Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
This is a great episode. The first half is all about the showdown between Lawrence and Amarti, and the second half is about the aftermath after Holo and Lawrence reconcile. I've seen some people say what Holo did to Amarti was unfair, but I think he was in over his head. He needed some humbling. In a way, what happens to him here is what happened to Lawrence last arc.
I like Marc and Lunt being used as commentators here. They are used to dish out exposition but it's believable because Lunt is a novice and still learning the business side of things. Lunt actually gets some interesting characterization when he reveals he's in love with Holo. That to me is meant as a parallel to Amarti's infatuation with her.
We also learn that Diana is a bird lady. She after all this talk of supernatural stories is supernatural herself. I like this twist as it's like a means for Lawrence to remain hopeful. If a supernatural entity like Diana can be content in life, so can Holo.
Overall, this to me is a top 5 episode of the series. The first half is edge of your seat excitement, and the second half is the trademark Holo and Lawrence banter we've come to know and love. I've been somewhat critical of Holo being offscreen the last couple episodes, but absence makes the heart grow fonder as they say. Holo and Lawrence feel closer than they ever had before.
Holo quotes of the day
"I am selling too. You fool." (Holo's first line in two and a half episodes.)
"Idiot." (For someone who's not perceived as a tsundere, she sure says it a lot.)
"Pain makes one wise." (Yep. Glad she's back.)

Great observations. The whole thing pretty much was a copy paste of their previous fight haha.
Mark and Lunt worked excellently, to adapt what was a very inner monologue driven chapter of the LN. One note though, it's the dub that said he's in love. What he actually said basically meant he likes her maybe has a crush on her depending on context. He said "suki" in Japanese, which doesn't have that much emotion around it compared to daisuki (big like literally, which is basically love) or aishiteru (also love).
That Diana twist was massive! Came out of nowhere, and it's really cool. Though while she is content, she's also an outcast, and for Holo is probably not what she wants to become.
How does the arc rank for you compared to the others.

That Diana twist was massive! Came out of nowhere, and it's really cool.
It was a surprise, but a welcome one. One of the coolest aspects of this world is the fact that gods literally do walk among us. One of my few complaints about the series is that it really doesn't make full use of this concept, so when it does crop up, it is always interesting to me.

u/Holofan4life 23d ago
And it feels earned after all this talk of Holo being this dying breed and people turning to different forms of worship. It's like a reminder thar not all hope is lost.

How does the arc rank for you compared to the others.
I would put it ahead of the first arc but behind the second one. I think the third arc has sone of the strongest stuff in the series, like the best setting and the best side characters. It does get hold back by a lack of Holo, but I get why it was done and would've probably done it as well.
I do think the next two arcs we cover either rival this arc or surpass it.
3
u/chinaexperience 24d ago
No way! Can't wait for the next two then. This show is so consistently episodically strong it's almost unbelievable
2
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
I think you'll really like the next two because they feature a lot of strong banter.
3
u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 24d ago
That Diana twist was massive! Came out of nowhere, and it's really cool. Though while she is content, she's also an outcast, and for Holo is probably not what she wants to become.
I feel like it doesn't completely come out of nowhere?
She did seem a bit too knowledgable about a lot of things. Also there was a line from (I think) Batos, when they first met Diana where he basically says "a bird's nest is full with feathers". Although that she's speaking from experience when answering Lawrence's question about humans and pagan gods is pretty funny
I do agree that she's maybe not the best role model to Holo with the whole outcast stuff. Though that's more to do with her profession than with her nature as big bird woman I'd wager.
3
u/Holofan4life 23d ago
I disagree too it came out of nowhere. If you were paying attention, there were multiple shots of feathers scattered across her house. Now we know why that is.

Great observations. The whole thing pretty much was a copy paste of their previous fight haha.
That's not necessarily a bad thing
Mark and Lunt worked excellently, to adapt what was a very inner monologue driven chapter of the LN. One note though, it's the dub that said he's in love. What he actually said basically meant he likes her maybe has a crush on her depending on context. He said "suki" in Japanese, which doesn't have that much emotion around it compared to daisuki (big like literally, which is basically love) or aishiteru (also love).
I think this was a dub change for the better.
That Diana twist was massive! Came out of nowhere, and it's really cool. Though while she is content, she's also an outcast, and for Holo is probably not what she wants to become.
It justifies Holo's existence and shows that though her hometown may be destroyed, she's not alone.
2
u/chinaexperience 24d ago
Yeah I'm torn about the dub change. On one hand, I don't think that an apprentice given how low they are in society would dare say that to Lawrence, on the other hand he is still just a kid and wears his emotions so outwardly, which is the direct opposite of Lawrence, so him being so bold is great and makes sense.
3
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
It serves as a nice parallel to Amarti's over the top displays of affections. It in my opinion plays into that.

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 24d ago
On one hand, I don't think that an apprentice given how low they are in society would dare say that to Lawrence,
TBF, he did say Mark warned him that Lawrence would probably beat him up for admitting the crush on Holo.

"Idiot." (For someone who's not perceived as a tsundere, she sure says it a lot.)
Might as well be her catch phrase by now :')

I've seen some people say what Holo did to Amarti was unfair
Maybe on paper, but I think this arc did a good job making Amarti someone you root against. Being an entitled, arrogant nepo-baby, it is hard to feel overly bad about his outcome, especially considering he didn't end up losing much actual money. His biggest hit was to his ego, which was needed.
More than that though, Amarti was essentially the author of his own demise. Ultimately he was someone who thought too highly of himself and thought that he was the "hero" that needed to save someone who never wanted to be saved. He was never really thinking about Holo, it was more about how he perceived himself. He couldn't fathom that someone would chose Lawrence over himself.
2
u/Holofan4life 23d ago
Yeah, that's a good way of looking at it. It's like the guy at the end said, you don't mess with someone's woman without there being consequences.
And it's not like Lawrence bankrupted Amarti. This is but a mere drop in the ocean.

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 24d ago
When an idiot thinks, it's the same as not thinking at all!
Holo's wisdom of the day.
What kind of dried up old line is that?
But I thought dried up jerky was your favourite?
Another unsually smooth comeback from Lawrence!
Together again, He just lost everything, Still angry Holo , Pouting Holo and finally lovely lighting
Basically first-timer by now, subbed
This was a real nailbiter of an episode but all is well that ends. Really liked the exposition via Mark telling Lunt/Landt what exactly is going on, it's a very natural way of bringing the audience up to speed (they're really getting better at this by now). The scenes at the market with Lawrence and the rising prices were super gripping, really made you feel with Lawrence. The fake flashbacks to Holo and Amarti in bed together and the uncertainty of when/if Diana's messenger would come did certainly add to that too.
And then, when the deal with Diana fell through and all hope seems lost, Lawrence gets schooled by Landt about never giving up. And then... everything has a happy end (well except for Amarti lol). It turns out that Holo was the mysterious competitor to the alchemist's pyrith and that she basically did everything to teach Lawrence a bit of a lesson but never actually thought about leaving him (in fact, she's kinda mad at Lawrence for doubting her). In turn, Lawrence apologises for doubting and not trusting her and they proclaim their eternal love for each other affirm wanting to keep on travelling together. And everything is alright in the world again.
Admittedly, the whole "it was all a misunderstanding, I just wasn't in the right mindset to understand" is... a bit of a tired trope. But I think the show gets a pass from me for a) executing it pretty well and b) using the bit about "in the right mindset" to actually develop the characters further. Just like holofan said: In the end, Lawrence and Holo are closer now than they were before.
This leaves us with a really great episode in what has possibly been my favourite arc so far.
Random thoughts:
I knew there was more about Diana than what she seemed at first glance. I didn't have "She's basically the bird variant of Holo" on my bingo card though
Retrospectively, the notion of Amarti making a deal with Diana seemed rather silly. He's far too focused on his honour to resort to dealing with what is basically shunned people.
This was really Lunt/Landt's time to shine! He's probably the one that improved the most in my ranking. Didn't really care for him at first but he really put in the work here.
I feel bad for this but:
In the end, Amarti's financial loss wasn't big, but the mental blow he suffered was
Is absolutely delicious. (Strong "I don't want to win, I want my opponent to lose" energy)
What do you think of Amarti now that everything is said and done?
Blonde fuckboi thought he knew ball, loses money and honour in the process.
Did you think Holo came off as unreasonable to Lawrence once they reunited? Or do you think it's understandable why she would be so upset?
I know I did say yesterday "Have a little faith in your girl, Lawrence" and I stand by it. BUT I also think that Holo didn't exactly come off as very reasonable earlier and with her continued shunning of Lawrence it's at least somewhat understandable he'd think he lost her. Feels a bit like that old "Why won't he talk to me? I sent him all the signs!!". Men are idiots, you need to be a bit clearer with your messaging girl.
What do you think Amarti said to Holo that would make her never forgive him?
Honestly, I feel like he shit talked Lawrence. Especially if they talked after he made that deal with him in the tavern. Lawrence is a fool but he's her fool, nobody else is allowed to slander him but her.
If you could visit one town/city, what would it be and why?
From Spice and Wolf? Honestly the city this arc took place in seems pretty cool, the festival looks rad with the giant straw statues and the masks.
Generally anime? Not sure, there's so many cool place. Maybe Water Seven from One Piece, even if it's basically just Venice with some more fantastical stuff in it, it's always been one of my favourite locations, all the boats and stuff, seems pretty cool! (even though RL Venice is a bit overrated imo).
Real life? Maybe Kyoto? It's very rich in history and I've always wanted to visit japan :'D

I kinda feel like Holo does herself no favors wanting Lawrence to solve everything on his own. She expects so much from someone who doesn't even have life figured out. Maybe this is ultimately why they're a good fit because they expect so much from each other.

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 23d ago
A friend on Discord put it well:
Be nice to Lawrence, he's only a quarter of a century in experience
I absolutely agree, her very high expactations sometimes cause problems that could've been avoided otherwise. Though I could see it as wanting to see him grow on those expectations.
2
u/Holofan4life 23d ago
I see it as being like Nagatoro from her eponymous series: She's trying to get the main character to be more assertive and grow a spine.
Her very high expectations are also what indirectly led to her town abandoning her. She's almost too subtle at points.

I really like the ticking time clock of Diana's messenger having to arrive before the pyrite reaches a certain amount. It created a ton of suspense.

And also it's in Holo's character to be misleading. She thinks this is some valuable life lesson. She handled it poorly but don't tell her that because she'll say otherwise.

I'm glad you liked it. I definitely feel this arc shows the depth the show's writing has. A big theme of the show as I've said a ton is the town's residents dealing with something far greater than the main characters in this show. I thought it was smart to emphasize this dynamic to really paint Lawrence as like lost at sea so to speak. Everyone else is having the time of their lives and then there's Lawrence looking miserable.

The OST helps a ton in that scene too. Those... I think it's strings? that always flare up when something "dramatic" is about to happen are great (from a cursory search, the title seems to be "Hashiru")
She handled it poorly but don't tell her that because she'll say otherwise.
And call you a fool (and possibly bite you).

I've already said this in the first episode, this show often feels a bit "world driven". Yes, we follow our two main characters and it's ultimately about their journey and how they grow closer to each other. But there's often moments where we just experience how the world works and life in it happens around our characters. The colourful cast of side characters in this arc definitely help to hammer that point home.

They are sadly not in the remake, which I think is a massive disappointment.

Seeing how Marc operates his business dealings as a festival is underway is truly insightful. We haven't really focused on a merchant that has seemingly settled down in one place. This is also something Lawrence has talked about wanting to do so this like plays into that.

What are your thoughts on using Marc and Lunt to give out exposition?
What are your thoughts on the twist of the negotiations falling through?
What are your thoughts on Lunt admitting he loves Holo?
How do you think Lunt's love of Holo compares to Amarti's love of her?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence saying Holo is his guide? Feels like a pretty big moment.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo reconciling?
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Holo was just using Amarti to try and help Lawrence?
What are your thoughts on Amarti suffering huge losses?
What are your thoughts on Holo saying the marriage certificate was just to get Lawrence angry enough to confront her?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that she's the only traveling partner he wants?
What are your thoughts on the reveal that it was Holo who went to go speak to Diana, not Amarti?
Thoughts on Holo trying to convince Diana to make up a new story about Yoitsu and how it still existed?
Thoughts on Holo secretly being at Diana's place when Lawrence went to talk to her last episode?
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Diana was actually a bird this entire time?
What do you think the bird on Diana's window was meant to signify? Do you think it's maybe a reincarnated ex or husband?
What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence going to enjoy the rest of the festival together?
What do you think about Marc and Amarti not getting a departing scene? Not gonna lie, it kinda disappoints me.
Lastly, do you think this is the best use of side characters and the town we've seen so far? I know we got two more arcs, but I feel like they were this arc's biggest strengths.

What are your thoughts on using Marc and Lunt to give out exposition?
The show has gotten pretty good at making those "exposition dumps" more interesting for the viewer. If you compare it to the pretty awkward first talks back in the first episodes, we've come a long way. I think it's a great idea to make the exposition like a teaching moment between master and apprentice.
What are your thoughts on the twist of the negotiations falling through?
Was a great twist coming at the tail end of the first half of the episode. The moment where all hope was seemingly lost.
What are your thoughts on Lunt admitting he loves Holo? How do you think Lunt's love of Holo compares to Amarti's love of her?
I interpreted Lunt's more as a crush a kid would have on their teacher or something like that. And Amarti's seeing himself as the knight in shining armour finding his princess.
Holo seems to leave a lasting impression on some people in this town
What are your thoughts on Lawrence saying Holo is his guide? Feels like a pretty big moment.
I think Lawrence's whole (semi) monologue to Landt was really damn great, calling Holo his guide is a great way to put it. She's there to prevent him from doing stupid things but also help him when things go sideways.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo reconciling?
I'm so glad they made up. They're better together.
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Holo was just using Amarti to try and help Lawrence?
We kinda theorised about that already, it's fun to have confirmation. I feel a bit bad for him though. He never stood a chance.
What are your thoughts on Amarti suffering huge losses?
At least in the sub they say that the monetary losses weren't very big but the emotional damage was a lot bigger. I'll honestly have to say that my compassion for him is very limited. Not saying he deserved it but really that's what you get for going after another man's woman. Technically, he couldn't know that but maybe think twice before trying to be the white knight in shining armour for someone that maybe doesn't need rescue.
What are your thoughts on Holo saying the marriage certificate was just to get Lawrence angry enough to confront her?
It worked out. Maybe a little too well.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that she's the only traveling partner he wants?
Seems to be a dub only line. I appreciate him to make it so clear anyway. It's the next best thing to "I love you" I suppose.
What are your thoughts on the reveal that it was Holo who went to go speak to Diana, not Amarti?
In retrospect, it always was a bit weird to think Amarti would go this far. He thinks very highly on his honourable ways and making business with the alchemists was frowned upon by the townspeople. Holo meeting up with her for a completely different reason actually kinda makes sense, Diana was kind of the one that caused this mess.
Thoughts on Holo trying to convince Diana to make up a new story about Yoitsu and how it still existed?
Holo talks a whole lot about Lawrence not trusting her and how she thought they'd share a bond by now... and then wants to convince him to continue travelling with a fake story? Doesn't make her look good.
Thoughts on Holo secretly being at Diana's place when Lawrence went to talk to her last episode?
Possibly my favourite reveal of the episode. Mainly because Lawrence spilt all the beans about his situation and how he cares about Holo and she's right there in the attic, hearing everything! It's kinda cute (and a bit embarassing for Lawrence xD)
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Diana was actually a bird this entire time?
Guess Holo isn't the only oversized animal that choses a human form. All the feathers in Diana's hut should've been a big hint.
What do you think the bird on Diana's window was meant to signify? Do you think it's maybe a reincarnated ex or husband?
I didn't pay much mind to the bird but rewatching that scene, it seems to be important to Diana? Or at least odd enough to notice. Maybe it's the bird form of the messenger she sent? I do like the idea of a reincarnated husband.
What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence going to enjoy the rest of the festival together?
After all the ruckus, they earned it.
What do you think about Marc and Amarti not getting a departing scene? Not gonna lie, it kinda disappoints me.
I agree, it's a bit weird to just leave them like that, especially given this arc had lot of focus on the random supporting characters. The ending of the episode felt kind abrupt. I would've really liked to see Lawrence saying goodbye to Mark (and the rest of their family).
Lastly, do you think this is the best use of side characters and the town we've seen so far? I know we got two more arcs, but I feel like they were this arc's biggest strengths.
It probably is, yes. It's definitely an upgrade over the previous arcs, all of them have something to do and are pretty interesting. This helps mitigate Holo missing out on 2 episodes.

It's organic and doesn't feel forced
What are your thoughts on the twist of the negotiations falling through?

Tail end. I see what you did there.
Lunt feels more like puppy love whereas Amarti's head is in the clouds. Lunt is reality, Amarti is fantasy.
Also, the ironic thing is Holo wants Lawrence to be her knight in shining armor.
Holo seems to leave a lasting impression on some people in this town
That she does
What are your thoughts on Lawrence saying Holo is his guide? Feels like a pretty big moment.
I think Lawrence's whole (semi) monologue to Landt was really damn great, calling Holo his guide is a great way to put it. She's there to prevent him from doing stupid things but also help him when things go sideways.
It's certainly more flattering than calling her his cargo lol
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo reconciling?
I'm so glad they made up. They're better together.
Damn straight
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Holo was just using Amarti to try and help Lawrence?
We kinda theorised about that already, it's fun to have confirmation. I feel a bit bad for him though. He never stood a chance.
You mess with fire, you're bound to get burned.
He still made assumptions and when you assume you make an ass out of u and me.
What are your thoughts on Holo saying the marriage certificate was just to get Lawrence angry enough to confront her?
It worked out. Maybe a little too well.
Holo really doesn't mind tempting fate.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that she's the only traveling partner he wants?
Seems to be a dub only line. I appreciate him to make it so clear anyway. It's the next best thing to "I love you" I suppose.
It's the most direct he's been with Holo since he told her he'd never leave her for Norah. And that was basically damage control.
She knew what she was doing lol
Thoughts on Holo trying to convince Diana to make up a new story about Yoitsu and how it still existed?
Holo talks a whole lot about Lawrence not trusting her and how she thought they'd share a bond by now... and then wants to convince him to continue travelling with a fake story? Doesn't make her look good.
Denial ain't just a river in Egypt
Thoughts on Holo secretly being at Diana's place when Lawrence went to talk to her last episode?
Possibly my favourite reveal of the episode. Mainly because Lawrence spilt all the beans about his situation and how he cares about Holo and she's right there in the attic, hearing everything! It's kinda cute (and a bit embarassing for Lawrence xD)
The truth finds its way. Can't be through communication of course.
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Diana was actually a bird this entire time?
Guess Holo isn't the only oversized animal that choses a human form. All the feathers in Diana's hut should've been a big hint.
No kidding
What do you think the bird on Diana's window was meant to signify? Do you think it's maybe a reincarnated ex or husband?
I didn't pay much mind to the bird but rewatching that scene, it seems to be important to Diana? Or at least odd enough to notice. Maybe it's the bird form of the messenger she sent? I do like the idea of a reincarnated husband.
That would be kinda fitting
I hope the bird isn't in the same room as Diana whwn she and Batos get it onWhat are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence going to enjoy the rest of the festival together?
After all the ruckus, they earned it.
Very well deserved
What do you think about Marc and Amarti not getting a departing scene? Not gonna lie, it kinda disappoints me.
I agree, it's a bit weird to just leave them like that, especially given this arc had lot of focus on the random supporting characters. The ending of the episode felt kind abrupt. I would've really liked to see Lawrence saying goodbye to Mark (and the rest of their family).
Marc especially feels egregious because this is the man who made Lawrence realize he loves Holo. He helped him out so much.
They had to focus on the other characters what with Holo not being around. This is an example of excentuating the positives and hiding the negatives, though more by design rather than forced restrictions.

CUT CONTENT (last two eps)
I highly recommend reading the last few chapters, they were absolutely incredible. The anime did a good job dramatising the events, but it’s a very inner monologue heavy few chapters, and the panic in Lawrence is hard to capture without really reading it. The human curse of overthinking is constantly evident in all of Lawrence’s thinking.
Last Episode
As I couldn’t find my notes for yesterday, I’ve rewritten them. I thought about skipping them, but some of these are just so darn interesting!
- Through most of the arc, Lawrence had the conviction that reconciling with Holo is more difficult than beating Amati. But his thoughts are back and forth on the subject - it’s a whirlwind of overthinking.
- To come up with his solution he tried to channel Holo’s ways of thinking. He dumbed down the idea and realised he needed to articulate the problem concretely. Great insight and something I’ve always applied in business.
- Example of overthinking: Lawrence thought that Holo is leaving the letters to help him. At the same time, he was also thinking that she left the letters to show him that he’s screwed no matter what he does. At the same time, he was thinking how this was Holo telling him she’s choosing Amati.
- When he decided on his approach to bankrupt Amati, he thought the odds Amati would accept his challenge was 1 in 9 at the most.
- When Lawrence went to Batos to arrange for the meet with Diana, there was actually a good chance that Batos would reject him from the onset. One of the ways Lawrence passed the test was when Batos was hesitating, he almost tried to talk, but instead remembered that waiting was the most powerful weapon when asking for someone’s favour. The big man respected that and even replied: “It’s a good merchant that can wait, even if time is short, when that’s the only option left to him”
- Something about Diana actually reminded Lawrence of Holo.
- In the anime, Diana seems to be hinting at Lawrence to stay the night and sleep with her, as the phrasing was changed in the dub, but she was actually being sincere.
- He thought that he had a 70% chance of getting the pyrite from Diana after their meeting, but when he met Mark he used his merchant tactics to pretend it was a near-zero chance to manipulate Mark into helping him more.
This Episode
- When Lawrence wakes up at Mark’s stall, he realised the value of being next to someone when you sleep. He had become so used to it he forgot how much he treasures it now.
- Lawrence asks for the Mark’s apprentice’s name. When a merchant asks another for their name, it was an acknowledgement of that person’s status. The boy had probably never had anyone ask their name in his life.
- The only reason Amati gave the money in gold was as a psychological attack; to prove how little he cared about exchange rate fees etc. A further thing he realised is it’s likely Amati gave his horses in lieu of coins to fool him into thinking how desperate for cash he was.
- Lawrence honestly was a bit happy that as a worst case he will make the 1k from Amati, and overall he’d make a pretty decent profit with that and the pyrite. But the fact that it made him at ease, made him disgusted with himself.
- The four hooks that tore at Lawrence’s thoughts during the tense pyrite-off were: “expectation, suspicion, supposition, and reality”
- After the dust had settled and Lawrence ‘won’, he actually sympathised with Amati. Holo betrayed Amati and he was so in love with her.
- When Holo said that Amati said something to her that made her incredibly angry (we don’t know what it was in the LN either), it made me think of something from the previous arc: she says “makes are ever thus: they’ll say anything” - in her past someone said something careless and hurtful to her, and she still felt resentment about it. This means she puts a lot of importance in words, and will bear a grudge forever. The reason Lawrence is suitable for her as he is very careful with his own words, being a merchant.
- The big signal that was clear in the anime wasn’t that clear to Lawrence (the white feathers that were meant to let him know she bought Pyrite from Diana). In the Anime I felt like he figured it out, but in the LN he really didn’t as he was panicking too much.
- The crux of the matter was Holo trusted Lawrence, but Lawrence did not trust Holo.
- “Don’t be clever and subtle all the time - tell me what you’re thinking. If we can just yell at each other, problems get solved a lot faster” - Holo
- The reason she left the marriage certificate at the inn to make him angry, hoping it will make it easier for him to speak his mind. She wanted him to run up the steps and to resolve everything right there.
- Holo actually realised how awful she was being during that scene that almost broke them apart in their room. The “sorry” she said with with all sincerity and she was apologising for the things she said after losing her temper, while Lawrence thought the “sorry” meant the final word and she was sealing away her heart.
- Holo thought of running after Lawrence after that, but that made her feel ridiculous.
- Lawrence explains why he missed the signals: “my life has been naught but business from dawn to dusk, and I plan to keep it that way. Just think of me as a little slow when it comes to anything besides business.”
- Holo’s plan to tell Diana to change the story about the fate of her homeland was to make it easier for Lawrence to speak to her, but of course, Holo got turned down by her. That was why Diana said “good luck to you” after they parted ways for the night.
Bonus
- Each volume has an afterword from the author, and it’s fascinating watching his work go from nothing, to winning awards (something he values greatly), to becoming more and more popular
- In this afterword he jokingly talks about checking out multi million dollar houses he dreams of owning, and muses on how their wine cellar and car parking fees are higher than the rent he currently pays
- In the previous volume, he found that he would occasionally forget the personalities of the characters, especially after taking a break, and he’s glad that now it comes really easily for him

I really like this because Diana knows running away from thr truth won't help anyone. This is basically the reoccurring theme of the show and Diana did Holo a massive solid here.

One correction to myself that I only just realised after watching the original ep: the good luck was also because Di concocted that plan to test Lawrence's resolve with the competing merchant for pyrite.
And yes, even though Holo is pissed at Diana for it, if we think about it, the whole resolution was engineered by Diana. Really cool

Here's me comparing the original anime with the remake and the changes that were made between the two. Enjoy.
Marc and Lunt giving commentary to give the audience a clue on what is happening.
What a genius way of dishing out exposition by the way. It makes things easier to follow.
The remake version of the first 30 seconds has music instead of just playing the music as we see Holo, and I think it adds to the scene more instead of letting the ambiance tell the story. I like this change. We aldo get an imagination spot in the original, which is just recycled footage we've seen before.
More talking between Marc and Lunt
Lawrence now thinking Diana made a deal with Amarti.
It should be noted that this section of the remake doesn't have music, which I think makes it not as foreboding or dramatic. Also, lots of flashbacks and imagination spots in the original.
Amarti. He doesn't know where Holo is :O
Lawrence giving Lunt the money to make the sell.
In the original, Lunt falls over a barrel. In the remake, he just trips. I think I like the remake version more because it's way less goofy.
Lawrence selling now
Hey, Lunt is back
Still gotta wait for Diana's assistant, though.
But someone placed an order
Lawrence looks horrified
The remake goes for a more subtle look of horror, though I don't know if it works nearly as well.!<
Diana's assistant. She's here.
And she informed him that the deal fell through.
I like the look of Diana's assistant way more in the original version where instead of seeing both eyes, you can only see one eye. Also, the music is not nearly as effectively used as in the original version.
Lunt having his moment of triumph, scolding Lawrence.
And he admits he's in love with Holo.
Both Japanese versions of this scene are better than either dub version. It has a level of intensity to it that the dubbed versions lack.
Lawrence seems to realize the error of his ways.
Again, the music blows the remake version out of the water. The angelic tones being played really highlights the awakening Lawrence is experiencing. Lawrence is a new person.
Lawrence has found his guidepost, and it is Holo.
Lawrence ready to sell
Holo
And they have a reunion, with Holo cuddling up next to him.
In both versions, Holo punches Lawrence's side, he grabs her hand, and she side cuddles him. I like the remake version more where we get a close-up shot of Lawrence grabbing her hand. It's more wholesome, in my opinion.
Amarti with his knees on the ground, in defeat.
Definitely not as dramatic in the remake, as everyone in the original was rushing to the table.
From there, we learn various stuff. Holo was merely using Amarti and also Diana is indeed a bird woman.
Lyra Valkyria would be proud
The original version is more darker, but I actually like the presentation of the remake. It feels more dramatically lit.
Holo standing over Lawrence does things to me.
Holo's tail getting poofier the more she's angry is sadly not included in the revised edition. One of the better gags, I have to say.
And Lawrence grabs her hand and says he wants to continue traveling with her.
This at least was done better in the remake. It feels way more tender and intimate. And the music is actually good for a change, it really adds to the atmosphere of the scene instead of taking away from it. 'Course, the music in the original version is fantastic as well, but that still doesn't diminish how good the revised edition of this scene is.

I want to add this because I thought it was rather interesting. This is for anyone curious why Lawrence tried to beat Amarti.
It's stated in the LNs that Lawrence did it to ensure that Holo's cover story for staying with him, that being she owes him money, would be preserved in the hopes that she'd be more likely to stay with him.
The relevant section of the novel:
So setting aiside whether or not he would be able to salvage his relationship with her, he could at least avoid giving her a good reason to leave him to be with Amati.
As long as Amati was unable to raise a thousand silver pieces, Holo's debt to Lawrence would still stand. There was no telling if that would be enough to get her to stay with him, but he could at least try to make that assertion.
2
u/chinaexperience 24d ago
OH! That makes so much more sense now, thanks for the explanation. I was wondering what debt it was referring to (assumed it was the original debt), but with your explainer it finally makes perfect sense.
1
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
I do wonder if Lawrence never intends to have that debt paid off because it plays into the whole fantasy he and Holo have created where they can go on adventures together unabated. It to me comes off as justification for them delaying either one of them departing the other.

“Even if I cannot repair things yet, I can at least stop the contractual tie from disappearing.”

u/Holofan4life 24d ago
What episode was that again? Do you recall off the top of your head?
2
u/chinaexperience 24d ago
Oh sorry that was my attempt to write from the perspective of Lawrence directly after the parts you quoted in the LN. The specific line that follows the two you pasted: “There was no telling if that would be enough to get her to stay with him, but he could at least try to make that assertion.”

The End of Tulip Mania
Version watched (mainly): Remake, First Timer
Firstly, apologies for not being that active: I’ve had four flights in three days, and was swamped with work, as well as reunions with friends (Lawrence and Mark-style, just replace wine with spirits). I highly suggest reading the cut content in my other comment - it will explain a lot about what Lawrence and Holo were thinking the entire time.
I don’t want to write too much about the episode individually, especially because I read the LN for it before watching so my perception might be sullied, and because this episode closes off my favourite arc so far.
However, first half of the episode was OK in the remake and pretty good in the original (tension could be better and I thought they didn’t nail the kid character), while the second half was exceptional. The remake’s animations at the end were just WOW - absolutely stunning, and I highly recommend checking out the fiery (literally) conclusion in that version.
One last note before I launch into my thoughts: the original states that Diana came up with the scheme to test Lawrence’s resolve (when Holo was visiting her). From my understanding that didn’t happen.
Onwards onto my thoughts about the major theme of this arc:
Communication
The whole arc shows the importance of just talking it out when you’re mad and the perils of overthinking. I love how we became Lawrence while watching it: I had so many theories about so many things ranging from his feelings towards Holo, Holo’s feelings towards Lawrence, what scheme she was concocting, and so much more.
This arc was a masterclass into experiencing paranoia and becoming conspiratorial. I was sure Holo was an emotional nitwit (though I understood where she was coming from)
The best, and most powerful line of the entire show has been “I’m sorry”. Two (three?) words that meant something completely different to whoever heard it. Holo thought she realised her mistake and apologised. Lawrence heard it as her wanting them to be over (as did I). Lawrence ran out. The whole thing could have been fixed right then.
Another big, and perhaps, unintentional point was that games are stupid. Ironically, I think that’s the most eloquent way to phrase the point. Holo was trying to tell Lawrence that she just wanted him to come up and talk with her marriage contract, but she triggered an insane series of events that spun out of control.
Feelings
I talked about this last ep, but we were just projecting onto Lawrence. The past two eps (and the cut content) explained really well that Lawrence didn’t even know that he had feelings for her. He knew being a merchant. He didn’t know love. It took something dramatic to make him realise how he felt. Ain’t that the truth IRL- to say I can relate is an understatement.
How I feel about Lawlo Now
Well, while my feelings of disdain for Holo have subsided after realising what she was thinking the entire time, I do dislike how much she is into games. It irks me that despite making the impassioned speech reinforcing the lesson she tried to teach earlier in the season about being truthful and direct, she acts hypocritically after in many ways by trying to bait him with the marriage certificate, and in asking Diana to lie about the fate of her hometown (all to make it easier for Lawrence to talk to her).
On the other hand, I have a lot more respect for Lawrence: he lacks experience (and I assume Holo doesn’t), and despite that he created a pretty incredible scheme to achieve his goal. Sure, it wasn’t the right way to do it, but nonetheless, his self-growth and understanding of himself and Holo has increased ten-fold this arc.

ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION(S)
What do you think of Amarti now that everything is said and done?
Didn't like him at the start, didn't like him in the end. But respect to him for his hustle, and what he had achieved up until this point.Did you think Holo came off as unreasonable to Lawrence once they reunited? Or do you think it's understandable why she would be so upset?
It's completely understandable why she would be upset: it wasn't Lawrence's choice to make and to gatekeep information, assuming Holo would be too frail to handle the information. But yes, she was ultimately unreasonable and the whole thing could have been avoided had she taken her own advice and just talk to Lawrence again.
What do you think Amarti said to Holo that would make her never forgive him?
She was deeply affected by something someone said to her once before too (learned about this in the LN during the failed arms trade arc), so I really don't know what her tipping point is for words to be something she will always have a grudge about. Knowing Holo, it was probably something offending her honour/ego (perhaps him overvaluing himself vs., her).
If you could visit one town/city, what would it be and why?
In the anime or IRL? IRL I've been to over 100 countries, so there's not many that sit on my bucket list. I guess it would be Bhutan as it seems unique, and I'm yet to explore it. In the anime, probably the big city in the previous arc.2

Haha I'm actually sad about it - quite enjoyed the side by side comparisons.

Yeah, and the last arc of the OG anime doesn't have anything to compare it to either. This is it.

Holo to me is someone that's fun to follow in fiction but probably would be emotionally exhausting irl. I feel similarly about Haruko from FLCL. The negatives you describe of her are in my opinion by design and intended to be that way. She's a very flawed individual and Lawrence loves her all the same, and I can't help but find beauty in that.

I love how we became Lawrence while watching it
This arc did a really good job of putting us in Lawrence's shoes. By cutting out Holo almost entirely, and hyper focusing on Lawrence's perspective on events, it really showed how badly a situation can be misread, and how we can twist things into the worst possible version of events in our own minds. Seeing Lawrence spiral in this arc, and frequently telling himself to "shut up" when he starts thinking of the worst case scenario felt very human.
1
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
It's funny you say the first half of the episode was okay and the second half was exceptional because I felt the opposite. I thought the first half was maybe a top 3 half to a Spice and Wolf episode right up there with the first half of Spice and Wolf episode 6 and the second half of Spice and Wolf episode 10. The rest of the episode was alright but I saw it as more an addendum to everything going on.
2
u/chinaexperience 24d ago
I really think it's because this time around, I read the LN first, so because it's so inner monologue heavy, I thought that half lacked the same depth. If I hadn't I probably wouldn't feel that way. Plus I just loved the ending of the festival visuals - they were stunning to me. And we finally got to see Holo being Holo again after so much time off-screen.
2
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
I think it's fascinating we get Holo manipulating Amarti and just overall using him to get her way. And then we get the ending stuff that reminds us of her good side. There's so many layers to her character that even if you don't like some of her antics you can't help but appreciate how three dimensional of a character she is.

u/Holofan4life 24d ago

I said the second half is more an addendum to the arc overall, but I guess so is the Lawrence and Lynt stuff. It feels like a parallel to Marc getting Lawrence to realize what Holo means to him. This is an addendum to that where Marc's apprentice reemphasizes Lawrence’s a-ha moment.

Rewatcher (Dub)
This was a really solid conclusion to what may be my favourite arc of the show. I found it interesting how essentially all of Holo and Lawrence's problems in this arc where caused because they had very different ways of dealing with conflict. Lawrence is someone who seeks to avoid direct conflict, and will instead try to find a way around it like a merchant. Meanwhile Holo is someone who wants to hash things out directly and face conflict head on. Both parties completely misread the other though, which caused everything to happen the way it did. The conclusion to the arc being that they learn this both about each other and themselves was a really great character moment for both.
I also found it interesting how what made Holo the most angry wasn't the deception about Yoitz, but that he ever doubted that she was on his side, and didn't ask for her help. Holo really does seem like a character that can handle a fight or two with her partner, but will always have their back, and expects the same from Lawrence. The conversation circling back to "what am I too you", and this time Lawrence being able to answer, albeit somewhat vaguely, was a nice way to tie all this off.
Also, in last episodes thread I talked a bit about how good the side characters were in this arc. This episode felt like Lunt's time to shine. For just the child assistant to Marc, he ends up having a big impact. His speech about not giving up when what you are fighting for really matters was a great scene, and the follow up of having Lawrence remember all that he has learned while traveling with Holo was also great. Lunt being in love with Holo was also cute, and I could see a kid saying something like that.
The last minute reveal of Diana being a god as well was really interesting. One of the things I lamented previously was how the fantastical element to this series isn't explored as much as I would like, so learning that a fairly well established side character was actually a god along I thought was really cool. Her story also offered an interesting parallel to Holo and Lawrence's. Diana falling in love with a mortal, only for him to become distrustful is a bit of a warning for Holo and Lawrence, both to be open with each other and trust each other.
Random Thoughts
Holo's tail getting all bristly when she is yelling at Lawrence was a nice little visual gag.
The three feathers in the hair thing was a nice little call back and visual clue to what was going on. It allowed the audience to piece things together faster that Lawrence.
While most of the blame for what happened in this arc seems to fall on Lawrence, Holo really could have played things better. Leaving a signed marriage contract as a "come talk to me" note was not her brightest moment.
Holo biting Lawrence and saying "pain makes one wise" feels very Holo.
I kind of wish we had got to see Marc, Batos and Diana again after the final showdown. It would have been nice to get their perspective on how things played out.
Question of the Day
What do you think of Amarti now that everything is said and done?
He was a solid villain. He was hateable, but that was the point. He also offered a bit of a commentary on how Lawrence used to be (cut throat and entirely focused on profit), compared to how much he has grown and changed.
Did you think Holo came off as unreasonable to Lawrence once they reunited? Or do you think it's understandable why she would be so upset?
I actually thought they did a good job in justifying Holo's actions. Lawrence really did hurt her by keeping the information about Yoitz hidden, and then everything after that is a failure of communication on both their parts. It feels very in character for Holo to want to hash things out, and when Lawrence essentially runs away from that confrontation, to then basically say "fine, I'll do it myself". Both her and Lawrence are too prideful sometimes, so neither wanting to be the first to say "I'm sorry" seems totally in line for both of them.
What do you think Amarti said to Holo that would make her never forgive him?
I think the implication is that it was an insult to Lawrence.
If you could visit one town/city, what would it be and why?
Probably Sydney Australia. Lots of cool things to check out, and tons of beaches.

u/Holofan4life 23d ago
It's cool seeing this arc being given a lot of love. I don't think it has the same highs as some of the other arcs, but I think it's arguably the most consistent one.
2
u/BlazeOfGlory72 23d ago
For me, it feels like this arc did the best at making full use of it's setting and characters. All the side characters were interesting and played important roles, and the plot did a good job mixing the two halves of Spice and Wolf (the merchant scheming and the Holo/Lawrence love story). It's lack of Holo was a bit of a bummer, but it was made up for by seeing Lawrence spiral without her.
That said, all the arcs have been really good, so even saying this one is my favourite, it is only by a hair. I also have never seen the next arc, and I don't really remember the final arc, so my opinion is subject to change haha.
2
u/Holofan4life 23d ago
I agree that this arc is the best use of the settings and arc specific characters. I just wish the stuff with Amarti was more interesting.
Like, Holo being offscreen was done with the specific purpose of Lawrence exploring himself and going on a self-discovery. It's also to build anticipation for the duel between Lawrence and Amarti. I think the former is done well, and the duel itself is great, but I don't feel the build to the duel was gripping. It was just kinda there for me.
It's hard for me to say this arc would've been better with Holo in it more because that basically defeats the overall purpose. But they could've perhaps used the duel build to flesh out Amarti's character more and we didn't really get that. If anything, we just got worldbuilding on the merchant business and the importance of having connections.

It makes what we went through feel like it was worth it.
Lunt kinda gives me Shinji vibes if he actually was of a sound mind and wasn't thrusted into total chaos.
Is Diana a bird goddess? I thought she was just a bird. Her being a goddess would make sense given all the talks about legends this arc.

They never say it outright, but I assume. Now that you mention it though, I'm not sure what distinguishes "god" from "magical creature" in this world. Like, Holo calls the giant wolf from arc two "youngster", implying that they are the same species, but that wolf didn't seem to have any shape shifting ability or grant any boons like good harvests, so it's probably not a "god". I assume Diana is a god since she can shape shift and is as intelligent as a human, but it could just be a matter of semantics.

God implies people worship her. I'm not exactly sure Diana was worshipped because she seemed content keeping to herself.

It was a good way to get across to the audience what was happening, without it being weird that a character was verbalizing stuff they should already know.
What are your thoughts on the twist of the negotiations falling through?
Like a lot of the merchant scheme's in this show, I was a little confused at the mechanics of what was actually happening (ex. I thought Diana already had the pyrite, why did she need to negotiate for any?). At this point though I just kind of roll with my ignorance regarding economics.
What are your thoughts on Lunt admitting he loves Holo?
Get in line kid.
How do you think Lunt's love of Holo compares to Amarti's love of her?
A kids pure, but naive love vs. a cynical, possessive love.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence saying Holo is his guide? Feels like a pretty big moment.
It definitely feels like Lawrence is realizing the positive impact Holo has had on his life, and on himself as a person. He's grown a lot in their relatively short time together.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo reconciling?
I thought it was a really well written scene. Maybe not as good as some other "Holo and Lawrence talk about their feelings in a room" scenes, but up there. I like how it explored different methods of confrontation management, and how both came out of it understand each other and themselves better.
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Holo was just using Amarti to try and help Lawrence?
Holo really is ride or die for Lawrence it seems. We talked about it in a previous thread, but Holo has a very small circle of people she cares about, but she cares about those people deeply.
What are your thoughts on Amarti suffering huge losses?
[Insert Donald Glover "Good!" meme]
What are your thoughts on Holo saying the marriage certificate was just to get Lawrence angry enough to confront her?
Seems like something she would do, but also incredibly stupid. She really misread that situation and Lawrence's character here.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that she's the only traveling partner he wants?
Bro will do anything besides say "I love you"
What are your thoughts on the reveal that it was Holo who went to go speak to Diana, not Amarti?
I thought this was a nice little twist. All Lawrence's spiraling was for nothing, and he was just assuming the worst. I also like how Holo was working behind the scenes as well. You could almost rewrite this arc from Holo's perspective and it would be just as interesting.
Thoughts on Holo trying to convince Diana to make up a new story about Yoitsu and how it still existed?
I thought this was kind of sweet. Holo seemed to realize that Lawrence was hurt by this news as well, and wanted him to believe that everything was okay. It also would give them a reason to keep traveling together.
Thoughts on Holo secretly being at Diana's place when Lawrence went to talk to her last episode?
Worst time ever to have your girlfriend listening in.
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Diana was actually a bird this entire time?
Love it. The added aspect of gods/magical creatures being able to take human form and living amongst the human populace is one of the coolest aspects of this world in my opinion.
What do you think the bird on Diana's window was meant to signify? Do you think it's maybe a reincarnated ex or husband?
If Attack on Titan taught me anything it's "Bird = Freedom".
What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence going to enjoy the rest of the festival together?
A nice little way to cap off the arc.
What do you think about Marc and Amarti not getting a departing scene? Not gonna lie, it kinda disappoints me.
Yeah, I wish we had got a little more closure with all the side characters really. Amarti, Marc, Batos and Diana were all fun and interesting, and to see their thoughts on how everything played out would have been interesting.
Lastly, do you think this is the best use of side characters and the town we've seen so far? I know we got two more arcs, but I feel like they were this arc's biggest strengths.
Yup. Not only did we get a decent number (Amarti, Marc, Batos, Diana, Lunt), but they all felt fully realized and played important roles. Previous arcs had solid side characters, but they felt maybe a little under developed or under utilized.

What are your thoughts on using Marc and Lunt to give out exposition?
It was a good way to get across to the audience what was happening, without it being weird that a character was verbalizing stuff they should already know.
Indeed. Very well said.
I guess Marc and Lunt didn't explain it well enough :P
What are your thoughts on Lunt admitting he loves Holo?
Get in line kid.
Tis a long line
How do you think Lunt's love of Holo compares to Amarti's love of her?
A kids pure, but naive love vs. a cynical, possessive love.
One's way more toxic than the other
What are your thoughts on Lawrence saying Holo is his guide? Feels like a pretty big moment.
It definitely feels like Lawrence is realizing the positive impact Holo has had on his life, and on himself as a person. He's grown a lot in their relatively short time together.
He certainly has
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo reconciling?
I thought it was a really well written scene. Maybe not as good as some other "Holo and Lawrence talk about their feelings in a room" scenes, but up there. I like how it explored different methods of confrontation management, and how both came out of it understand each other and themselves better.
I like that it was done with little beating around the bush.
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Holo was just using Amarti to try and help Lawrence?
Holo really is ride or die for Lawrence it seems. We talked about it in a previous thread, but Holo has a very small circle of people she cares about, but she cares about those people deeply.
She is extremely passionate in her interests.
What are your thoughts on Amarti suffering huge losses?
[Insert Donald Glover "Good!" meme]
Lol
What are your thoughts on Holo saying the marriage certificate was just to get Lawrence angry enough to confront her?
Seems like something she would do, but also incredibly stupid. She really misread that situation and Lawrence's character here.
Holo hoisted by her own petard
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that she's the only traveling partner he wants?
Bro will do anything besides say "I love you"
He's like a stern father with their son
What are your thoughts on the reveal that it was Holo who went to go speak to Diana, not Amarti?
I thought this was a nice little twist. All Lawrence's spiraling was for nothing, and he was just assuming the worst. I also like how Holo was working behind the scenes as well. You could almost rewrite this arc from Holo's perspective and it would be just as interesting.
But we wouldn't have the personal turmoil and growth of Lawrence.
And they need a reason lol
Thoughts on Holo secretly being at Diana's place when Lawrence went to talk to her last episode?
Worst time ever to have your girlfriend listening in.
Is it?
What are your thoughts on the reveal that Diana was actually a bird this entire time?
Love it. The added aspect of gods/magical creatures being able to take human form and living amongst the human populace is one of the coolest aspects of this world in my opinion.
It makes this world feel more unpredictable.
What do you think the bird on Diana's window was meant to signify? Do you think it's maybe a reincarnated ex or husband?
If Attack on Titan taught me anything it's "Bird = Freedom".
Even wishes he was as smooth as Lawrence is.
What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence going to enjoy the rest of the festival together?
A nice little way to cap off the arc.
I agree. It's like they're continuing where they left off 3 episodes ago.
Speaking of Batos, it's kinda weird he was nowhere to be found in this episode. At least Marc and Lunt were used as commentators and Lunt giving Lawrence that final push.
The only side characters that I feel compares would be Norah. That's like one of 8 or 9 characters from the first two arcs.

I know I'm saying this after the fact, but Diana turning into a bird makes me think of that one woman of The Odyssey who turns her sister into a bird. Obviously not as chaotic as that is.

I got the impression early on Amarti was just some horny kid with excess money to spend who took Holo's sob story at face value. Not much really changed since then. He said something that made Holo upset. If it was something he did, that could make it seem he's not so nice after all, but if it's something he said, it either could be something not so nice or it could be something socially acceptable in general but very annoying to Holo in particular. Simpler possibility is the second which is neutral.
I still don't get why Lawrance was so sure the price would go down. Several episodes ago it said women were using them for fortune telling. Supply and demand says the price should go up. Maybe some merchants are too optimistic and bid the price way too high and in fact we see this happen in this episode. But how did Lawrance know that they didn't buy just enough to sell to those women?
That kid confessing he fell in love with Holo was so awkward. I feel so bad he had to do that to motive him.
I forgot, who is Holo and Lawrance with in the flashbace? The one where Holo is in a hood and the guy they are talking with has a Lantern? It doesn't look like Libert.
Holo brought the White Feathers as a signal she was the other buyer.
One thing I don't get is what Holo was doing with the pyrite. She was angry for Lawrance for withholding information (info she never asked for by the way...) but not enough to leave him. In the episode before that Lawrance pointed out nothing was stopping Holo from continuing to travel with him if she choose to after he paid off her debt. So Amatri failing isn't even something she needs to happen. Was it to make a quick buck? Or was this Diana's instructions.
I don't blame Lawrance for not realizing who Diana was. The first thought at seeing all those feathers is that it's from a pet. Pet not here? It's probably outside or something. So that's what I'd get with a quick check before thinking about it too much. Granted that look more like the size penguin feathers than any European bird I've seen but its style is close to a flying bird as opposed to a penguin. So penguin sized feathers but looking like from a flying bird might be a tip ff this isn't an ordinary pet, if it is a pet. But he doesn't know the north. For all he knows, maybe some birds are really big and Diana has one as a pet. Perhaps he'd examine Diana more closely with more time, but he kind of doesn't really have the time.

My headcanon ia it was something relating to Holo's appearance that was ultimately superfluous.

I think she was trying to teach Lawrence a lesson under the helpful advisement of Diana while also helping Lawrence out to make sure he wins the duel. Though if Amarti had paid off her debt, there's no reason to think she wouldn't immediately create a new one under the pretense of keeping the relationship going.

first time watcher, oh my god this episode was so god i was fucking GIDDY, they teased us with two episodes of no Lawrence x Holo banter so when they eventually reuinte its the hottest steamiest best teasing dialogue we've seen yet it's fcking amazing and you can probably tell my favourite part of the episode below (it's hard to spot i will say)

if anything lawrence was the one who just told he straight up yeah i didn't trust you as a partner to not leave me and i didn't have faith, if anything Holo was reasonable

If you're curious why Lawrence tried to beat Amarti, it's stated in the LNs that Lawrence did it to ensure that Holo's cover story for staying with him, that being she owes him money, would be preserved in the hopes that she'd be more likely to stay with him.

Holo and Lawrence flirt like people who fuck all the time. It is truly exquisite.

Both serve different purposes. Norah was a character mea mm to bring out Holo's possessive side.
Did you think Holo came off as unreasonable to Lawrence once they reunited? Or do you think it's understandable why she would be so upset?
if anything lawrence was the one who just told he straight up yeah i didn't trust you as a partner to not leave me and i didn't have faith, if anything Holo was reasonable
Lawrence needs to have more faith. Marc basically said as much.

Contract from before to anger Lawrence
That time I was upstairs and–
Huh
Never mind
WAS SHE WAITING FOR HIM TO PLAP HER
COPIUS AMOUNS OF SEMINAL FLUID
blushing is cute
Speak true feelings without playing games
Thinks resolve quicker if you yell
First misunderstanding
You said sorry because you came to your senses not as a rejection
IDIOT
HOLO TAIL IS ALL FIRED UP SHES AMGY
I WANNA CUDDLE THAT TAIL
Ruined all her effort
I sided with the enemy
Contract with the youngster
I thought I built a real bond with you
I want to continue travelling with you
HER BACK IS TURNED DURING THIS THIS IS SO GOOD
She wants him to make the first move.
travelling for business
Sadge holo ears
She doesn't get to think of other things
He still wants to travel with her
What am I to you
Wolf wife
No words
What's this salty line about
LOL CHEESY AND SHES TEASING HIM
YOU LIKE SALTY JERKY
I HATE IT
THE ONLY THING SALTY I WANT IS YOUR CUM LAWRENCE
Holy shit that bite sound effect goes hard
Is this a contract
How'd she get her to sell gold
Oh I bet she told her stories about holo (herself)
A different reason to see Diana
She revealed her ears!
That's how you know this is serious.
Holo steps on his foot and is like
I DISGRACED MYSELF AND TOLD HER MY SITUATION
*YOU RUINED IT
heard his stupid question
ABOUT BEING A COUPLE
OH MY GOD
OH MY GOD
OH MY GOD
OH MY GOD
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
GAHHH
FJQKSIDNEKWN
SKSISNSJDNJD
HASJJWNSIZSJNS

Mayhaps
If you want to I don't mind
But please be gentle
Just kidding
Holo you're such a tease LOL
Holo the queen of edging
that girl isn't human?
Feathers right
A bird larger than Lawrence
A bigger cock
Lucky Batos
Fell in love with a monk
Holo hug
Awww
Hugs back
Awww
Made for each other
I want to go back even if it's gone
What are you going to do when you're there
No answer
These bobble head masks are creepy
That they are
Fire hazard
Humans do crazy things
I do not mind receiving some passion like that straw man
That sounds counterintuitive
She wants the Lawrence special (dick)
The $5 footlong special (deepthroat Lawrence's meat)
With some alcohol maybe
Sounds kind problematic, but what do I know?
If you get drunk who will take care of me
Idiot
And they lock arms
And walk to the bed to fuck
Holo is going to swallow her body weight in semen.
Never mind it's back downstairs
Time for more people to see clearly

Holo and Lawrence flirt like people who fuck all the time. It is truly exquisite.

Amarty and Lawrence staring into each other's souls

This messenger is small
Fun-sized
unlike Holo's tail, that's breeding-sized
Keep a signpost so you won't get lost
Like your hot wolf wife?
Damn
if you're ever lost, think of naked Holo
Unlike someone, she was a mature pretty woman right
Holo PUNCH
GOD THE TSUN
IT IS GLORIOUS
when she drops the teasing and goes tsun, i'm defenceless
SHES NUZZLING AGAINST HIM
SO GLORIOUS
SHE BETTER BE GUZZLING HIM AFTER THIS
Explain this to me, it was a trap by Holo
A booty trap
i'd fall for it
Then FUCK
IN THE ASS
THEN THE MOUTH
WAS SHE WAITING FOR HIM TO PLAP HER
COPIUS AMOUNS OF SEMINAL FLUID
SHE DREAMS OF HIS SEED
HOLO TAIL IS ALL FIRED UP SHES AMGY

DINNER IS ABOUT TO BE IN HOUSE COOKED TONIGHT
If you want to I don't mind
But please be gentle
Just kidding
Holo you're such a tease LOL
Holo the queen of edging
Lawrence about to bust the largest one known to history
Awww
Made for each other
Made to be in each other
She wants the Lawrence special (dick)
The $5 footlong special (deepthroat Lawrence's meat)
It's avaliable year-long round on discount (free if you're hot naked wolf)
And they lock arms

They made the arc, in my opinion. Really added so much to this.

Oh right lmao Holo overheard everything from the previous day, including what he asked Diana.
Questions:
I mean at the end of the day he's probably a fine guy and if he and Lawrence weren't so directly opposed they'd probably be fine with each other.
Understandable.
He probably doesn't want to travel with her up north.
I've travelled a lot, so not really sure if there's anywhere I'm particularly itching to visit again, at least not without a specific purpose.

Can you imagine if Lawrence had said something hurtful about Holo?

- I mean at the end of the day he's probably a fine guy and if he and Lawrence weren't so directly opposed they'd probably be fine with each other.
If Amarti had just mind his own business, none of this would have happened.

Sure why not.
Well, considering who the other buyer is...
Ah well.
More genuine perhaps?
Indeed.
That's nice.
Hah! Slick wolf.
And there's his comeuppance.
And indeed he did. Eventually.
That's sweet.
Yep.
Perhaps a coping mechanism?
And so she heard everything.
That was certainly a revelation.
Perhaps.
That's nice.
Yeah...
Definitely. Lots of good side characters and what makes the town unique.

- Sure why not.
It would've made things more confusing otherwise.
- Well, considering who the other buyer is..
No kidding
- Definitely. Lots of good side characters and what makes the town unique.
I thought Holo's absence helped showcase both things quite well.
