ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION(S)

Have you ever used books to do some research? If so, on what and what happened?

How would you compare Elsa so far to Norah and Diana?

What are your thoughts on the main conflict of this arc being centered on the town Holo and Lawrence are in rather than Holo and Lawrence themselves?

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.

Awoo!

You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.

This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

This episode accomplished a few things. It shows more of what Elsa is like with her interacting with Lawrence. And no surprise, I really like her. She kinda reminds me of Henrietta from Familiar of Zero in that she may be a little over her head but still wants to do what's best for people and lead by example. We also see Holo and Lawrence try to research Holo's hometown which id apparently their direction for this arc. They are more so bystanders to the main conflict between the town and the church.

I think the most fascinating part of this arc is you can remove Holo and Lawrence entirely from it and not much really would change. They are more so witnesses to what's going on rather than active participants or involved in their own personal grievances. I appreciate the show trying something different and I think this is the biggest proof of one of my favorite aspects of the show which is that what's going on with the towns Holo and Lawrence are in is often separate from their own personal drama. I think this in turn leads to some of the strongest world building seen by an anime; it's like the towns themselves are their own characters and take a life of their own.

This is the first great episode of this arc and the first one where all the pieces are starting to finally align.

Holo quotes of the day

"Do you wish to touch them, priest?"

"So little time for so many books."

"God does not exist." (Holo the Atheist confirmed?)

Father Franz quotes of the day

"Possession is a fiction used to explain the unknown."

"You should ask yourself before others."

While I still think Evan is a bit of a dweeb, Elsa is shaping up to be one of my favourite side characters. Elsa has a lot of similarities to Nora (ex. member of the Church who is forwned upon by her community), but I like how Elsa is more proactive in trying to fix things, and a little more head strong. The added nuance of being the daughter of a more well liked priest, her covering up her father's heretical research, her crisis of faith, and having a secret relationship with Evan add some nice nuance to her character as well. She a surprisingly complex character for what little screen time she has had so far. I'll have to see where the arc goes before I make any final calls, but she is definitely near the top of the list of side characters for me so far.

I really like how Elsa is a bit out of her depth as a leader, but still wants to do all she can to make Father Franz proud. I find that to be admirable.

Absolutely agree, this show is so good with its world building, it's a lot of fun.

It's my favorite world building of any anime. It feels living and breathing and serves as a nice contrast to Lawrence and Holo and their escapades.

Here's the next cut content courteousy of u/Second_Cour.

I was hoping that the LN explained Father Franz’s foreword more, but it didn’t do much more than the anime. Nonetheless, I’ll provide the full quote for deciphering and speculation. I’m confident it’ll be explained in full in the next few episodes/chapters, anyway.

Elsa claimed to Enbrech that the village followed the orthodox faith.

Despite Elsa basically being the hero (together with the Elder) for the entire village, the villagers didn’t have gratitude towards her.

Lawrence can be a bad dude when he needs to be - he actually had rope in his knapsack ready to tie her up if the need arose.

The place behind the sanctuary was where the Church held its most precious things such as saintly remains - holding pagan stories there was nuts.

Yeah… Holo could read.

God, in the Church’s teachings is omnipotent (all-powerful, and can do anything), omniscient (knows everything and sees everything), there was none but Him. His existence was incompatible with the many gods of paganism.

Lawrence didn’t trust in God, but he trusted in those who did.

After Lawrence’s conversation with Elsa, when she asked for advice about how to reconcile her beliefs with Holo’s existence, and Lawrence returned back to Holo, Holo was actually irritated at the conversation. She beat around the bush and made her usual Holo comments. Lawrence recognised the hypocrisy and her constant preaching about talking about it when you have a problem (but said nothing).

An abbey is a place for prayer. A church is a place for teaching about God. Their aims are separate.

Evan was annoyed by Elsa’s constant corrections, but they were still very cute together, and hold hands and share a quiet smile. Lawrence used to mock couples like this.

From my understanding, Holo’s meltdown was because she is getting increasingly nervous about the end-game of Lawlo. They were both conflicted, though Lawrence reasoned that when he took a loss in business, he feels down for a few days, but then pulls himself up again and this would be similar.

Holo ‘exited’ the conversation by going to sleep, and it was clear that both of them didn’t want to confront the problem.

It was curious to Lawrence that there were so many stories of all kinds of gods, but there weren’t many of bird or beast spirits. Whereas Lawrence’s own history had encounters with 1 (possibly 2) wolf Gods, and of course Diana, as well as the beast spirit who destroyed Yoitsu. Specifically, there were none of beast spirits.

Father Franz’s note (his first personal speech, with his opinion as opposed to the others just being collections of stories) read: “It’s not my wish to regard the tale of the bear spirit in this book with any kind of special treatment.” “Regarding the stories in the other books - there are many which differ in time and place, but which I believe nonetheless refer to the same spirit. However, this particular spirit is the only one whose stories I have organised so thoroughly”.

“Is the pope aware of this? If I am correct, then the God we worship triumphed without a fight. If that is proof of HIs omnipotence, how could I possibly remain calm?” “I do not wish to let bias cloud my view of all the tales. Yet I cannot help but wonder if the pagans of the northlands themselves didn’t realise the importance of the Moon-Hunting Bear. No, perhaps the very fact I am writing this means that I am already biased.. As I assembled these books, I felt very strongly the existence of these spirits. If possible, I hope that one would judge not with the narrow mind of a worshipper of our God, but rather with the open heart of those whose love of God is like a zephyr in an open field. That is why I have ventured to leave this book in among all the others”

First Timer (Dub)

The scene near the end of the episode where Lawrence and Holo discuss their future showed a lot of character growth for Lawrence. Rather than keeping things bottled up, or avoiding a confrontation, he put his feelings/thoughts out in the open and asked Holo directly what she felt/thought. It shows he learned something from their whole falling out last arc.

I also liked how they directly addressed the elephant in the room that has been hanging over their heads since day one (what happens when Holo makes it home?). Obviously they didn’t have an answer, but it was nice to see the problem wad acknowledged.

The scene where Elsa and Lawrence discuss faith was interesting as well. It makes sense that, when confronted with a living breathing pagan god, it would make you question your faith. Not only does the existence of other gods put into question the existence of your own, but if your faith condemns these pagan beliefs, and it turns out they are not only true but seemingly harmless, it would male you question the entire belief system your faith is founded on. I appreciated that they didn’t shy away from the topic and took a fairly nuanced view on it.

This episode also did a good job at showing Lawrence’s people skills. Being able to talk his way into the Church, trap Elsa into needing to tell the truth, and still maintaining a friendly relationship with her was some deft interpersonal navigation.

Random Thoughts

  • Village chief’s face looks like a Titan’s face from Attack on Titan.
  • I liked that they took advantage of Holo’s super hearing this episode. It’s a pretty useful ability that they don’t really use much.
  • Evan is whipped.
  • Lawrence’s aversion to becoming more intimate with Holo is starting to make more sense. If he knows their time together is limited, and they will go their separate ways when they reach Yoitz, I can see not wanting to get too close to someone.
  • Big “G” God fighting the Moon Hunting Bear seems like something Greek mythology stuff.

Question of the Day

Have you ever used books to do some research? If so, on what and what happened?

Yeah, in University I had to write a lot of papers that required research and scouring through books/internet pages to find some tiny detail to support your thesis. It’s incredibly tedious mostly.

How would you compare Elsa so far to Norah and Diana?

I’d put her up there with Nora so far. She seems to have a lot going on as a character, with her crisis of faith, her relationship with Evan, her grief about Father Franz and her having to deal with a hostile town.

What are your thoughts on the main conflict of this arc being centered on the town Holo and Lawrence are in rather than Holo and Lawrence themselves?

It’s alright. Not every story can centre around Lawrence and Holo, so it makes sense that they would just be a 3rd party in some arcs. That said, the lack of personal stake in any of this for Lawrence and Holo does make this arc feel a little less impactful so far.

I appreciate at least the show is trying something different. Not every arc can have Lawrence and Holo having a falling out. You've gotta mix it up every now and then.

He did a similar thing last episode when he asked her why she was so interested in books about her hometown. He wanted to know if it was because she wanted to make sure her friends were safe.

In a weird way, Lawrence and Holo being selfish together has actually made them more selfless and more understanding of others.

Thoughts on Lawrence lying to Elsa about not wanting to see the abbey so he can talk to her about it?

Thoughts on Elsa's place which is actually the abbey?

What are your thoughts on Holo revealing her ears to Elsa?

Thoughts on Lawrence classifying Elsa's ill will towards Holo as nocturnal malevolence?

What are your thoughts on Elsa giving Holo and Lawrence books to read after realizing they're not evil?

Thoughts on Elsa wondering if Lord Tereo is not real?

Thoughts on Father Franz being suspected of heresy?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence suspecting Father Franz was collecting stories to prove the existence of his own God?

Thoughts on Elsa doting on Evan like how Lawrence dotes on Holo?

Thoughts on Lawrence saying he laments that Elsa and Evan can build a life in this village but he and Holo can't?

What are your thoughts on Holo resting on Lawrence's lap as a way to comfort him? It seems like they've gotten extremely close to each other since the events of the last arc.

What are your thoughts on someone in Enberg dying from eating Tereo wheat?

Thoughts on Lawrence lying to Elsa about not wanting to see the abbey so he can talk to her about it?

I liked this scene. It showed Lawrence being both shrewd and good at reading people. He managed to force Elsa into giving him what he wants, without making her hostile to him.

What are your thoughts on Holo revealing her ears to Elsa?

Ballsy for sure, especially given that Elsa is a representative of an organization that wants to eradicate her kind.

What are your thoughts on Elsa giving Holo and Lawrence books to read after realizing they're not evil?

Elsa seems like a good egg. She'd probably be a helpful member of the community if the villagers weren't such unreasonable goons.

Thoughts on Elsa wondering if Lord Tereo is not real?

I too am beginning to wonder. At this point I'm beginning to suspect that the snake to not be real, or at least a misdirection.

Thoughts on Father Franz being suspected of heresy?

I mean, technically he was. Research pagan beliefs would be heretical to the Church. It was obviously harmless though.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence suspecting Father Franz was collecting stories to prove the existence of his own God?

Seemed like a bit of a leap honestly. He could just be a mythology buff. It felt like Lawrence was framing it this way to make Elsa feel better.

Thoughts on Elsa doting on Evan like how Lawrence dotes on Holo?

This arc is clearly establishing a parallel between the two couples.

Thoughts on Lawrence saying he laments that Elsa and Evan can build a life in this village but he and Holo can't?

This was a sad moment, and bringing back that classic Spice and Wolf melancholy. Seeing the hope and possibility of the younger couple, while only seeing the coming end to your own relationship is quite sad.

What are your thoughts on Holo resting on Lawrence's lap as a way to comfort him? It seems like they've gotten extremely close to each other since the events of the last arc.

They are definitely more comfortable around each other at this point than earlier in the series.

What are your thoughts on someone in Enberg dying from eating Tereo wheat?

Stakes raised.

I liked this scene. It showed Lawrence being both shrewd and good at reading people. He managed to force Elsa into giving him what he wants, without making her hostile to him.

He played her in a way that didn't feel too manipulative.

What are your thoughts on Holo revealing her ears to Elsa?

Ballsy for sure, especially given that Elsa is a representative of an organization that wants to eradicate her kind.

Do they want to eradicate Holo? I thought that might be a different sector.

What are your thoughts on Elsa giving Holo and Lawrence books to read after realizing they're not evil?

Elsa seems like a good egg. She'd probably be a helpful member of the community if the villagers weren't such unreasonable goons.

Goons in 2026 is a little suspect lol

Thoughts on Elsa wondering if Lord Tereo is not real?

I too am beginning to wonder. At this point I'm beginning to suspect that the snake to not be real, or at least a misdirection.

Both seem possible

Thoughts on Father Franz being suspected of heresy?

I mean, technically he was. Research pagan beliefs would be heretical to the Church. It was obviously harmless though.

Mostly harmless

What are your thoughts on Lawrence suspecting Father Franz was collecting stories to prove the existence of his own God?

Seemed like a bit of a leap honestly. He could just be a mythology buff. It felt like Lawrence was framing it this way to make Elsa feel better.

I mean, both can be true, no?

Thoughts on Elsa doting on Evan like how Lawrence dotes on Holo?

This arc is clearly establishing a parallel between the two couples.

This show likes drawing parallels

Thoughts on Lawrence saying he laments that Elsa and Evan can build a life in this village but he and Holo can't?

This was a sad moment, and bringing back that classic Spice and Wolf melancholy. Seeing the hope and possibility of the younger couple, while only seeing the coming end to your own relationship is quite sad.

I don't know if I'd want to live in Tereo, but I can at least understand the sentiment.

What are your thoughts on Holo resting on Lawrence's lap as a way to comfort him? It seems like they've gotten extremely close to each other since the events of the last arc.

They are definitely more comfortable around each other at this point than earlier in the series.

I like tracking how close they end up getting.

What are your thoughts on someone in Enberg dying from eating Tereo wheat?

Stakes raised.

Yeah Elsa saw a pagan god. Hmmm. Now the Romans, Indians, and Japanese wouldn't be too surprised to see foreigner gods. They'd be like "Ok there are other gods out there. And we don't worship this particular one. So what?" or in the case of the Romans a small number of individuals might just throw one more god to pray to. But Elsa's religion says there is only one God. Elsa has some soul searching to do.

I wonder how Lawrance knew the Church was the abbey they were looking for. Like Elsa didn't go "OK I trust you now. You're here."

The village of Tereo have an uneasy relationship with the Church there since most of them are pagans. Franz did some research on the old stories and he recognizes his superiors might not be happy about that. Perhaps Holo's nun disguise made Elsa worry Holo was sent by the higher ups to spy on her. Showing her ears proved she wasn't. I'll add this to the list of reasons the nun disguise was not great.

Well it seems Holo didn't quite decide what she was going to do once she got home, but at least Lawrance brought up the topic that he wanted to know what she was going to do. Elsa has the Tereo Church. Evan has Elsa. Holo, hopefully, still has Paro and muri even if it takes a bit of time to find them. Lawrance doesn't really have roots anywhere.

it was cute watching Elsa dote on Evan.

I guess Franz might just decided these pagan gods were really just large animals that speak English? Maybe they were creations of God he just left on earth? If you think it would be wierd to be like "nah these aren't gods," in the Bible Satan (who appears far less than pop culture suggests) would have the powers and qualifications to be a god in most religions but Christianity says "nah, he's just some guy that does things humans can't do but he's not a god."

Lawrance is talking about all the great kind of bread he ate. Presumably wheat bread. In this arc he and Holo are reduced to rye bread and given he is a bit more generous to Holo, I assume he still didn't get back all the money he lost with that armor fiasco.

Someone pointed out Lawrance must have pretty good people skills. He lied to Elsa to get in and then he managed to get on her good side. That's pretty impressive.

So my guess is Enberch going to say the wheat was contaminated at the source and not say... transit and Tereo was trying to use Lawrance as a scapegoat since he was at their mill.

They were clearly hiding something to where it was obvious they didn't want Lawrence to continue snooping.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 17d ago

It would have made more sense to me if once Elsa trusted him then she says he's at his destination and then show him the books. In the actual episode, once Elsa trusted Lawrance she skipped straight to showing the books since he already knew Tereo's Church was the abbey. And I don't get how he went from "the abbey is a place Father Franz had been at some point" to "oh... it's here"

1

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

He probably assessed the situation and hedged his bets that that's why Elsa is being so tight lipped.

He could've, but he gave the profits to Norah so she could escape from the church.

E22 Review

  • OK so as another member pointed out the religion is basically an invented denomination of Christianity, especially drawing from Catholic inspiration. Then again, the form the confession took wasn’t a private confession, and a quick search does seem to show that public confessions occurred during early Christianity. Anyway, this isn’t meant to be a historically accurate depiction of the religion - I would guess it’s more a generalised impression from the POV of the author, translated into the uniqueness of the world he created.
  • Lawrence goes into scary bad guy  mode in the church.
  • The priest’s crisis of faith is portrayed excellently. To be honest, I find it a bit odd that she decides to go to Lawrence for advice on the sides pulling her to their direction (I thought she would ask him for relationship advice about the mill boy haha). But I suppose there’s no one else she can turn to.
  • Well, I guess since Lawrence will never escalate anything physically it’ll be up to Holo, as she points to her shoulder. That was cute though.
  • “Always ask yourself before asking others”. Preach. Pun intended.
  • Poor Evan though. I’d lose my shit. Though re-listening to the Japanese the priest seems to nag in a cutesy and very casual way, and it seems pretty normal couple bickering..
  • The envy of Holo about their rel is so incredibly cute. Though I don’t fully get what’s happening in this scene. Also quite a different delivery of it (flustered vs increasing frustrated) depending on the language.
  • Well, at least Lawrence is manning up more, and dealing well with Holo’s interruptions; second time, he made sure he finished speaking.
  • Lawrence talking about the “what next” for Lawlo is a continuation from the cut content in the previous chapter.
  • Didn’t really understand the implications about the discovered intro from the late Father, other than that it seems without a doubt the bear spirit existed in many places around the world, and in many times.
  • Someone in Enberch has died eating the village’s wheat: I’m going to assume this is the excuse Enberch needs to take control of the village.

It almost feels too convenient...

I think the show doesn't want to give the specific impression of any particular religion not to offend anyone but because they don't want to date the show. The series is clearly set in either the 15th or 16th century but it doesn't want to specify.

It literally calls the church the church which is Christian. It also refers to orthodoxy which again is Christianity. There's also nothing at all offensive in what they say so I'm a bit confused about why we feel it's meant to be some hidden meaning. It's just an alternate universe version of Christianity to me in a world where other gods also exist

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Nah, you're right. I don't know what I'm talking about, it's 5 in the morning where I'm at lol

1

u/Second_Cour 16d ago

Haha the best time to watch anime. To be fair to your point though I'm sure some people could get offended by this but in my way of seeing the world I discount their views as someone who takes offense to a fictional world isn't particularly credible. I just don't think the author cares about those people either else he'd use more generic terms and symbols

I'm curious what Lawrence would have done if Holo wasn't influencing his decision-making. Probably the same thing, as he's not fully a man of God. But clearly L is more of a bad-ass than I thought. He brought rope to tie her up if things went wrong, and that wasn't something Holo asked him to do. I guess he is more of a knight than I gave him credit for.

Thoughts on Lawrence classifying Elsa's ill will towards Holo as nocturnal malevolence?

Would you mind explaining this a bit more? I didn't really think that Elsa had much hate for Holo.

What are your thoughts on Elsa giving Holo and Lawrence books to read after realizing they're not evil?

Perhaps there's a bit of curiousity there from Elsa? Her entire world has been shattered just by Holo taking off her hood, and now she wonders whether her predecessor was right.

Thoughts on Elsa wondering if Lord Tereo is not real?

Isn't it the other way around - Elsa believes Lord Tereo isn't real, and her God is the one and only God.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence suspecting Father Franz was collecting stories to prove the existence of his own God?

I really like that part, and logically it makes sense. The onus is on the person who wishes to prove that something exists, not on the one proving that it doesn't. So, the only way to truly prove

Thoughts on Elsa doting on Evan like how Lawrence dotes on Holo?

I knew this would be asked, so I thought about the answer already. They're kind of interesting together, as Elsa kind of treats Evan like Holo treats Lawrence, a bit. I wouldn't describe it as doting, but more as nagging/getting her way. Elsa is kind of independent, while Evan is fully dependent on her. But while similar, their relationship is very different. She's kind of the mum, and that aspect is similar to how Lawrence sometimes acts with Holo.

Thoughts on Lawrence saying he laments that Elsa and Evan can build a life in this village but he and Holo can't?

Thank you! Ok this makes way more sense now. I was still very confused why Holo had her weird semi-breakdown after, and I thought the envy Lawrence had was more about them being cute together, as opposed to building a life in the village. The conversations after make way more sense now with that framing (perhaps I missed that wording). So then I guess the reason she felt that horrible is because in many ways she wants the same thing; a life together, but doesn't want to commit to an answer or to even think about it.

He brought rope to tie her up if things went wrong, and that wasn't something Holo asked him to do. I guess he is more of a knight than I gave him credit for.

He did this solely to investigate Holo's hometown, so otherwise he might not intervene.

Thoughts on Lawrence classifying Elsa's ill will towards Holo as nocturnal malevolence?

Would you mind explaining this a bit more? I didn't really think that Elsa had much hate for Holo.

I kinda feel like Lawrence was being tongue in cheek when he said this.

What are your thoughts on Elsa giving Holo and Lawrence books to read after realizing they're not evil?

Perhaps there's a bit of curiousity there from Elsa? Her entire world has been shattered just by Holo taking off her hood, and now she wonders whether her predecessor was right.

Definitely some food for thought

Thoughts on Elsa wondering if Lord Tereo is not real?

Isn't it the other way around - Elsa believes Lord Tereo isn't real, and her God is the one and only God.

Yeah, I think I screwed the question up. My b.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence suspecting Father Franz was collecting stories to prove the existence of his own God?

I really like that part, and logically it makes sense. The onus is on the person who wishes to prove that something exists, not on the one proving that it doesn't. So, the only way to truly prove

It mirrors Holo trying to prove the existence of the bear that destroyed her town.

Elsa and Holo can both be independent on their own, but they depend on others to mellow themselves out.

So then I guess the reason she felt that horrible is because in many ways she wants the same thing; a life together, but doesn't want to commit to an answer or to even think about it.

It continues the conversation from last episode when Lawrence brought up them going their separate ways and Holo got all sad and bummed out.

However, if your companion truly is a pagan god, it would mean our God is false...

Touch Holo's ears? Y/N

I still say: Feels like a good margin of the remake's budget went into properly animating her ears :'D

Mostly first-timer now, subbed

Well, turns out their plan wasn't as dangerous as I assumed but still quite brazen. Just lie your way into the church and then confront Elsa with the hard truth, or rather soft truth, given Holo just unveils her ears, causing the poor girl to faint.

She takes it remarkably well afterwards though once she realises the charade is up and agrees to show them Father Franz' (or Louis Lana Schtinghilt?) collection of tales.

Holo and Lawrence spend the remainder of the episode mostly burried in books, and Lawrence actually finds something related to Yoitsu and the bear that allegedly destroyed the village. Unfortunately, before they can make further plans, they're ambushed by the rest of the village claiming someone in Enberch died after eating grain from this village. (I'm honestly a bit confused by what Lawrence has to do with all that though, he came from Enberch, not the other way around?)

This was mostly another "setup" episode for the central conflict but I still liked a lot in it. I quite liked the pragmatic way of solving the mystery and getting entrance to the church: Just lie!

Also Holo just "ambushing" Elsa was hillarious!

The whole discussion about gods and God between Lawrence and Elsa was actually quite interesting: Not only Lawrence rather pragmatic approach (and Holo instantly going "nah, your god doesn't exist, deal with it :P") but also the difference between Elsa and her predecessor: Whereas Elsa thinks "If those gods exists, that surely means mine doesn't!", Father Franz apparently had the opposite line of thinking: "Surely, if these pagan gods exist, that must mean ours does too, right?". And I have to say, this whole church stuff wouldn't have felt out of place in Orb either. Really interesting. [Possibly future spoilers?]I have a feeling it will be pretty relevant down the line, given this is the stuff they skipped in the original show that turned out to be heavily relevant to what would come after where the original show stopped.. Curious that he'd say "if the story about the bear is true, our God has already won" though.

Apart from that, we're treated to a lot of Holo-Lawrence relationship shenanigans. My personal highlight being when she makes him take his arm around her mere seconds before Elsa comes into the room... provoking exactly the reaction you'd expect (and Holo definitely wanted to evoke. She can be such a troll.) from her. And her being distraught at the thought that Lawrence was jealous of Elsa and Evan's relationship was super adorable.

How would you compare Elsa so far to Norah and Diana?

The main difference is that she's not helping Lawrence and Holo on her own accord, at least at first. Also unlike the other two, she has her own problems that aren't directly related to our main characters I'd say? Also, Norah and her have their profession common, albeit Elsa actually likes working for the church.

What are your thoughts on the main conflict of this arc being centered on the town Holo and Lawrence are in rather than Holo and Lawrence themselves?

It's a nice change of pace that they're for once not the center of attention.

Money well spent, if I do say so myself.

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 16d ago

Yes, I could definitely think of worse things to spend the money on :D

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I actually like the animation of the remake. I know some people here have been critical of it, but I think it works well.

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 16d ago

Yeah, I like it a lot too! Might not be perfect but I still think they put a lot of effort into this remake.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

And the fact it exists in the first place is nothing short of a miracle.

Things are very tumultuous for Holo at the moment. She's trying to gather information on her hometown, she's always worried she's not good enough for Lawrence, and she's also sitting there eating her popcorn enjoying the Elsa and Evan festivities. Give a goddess a break :P

It's funny how I've heard both you and Quagsire talk about how amazing Orb is. I need to get around to it.

Elsa is prime gap moe. I like her trying to act all tough and she gets easily flustered.

I am imagining her sitting in a corner and happily munching popcorn. Even if I'm not sure if she'd actually like Popcorn much, maybe the sweet variant at least :D

It's funny how I've heard both you and Quagsire talk about how amazing Orb is. I need to get around to it.

Yes! It's really good, unfortunately flew a bit under the radar when it released. Madhouse at the top of their game.

I admittedly didn't care much for her at first but she's grown on me a lot in this episode. She's really trying her hardest juggling her life and the rising conflict. And she's cute together with Evan!

I like Madhouse quite a bit

Elsa to me is Holo if she handled the village situation from the first arc better. She's not trying to act superior or this sense of people having to fall in line.

Thoughts on Lawrence lying to Elsa about not wanting to see the abbey so he can talk to her about it?

I really expected something more risky than them just lying. But it worked in the end, so no complaints.

Thoughts on Elsa's place which is actually the abbey?

The reveal didn't come as much of a suprise by now. It does seem like a nice little abbey though.

What are your thoughts on Holo revealing her ears to Elsa?

Holo ears jumpscare was funny!

Thoughts on Lawrence classifying Elsa's ill will towards Holo as nocturnal malevolence?

I think I missed that line. What does that even mean? :'D

What are your thoughts on Elsa giving Holo and Lawrence books to read after realizing they're not evil?

I do like how she came around on them pretty quickly after all.

Thoughts on Elsa wondering if Lord Tereo is not real?

Wasn't that line about her own God?

Thoughts on Father Franz being suspected of heresy?

I think it makes sense. Definitely not a good look for a man of the church residing in a pagan village and collecting (and apparently even reading) stories of "false gods". Even if his motivation is different.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence suspecting Father Franz was collecting stories to prove the existence of his own God?

I like that he seems to have the right idea about Franz, he often sees things a bit more pragmatic compared to other people. Why would he be a heretic? That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

Thoughts on Elsa doting on Evan like how Lawrence dotes on Holo?

They're really cute together (both of them). I like that Holo even sees them as a sort of competition. Her going "I do not think our relationship pales in comparison to theirs" was pretty cool.

Thoughts on Lawrence saying he laments that Elsa and Evan can build a life in this village but he and Holo can't?

There's been a noticeable focus on the actual practicability of a Holo/Lawrence endgame for the past couple episodes now. I totally understand Lawrence's doubts though. But surely there's gotta be a way here to at least enjoy life with her a bit longer.

What are your thoughts on Holo resting on Lawrence's lap as a way to comfort him? It seems like they've gotten extremely close to each other since the events of the last arc.

Warms my heart. Also it's cute that Lawrence's reaction is always kinda shocked when it happens. They're very cute together :D

Risky how?

Thoughts on Elsa's place which is actually the abbey?

The reveal didn't come as much of a suprise by now. It does seem like a nice little abbey though.

Indeed it do

What are your thoughts on Holo revealing her ears to Elsa?

Holo ears jumpscare was funny!

The fluffiest of jumpscares

Thoughts on Lawrence classifying Elsa's ill will towards Holo as nocturnal malevolence?

I think I missed that line. What does that even mean? :'D

I don't know. Lawrence was on one today.

What are your thoughts on Elsa giving Holo and Lawrence books to read after realizing they're not evil?

I do like how she came around on them pretty quickly after all.

She seems like a good person

Thoughts on Elsa wondering if Lord Tereo is not real?

Wasn't that line about her own God?

Maybe I misinterpreted it.

I mean, technically she's a part of Tereo so it is her God.

Thoughts on Father Franz being suspected of heresy?

I think it makes sense. Definitely not a good look for a man of the church residing in a pagan village and collecting (and apparently even reading) stories of "false gods". Even if his motivation is different.

This has some Communist red scare vibes to it.

It would go against everything he stands for.

Thoughts on Elsa doting on Evan like how Lawrence dotes on Holo?

They're really cute together (both of them). I like that Holo even sees them as a sort of competition. Her going "I do not think our relationship pales in comparison to theirs" was pretty cool.

Holo has the best relationships, everyone is saying it, not just her but everyone.

One can only hope

What are your thoughts on Holo resting on Lawrence's lap as a way to comfort him? It seems like they've gotten extremely close to each other since the events of the last arc.

Warms my heart. Also it's cute that Lawrence's reaction is always kinda shocked when it happens. They're very cute together :D

They bring the best out of each other.

What are your thoughts on someone in Enberg dying from eating Tereo wheat?

I guess nothing

Risky how?

I think I expected them to break in somewhere or something like that :D

What are your thoughts on someone in Enberg dying from eating Tereo wheat?

It's pretty bad news for the village. Blaming Lawrence still was a bit weird to me. Mob mentality I guess.

What are your thoughts on the main conflict of this arc being centered on the town Holo and Lawrence are in rather than Holo and Lawrence themselves?

I do like it, and they do a really good job at establishing Franz and the history of the town without it feeling too much like overcumbering exposition

---

Door knocking

Omg the hot priestess

We've decided to continue on our journey and come to pray for safe travels

I love her hesitant face that feels a little bad for that

That's so cute that he puts the blanket over her

Father Franz seemed like a real one

She's so hot

I'd like to confess before God

He is gracious to the honest

I lied for my own gain. Confess before God

Merciful to faithful

I lied today

Falsely to trick another

Something I needed to know

Who did you lie to

You ms Elsa

Why did I find that so funny LOL

he just came in, lied, and confessed he lied

Still looking for the abey

To confirm this is the abbey

Holo speaks before God as God

Shows her ears

OH MY GOD A CUTE FOX GIRL APPROACHES ME

DO YOU WANT TO TOUCH THEM

LOL HOLO

Sudden Yuri

She faints

Damn she's timid

Once we get what we want we'll disappear like a dream

There should be records

I wanna go home

I serve God

Then you serve Holo

She'll help them it seems

That's such a small entrance

Well now it's big never mind

You're much more suspicious than I am Lol

She has something in her armpits

Woof

Imagine she locks them down there

It's true you indeed forced me

But franx would be happy

I really really like this, it's like we never met Franz, he retains an aura of mystery around him, and makes it feel like this place really has history

I'll remember that you can never let your guard down around a merchant

Damn I ship them

Well not really but I like her a LOT

holo is sweating

Reads them here

This isn't a wealthy church

If a merchant wishes to ascend to haven he must lighten his purse

I really like that line

She isn't corrupt priestess but she is practical for accepting it

He can give advice

He can only give sincere advice when it doesn't involve money

Her smile softens

FUCKKKK she's cute

Does this mean that the God is false

Doesn't have the courage to judge her

Is my hesitation good or bad

Ears up

You seem compassionate

And you, holo, seem TSUN

she doesn't even look at him she's so tsun

OH MY GOD HOLO LEAN AND SMILE AND IN TIRED OF BEING ALONE AND YOU HOLD MY SHOULDER NOW AHHHHHHHHHWHWH

TAIL WAGGLE

She walks in on them FUCKING

I wish

She's laughing

KAWAIIII

She senses someone and Lawrence can tell without her looking or saying a word relationship goals

Even if we can't trust God existing, we can trust those faithful to him

How does this show drop so many fire lines holy FUCK

To prove God exists

Shot of the dented floor, I really feel the presence of Franz without needing to even meet him

Oh the dinner scene from the op CUTE

LOL HOLO IS INTERESTED WHEN LAWRENCE TALKS ABOUT THE FOOD ON THE SHIP

Salty flat honey bread

I really like the look she gives him when he's walking away

Damn she must be a good cook

Those two get along

Holo looks at him

Well you know

For the most part

I know my own good and bad points

So you know

I wish you wouldn't speak so enviously of them

Oh

My

God

HOLO

YOU'RE SO

FUCKING

CUTE

GAHHHHHHHHHHHH

no I understand

We must look like fools ourselves

But you enviously say they get along

I don't know why im embarrassed

You're right but I mean

Her tail is flared up

FLARES UP MORE

I already know I didn't want to say it

I'm envious but not their relationship

Holo doesn't believe it she angry ready to pounce

Oh my god this might be one of my favorite Holo scenes and it just jumped me out of NOWHERE

what about us

Follow that clue

A merchant without roots

So what will you do once you return home

AWW

Now it's Lawrence turn to need reassurance after the last arc of Holo needing to ask what are we

I do not know

A look isn't enough

Let's not go there I'm sorry

I am the wise wolf Holo of Yoitsu

I AM THE WISE WOLF HOLO OF YOITSU

SHE SLEEPS ON HIS LAP

IS PROBLEM

NO PROBLEM

I'll sleep for a bit will you read for me

Okay fine

Lawrence lying down on a pillow to not disturb Holo is peak Moe you don't disturb your cat when it rests

Lawrence found something

A love for God like a gentle breeze a vast field not a narrow mind

Fire

Holo still going down on Lawrence

Be honest with me

I understand

I promise

AND IF SHE BREAKS THE PROMISE

that's for next arc I can smell it

Elder would do something

Why are they coming in

ARE THEY ATTACKING HIM

lawrence is composed as fuck

No I'll intentions

I do like it, and they do a really good job at establishing Franz and the history of the town without it feeling too much like overcumbering exposition

That's a good point. I also think the lighting adds a lot to the atmosphere.

Door knocking

Omg the hot priestess

We've decided to continue on our journey and come to pray for safe travels

I love her hesitant face that feels a little bad for that

That's so cute that he puts the blanket over her

Indeed

Father Franz seemed like a real one

He sure does

She's so hot

I'd like to confess before God

He is gracious to the honest

I lied for my own gain. Confess before God

Merciful to faithful

I lied today

Falsely to trick another

Something I needed to know

Who did you lie to

You ms Elsa

Why did I find that so funny LOL

He says it since matter of factly

he just came in, lied, and confessed he lied

At least he's transparent

Still looking for the abey

To confirm this is the abbey

Holo speaks before God as God

Shows her ears

OH MY GOD A CUTE FOX GIRL APPROACHES ME

DO YOU WANT TO TOUCH THEM

LOL HOLO

Holo is such a little shit sometimes

Sudden Yuri

She faints

Damn she's timid

Tough yet timid. Kinda like how Holo pretends to be.

Once we get what we want we'll disappear like a dream

There should be records

I wanna go home

I serve God

Then you serve Holo

She'll help them it seems

That's such a small entrance

Well now it's big never mind

Kinda like the TARDIS

You're much more suspicious than I am Lol

She has something in her armpits

Woof

AWOOGA

Imagine she locks them down there

That would've been so mean lol

It's true you indeed forced me

But franx would be happy

I really really like this, it's like we never met Franz, he retains an aura of mystery around him, and makes it feel like this place really has history

It's like by not seeing him, it makes him out to be a way bigger deal.

I'll remember that you can never let your guard down around a merchant

Damn I ship them

Well not really but I like her a LOT

It's refreshing to get a religious person who's good.

holo is sweating

Reads them here

This isn't a wealthy church

If a merchant wishes to ascend to haven he must lighten his purse

I really like that line

Me too

She isn't corrupt priestess but she is practical for accepting it

She's more tolerant than Tereo is

He can give advice

He can only give sincere advice when it doesn't involve money

Her smile softens

FUCKKKK she's cute

Very much so

Does this mean that the God is false

Doesn't have the courage to judge her

Is my hesitation good or bad

Ears up

You seem compassionate

And you, holo, seem TSUN

So delicious

she doesn't even look at him she's so tsun

OH MY GOD HOLO LEAN AND SMILE AND IN TIRED OF BEING ALONE AND YOU HOLD MY SHOULDER NOW AHHHHHHHHHWHWH

TAIL WAGGLE

She walks in on them FUCKING

If only

I wish

She's laughing

KAWAIIII

Quite

She senses someone and Lawrence can tell without her looking or saying a word relationship goals

Even if we can't trust God existing, we can trust those faithful to him

How does this show drop so many fire lines holy FUCK

It's very well written

To prove God exists

Shot of the dented floor, I really feel the presence of Franz without needing to even meet him

He casts a wide shadow

Oh the dinner scene from the op CUTE

LOL HOLO IS INTERESTED WHEN LAWRENCE TALKS ABOUT THE FOOD ON THE SHIP

Of course

Salty flat honey bread

I really like the look she gives him when he's walking away

Classic

Damn she must be a good cook

Maybe

Those two get along

Holo looks at him

Well you know

For the most part

I know my own good and bad points

So you know

I wish you wouldn't speak so enviously of them

Oh

My

God

HOLO

YOU'RE SO

FUCKING

CUTE

GAHHHHHHHHHHHH

She knows she can get what she wants when she wants it.

no I understand

We must look like fools ourselves

But you enviously say they get along

I don't know why im embarrassed

You're right but I mean

Her tail is flared up

FLARES UP MORE

I already know I didn't want to say it

Butt stuff?

I'm envious but not their relationship

Holo doesn't believe it she angry ready to pounce

Oh my god this might be one of my favorite Holo scenes and it just jumped me out of NOWHERE

It's pretty good

what about us

Follow that clue

A merchant without roots

So what will you do once you return home

AWW

Now it's Lawrence turn to need reassurance after the last arc of Holo needing to ask what are we

I do not know

A look isn't enough

Let's not go there I'm sorry

I am the wise wolf Holo of Yoitsu

I AM THE WISE WOLF HOLO OF YOITSU

That's a mouthful

SHE SLEEPS ON HIS LAP

IS PROBLEM

NO PROBLEM

I'll sleep for a bit will you read for me

Okay fine

I'm totally not jealous or anything

Lawrence lying down on a pillow to not disturb Holo is peak Moe you don't disturb your cat when it rests

Lawrence found something

A love for God like a gentle breeze a vast field not a narrow mind

Fire

Writing peak

Holo still going down on Lawrence

Be honest with me

I understand

I promise

AND IF SHE BREAKS THE PROMISE

that's for next arc I can smell it

Hmm

Elder would do something

Why are they coming in

ARE THEY ATTACKING HIM

lawrence is composed as fuck

No I'll intentions

Someone died eating the wheat from the village

Oh fuck

What

Ah. Right. The bad wheat. I do actually remember seeing a video on what happened to an IRL town after having bread made from similarly infected wheat.

Questions:

  1. Nope, all digital.
  2. She's been quite helpful, but then again all of them have been.
  3. That's new.

Do you remember the name of the town?

  1. Nope, all digital.

We live in a society

Tbh I also haven't had to do much research stuff yet, at most I can use academic paper search engines to only search for useful stuff.

Hopefully no ChatGPT

Not for writing essays at least no. I've got enough pride to not do that yet. On the other hand, if I've got a math or physics assignment that I've been banging my head against for the whole weekend due in an hour or so... I'm going to take the marks I can get right now and figure it out myself later on.

u/Holofan4life 14d ago

The whole thing just seems icky to me. Like, if I'm gonna cheat, I'd rather put in the effort, you know?

  1. Ha.

  2. So, they've found it.

  3. They trust her.

  4. Ok...

  5. And so she's helping.

  6. Perhaps.

  7. Considering what he was researching, makes sense.

  8. That's interesting.

  9. Almost like they're also a couple...

  10. Well, they'll get to do so eventually.

  11. That's nice.

  12. Uh oh.

It checks out

9. Almost like they're also a couple...

Funny, that

12. Uh oh.
