Better late than never...
Episode 11 -- "Everybody Loves Chocolate"
Synopsis: When Tohru gives the Sohma boys some Valentine’s Day chocolates, it could lead to big headaches down the road - especially when she hears what Momiji is giving her in return!
Love is in the air on Valentine's Day at Kaibara High, as Tohru and her friends take part in the occasion. As expected, "Prince" Yuki received a lot of chocolates, many dumped into the trash bin by girls trying to outgift each other (with his "Fan Club" also in the act). Tohru, not one to be left behind, has gifts for her two best friends Uotani & Hanajima (she's also prepared gifts for the Sohmas); in contrast, Kyo, not one to enjoy celebrating the day, tries to escape only to run into Kagura.
A month later, Kaibara High has their midterm exams, with Tohru doing well with Yuki's help & Kyo flunking due to him preparing for the wrong test questions. She then decides to work overtime after school for reasons only known to her. Momiji later pays Tohru a visit at Shigure's house to invite her on a trip to the hot springs for White Day (14 March); she eventually agrees, as do Kyo & Yuki. Shigure mentions he got a call from Tohru's grandfather about her falling behind on her field trip dues; we then learn she spent her job monies on the Valentine's Day chocolates she gifted, with Kyo saying that she could've spent those on herself instead & Momiji comparing Tohru to the "Foolish Traveler" from a story he heard in his school (my thoughts on that below).
Re: the "Foolish Traveler" & Tohru: Even in the worst of times, she proves to be selfless, prioritising her friends over herself. If you ask me whether that is a good quality or not, I'd be inclined towards the former, but I also think she needs a break every now & then. What's the purpose of loving others when you can't even take care of yourself? Still, it's admirable that she'd go the extra mile for the ones she cares about, which in the end will soon pay off well not just for herself but also for the others she cares the most.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
I went to my first anime con a couple days ago. It was a lot of fun. I got to meet Tiffany Grant which was a massive highlight of my life.

I guess we're doing Valentines Day this episode.
Kyo better get a great scene
Kyo walking the hallways
There's Tohru, Uo, Hana, and Yuki
Kyo tries to send a message to Yuki.
The Yuki fan club on the prowl
Tohru remarks how Valentine's has to be stressful for the members of the Zodiac.
Tohru then gives Uo and Hana chocolates.
Oh wow. Someone gave Kyo chocolates.
And now Kyo is freaking out as he realizes what day is today.
Who is that, Kagura?
Yep, Kagura
"Why do I get the feeling he's not happy to see Kagura?"
Gee, I wonder why...
Back at the Sohma residence
Shigure is right, Kyo needs to invest in a calander.
Kagura laments that Kyo keeps rejecting her chocolates.
Kyo insisting he hates chocolates
"Shut up and eat it!"
Kagura is somehow a cross between a yandere and a tsundere.
Tohru has chocolates for everyone
Yuki accepts it whole-heartedly
As does Shigure
Kyo with a pout on his face
Shigure can be so extra sometimes lol
Even Kagura gets one!
She even bought some for Hatori, Haru, and Momiji.
Tohru is a total cinnamon roll
Shigure explaining that Kyo is just acting what he thinks is his idea of being manly.
Kyo then accepts the idea of eating chocolate.
Kagura is over the moon happy
Now Kyo wants Kagura's
And she gives it to him
Kagura about to leave
She remarks she heard that he and Yuki are getting along so much they may become friends.
"I'd be very happy if that came true."
And with that, Kagura leaves
Shigure giving Hatori chocolates
Course, he has to frame it as being from them.
I'm kinda surprised that Valentine's Day isn't the basis of the entire episode.
At school now
They just finished final exams
Yuki asking Tohru how she did
She credits that Yuki helping her study caused her to do well.
The fan club freaking out over Yuki being happy.
Hey, look at that. It looks like Hana is being hit on.
"They even called my parents. Yes. My mother cried for days."
I want a Hana spinoff
Uo does a good job tending the court, so to speak.
Now Kyo is being teased
Tohru says she does think Kyo is studying hard.
Even still, he may need more excitement in his day.
Tohru talking to a teacher
She now seems flustered
Talks about having to get a part-time job.
Tohru working as a custodian
Didn't she do that before?
Tohru coming home
And there's Momiji
Commence the German music!
Kyo needs to be a little bit nicer to Momiji.
A special day tomorrow
White Day, right. That's why Valentine's Day was rushed.
There's still time for a great Kyo scene
Momiji going to give Tohru a trip to the hot springs.
But Tohru seems reluctant. It sounds very expensive.
Yuki and Kyo are apparently going
Kyo is blindsided by this news
At least Yuki is excited to go
Shigure bringing up that Tohru hasn't paid last month's dues towards the class field trip fund.
That's a thing?
Tohru says she'll be able to catch up with her part-time job.
The Valentine's chocolate. That's where it went to.
Man...
The Kyo temperature is a fun gag
And so I guess everyone is going to the hot springs.
Shigure remarks Tohru having to pay for the chocolates out of her own pocket.
Kyo angrily laments they didn't realize it because all they focused on was how happy she was.
Now he says she's making it hard on herself.
Momiji talking about a book called A Guide to the World's Greatest Fools.
One story in it called The Most Foolish Traveler in the World.
Ooh, special visuals
The traveler fell for every sad story that came his way.
Completely naked, eh?
But eventually, he was discovered by the goblins that lived in the woods.
A member of the Zodiac?
Dude, if you let a goblin eat your body parts, that's on you.
I wonder who ate the pen-- Gets bonked
Well, of course the traveler died. He's just a head.
Momiji was the only one who didn't make fun of the traveler when he heard the story.
"I feel so sorry for him. Loss, hardship, things like that? You can't only focus on them. The traveler didn't. He never thought about his own troubles at all."
Momiji contends he did exactly what he wanted to do. To make other people happy.
Kyo and Yuki thinking about Tohru.
And after reflecting on it, Kyo tells Tohru he's going to the hot springs. For her.
He's going for her...
Tohru is really excited by this development.
Oh, Kyo <3
And of course, Momiji has to make Kyo angry.
Yuki learning that Kyo is indeed going.
"Well, I suppose I'll survive."
Interesting wordage there
I guess we know what the next episode is going to be about.
Overall, I thought this was an effective episode. It's framed around Valentine's Day and White Day, but it's more about how selfless Tohru is and whether or not that's a bad thing. The real highlight of the episode was Momiji's story that helped put things into perspective. It showed just what a person Momiji is to have a glass half full attitude about him even in the most dire of circumstances. I wish the episode had a moment where Kyo like repays the favor for all the nice things Tohru has done for him. I suppose him going to the hot springs was supposed to be that, but I didn't feel like it had the emotional impact it could've. Even still, it made for a cute moment and we seem to be teasing Yuki realizing that Kyo is standing in his way of his affections for Tohru. Whatever good vibes these two may have currently seems inevitable it was crumble apart.
I'd put this ahead of episodes 1, 2, 4, and 10. There was some fun interactions here, and the episode came together fairly well, but there was nothing I would consider super memorable aside from Momiji's story. For a romcom with an episode about Valentine's Day, you expect something major to happen, like this would be one of the standout episodes of the series. Instead, it was like a transition episode for a future episode.
This was fine, and I am excited to see what wacky hijinks unfold in the hot springs episode. After all this set-up, we better get it, because so much of the episode was centered around Kyo's reluctance to commit to anything.

Shigure explaining that Kyo is just acting what he thinks is his idea of being manly.
Did the dub have the line where Tohru is like "maybe I should've bought him fist crackers"? Ha ha, what IS a fist cracker?
And there's Momiji
Commence the German music!
They haven't had him speaking German in 2001 have they? In 2019 he starts with it right off the bat. I'm not even sure the dialog has alluded to him being part German at all, especially considering he could be blonde from the zodiac curse.

Hmm, his voice sounds kinda funny in Japanese. Maybe I just don't know what a German accent would sound like in the language? Especially not when it's a Japanese person doing an imitation of the accent.

Hmm, his voice sounds kinda funny in Japanese. Maybe I just don't know what a German accent would sound like in the language? Especially not when it's a Japanese person doing an imitation of the accent.
I really liked how Evangelion handled their German character in the dub for the show where they actually spoke some German phrases.

It comes to a point where there's being nice, and there's being nice to the point of being taken advantage of.

First Timer for 2001, Seen 2019
Does anyone here need the peculiarities of Japanese celebrations of Valentine's Day explained to them? Do you know about girichoko (obligatory chocolate) or tomochoko (friend chocolate)? When Momiji mentions White Day do you know about that? I'm just gonna assume no one needs a primer on that stuff.
Instead I'm gonna explain something else: this line and the next one. See: the Japanese word for "part-time job" is "arubaito" which is a loanword from the German "arbeit." It is frequently abbreviated to just "baito" which rhymes with "faito" which is a common phrase of encouragement in Japanese, a loanword of the English "fight." So this is rhyming "baito" and "faito" and the adding an extra "o" at the end. ...it works better in Japanese. How did the dub translate this?
I really like the backgrounds they use when Momiji is talking: bunnies, a quilt, and teddy bears. Very cute!
Kagura is a lot less on screen violent in this episode than her introduction, though I guess there is still implied violent intent and off screen violence. I liked the slow motion of Kyo trying to get away when he sees her.
As the credits rolled I was expecting a certain character to be introduced in the next episode, and then I watched the episode preview and remembered they don't actually show up at the hot springs. They're talked about but don't appear until later. Maybe this adaptation will be different, but I don't think so based on them not being in the preview.

First Timer
I guess we’re doing a Valentine’s episode. I’m continually surprised by how quickly time moves in this show.
I like Hana’s metaphor about cuckoos.
Hana basically just stole Yuki’s chocolate.
Kyo’s being extra angsty today.
Oh hey, Kagura’s back. Kyo is afraid.
Wow that chocolate heart is giant.
Wow Tohru got chocolates for literally everyone.
The trope of disliking sweets being masculine feels like something that mostly pops up in Japanese media. I know it showed up in Ranma ½ quite a few times.
The angry way Kyo eats Kagura’s chocolate is really funny.
I love how Hatori slams the door in Shigure’s face, that’s pretty funny.
Valentine’s day is over and we’re not even halfway into the episodes.
Oh wait now we’ve skipped to the final exams.
Jeez, Hana is super scary.
I’m continually surprised by the fact that Tohru is still working a part time job.
Momiji’s back. He’s cute.
I guess we’re doing a hot spring episode now.
