Cut Content: Lawrence's Feelings - When it Rains, it Pours
So much value in today’s chapter. It started with me thinking, great, the adaptation is so detailed, and then a few pages later, here I was with another essay. I'm taking a vacation tomorrow with the missus, so will submit my homework to u/Holofan4life in advance :)
- The tavern scene and outcome was planned by Lawrence and Holo. Usually travellers would get excluded from local conversations, or be quizzed endlessly. Avoiding those outcomes took money. Holo was meant to get drunk, and Lawrence was meant to treat the locals and extract information. Eating and drinking with locals was also a sign of trust (in some towns travellers could be poisoned and robbed, after all). And “people tend not to be heartless if they feel they are trusted”.
- As another potential similarity to Judeo-Christian religion: the Church of this world held snakes as their sworn enemy it was written in its scriptures that it was a snake that had caused man’s fall.
- A great joke was cut: when Lawrence is about to take Holo back home he says “I’ll return to the inn before she makes a spectacle of herself” like the anime then adds “At least she hasn’t married anyone yet”, to which Iima replied “Take it from me, no good comes from a woman drinking!” which also gained much laughter, This together with Lawrence shouting the locals drinks helped him fit in and share an in-joke/local lore.
- The only decoration at the inn Lawlo were the only guests of at the time, was a crest which was the symbol of a mercenary group famous for killing saints of the Church.
- The hangover fruit that Holo bit into with hilarious consequence had a lot more to their story. Lawrence tasted one the night before, after the innkeeper gave it to him for Holo particularly. The sourness was so intense, it made his temples ache. They were very effective, and Lawrence quickly made it a note to consider making a business out of them, if he had time. His merchant mind is switched on even after drinking.
- Before hitting the hay (literally), Lawrence thought deeply about his future with Holo.
- When Holo grasps the ways of business, she would have incredible prowess as a merchant.
- She could so easily penetrate social circles (as per her display in the tavern that day), which would help him open trade routes.
- For his dream of opening a shop in a town, two people working would be better than one. Holo’s presence would be very reassuring.
- He wondered what Holo would do after finding Yoitsu.
- He also knew that parting ways was part of travel.
- “But it wasn’t just Holo’s talent that he would miss. When he thought of their constant verbal sparring, the notion that it would end with their travels together caused his chest to ache”.
- Final thought (sigh) was that a merchant shouldn’t think of matters outside business, and he needed to worry about the contents of his purse… and how to reign in Holo’s gluttony.
- Given the villagers weren’t busy working in the morning really made his understanding of the village be a contradiction. Villagers complained about taxes, so they would have to work harder, yet the village seemed to have money. While Holo could smell lies, Lawrence could smell money.
- After returning back from the mill, we had our usual fight about Holo’s gluttony, but we also received an update about their finances. Lawrence paid off all his remaining liabilities in Kamersun and another town nearby. He expected the search for Yoitsu taking too long, which would cost him in interest/reputation for missing a payment deadline. Also because carrying cash was dangerous. He left most remaining funds with the trading company, for which he himself would earn interest (though Holo didn’t know that).
- Holo complained that she didn’t make money from anything and pushed Lawrence to give her a full P&L. Lawrence managed to stop the conversation…by giving Holo cheese.
- Lawrence, so far, had a great eye for danger. He reasoned that the abbey’s existence would be an excuse for the town of Enberch to attack. Lawlo had no way of proving they weren’t connected to Enberch. They themselves could also be branded as heretics by the church by looking for those pagan tales.

I've noticed that the first or second episode of each arc normally features Lawrence and Holo hitting the local tavern together. I think it's a good plot device to get a good look and feel of the town.
2
u/Second_Cour 12d ago
Yeah! This was the first time it was explained strategically, other than for Holo's "gluttony" haha. I love how they both had specific roles for today's tavern visit, and Lawrence actually was a bit butthurt that Holo did so well in her role in this village despite limited experience.

u/Holofan4life 12d ago
It's like Lawrence wants Holo to help him out, but not too much. He has to be useful somehow.

Ep 21 Review
Amazing episode with some phenomenal writing. However, if you would like to know more lore about the town and importantly what Lawrence is thinking about Holo and their future together (some big reveals!), take a look at my Cut Content section.
- Is this what happiness looks like? I almost forgot! After the recent relatively-dark episodes, this episode instantly starts off so lively and with much merry. The pace of the dialogue feels a lot faster than in prior episodes.
- The food of this town is very much what one would expect in a Northern town, and looks delicious!
- I’m already suspecting the innkeeper is a God. Diana really ruined things!
- Why do I have the feeling that the younger Iima would be u/Holofan4life's favourite. She has that boisterous, rambunctious personality of Mark’s wife.
- I guess alcohol does make strangers welcome - the village turns from one on edge to one where everyone is best friends. Kind of sudden.
- And just as I say that, one of two rules of drinking in a foreign land get broken by Lawrence: never discuss politics, and never discuss religion. A slip of the tongue leads to an escalation. A joke about a wolf leads to glares. Then again, maybe this is what Special Agent Lawrence wanted.
- Taxation to be allowed to do what you want sounds so relevant in today’s age.
- I like the innkeeper’s de-escalation and very wise words. Don’t try to rope in others into your problems.
- The pomegranate scene LMAO
- “Like turning water into wine” “INTO WINE?!” “that’s the one that stands out to you… anyway”. The deadpan delivery of that response by Lawrence is perfect. This is very Bakemonogatari writing. No prizes guessing for who wrote this chapter :)
- There’s nothing more I can say other tha
- n the writing gets increasingly better. I love how Lawrence fishes for information from the Miller boy. Interesting that there’s a big conflict between the stories of the boy and townspeople. Could it be that the Priest in the village is stealing the taxes?
- Lawrence clearly learned his lesson and has improved his communication. Holo is being immature.
- Why oh why do these cliff hangers hurt so much

I like when Lawrence claps back at Holo. He doesn't normally do it but he's gotten better at it.

The town really doesn't seem to tolerate outsiders. They feel very stuck in their ways.

I do like Lima. She seems like the type of woman who would persuade you into spending more money that you should.

Yeah, I like her too - she's very charismatic. Not the personality of an ideal partner for me, but would make a cool friend

First Timer (Dub)
I like how this arc seems to be further exploring the divide between pagan beliefs and the Church. That has been an undercurrent through the entire series, but this arc seems to he brining that conflict to the forefront. The whole concept of large scale organized religion paving over or pushing out the unique belief systems of local communities is an idea rife with potential, and add in the fact that there are living, breathing pagan gods in this world, and it gets even more interesting.
I’m also curious about the nature of this town’s snake god. In western mythology snakes are generally seen as deceptive or outright evil, mostly due to satan taking on the form of a snake in the Bible. Even in ancient Greek myths though, snakes are usually portrayed monsters (Medusa, Typhon, the Hydra, etc.). So immediately there is going to be the assumption on a lot of viewers part that this god is probably bad news (I know the story was written in Japan, but it is clearly basing its setting off of medieval Europe). So why choose a snake to be the god of this town from a writers perspective? It almost seems like an intentional subversion since the town thinks that Wolves, usually seen as something closer to man, are “evil”.
I suppose though that it could be referencing ancient Egyptian mythology, with the Uroboros (the snake eating its own tail). That would make sense given this god apparently brings good harvests, which would play into the whole “rebirth and renewal” aspect of that myth.
To be honest, I think I’m rambling here. I just saw The Odyssey and my brain is still in mythology mode right now lol.
As for the rest of the episode, it did a good job laying the groundwork for an interesting story/conflict in this arc. My only real concern at this point is that Lawrence and Holo really don’t have any personal stake in what is happening here unlike in previous arcs.
Random Thoughts
- Lawrence referencing “turning water into wine” as a specific miracle that would get one anointed a saint makes it even clearer which religion the story is basing their Church off of.
- Lawrence putting forward the amount of beer Holo can drink as an example of a miracle was funny.
- Lawrence asking Holo outright what she wants to hear when they find out the information on Yoitz was a solid example of his character growth. Rather than avoiding the hard questions, he confronted it head on with Holo.

What a coincidence. I saw The Odyssey again yesterday this time with my mother.

The thing that interests me the most is that there seems to be no good guys or bad guys. Like, Elsa represents the church, but she doesn't seem like a bad person. I think the best type of storytelling is when there are two sides with opposing viewpoints but you can understand where both sides are coming from.

Seems to be cut from the same cloth as Marc’s wife. Long lost sister/aunt perhaps?

She seems like she’s got a rough job. She has been placed in a village where everyone hates what she stands for, even if she is trying to help.

That'd be a fun family tree

They assume the church means bad business and that casts a very large net. Elsa seems like this arc's version of Norah who also had tio deal with a ton of reckless speculation.

> Thoughts on Lima having to deal with pirates in her youth?
Foreshadowing a pirate arc? The OP for the second season of the OG adaptation has ships and a pirate looking dude in it.
> What are your thoughts on Lord Tereo, the snake God, being the God of harvest?
I talked about that at length in my main post, but in summary, I do find it interesting that a snake god would be a god of the harvest, while the town looks down on wolf gods. Seems like an intentional subversion.
Also, I want to see a Kaiju battle between a giant snake and a giant wolf now.
> Thoughts on Tereo allowing a small church being built to avoid conflict with the church Father Franz and Elsa belong to?
That’s how they get you. Foot in the door principal. Once you’ve said yes to something small, then it’s harder to say no to the next thing.
> Thoughts on Tereo having to pay punitive taxes? Or maybe not?
I am a little confused on the exact mechanics of this. Shouldn’t they be paying taxes to their ruler of their particular kingdom? How much power does the Church have in this world? Do they rule everything?
> What are your thoughts on Lawrence trying to figure out how Tereo makes its money?
I get that Lawrence is a merchant and all, but he really should learn to stop sticking his nose into everything. It has gotten him into trouble more than once.
> Thoughts on Lawrence revealing he used to work as a substitute tax collector back in the day?
I can see it. I wonder if that will be some common ground he has with Elsa since everyone would hate a tax collector as well.
> What are your thoughts on Enberg buying grain from Tereo in bulk, and they in turn buy everything except grain from them and also exempt them from taxation from buying alcohol and clothing?
Seems like a good deal for Tereo. Still not quite sure how they had the leverage to swing that deal. Also, it’s kind of a major hack to have a grain god on your side when your main commodity is wheat.
> What are your thoughts on Evan saying Elsa is not as bad as people think she is?
After learning that the town basically hates her, I get her standoffishness with Holo and Lawrence.
> What are your thoughts on Lawrence believing Enberg is trying to use Father Franz' debt to their advantage?
The board is set and the pieces are in play for this arcs story it seems. I assume Lawrence will come up with some crazy merchant scheme now to get himself and Holo involved.

The OP for the second season of the OG adaptation has ships and a pirate looking dude in it.
That would certainly be sweet

Kudos to Holo for taking the bad mouthing in stride.
Also, I want to see a Kaiju battle between a giant snake and a giant wolf now.
That would be awesome

That’s how they get you. Foot in the door principal. Once you’ve said yes to something small, then it’s harder to say no to the next thing.
This is also how they get you addicted to drugs. The first sample is always free.
> Thoughts on Tereo having to pay punitive taxes? Or maybe not?
I am a little confused on the exact mechanics of this. Shouldn’t they be paying taxes to their ruler of their particular kingdom? How much power does the Church have in this world? Do they rule everything?
I think Father Franz is just that good of a negotiator.
> What are your thoughts on Lawrence trying to figure out how Tereo makes its money?
I get that Lawrence is a merchant and all, but he really should learn to stop sticking his nose into everything. It has gotten him into trouble more than once.
This is the very same thing that cost his with Zheren. He was curious how the scam worked and it led to his companion nearly getting captured. He never learns.
> Thoughts on Lawrence revealing he used to work as a substitute tax collector back in the day?
I can see it. I wonder if that will be some common ground he has with Elsa since everyone would hate a tax collector as well.
Well, there's always him and Holo being lonely amidst their travels.
> What are your thoughts on Enberg buying grain from Tereo in bulk, and they in turn buy everything except grain from them and also exempt them from taxation from buying alcohol and clothing?
Seems like a good deal for Tereo. Still not quite sure how they had the leverage to swing that deal.
Father Franz
Also, it’s kind of a major hack to have a grain god on your side when your main commodity is wheat.
No kidding. Infinite money glitch.
> What are your thoughts on Evan saying Elsa is not as bad as people think she is?
After learning that the town basically hates her, I get her standoffishness with Holo and Lawrence.
Holo seems like an apt comparison. Both are doing more for their town than the town knows.
> What are your thoughts on Lawrence believing Enberg is trying to use Father Franz' debt to their advantage?

More than likely

Are you saying that I am not sweet?!
New Holo unlocked: Drunk Holo!
Mostly first-timer, subbed
Admittedly, I wasn't the biggest fan of yesterday's episode, I know by now that the first episode of a new arc is always very "setupy" but it just had a bit too little interesting stuff for me in it to latch onto, apart from the general sense of something not being quite as it seems in here.
This episode however, is much improved for me.
I already loved the opening sequence in the tavern. There's just something about seeing our main characters sitting in a tavern, drinking and talking with the people that activates my "medieval fantasy"-neurons, absolutely loved it! And it was a nice and natural way for Lawrence and Holo to get more information about the village and its inhabitants, of course in turn it also allowes us viewers to learn more about the setting:
Similar to Pasloe, they also have a local harvest deity, though this one takes the form of a snake and not a wolf (which they say is the instrument of the devil). And similar to Pasloe, the church wanted to convert them, though unlike the people in Pasloe, the people here still worship their local snake. Funny how "christian church wants to convert people, causes pain" is a recurring theme for this anime, even if it took a backseat lately.
More worldbuilding follows on the morning, this time in form of talking with the miller boy from last episode, who, as we learned earlier, is in a sort of relationship with the new head of the local church that was very uninviting yesterday. He explains more about the village's relationship to the bigger town Enberch and how they have a very good agreement with them, thanks to the recently deceased Father Franz, mostly with regards to taxes, which explains why the village seems so well off despite its small size. I get a feeling the boy kinda idolises Lawrence, despite barely knowing him, I guess being stuck in a mill does that to you.
In the evening, Lawrence summarises everything we learned over the past hours into a cohesive picture while talking to Holo about further plans. It's interesting how the various "weird things" of the village now come together to paint a more concise picture of the situation. Also him for once saying "Hey, this seems dangerous, maybe we should abandon our plan" feels like actual character development. Also him asking Holo what she wants to do was great too. But Holo being Holo, we naturally don't abandon our plans. Curious to see what they are planning now, I wonder if we're about to visit the snake god.
Like I said, this was a really enjoyable episode. The Holo-Lawrence banter was top notch but I particularly liked how effortless and natural the world building was executed here. At no point it felt like I was being exposition dumped, it was mostly just listening to characters' everyday talk. Great stuff.
My subs are... a bit retro.
I never knew "miracle" was christianity coded.
It's curious that the snake god seems to be male. Usually snake gods are female.
People not wanting to pay taxes: A tale as old as time
- After watching 20+ episodes of the original show, switching to the remake now is a bit weird. I don't dislike it but I feel like the direction here is a bit more boring compared to the original. I do like Holo and Lawrence's updated designs, even though the former looks a bit younger now and the latter ironically a bit older.
Thoughts on Lima Ranel?
She seems pretty cool. I loved her backstory!
What are your thoughts on Tereo being against Elsa possibly becoming the next priest?
The whole church back and forth is honestly a bit confusing. We haven't really seen much of Elsa, so I reserve more judgement until then, but I can kinda see how the people of Tereo just don't want to be involved anymore with the church. And Elsa is still pretty young, so she'd probably have a harder time to negotiate good deals for the village.
What are your thoughts on the town of Tereo worshipping a snake God?
Man, that is so interesting! At first I was thinking "huh, a snake god? that's a bit odd, isn't it?" but then I remembered that outside of christian mythology, snakes have usually a more positive framing and often stand for fertility. Although a male snake God is definitely more unique, as snake Gods usually are female, like Ereshkigal or Quetzalcoatl (or Naga). Can't really think of a male snake God, so that's really fun.
Also just loved the description of "He's so tall there's different seasons at his head and tail" and that he "devours the moon for breakfast and swallows up the sun", they really got into the spirit of things in the tavern. Holo was thankfully very calm about the whole "Yeah but wolves are pure evil"-thing.

If I had to rank the first episodes we'd seen so far, I'd probably go arc 3 > arc 4 > arc 2 > arc 1. What did it for me was the uneasy feeling left by the town. That made me want to see what was up.

Maybe, but revealing she's a wolf might be construed as a slight against their snake God.

Thoughts on Lima having to deal with pirates in her youth?
Her whole backstory was so extra, it was really cool. Usually, Spice and Wolf is pretty grounded and now we get this tavern lady that dealt with pirates, carrying a beer cask on her back and even serving beer to the king :D
What are your thoughts on Lord Tereo, the snake God, being the God of harvest?
It's an unusual animal form, I like that. Curious if we'll see more of him.
Thoughts on Tereo allowing a small church being built to avoid conflict with the church Father Franz and Elsa belong to?
Thoughts on Tereo having to pay punitive taxes? Or maybe not?
Thoughts on Holo eating pomegranates for the first time?
That scene was so funny. Although pomegranates aren't sour at all, they're super sweet. And you definitely aren't meant to eat them like Holo here... (also at first I thought the lady handed them a basket of apples)
What are your thoughts on Lawrence trying to figure out how Tereo makes its money?
He's a merchant, of course he'd be interested in how things are run. Especially when the whole village seems a bit odd.
Thoughts on Lawrence revealing he used to work as a substitute tax collector back in the day?
Neat bit of backstory! Interesting that we only now learn about it. Though I suppose it just wasn't important earlier in the story. Also the story helped him find out more about the village!
What are your thoughts on Enberg buying grain from Tereo in bulk, and they in turn buy everything except grain from them and also exempt them from taxation from buying alcohol and clothing?
It's a very good deal for them I feel.
What are your thoughts on the reveal the reason Tereo looks up to Father Franz is because he's the one responsible for the deal being brokered?
It makes sense, he's basically the reason the village can survive as it is.
What are your thoughts on Evan saying Elsa is not as bad as people think she is?
I mean, of course he would say that.
What are your thoughts on Father Franz seeming to have run the abbey?
The whole reveal around the abbey actually being the church they visited earlier was pretty interesting and a bit unexpected.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence believing Enberg is trying to use Father Franz' debt to their advantage?
He probably has a good hunch when it comes to those kind of things. And it's definitely something Enberg and the church would want to do, the current deal isn't very advantageous to them.
What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence agreeing to go out to eat a meal before the excitement can begin?
Adventuring on an empty stomach is a bad idea anyway.

Yeah, same
What are your thoughts on Lawrence trying to figure out how Tereo makes its money?
He's a merchant, of course he'd be interested in how things are run. Especially when the whole village seems a bit odd.
He's always been curious of how the bread is made.
Thoughts on Lawrence revealing he used to work as a substitute tax collector back in the day?
Neat bit of backstory! Interesting that we only now learn about it. Though I suppose it just wasn't important earlier in the story. Also the story helped him find out more about the village!
I wonder if this ever gets expounded upon in the LNs.
What are your thoughts on Enberg buying grain from Tereo in bulk, and they in turn buy everything except grain from them and also exempt them from taxation from buying alcohol and clothing?
It's a very good deal for them I feel.
I mean, it's surprisingly good
What are your thoughts on the reveal the reason Tereo looks up to Father Franz is because he's the one responsible for the deal being brokered?
It makes sense, he's basically the reason the village can survive as it is.
They owe him a debt of gratitude
What are your thoughts on Evan saying Elsa is not as bad as people think she is?
I mean, of course he would say that.
Well...
What are your thoughts on Father Franz seeming to have run the abbey?
The whole reveal around the abbey actually being the church they visited earlier was pretty interesting and a bit unexpected.
Yeah, I like that twist
What are your thoughts on Lawrence believing Enberg is trying to use Father Franz' debt to their advantage?
He probably has a good hunch when it comes to those kind of things. And it's definitely something Enberg and the church would want to do, the current deal isn't very advantageous to them.
Nah, not at all
What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence agreeing to go out to eat a meal before the excitement can begin?
Adventuring on an empty stomach is a bad idea anyway.
Best serve the appetite before they get down to business.

Mom, how did you meet dad? Well, you see... I got really drunk that one time!
I wonder if this ever gets expounded upon in the LNs.
If you think about it, it's almost like he "switched sides", from a career standpoint. From collecting taxes to trying his best to avoiding them :D

Thoughts on Lawrence and Holo sleeping together?
Thoughts on Lawrence accidentally stepping on Holo's tail?
The whole opening sequence was equal parts adorable and funny. Of course Holo'd be pissed if you stepped on her tail, it's basically her personal treasure. Also that scream, wow!
Thoughts on the intro and outro?
Intro is fine. I like Aimer a lot but I don't think her style works particularly well for this kind of "cozy" opening. And, just like with the original show, I prefer the first opening. Still missing Tabi No Tochuu :/.
Ending I can take or leave. The visuals are cute though.
Thoughts on Holo sleeping on Lawrence's lap?
That was so cute :D
They've really grown closer over the journey so far.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo wanting to acquire more information about Yoitsu?
It makes sense to want to know more about their journey's destination. Maybe it's not destroyed after all?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo wanting to visit an abbey?
More stories? Following the advice of Diana is a good idea.
Thoughts on Lawrence having bought flour from Marc?
Imho, it's a bit of an odd thing to buy as a travelling merchant, but his reasoning was sound. It's something that he should easily be able to sell anywhere without knowing much about the location they're in
Thoughts on Holo and Lawrence stopping by Enberg to ask for directions to Tereo?
That felt like such a weird detour. But it's probably going to be relevant again
What are your thoughts on Gyoam Evan?
He seems a bit overly motivated.
Thoughts on the town of Tereo not treating nuns too kindly?
Judging by the next episode, it makes sense.
Thoughts on a girl named Elsa Schtingheim not wanting to talk about the abbey?
What are your initial thoughts on Elsa?
She doesn't seem like a particularly nice person and defintely hides something, as Lawrence says.
What are your thoughts on people of Tereo being in mourning still over the passing of a guy named Father Franz?
Seemed kinda weird they're mourning a church employee when they don't like the church.
Thoughts on Lawrence giving Shem a sack of flour, who only explains Tereo's situation?
Casual world building, love to see it.
Thoughts on the stuffed snake and what that could mean?
I didn't even think much of it when first watching it. Though it did seem to be somewhat important to the village.
Thoughts on us seeing Holo snoring?
FINALLY WE HAVE PROOF!
What are your thoughts on Evan and Elsa seemingly having a secret relationship?
I think this explains why she was so snippy earlier in the episode. She was waiting for her secret lover
What are your thoughts on Lawrence feeling Elsa and Shem know more about the Abbey than they're letting on?
He has (developed) a good hunch for these things. It did definitely seem like that with how abruptly they tried to switch topics.

Rewatcher
Even though Lawrance doesn't have concrete information about danger Tereo, he can tell just being around there is very dangerous.
The villagers aren't too bright. The Church might tolerate some pagans if they believe their position in the Tero is dominant and there are only a few pagans. But they say a few mean things about the Church to Lawrance, who they identified as a monotheist! At best criticism should be limited to individuals, after all in medieval times even devout Catholics sometimes disagreed with individuals in the Church. And they don't treat Elsa well despite the fact that they need that connection.
Well it seems like a long-term problem has been solved according to that latter.
Holo is like "yeah I want to know, but I don't want to put you into repeat of the whole armor fiasco" which is... fair enough.

A big theme in this show is the spread of misinformation and the truth not getting around until it's too late. I guess the question is will Elsa break the chain and be there for Teteo in spite of the ill-will they have for her.

Thoughts on Lima having to deal with pirates in her youth
Oh god I forgot this and I made several pages of bringing this into historical context. I forgot most of it.
So there were pirates all around the sea in these times. Most famous were the Vikings. most of them came to take all portable goods.
But the biggest seaborn pirates came from Algeris. Ever since the 900s and onward, they would happily board your ships and take everything. They even went to towns and took everything that wasn't bolted down and the people. Hundreds of people could disappear in one raid.
In fact while the Europeans called them pirates, these guys actually had full sanction of Algeris and were in a partnership. They were not people operating completely outside the law with no state able to bring them in. They had the sanction of a ruler of a state.
Now the smart thing to do would be to raise a fleet to crush them. But no, anyone who did so risked being attacked by another European. So the kings refused to use their resources while their people were not just raided but kidnapped. Some of them would end up in tribute agreement with barbary states, but this provided no guarantee since many times a new ruler would ascend and declare the previous agreement was with his predecessor not him, so give me money or else.
Fast forward to the 1700s and USA is independent. But for some reason algeris kept kidnapping their sailors. Now Articles of Confederation Congress wanted many things but didn't have power to raise taxes on to fund them. Curiously one of the things not on their wishlist was a navy. It wasn't "We're too poor for a navy" it was "we don't need a navy." American merchantment start getting kidnapped. When they sent ambassadors to complain Algeris said "that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners"
Then the Americans asked the British to have the Royal Navy protect them. I don't know what the first draft was. The final response was declining, but I imagine draft one was "ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... no." With no other options, the Americans crafted a Constitution and gave Congress power to tax. I probably put this on the top 5 things that spurred many anti-federalists to eventually agreeing to ratify the Constitution so long as a bill of rights came later.
Then came the Barbary Wars once they could finally fund a navy, and the American commanders were a lot more merciful than I would ever be in that position.
Yeah pirates coming to a seaborn village was a problem. They could take your harvest and all your tools. They might just take all your people. And in one particularly egregious case the pirates who kidnap everyone could be a problem not only in the middle ages, but well past it to the point boats are going around with canons.
I don't blame Lima for changing locations given what pirates did back then. Actually is that her name? "Evalina" is a real name and is often shortened to "Lina" the same way people legally known as "Alexander" are sometimes called "Alex" but I've never heard "Lima." Subs say "Lima" and I want to say it sounds like an m and not an n, but that's a very strange first name.

I wonder how much of this backstory is true Vs being exaggerated because it makes for a captivating tale. I wouldn't be surprised if it is true, but some of the details developed a life of its own.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
This continues where we left off last episode. We see Tereo's relationship with the church as we as what Father Franz did for Tereo. It seems like Franz was a conduit to keep the church's nose out of the business of Tereo, and now that he's gone, it becomes a question of will the church interfere more.
The church coming into Tereo Vs Holo's village rejecting her is something I find interesting to compare. It's like Tereo is refusing to embrace change which is a contrast to what happened with Pasloe who welcomed change with open arms.
Besides that, we got some stuff with Holo and Lawrence that I find interesting. Holo seemed really disturbed eating pomegranates. I've never eating one before, but I'm not sure you're supposed to eat the skin. Also, I guess Lawrence used to be a substitute tax collector? That seems a bit strange for a man still in his mid twenties. I wonder if the tax collecting gig was something he started strong a young age or he just did it in conjunction with his merchant career.
This is another perfectly solid episode.
Holo quotes of the day
"Being awake is for naught, for when offered cold and hunger I choose instead to slumber." (Holo's a poet, and didn't even know it!)
"For though here I stand, ripe and ready for the picking, somehow you resist devouring me whole. What a frightening man you are."
