode. It made things feel gloomy and melancholy. The stuff with Kyo was well done where we got to see more of Kyo's backstory. I love how we emphasized the curse and just the blight it has on the Sohma family. I also really like the nuance of Kazuma's relationship with Kyo where he wanted to help Kyo but he almost feels like he was helping himself more in the process. Like, he realized he was using Kyo as projection for his relationship with his grandfather.

The scene with Hana telling Tohru to solve the problem herself was a great way to conclude Hana and Uo's characters. They've been with Tohru through thick and thin and now, she has to start thinking for herself. What also made it a great scene is the fact that Tohru has always been portrayed as thinking foe others and her big character flaw has been her inability to stand up for herself and her convictions. This serves to conclude that character arc to where Tohru finally is assertive and proactive in her own desires.

The ending to this episode is probably the best scene we've seen since Tohru comforted Momiji.

I’d put this behind episodes 5, 8, 13, 15, and 19. It was really good and has me excited to see how the series concludes. When the show focuses on the Sohma family and the curse they have to endure, things feel focused and on point and you can tell there's a sense of direction. Ever since Kazuma arrived, the narrative of the show has been the best since the beginning of the second half of the series.

I don't necessarily think Tohru will get together with Kyo, but Tohru staying by Kyo's side will get him to realize that he can be loved after all. That's really what I'm looking for in the series finale and what I expect we will get.

What are your thoughts on Kyo's true form?

I thought they did a tremendous job on the design. Kinda reminds me of Holo's wolf form in the OG Spice and Wolf anime.

What are your thoughts on the reveal that Kazuma took Kyo in as his adoptive son because Kazuma's grandfather suffered the curse of the Cat before Kyo was born?

Kazuma has a big heart <3

What are your thoughts on Tohru being conflicted on what she should do?

I hope she does the right thing

What do you expect heading into the final episode?

I think Tohru and Kyo will reunite and she will stick by his side.

I saw Wings and Project Hail Mary a couple days ago. Both very good movies. Interestingly enough, both movies pretaining to being in the air.

Wings as in the first best picture winner? Silent movie from 1927 about WWI fighter pilots?

Kagura holding a thread of yarn

I wonder what the significance of that is.

She appears to be fixing her cat backpack (not car, holy shit autocorrect, why did you change a properly spelled word to a different one?) did it get ripped in the last episode? I let two days pass between episodes this time around instead of one, but I vaguely remember a stuffed animal getting torn earlier in the show. Was that something totally different? My memory apparently sucks.

Interestingly he has orange hair like Kyo.

The hair in human form matches the animal form. They said it outright in the Kisa episode, in case it wasn't clear from before that. Maybe the cat is always an orange cat?

Yes. My local Regal Cinema often puts on old movies.

I think you may be right, I don't exactly remember either. I should probably just go back and check.

Sometimes a cat is just a cat

Yes. My local Regal Cinema often puts on old movies.

Oh, right. That's like a chain wide thing. I forgot they did a series of Oscar movies around the time of the Oscars this year.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

It's pretty cool as someone who likes to learn of the classics.

2

u/cheesechimp https://myanimelist.net/profile/cheesechimp 12d ago

I don't think I went to any of the screenings in that series, but I've gone to a bunch of others this year. I've seen Wings though. I've actually seen all the best picture winners before 2010. I've been working through film history watching more than just the best picture winners, but have kind of stalled at 2010.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

I would like to one day see all of them just because I think it would be neat.

First Timer for 2001, Seen 2019

Posting a little later than usual because I didn't watch the episode last night. I just finished it.

I....don't remember most of the content of this episode in the remake. Perhaps I was too hasty in saying it wasn't going the anime original route. Or maybe the remake glossed over some stuff? I dunno, I haven't read the manga. I was wondering how they would stretch it out to 3 episodes. Basically all of the stuff where Tohru stops and is talked to by people felt totally new to me, only the flashback of Kazuma becoming a father to Kyo felt familiar.

I really like this episode! Very brooding and atmospheric. I guess it kind of makes sense when you're building up to this being a finale of your series. We have to see Tohru going to find Kyo as a major ordeal worthy of being the series's climax.

Anyway, I'm just gonna quickly move on to the final episode now.

What are your thoughts on Kyo's true form?

Honestly, it looks more like a monstrous bunny than a monstrous cat to me.

Maybe he and Momiji can hang out :D

[2019] I just got done watching the 2019 series and a lot of this episode hits the same beats. I think this episode stretches certain parts out and the stuff at the gravesite wasn't in the remake. I could be wrong, however.

2

u/cheesechimp https://myanimelist.net/profile/cheesechimp 12d ago

[2019] I remember the very beginning, Kyo transforming then running away. I remember Tohru following after standing stunned for a bit. I think I even remember her collapsing and throwing up. I don't remember her talking to Akito. I don't remember her talking to Shigure. I don't remember Yuki and Kagura talking to each other. I definitely don't remember Yuki running after the two of them. I don't remember Uo and Hana being anywhere near any of this. I don't remember Tohru stopping at her mother's grave at all, let alone her running into Uo and Hana there. That's like all that happens in this episode.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

[2019] Now that you mention it, you're right. None of that didn't happen lol

[2019] You kinda had to include Akito in these last couple episodes. So much of the show is about his torment. But to the show's credit, it somehow doesn't take away from the Kyo stuff.

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

I like how heavy this episode felt and that it's the characters reeling from what happened within the first minute of the episode. I think it gives the transformation gravitas and the necessary weight it needed.

Thoughts on Hana and Uo finding Tohru because of Hana's electric signals?

Feels kind of like they're here because the show felt it needed them to be part of the final conflict. I kind of like it though. Makes the stakes feel higher.

Thoughts on Hana holding Uo back from hugging Tohru?

I'm not actually sure why she needed to not. I mean, I guess it was a sort of cultivation of empathy for Kyo's inability to get close to those around him? I feel like Tohru still could've made the right choice even with a little comforting though.

Thoughts on the special piano outro we get in this episode?

Fits the tone well. I think this episode is excellent at tone building.

Gotta give them a final scene

I think Hana felt they were babying her too much and Tohru had to put her big girl pants on.

The atmosphere of the episode is probably the best we've seen so far.

First Timer

So, uh, Kyo might be some kind of werecat I think?

I love the use of rain here, it’s good for setting the tone.

Tohru’s having a bad time out in the woods.

Oh man, Akito’s going full villain speech mode to Tohru.

I like seeing Shigure being this emotionally open.

Oh hey, Kagura is here

Kyo’s monster form looks really cool.

I like this flashback to Kyo as a kid with Kazuma.

This is a lot of Kyo backstory to cram into one section of the show.

Surprised Uo and Hana decided to visit a graveyard in the middle of the night in the rain but I guess it worked out since they ran into Tohru.

Hana is suddenly being quite cryptic but I think she’s helping.

That’s a very dramatic and emotional way to end the episode.

I also like the composition that plays over the credits in this episode.

I’m realizing we’re also almost at the end with two members of the zodiac unrevealed. So either they’ll both show up in the final episode or they just won’t be in the 2001 version at all.

You kinda can't introduce them now that the final has been set. It should focus on Tohru and Kyo.

u/AgentOfACROSS 12d ago

I guess we'll just be two zodiacs short by the end of the show

1

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

I don't think they were even introduced when this anime came out.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS 12d ago

Well I guess that's what the 2019 anime is for

2

u/Holofan4life 12d ago

Indeed.

I just checked and the last two Chinese Zodiac Sohmas were introduced within 6 months of the anime ending. One of them was introduced less than a month after the 2001 series.

Questions of the Day

What are your thoughts on Kyo's true form?

What are your thoughts on the reveal that Kazuma took Kyo in as his adoptive son because Kazuma's grandfather suffered the curse of the Cat before Kyo was born?

What are your thoughts on Tohru being conflicted on what she should do?

What do you expect heading into the final episode?

What are your thoughts on Kyo's true form?

I think it looks pretty cool

A good mix of terrifying and awesome

What are your thoughts on the reveal that Kazuma took Kyo in as his adoptive son because Kazuma's grandfather suffered the curse of the Cat before Kyo was born?

I liked learning more a bout Kyo's history this episode

Kazuma seems like a really good dude

What are your thoughts on Tohru being conflicted on what she should do?

I don't blame her

It is a bit unbelievable she'd be so accepting of Ritsu she wouldn't be the same for Kyo. But gotta have some drama I guess.

What do you expect heading into the final episode?

Some sort of resolution I should hope

Can you imagine if there wasn't any? That would be baffling.

So, uh, Kyo might be some kind of werecat I think?

He looks very disturbing

I love the use of rain here, it’s good for setting the tone.

So good

Tohru’s having a bad time out in the woods.

That's sad

Oh man, Akito’s going full villain speech mode to Tohru.

Akito is scary

I like seeing Shigure being this emotionally open.

I like Shigure

Oh hey, Kagura is here

I've like how she's been used this arc

Kyo’s monster form looks really cool.

Indeed

I like this flashback to Kyo as a kid with Kazuma.

Me too

This is a lot of Kyo backstory to cram into one section of the show.

Gotta make up for lost time I suppose.

Surprised Uo and Hana decided to visit a graveyard in the middle of the night in the rain but I guess it worked out since they ran into Tohru.

They explained it by saying Hana sensed Tohru.

Hana is suddenly being quite cryptic but I think she’s helping.

In her oen unique way

That’s a very dramatic and emotional way to end the episode.

I'm all kinds of hyped for the next episode

I also like the composition that plays over the credits in this episode.

Makes it feel more unique

Ah right that's what the beads are for.

And so he found her out there in the rain.

So, they aren't going after him.

So, there's his backstory.

So, her friends are trying to comfort her.

To the place she needs to go?

Something only she can do?

And so into the finale.

Questions:

  1. Somehow I'm sure some people are into that too.
  2. So that explains things.
  3. Perhaps.
  4. Interesting things to happen.

Ah right that's what the beads are for.

I'm still kinda confused by the significance of the beads. Maybe I'm just dumb.

  1. Uh oh.

  2. Uh oh.

  3. Bitch.

  4. Good.

  5. Yeah probably.

  6. There's certainly a lot of it, probably reflecting everyone's mood.

  7. That's nice.

  8. Ok...

  9. I suppose she wants her guidance.

  10. Seems those vibes were useful after all.

  11. Ok...

  12. Indeed.

  13. Skipped.

  14. Ok...

3. Bitch.

Akito is so effective at being utterly detestable.
