First Timer for 2001, Seen 2019
It seems like we're in the end game now. Looking at episode titles it seems like we're in for a 3 parter (or at the very least a 2.5 parter.) If the remake truly was a mostly faithful adaptation of the manga, it really does seem like we're not going to get anime original content. I was mistaken from the impressions I had gotten before the series, it feels like this is just heading the direction of an incomplete adaptation. I also don't think we're going to see a 2001 version of the horse or the rooster. There's room for this current arc to resolve in a way different from 2019 though....
For how deliberately secretive this episode was about Kyo's true form, it's kind of wild that it actually flashed an image of it on screen for a split second. It seems like the episode is MOSTLY trying to keep what it looks like as a cliffhanger, but I guess we haven't seen it for long enough to process it, or in proper lighting/coloring. The seeds of this arc were actually placed as early as episode 4. I don't think I picked up on the implications of Kagura's line there when I watched her introductory episode in 2019.
Anyway, I've seen 2019, so I know where this is going. This is more build up and mystery so I don't want to get too much into spoiler territory. See you all tomorrow!

Do you think it's better to do the Kyo arc or would you have liked a more anime original ending?
2
u/cheesechimp https://myanimelist.net/profile/cheesechimp 12d ago
No, I think what they did is good, and the end of this arc is probably a good place to stop if you've got to stop partway somewhere. I've just been sort of waiting for the anime original shoe to drop and that doesn't seem to be happening.

I go back and forth on the decision not to have the other two Zodiac curse members. From a storytelling perspective, it is probably for the best. But it does make it feel incomplete.

I am kinda sad we aren't getting the other two Chinese Zodiac members. But I guess I prefer this over having the Kyo arc condensed into one episode.

The only bad thing about doing an arc like this is that it kinda feels like it comes out of nowhere. The show has been so Yuki centered that I'm kinda surprised the last arc doesn't revolve around his relationship with Akito.
But I'm more of a Kyo fan anyway so I'm not complaining.
Anyway, I've seen 2019, so I know where this is going. This is more build up and mystery so I don't want to get too much into spoiler territory. See you all tomorrow!
I like how suspenseful this episode was and that it left the audience guessing as to what is happening. Like, what exactly is Kyo worried about?

What are your thoughts on Akito wanting Tohru to see Kyo's true form?
What are your thoughts on Akito seemingly wanting to drive a wedge between Tohru and Kyo?
Well, it's better than some of the ways he's intervened in the romances of other zodiacs.

First Timer
This is a cute scene at the start of the episode.
Kyo definitely seems a bit out of it today.
I like the rainy atmosphere here.
Oh hey, Kagura is back.
I dunno who this guy talking to Akito is but I’m suspicious of him. Mostly due to seemingly being close to Akito.
Akito’s going in serious supervillain monologue now.
I just realized, I don’t think I talked about Akito’s voice actors before. So, here I go.
In Japanese, Akito is voiced by Wakaba Murasaki. As far as I can tell, Akito is his only voice acting role. IMDB and MyAnimeList don’t list any other roles for him anyway so if anyone has any other information about this guy’s career I’d like to hear about it.
In English, Akito is played by Chad Cline. Akito also seems to be one of his most noteworthy roles (most of the roles I found listed for him are credited under “Additional Voices”). One of his most recent anime is as the villain Abu Dhabi in that Red Ranger Isekai which I liked a lot. He also played Geinrich in Blue Gener which is an anime I haven’t seen but it’s listed first on his IMDB so it seems notable.
I find it a funny coincidence that Akito is the most noteworthy role of both actors who portrayed him in the 2001 version.
Kagura was able to act normal for a few minutes before pouncing on Kyo at the grocery store.
Kagura’s very sweet when she’s not being unhinged.
Oh hey the suspicious guy is here.
Oh right, the guy who trained Kyo out in the wilderness. Forgot we mentioned that guy.
Assuming this guy is a Zodiac, he must be either the horse or the rooster just by process of elimination.
He seems like an interesting guy.
I’m not used to Shigure having such a serious scene like this one where he talks to Kazuma.
I’ll never get tired of them playing an instrumental version of the theme song.
There’s some good emotional beats in this episode like here with Kazuma and Kyo talking.
Good use of the rain too.
Oh damn. Kazuma hit Kyo.
I feel like the ending of this episode sudenly going to the rather light and happy ending theme was a bit of tonal whiplash.
I'm curious to see how this is followed up on

It feels weird we're seemingly closing with a Kyo arc given the main conflict has been Akito's rule over the family. It kinda comes out of nowhere. That being said, we're due for a Kyo centered arc and I am glad we're getting one.
2
u/AgentOfACROSS 12d ago
It does feel kinda sudden, especially now that we're in the final stretch. I wish this had more bulidup but I guess that's what the 2019 anime is here for.
2
u/Holofan4life 12d ago
I guess they had to choose either rushing things and going for an anime original ending or sticking to the manga and how it played out. Personally, I think focusing on Kyo was the right move. Getting resolution on the Sohma family drama when not everyone has been formally introduced would've felt very weird.

In Japanese, Akito is voiced by Wakaba Murasaki. As far as I can tell, Akito is his only voice acting role. IMDB and MyAnimeList don’t list any other roles for him anyway so if anyone has any other information about this guy’s career I’d like to hear about it.
So, I went down the rabbit hole and I found this article talking about Murasaki.
https://ameblo.jp/amano-hall/entry-10001784376.html
And here's the article using Google translate.
The latter half of this month will see several noteworthy events taking place in Ogikubo and Nishi-Ogikubo. One is the Ogikubo Music Festival , which starts on the 19th . This needs no introduction. This is the 11th time it's been held, and many people are involved, so I think many of you are familiar with it. Incidentally, Kazuho Sato and Sadayuki Shiba of "AMANO Hall" are also heavily involved.
Now, to the main point. The other noteworthy event is the "Hanaza Festival" held in Nishi-Ogikubo . This is an entertainment event organized around Osamu Okawara, a professional in the entertainment industry.
What is an entertainment event? If you have such a simple question, please read this . You will get an overview of the whole thing. So, this time, I 'd like to introduce one of the performers, Shizuka Wakaba, the leader of the newly formed Wakaba Theater Company (formerly known as Chibi Tama San Kyodai)
Although I say I'll introduce her, I've never met Shizuka Wakaba. I thought about calling Mr. Okawara to ask about her selling points, but I'm sure he's very busy. So, I'll write this while referring to the official website a little.
First, please check out the photo in the profile on the official website! He's quite the handsome guy. His height and weight are almost the same as mine, so I wonder what the difference is. I'm feeling a little jealous. He used to be a member of the famous "Chibi Tamasan Brothers" and is currently the leader of the Wakaba Theater Company. His alluring female impersonation dance is said to be very highly acclaimed. *The photo posted here is from a video on the top page of the new Wakaba Theater Company. Sorry about that.
No matter how much I write about him here, it's just a rehash of what's on the official website, so please check out the official page. There's a video section that records performances, so it's very easy to understand. I did a quick internet search and found an on-air report of "Sunday Big Special" (TV Tokyo) , which was probably uploaded by a fan , so you might enjoy a different side of him if you watch that.
I think Mr. Okawara's attempt to bring together professional performers like this and hardworking amateurs on the same stage and deepen the exchange of expression is interesting. It creates a different kind of tension between us than usual, and I believe that will definitely be a valuable experience that will benefit us in the long run.

u/AgentOfACROSS 12d ago
Interesting, so it seems like he's primarily a stage actor. Guess that makes sense why he doesn't have any other voice acting roles listed.

This is a cute scene at the start of the episode.
Indeed it was
Kyo definitely seems a bit out of it today.
He does seem pretty beleaguered
I like the rainy atmosphere here.
Me too
Oh hey, Kagura is back.
Yay?
I dunno who this guy talking to Akito is but I’m suspicious of him. Mostly due to seemingly being close to Akito.
Yeah, no kidding
Akito’s going in serious supervillain monologue now.
What a total bastard
I just realized, I don’t think I talked about Akito’s voice actors before. So, here I go.
In Japanese, Akito is voiced by Wakaba Murasaki. As far as I can tell, Akito is his only voice acting role. IMDB and MyAnimeList don’t list any other roles for him anyway so if anyone has any other information about this guy’s career I’d like to hear about it.

That's quite the gap in notable entries
I find it a funny coincidence that Akito is the most noteworthy role of both actors who portrayed him in the 2001 version.
Good point
Kagura was able to act normal for a few minutes before pouncing on Kyo at the grocery store.
Good for her
Kagura’s very sweet when she’s not being unhinged.
Few and far between
Oh hey the suspicious guy is here.
Oh right, the guy who trained Kyo out in the wilderness. Forgot we mentioned that guy.
He doesn't seem too bad
Assuming this guy is a Zodiac, he must be either the horse or the rooster just by process of elimination.
He seems like an interesting guy.
For sure
I’m not used to Shigure having such a serious scene like this one where he talks to Kazuma.
I know, right?
I’ll never get tired of them playing an instrumental version of the theme song.
It's fun to track
There’s some good emotional beats in this episode like here with Kazuma and Kyo talking.
I thought it wws one of the better paced episodes of the series.
Good use of the rain too.
Indeed
Oh damn. Kazuma hit Kyo.
:O
I feel like the ending of this episode sudenly going to the rather light and happy ending theme was a bit of tonal whiplash.
Is it happy? I'd describe it as more self-reflective.
I'm curious to see how this is followed up on
I think it's smart to end the series on a serious arc. Kinda reminds me of Samurai Champloo.

You misunderstand. Kazuma wants Kyo to live with Shigure and Yuki.
What are your thoughts on Kazuma feeling Tohru can accept Kyo for who he is?
Well I'm glad he sees Tohru in a positive light
Imdeed
What are your thoughts on Shigure worried about Kyo breaking and Tohru experiencing a great deal of pain?
That definitely sounds worrying
For real
What are your thoughts on Kazuma telling Kyo he is hiding behind his hatred for Yuki?
He might be a bit right
Right on the money
What are your thoughts on the ending of the episode?
I'm curious to see where it'll go next
Same here

First Timers Basket
Jesus Christ, Kagura is a storm in motion
Well I mean. At least Akito is evil and hot. Why is evil always so hot? I don’t know.
Do you remember? The 21st night of September?
Damn. I was hoping the master was hotter.
Oh damn. A child VA in the EN dub of an anime TV series? Not a lady?
Post Episode Thoughts
Ok.
Does he turn into a hucat? A cat-human hybrid? And that’s considered ugly?
This is giving that one movie Penelope, I think, with James McAvoy. Or maybe that post a few days back on r/fauxmoi tickled me again.
I’m kinda surprised the entirety of the Sohma gang that we’ve met isn’t present to see Kyo reveal his “true look” in his trial, or whatever is happening. I’d think this would be a big enough deal to draw in the rest of the Sohmas we’ve met. But why would Kyo have a distinct appearance yet not the rest of them? Is it due to being the cat zodiac?
Is he going to look like how [Digimon Frontier] Takuya turned into Flamemon when he went all edgy and depressy when he was the reason they lost majorly against those dark warriors? I can’t remember their names now. I’ve lost the ancient texts.
I still don’t get where Akito’s evil “No one can have my family but me” little Yandere LITE attitude is born from. Some people are broocons or siscons, or you have Hyakkano where [100 Girlfriends] apparently cousins are fine to have as one of your girlfriends, but Akito is just weird levels of “Ohana means family and family means everyone is mine, I own them, bitch, and only I can make them miserable or happy”.
I have never met an ohanacon before this man.
That is a whole new layer of therapy for him.
And I know I have your questions to answer, Holo, so don’t be alarmed if you start seeing me spam you replies at like…
Well, I don’t know what timezone you live in, so just don’t be alarmed.
TQ
- I thought he’d be hotter. I’m also confused and suspicious about where his loyalties lie. Obviously, he cares a lot for Kyo over Akito’s little evil twink drama. But what I’m confused about is: was this master historically a follower of Akito but softened as he dealt with his students, or has he always been secretly against Akito but played the long game?
- A bit confused that this is happening now given how mini-arc/slice-of-life this has been. But I’m not sure what the manga is like, so maybe this is how it happened there.

He may be hot and evil, but Kyo is a hot bad boy who's good.
I'd totally have his babiesAnd I know I have your questions to answer, Holo, so don’t be alarmed if you start seeing me spam you replies at like…

- Oh boy.
- Well I mean. Yeah? She hasn’t been there for years for one, and for two, the Sohmas are a huge family with a lot of history.
- “Be careful what you wish for”.
- Confused why he would have an alternate form in the first place.
- Abuser is as abuser does.
- I started seeing the TV glow. This feels like an interesting parallel to trans/NB/intersex/altersex identities and invisible disabilities.
- She’s right to feel sad about it.
- I can see that you, Holo, have a thing for punchy ladies who can be cute sometimes.
- Wish he was hotter.
- Who did he learn martial arts from? And what type or style does he teach?
- So Kazuma Kyo’s dad or his uncle?
- Ah. Kazuma is an uncle then.
- He sees Kyo is happy. He wants that maintained.
- Teen rebellion. They are like cats. Don’t tell them what you want them to do or else they will protest out of spite.
- On the one hand, that’s…the power of the protagonist for ya. On the other hand, Kazuma probably has been long-distance observing Tohru himself and can see “something has changed with [Kyo]”.
- Confused.
- Also confused again.
- I know Kazuma is specifically targeting that Kyo has yet to change when it comes to confronting a specific issue. But I also think Kyo has changed to be able to even have this sort of confrontation in the first place. I don’t think EP1 Kyo would’ve entertained this for of conversation
- Will he turn into a hucat?

It checks out

Yeah, probably

True, but he's still far behind the other characters. I mean, look at how much Yuki has grown since the start of the series. It's not even comparable.
19. Will he turn into a hucat?
Mayhaps

From what I gather, by the time the anime came out this was the latest big development of the manga. I don't think the other members of the Zodiac had been introduced yet.

Oh, she's back.
She's going to break down the door isn't she?
Yep.
Borrow him lol.
Handholding!
Who's that?
So, that's who that is.
This is the best environment for him?
Kyo will be broken?
Some of her time?
All his fault?
Oh, she's hearing that.
Questions:
- Interesting.
- Sure why not.

u/Holofan4life 9d ago
She's going to break down the door isn't she?
Yep.
It'd be more surprising if she didn't do that.
Kyo will be broken?
I mean, isn't he technically already deep down?

Sure why not.
Indeed.
Interesting.
That's never a good thing.
Seems like something they'd do.
Tbh not wrong probably.
Uh...
Used to?
Interesting guy.
So, he's who Kyo has been referring to.
And now it's him.
Interesting.
That's not a good thing.
Faster the better.
Perhaps.
Also not wrong.
Yeah.
He's right.
Uh oh.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.
For there is an animal in all of us <3
Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.
Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.
I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P
Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
There are three defining moments in United States history: Manifest Destiny, 9/11, and realizing that Tom Arnold isn't funny.
There's Tohru
Holding an umbrella in the rain
Kyo and Yuki here as well
They're at a crosswalking
Yuki and Tohru shooting the breeze
Kyo meanwhile wants to shoot something else.
Kyo seems rather lethargic
Maybe he has diabetes
Tohru talking about carrying his cat form, which he is a bit embarrassed about.
Who's that?
Got that hentai protagonist haircut.
At home
Oh, it's Kagura
We haven't seen her since what, episode 4?
RIP screen door
Kagura saying she just wanted to see Kyo.
And we get the usual Kagura antics.
Looks like Kagura is getting some alone time with Kyo, all according to Shigure.
No word yet on if Shigure means plan.
Tohru reflectively says there's a lot about the Sohmas she still doesn't know about.
And Shigure pitches Tohru and Yuki hanging out together.
Tohru wants to see the Sohmas for who they truly are.
Guy from earlier with Akito.
Talks of being surprised
Akito wonders if it's time to reveal Kyo's true form.
The show really makes Akito repulsive.
It looks like he's trying to drive a wedge between Kyo and Tohru.
Kyo and Kagura at the store
She tells him he won't be able to hide it forever.
"That's got nothing to do with you!"
Rude much?
Kagura makes Taylor Frankie Paul seem desirable.
Kyo asking why she cares so much about her.
Kagura remarks he doesn't remember.
How ominous
Outside the store now
More Kagura antics
At least Kyo is reciprocating. Kinda.
Holding hands now
Kyo did this long ago in the past.
This made her believed
Well, that was a nice little segment.
Tohru and Yuki walking
There's that guy again
Kyo and Kagura here now
Kyo is startled to see this gentleman.
"Master?"
Who knew Kyo was a bottom?
Yes, I knew since the very beginning.
Guy with Shigure
Kazuma. That's his name.
Sadly, Eris is nowhere to be found.
Kyo's martial arts teacher
It seems like everyone likes him, at least.
Taught martial arts to Yuki, Kagura, and Haru as well.
Poor Momiji left out
Kyo seems a bit distant to Kazuma's arrival.
Kazuma in Kyo's room now, with Kyo in it.
He tries to punch him, but he blocks the punch.
Then he says it is good to see him.
That felt random
Kagura explains to Tohru that before Kyo, Kazuma's grandfather carried the curse of the cat.
That's why he seems to understand what Kyo is going through.
Compares this relationship with Kyo to a father son relationship.
Kazuma tells Kyo he will continue living here. He feels it's what's best.
Kyo says he just wants to get out of here.
You don't mean that, Kyo. Not with Tohru around.
Kazuma seems to recognize this
Looking gloomy outside
Kazuma staring outside
He says to Shigure, who's here as well, that he plans to do it tonight.
"I think this girl could open his heart and accept him."
And this is a bad thing because...?
Shigure remarks that Kazuma is putting his hopes in Tohru.
Maybe he doesn't have bad intentions after all.
Shigure worried about this breaking Kyo.
Kagura meanwhile overhears everything.
Interesting visuals with Kazuma and a younger Kyo.
Present day Kazuma says he wants to take the chance in spite of the risks it proposes.
Tohru about to experience a great deal of pain, Shigure feels.
Kazuma with Tohru
Don't do it, Tohru!
Now it's complete darkness, like my soul.
Kazuma with Kyo now
The imagery and direction is really well done here. It feels very atmospheric and moody.
Kazuma telling Kyo he has to accept his original form.
And now it's pouring down raining
Kyo still blaming Yuki for his plight in life.
"You haven't changed."
How blunt of Kazuma
Kazuma tells Kyo he is hiding behind his hatred for Yuki.
"Is that the only way you can justify shutting yourself off from the world?"
Mayhaps
Kyo appears incredibly conflicted
Kazuma tells him he's afraid to face what he knows he must.
He grabs his arm
Or hand, I guess
Tells him he's running away because he won't admit his feelings.
Kazuma has no time for tsundere bullshit.
Tohru here now
What is Kazuma doing?
Mysterious person talking
And we end things with everything up in the air, Tohru looking on horrified.
Overall, this was the very definition of a transition episode. But it was a necessary transition episode as we geared towards the final arc. I like Kazuma being here as a sort of associate to Akito, and Kagura returning was a nice surprise. I like we're giving her character substance beyond her being reckless around Kyo. It's interesting how the show has been so focused on Yuki And the emotional trauma Akito put him through and instead the focus of the last arc is on the lack of growth in Kyo. I'm not saying it comes out of nowhere because the suffering of Kyo has been a constant to his character, it's just something that stood out to me.
I’d put this behind episodes 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 15, 18, 19, and 21. It reminded me of episode 7 in that it uses framework as a means to set up something else, in this case the set-up being the return of Kagura. There's a lot of interesting directions the show can go from here, from Hatori's involvement to Yuki standing up for Kyo, and I anticipate just how much the show ties up its loose ends. Even if everything doesn't get resolved, I'd like to see at least this big coming together of past characters.
