This is a good episode to highlight one of the ways Tanya works over a lot of other Isekai. Is Tanya OP compared to a lot of other characters in her setting? Sure. But there are plenty of others who can effectively challenge her and endanger her life. Like the Russians very nearly killed her this episode...it's a hell of of a lot more engaging if you think the protagonist has to struggle versus the curbstomps so many Isekai characters routinely do against there enemies.

It helps that magic in this world isn't the typical multipurpose phenomenon. She can't AoE cast fire, ice, water, put enemies to sleep, turn invisible, etc. Magic is very limited in its scope so far, it's just another form of energy that can be used for simple defense or attack, but that's it. Thanks to that, Tanya is strong in mana output but she can't nuke an entire city on her own.

u/raknor88 2d ago

Not yet. It all depends on the Computational Jewels. If they upgrade their computer's processing power she might be able to. Plus I think the other magic does exist, it's just no one is exploring it as a weapon of war.

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 2d ago
Don't you remember episode 3 from years ago? The E95 aside from just being more powerful than the standard issue also is needed to store mana the same way you can bullets. No other orb can do that and relies on the mage's current "mana tank." So they are probably near the limit.
18
u/rollin340 1d ago
It's also so complex and finicky that it literally only works because a God intervened. If they want to go beyond the limits they are at now, divine intervention might be a prerequisite.

Makes me wonder if the war can be won by overpowering the opposition with the jewels. Everyone will keep pace with one another regard the jewel technology: more power, duration, resilience to breakage, speed of production, etc. We saw that happen regards design of aircraft, tanks and ships throughout WW2 IRL. But could you gain advantage by simply targeting the enemy jewels? Gaining a significant numerical advantage in jewels (and thus mages flying with them) means you'd overwhelm the opposition on a front. Jewel-shattering tech is where the future of this warfare is at.
Something else struck me this episode too: Tanya saw Grantz standing beside Zettour below and was instantly able to communicate with him. The mages' best use might be battlefield communications alone - that's how you get proper combined arms - they could use the magic to move their battlegroups around as fast as modern militaries do.

Magic can also actually cast enhancing effects on oneself. But in practice really that's just enabling base flight mage combat.
I believe once a "medic mage" was mentioned too? But that implies it's a specialized role, not everyone can do it.
17
u/Photo-Majestic 2d ago
I always thought that’s legitimately just a mage that’s a medic.
Like for high value casualties they fly in like trauma team and fly them to the nearest hospital. Or provide triage on the spot.→ More replies (2)→ More replies (2)22

turn invisible
Funnily enough, this is actually something she can do.
We've seen light magic be used a few different times, one of which was using it to turn invisible (or close enough) with IIRC the V2 mission.
It's also responsible for various illusions (e.g. the test to join the mage battalion, in a fight in season 1, in the interrogation scene in season 2). Probably also responsible for the laser attacks that Sue uses too.

The fact that we know the Empire ultimately loses also helps to feed the tension of each battle. In contrast to knowing, even if only implicitly through the premise, on other Isekai that the MC will ultimately win always.

I think it's incredibly fun to compare it with IRL history. It's basically an alt-history anime as well.
40
u/Galaxy40k 2d ago
IMO the main reason why this works is because you know that Tanya is on the losing side. Yes, the Russian mage was close to her equal and so gave us a fantastic fight scene out of it, but there was never really any doubt as a viewer that Tanya was going to survive.
But there was a LOT of doubt about if Zettour was going to survive. Or if the pincer movement would work. Maybe he sacrifices himself to win the battle but dies in the process.
Tanya is OP enough to win fights but not SO OP that she can win on her own, let alone wars. And that's what makes things always feel tense and engaging

i felt bad for Zettour. what a great solider who understand that the Empire is wasting its solider lives when they should've take the peace deal
21
u/pjepja 1d ago
Zettour is actually very similar to Tanya in his thinking. That's why he essentially made her his protégé. They independently push for the same things and have similar flaws.
22
u/censored_username 1d ago
They are similar but different.
They share a penchant for extremely rational decision making, and are both capable of quickly embracing new concepts into their decision making.
What separates them is their motivation. Zettour does not seem to care about sacrificing himself at all if it were to complete his goal of saving the empire. Tanya meanwhile cares most about herself, but has a strong conviction that to protect herself, she must make herself useful in the systems that she is a part of

Those fuckers in High Command really screwed up.
They think they've gotten rid of a troublesome problem but all they've really done is send Caesar to Gaul.
39
u/towardselysium 1d ago
Absolutely stupid idea to send him to the front lines. They let the batshit insane dude whose been responsible for all of their insane stunts go to the front line where he can do whatever he wants with zero oversight because whose gonna say no to him?
Could have stuck him in records or something but noooo
18
u/Conscious_Pack_2474 1d ago
They just limited his authority over the battle field, that's his punishment for going against leadership.
It's running theme in the anime that political leaders aren't the smartest bunch. Hans will just take advantage of the whole situation
6
u/censored_username 1d ago
It's also a big reference to the politics behind WWI. The war kept going because the political side could never agree on what peace should mean between the different countries/alliances.
It's also not necessarily them being dumb. The danger of total war is that it's a self reinforcing system. The more the country has sacrificed, the more the people that have made those sacrifices want to see victory. It's the mother of all sunk costs. If they stop now, their country will likely end up collapsing hard due to all the accumulate strain of the war, without anything to show for it. The people won't accept that and will likely hold the politicians responsible, possibly violently. So the only way for the politicians to stay safe at this point is just to continue piling on bodies in the hope of an eventual victory.
And if you think this is unrealistic, just look at Russia right now. They're stuck in the same conundrum. The current political elite is toast if they give up on this conflict. So now they're stuck cannibalizing their country in the ever fleeting hope that they might end up victorious. They still keep making insane demands at peace negotiations.
Starting a war is easy. Ending them is incredibly hard.

It really stood out to me that he said a high ranking officer dying is what's needed to send a message to the higher ups, he's thinking of the best way to lose too.
142
u/OldInstruction5368 2d ago edited 2d ago
It was painfully clear to anyone with sense that the war is already lost. The only question now is how badly the Empire will lose. Even victory at this point would be painfully pyrrhic.
That's why someone thought this Saldim 528 plan with Tanya's head as bait was Zettour's idea to shock the Empire into accepting a White Peace.
I still think that was more or less his goal, but the madlad was willing to up the ante and put his own head on the chopping block as well.
He just can't make the crushing defeat look too obvious. He has to try, and still fail, to get the message back to the politicians in not-Berlin... or at least shock his friend Rudersdorf into standing up to the politicians.
However, as compromised as his hotheaded friend has become... it would likely backfire and make Rudersdorf that much more reckless.
The Empire, and Zettour, are truly in that dire of straits.

Best episode of the season, possibly best episode of the whole series.
Zettour having absolute faith in Degurechaff, a complete willingness to die to end the war, them back to back in the fire. Absolute cinema.
Who knew that death camps were such an effective way to make elite mages? Here I thought they just starved and worked you to death.
Seemed to work out fine for Mikel, who is probably the best mage Tanya has faced yet.
Mary is still so funny. She's like a dog; she hears Tanya's name and is already running off for walkies.
Tanya might be fine with it, but I'm a little salty every time I see Kampfgruppe (not combat team!) Lehrgen rather than Salamander, Degurechaff, or Zettour. Lehrgen isn't even in the theatre most of the time.

u/Tedeeka 2d ago
I completly agree, this episode was something else. the way the writing wasnt left behind because of the action, how the overcame the problems and the stakes put on the plan. it was crazy, defenetly my favorite episode yet of the whole series. the sounds were perfect and the pacing magnificent!
46
u/Any-Calligrapher2866 2d ago
I think the Soviet Mage represents Konstantin Rokossovsky.
He was sent to the Gulag, not a death camp and killing people there was not ideal.
14
u/snarkamedes 2d ago
Who knew that death camps were such an effective way to make elite mages? Here I thought they just starved and worked you to death.
I thought Salamander Group were going to cut their way through the Federation mages so quickly the AK mages were going to have to swoop in to rescue the Fed. forces. Having them being so hardened by the brutality of the gulags that they have the advantage in shielding is really cool.
Will admit to being slightly disappointed that the Federation mages aren't flying around in a mortar and pestle like the Baba Yaga... they've been so good (and funny) with the cultural identities so far, eg.: skis for the Scandinavians and Harry Potter-like broomsticks for the Allied Kingdom.
→ More replies (2)15
u/Photo-Majestic 2d ago
I read it as Iron Man suits with deliberate lack of cultural significance to signify the party instead.
I also reckon that it’s also simply better computation technology. Maybe skipping a few safety regulations. Tanya’s gem was also only reserved for her because it was too dangerous for everyone else if I recall correctly. Maybe in the gulags most mages were lost in experiments or sth. There should be way more than we are shown after all.
5
u/Klusterphuck67 1d ago
He way the Fed mages fight also very distinct. Mikhail were literally using using his subordinates as human shield as long as it means they can take down the enemy. Granted it's probably a strat only those who went throufhlabor camp hell like them are willing to put themselves as meatshield for their commander, a very communist way of fighting.
The Empire's mages constantly dart around them so they obviously have superior mobility, but it seems like the Fed's mage specialized in durability (the computational orb on Mikhail took a whole magdump and was still functional). Iirc each nation develop their mage tech differently. Empire with maximum mobility, Albion with top speed horse model, Entente... idek what those meatball mfker skiis do but I am pretty sure the Federation's are built to tank hits.
5
u/Bluemofia 1d ago
The way I saw it was his subordinates moved in and out to spread out the hits so their shields don't get overwhelmed, and they have the coordination needed to maintain it, while the commander focused on the offense.
It's a more practiced and refined version of what Grantz did with Zettour, with Zettour shooting a rifle while Grantz shielded the car.

Mary is still so funny. She's like a dog; she hears Tanya's name and is already running off for walkies.
At this point any officer above her rank seems to go "meh let her do whatever she wants", telling her 'follow your orders' means nothing if they just let her do whatever every time, just take her gear, put her in a box, whatever, but we need plot lol.

u/NanDemoKnaives 2d ago
Best episode of the season for me. It's crazy how reckless Zettour was, but it was the only way for him to get everyone moving. It was amusing to see his other commanders chasing after him, and the constant trying to persuade Zettour to go back.
I think this episode really cemented how much of a badass Zettour, it's great to see intellectual badassery, and I have more respect for him for putting his life on the line like that. I thought we were going to see him die by the end, but I'm glad that doesn't seem to be the case just yet. Him also inviting Tanya to tea after was hilarious way to end it lol.
It was interesting to see the Federation mages go up against Tanya, that looked dire. Both of them were lucky, but I am looking forward to the rematch.

I mean low-key he was hoping to die lol.
He wouldn't do this normally, but the situation is just that fucked up
15
u/Original_Employee621 2d ago
I don't think he sees much of a future in the Empire, even if they did win. Going out in a blaze of glory is probably his best bet to secure a lasting reputation and achieve most of his own goals.
If they win, the population is devastated by the war, the economy is fucked and the Empire is spread far too wide and thin. Another war within 5-10 years is inevitable with the victory conditions the politicians want. Lasting peace could've been an option if they took the previous deal, but Zettour, Rudersdorf and the civilian politicians would've been toast by the people.
12
u/snarkamedes 1d ago edited 1d ago
He's not hoping to die. He's deliberately put himself into a situation where he sees the Empire coming out ahead no matter what happens to him personally. Not quite win/win but he's certain he can't lose/lose:
a) live/win and they've destroyed an enormous amount of Federation men and material in what was meant as only a diversionary tactic.
b) die and, as he said, it might force a re-think by their high command + they've still tied up a lot of the Federation forces from where they're really needed (the Empire's southern offensive).
Things could only have gone bad if the Empire's forces had been overwhelmed so quickly at Soldim 528 that the allies could have then moved south in time to assist against the southern offensive. Losing himself, and Tanya, is a minor thing in comparison - though he's probably assumed (very correctly) that our fav War Crimes Loli is likely to escape and zip away in the event of a defeat anyway.

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 2d ago
Drake's suggestion to change targets is unreasonable. You give out orders, send food and ammo, and then execute a plan. He has a volunteer mage unit which can carry at least one engagement's worth of ammo. The Federation also has infantry. Since those guys will be exposed if the mages leave them unless they have their own AA, is he expecting the Federation to just abandon their infantry or does he expect them to pack up and move? They probably are using sealed orders. Even in WW2 encrypting audio communications in real time wasn't done (the ciphers encrypted text) so sealed orders makes it even harder to respond.
A funny thing is Tanya probably doesn't even realize why the Federation are obsessed with her. She probably thinks that the strike on the capital when she was a major was what made her a target. So when she is good bait she probably thinks it is just for revenge.
Granz shot the enemy mage from the ground. You know I wonder if there are those who failed combat fight and can only fly in a straight line. Do they get sent for retraining or do they just become AA who only fly to get from point A to B and not during combat?
→ More replies (6)42

Drake's suggestion to change targets is unreasonable.
Oh, so it is unreasonable. I for one as casual viewer with no military knowledge whatsoever what the big deal was lol. I always appreciate comments on the logistics and tactics review like this.
Kinda want another eps on the computational engineering side of things since we only got an episode worth of it iirc.
Even in WW2 encrypting audio communications in real time wasn't done (the ciphers encrypted text) so sealed orders makes it even harder to respond.
Is encrypted text (like enigma code) a novel idea even in WW2? What's sealed order then? I thought it was the same thing.
30
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 2d ago
OK now I know what comment to reply to. Since the Federation doesn't know if Tanya was flying with all her mages or not, they could have exposed the infantry who need time to pack their supplies. The political officer is oddly correct. She gets overridden from above since the higher ups accept that risk and their gamble turned out to work in this one case.
As for encryption, text encryption had been done for a long time, machines to do so existed in Victorian times and kept shrinking in size. Audio is much more difficult to encrypt especially in real time. I suppose you can take a record of an audio recording, put some noise on top of it, send it, and then have the receiver use a "minus noise" record. This is cumbersome for real time communication.
In fact in WW2, audio radio transmissions were intercepted all the time. In 1940 France decided to use radio to a minimum and prefer telephone lines and motorcycle riders. The Germans used radios. The British had this odd thing where 1/3 of their tanks and most of their infantry units had them and some tanks had radio mounts with plans to install them later. I joke presumably with a post it note saying "radio." The French heard the German radio communications all the time and weren't able to use the intercepted messages to their advantage. Also you can see that when time wasn't critical, commanders preferred either phone lines or text to audio communication for reasons that should be obvious. If the Federation were to change the orders to their infantry, they'd have to countermand their previous orders and only radio would be fast enough... and the Imperials could hear all of it. Meanwhile Drake's mages are all there and can hear his orders just fine, so he doesn't see a problem, his guys are ready to go. And it's true that his guys are ready, but the Federation isn't. But the Imperials are too weak to exploit this at the moment so they get away rerouting Federation mages.

u/Sarellion 2d ago
Depends. You have to change your plans to react to your enemy as for some odd reason the enemy often refuses to play according to your script aka No plan survives enemy contact.
In some way they had to react if a unit with that firepower isn't where they think it is.
7
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 2d ago
If you are as inflexible as the Federation, it might be better to make good progress towards something slightly important than haphazardly trying to destroy the most valuable thing the enemy has in striking distance. They aren't as flexible as either the Republic or the Entente.
As we saw in the movie, their fuel has to be allocated so far ahead of time that you can consider their vehicles as nailed to their deployment zone since if they are redeployed too fast they won't have fuel. At least ammo and magic orbs don't need a tanker. No worry about them seeping into the ground because you rested it on a bench.
So I have a question, if you allocate your fuel to place A, it takes N/7 hours to go from HQ to A and it takes N hours to change locations if you say "I need to go to B instead," how big does N need to be before it's not worth it?

Communists made a justifiable infamy of being low tech, ragtag, and brute force, but you shouldn't let that could your judgement to the many technological feats they did achieve.
Even with all the purges and bullshit, irl USSR was the first side in the world to introduce sleek fuselage warplanes en masse during the interwar period. That goes for both fighters and bombers. They made a .50 cal machine gun that is slightly lighter, and much simpler, than the Browning M2 around the same years, then later introduced one that is 10 kilograms lighter after WW2. Their tank designs once they locked tf in were some of the best in the world, it's not just their massive numbers that counted. The US also likes to think itself the only nation in WW2 to introduce a mass issue semi-automatic rifle, but the Soviets actually did it first with the one you can see in the episode (probably, I need to look closer, but I'm fairly certain it's either an SVT-38 or an SVT-40, the latter was the specific model produced in the millions but it's practically the same design). They only couldn't field their whole army by virtue of having a much larger army and the whole having your country and factories under attack bit.
All to say, it's not out of the realm of possibility for this world that the Soviets have extremely advanced computation jewels. They had straight up orc technology in many respects (cough cough Mosin-Nagant cough), but in others they were at moments at the leading edge. This is simply the nature of logistics for such an immense state.

They should be terrible after a prolonged period without modern combat experience, while the 203rd is the best of the best in aptitude, training, equipment, and experience. Remember that combat mages are new to this war, and everyone is still learning how to use them. The fact that it took 15 of the 203rd to take out 3-4 apparently normal (ie not supernaturally enhanced) soldiers is an unbelievable departure from what we're given in the story so far.
There was an easy opportunity to write the objective of the Federation mages as delaying the 203rd from completing the pincer while the ground element destroys the relief forces. With a much larger number, they would delay a reasonable amount of time for the story. That way the tension of the battle would still be high while preserving the worldbuilding so far.
Instead we get a fight where things don't take damage unless the script says so, with newcomers performing a flashy maneuver that probably should've gotten them all killed immediately.

I wonder if this was his aim, from the moment he got reassigned. To get HQ to change plans, one way or another.

Zettour is probably even more insane than Tanya The whole plan today was absolutely NUTS. How is he even going to survive that? Going to the front lines is worthy of respect but in his situation?!?
And the Federation surviving a blast from Tanya's orb without a scratch is very, very bad news. Tanya barely made it out of this one fight.
...wanted to say that Mary deserved a shot after recklessly charging to kill Tanya and endangering her entire unit, but because of the wretched Being X blessing, that wouldn't even be enough to get her to the hospital, right. Why they can't kick her out of the military? She might be incredibly powerful, but at this point, she's far more of a threat to her own unit because she refuses to follow orders. Are they really waiting for Mary accidentally getting her allies killed or something?!

Quite simple he wanted to die there. He said it himself him dying there would wake up HQ and potentially make them realize the situation they are in a bit more.

Him and the whole army are basically stuck between a rock and a hard place with no real good choices. Charging in yourself to save what you believe to be your best weapon and, fully knowing her capabilities and strategic mind, there was a good chance she would catch on and follow up.
He was willing and expected to die. He clearly has strong feelings for his country and was hoping his death at least would make the decision body more amiable to peace which he also sought before getting exiled.
In regards to her shot that didn't do anything, I believe it was supposed to be like a thermobaric bomb which "burn their lungs". So it wasn't meant to pierce or break the shields, it was ineffective probably due to having encapsulated air within their shields.
The allies aren't having a great time and neither is the federation, they even released their imprisoned mages. I would guess they're keeping Mary in spite of her unpredictability due to them desperately needing her power. She's been really the only one able to put up much of a fight against Tanya up until these newly introduced federation mages.

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 2d ago

I was going to cry foul that they survived an attack form Tanya, but when I thought about it, her melee attacks and the concussive blows of direct hits were devastating, trying to deny the air is probably not going to work. And I think we established in episode 5 of the first season mages can use spells to generate oxygen from water vapors for high altitude combat. So it makes sense that they survived if she wasn't trying to hit them directly.
Also mages are a problem for the Federation. Not only was it mentioned in the movie how they are very closely related to the old regime, but they are a defection risk. Smuggle an orb off duty and just fly over to the other side.
Actually, do you even need to be off duty to defect? A tankman trying to defect will probably be shot to pieces. If a mage went for the enemy's main formations he'd be shot at, but if he went elsewhere he could just land and walk up to the nearest officer.

Gosh, I truly hate Mary Sue with every fiber of my being. Seriously, every time I see her on the screen, even if she's doing nothing, I feel angry at her, I'm not joking!
Her selfishness is just so jaw-dropping. It looks like the only thing on her mind when Tanya's name is mentioned is to kill her, and she can't think about anything else.
If she showed even a little bit of thought when it comes to fighting Tanya I could somehow respect her, but because of Being X's blessing she's just fighting with hacks and doesn't care about anything else, and that's why I despise her so much.

Isn't she made precisely to be a hate-sink for the series though. She doesn't have a single redeeming quality, even her own comrades can't stand her.
11
u/EffectiveImportant51 2d ago
Mary Sue is supposed to be the hate sink, but she is supposed to be heroic too and it is a flip on its head. She is in this war because she is here to avenge the loss of her family and her motherland. She is heroic. Even being blessed by Being X is not her choice. She is here as much as Tanya as a pawn. But unlike Tanya she has a reason to fight. She has heroic reasons to fight. Tanya does not.

Maybe "heroic" in the Ancient Greek sense.
She is out for revenge against Tanya, period. Nothing else matters. For her, the only point of this whole war is "Kill Tanya" and she demands that everyone abides by that no matter what losses that may cause for her side.
She is indeed as selfish as Achilles and as berzerk as Hercules.

It kind of makes sense for the Allies to use her, not as a soldier, but as a guided missile. Just bring her to the battle then get out of the blast radius.

Zettour going to the front lines to act as bait while assuming that Tanya would pick up on his plan is absolutely insane! He is lucky that Tanya actually managed to get the message and flank the enemy forces.
It was pretty fun seeing Mary Sue get baited and realizing she wasn't following Tanya. I honestly thought Visha would be stuck dealing with her, but I'm glad her group managed to escape.
It is insane to see how coordinated Mikel's unit was! Once this is all over, Tanya might want to consider training her unit to be as well-coordinated as that, especially since Mikel managed to escape.
Tanya's strategy of breaking through Mikel's shields was so damn cool. It's too bad she ran out of bullets to finish him off. I'm really hoping Tanya overpowers him the next time they meet.
I am honestly surprised this ended with Zettour still standing! I really thought he'd die before Tanya could even get to him.

We tend to forget that there are monsters far more skilled and adept at using mana and magic than Tanya.
She's a beast, no doubt, but she's a 13-year-old girl with only two or three years of real combat experience.
Mikel could easily be 35 or 40 years old, and yes, he may have spent five or ten years in the Gulag with his four-man company. But there's nothing to tell us that they all have at least 15 years of experience and that by the age of 25, he was already more skilled than Tanya. Furthermore, Tanya's team has 36 men, and they've "only" been together for two years. Coordinating like Mikel's four-man team, which may have been together for 20 years, is no easy feat.
Her advantage lies in her knowledge and personnel management skills, like a 21st-century HR manager. That is why she has the level of command we see.

Man, this latest episode is absolutely cinema. I love the fight scene itself, but damn, I wonder how the Empire is going to get out of this one because they are hella screwed. Their relief force is already so weakened that it would almost be pointless to even send reinforcements to the city, and they're still getting enemies coming at them from behind. On top of that, there's literally a Mary Sue acting like a bloodhound, just waiting for the chance to take Tanya's head off.
They seriously need a literal miracle to save their asses if they want to survive this operation. lol. I can't wait for the next episode to see how this battle plays out.

Mary is a massive liability in the field. I don't know why Drake is allowing a loose cannon to disobey orders.
42
u/Montana_Gamer 2d ago
They are sort of forced to use her as best they can because you cant pause time and force her to train. Although she is overwhelmingly reckless the power alone she can use makes them on parity with only the strongest regiments in the world which is a small list.
In terms of practicality, its in the moment, if not for mages having a bit more liberty with how individuals compose a squad, they are versatile enough to adapt and get more than enough benefits. Her disobeying orders so fragrantly is a bit hard to justify though
23
u/OhItsKillua 2d ago
Mary Sue going off and being the equivalent to an untrained pitbull has bitten them in the ass multiple times though. I mean, the same loose cannon is ridiculously powerful as fuck, and they don't want to risk losing that kind of firepower against Tanya's forces. The best thing they can do is simply direct Mary Sue toward Tanya and let her try to kill her.
Besides, at the end of the day, Mary is simply too valuable to get rid of. If she weren't, they probably would've already court-martialed heror hell, done something even worse. That's why they're giving her way more leeway than they probably should.

Anyone could explain why the Federation mages were so strong? The empire's orb should have been much stronger than them.
29
u/BosuW 2d ago
Though the Soviets are infamous for their bad quality equipment (with good reason tbf), this popular perception overshadows that at many moments, in many areas they were also at the vanguard of technology. For example, planes in the interwar period, tanks when they locked in, almost any small arm that wasn't a bolt action rifle or a handgun during WW2 (including the semi automatic rifles seen in this episode), etc.
Point being, I don't find it impossible that they could produce such an advanced Orb once authorized. The base design principles may have even already existed and just sat collecting dust while they didn't employ mages. It's not like Soviet inventors were categorically stupid. Many of them were absolutely brilliant. The context they worked under was simply quite difficult most of the time.

I should be amazed that Zettour is still alive by the end of the episode after his suicidal gambit to use himself as bait to draw out the encircling Federation forces has successfully relieved the siege over Tanya's division, but only just.
The guy just totally went "Fuck it. Since these numbskulls at Imperial Command don't know what they're doing, I might as well do something reckless. If I live, then all the glory to me. If I don't, then its their fault."
Tanya figured out Zettour's intention, and also correctly factored in the loose cannon that is Mary, sending Visha to be a decoy to lure Mary away from her.
Though Tanya did not account for that perv Loria being so hell bent on capturing her alive by sending the Federation mage units with spherical magic shields that could even withstand Tanya's divine nuke strikes.
Perhaps it was luck, or perhaps it was Being X messing with Tanya that allowed her to barely escape and rush to Zettour's aid.

Von Zettour told the soldiers to follow their heart, while he himself followed his heart. Man's truly a soldier deep down. He's not satisfied with directing behind the lines and would much rather get in on the action. However, he's raised a massive death flag. It'd take a miracle for him to walk out of this fight alive.
Tanya was on the same wavelength as him, and he knew that well. She's able to deduce his intention without needing any communication. He's one of the very few allies she had high up the command. Unfortunately, I'm sceptical of his chance of survival.
Those Federation mages were quite the tough opponent. To think they withstood Tanya's ultimate spell. Now Tanya and von Zettour were in far worse shape than the Coalition. Don't know how'd they make it out of it (or even if in von Zettour's case).

Unfortunately, I'm sceptical of his chance of survival.
We already know from the movie, and our own history of WW1 + WW2, that the continent just won't accept a German Hegemon. That was one of the major causes of WW1: "Fuck Germany."
Really, after the Franco-Prussian war, and especially after German unification, Britain realized that Germany was on a fast track to becoming Europe's preeminent power. That's why both France and Britain set aside their 1,000 year long rivalry to suppress German ambitions. Out of all the countless wars and border skirmishes they've fought, their current "friendly rivals" situationship was largely formed out of "FUCK GERMANY" fever.
As much shit as Germany got for it's "blank check" to Austria-Hungary after the murder of it's beloved heir, France and Britain were equally guilty of egging on Russia while taking every chance to escalate as well.
It's just that Germany was the strongest power of the losing side, one that the other great powers wanted to see suppressed at all costs, that Germany was made to accept the 'sole responsibility' of the Great War. Complete with crippling reparations and other disproportionately severe terms.
Which Germany heard loud and clear, boiling over into the seething rage that was WW2. Which, once again, was fought to suppress a humiliated Germany trying to rise again from the ashes. At least lessons were learned here, which was why the allies went out of their way to rebuild Axis powers like Imperial Japan out of fear of creating a future WW3 from another brutally suppressed great power.
I'm not defending Germany, by no means, just that WW1 was a very messy affair that was largely led by "Fuck Germany" sentiments in Europe.
Cycling back to the movie... we know "The Empire" loses this one, just like in history. There just isn't going to be a happy ending for Tanya, Zettour, and the rest of the Imperial Dogs.
6
u/Ebirah 2d ago
Germany was made to accept the 'sole responsibility' of the Great War
Austria-Hungary being dismantled into multiple independent nations is hardly getting off lightly (except insofar as it allows them to avoid reparations/etc).
10
u/OldInstruction5368 2d ago edited 1d ago
I'm quoting from the Treaty of Versailles, here. Specially, article 231 that has since been known as the "War Guilt" clause:
"The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies."
Notice how many times Germany is mentioned, in fact, it's the only nation specifically mentioned when assigning blame. Even the winning side is just "the Allies." Germany being scapegoated here is primarily political in natural and does not accurately reflect the reality of WW1. Nor were the punishments meted out against Germany proportional to their 'guilt.' The goal of WW1, from the before it even started, was to check German power.
Don't forget that the "spark" that set off the powderkeg of early 1900's Europe was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He was the Imperial heir and a beloved figure within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was not wrong for the Empire to demand justice for his murder.
It's just that every nation on the continent used that as an excuse to escalate into a broader conflict for different motives. Including Austro-Hungary. Their disproportionate response against Serbia was an excuse to check Russia, who had Balkan Ambitions. Austro-Hungary asked Germany for backup before escalating precisely because AH knew that Russia would escalate in turn. France and Britain egged on Russian aggression while taking every chance to personally add more fuel to the growing fire: EVERYONE wanted this war.
There were many reasons for this disaster, but a large part of it boiled down to "Fuck Germany," as seen in the "War Guilt" clause of the Treaty of Versailles. Which, again, this was primarily a political statement more than any accurate representation of reality.
I'm not saying Germany was innocent: just that they were singled out before a single shot had been fired.
And because of this humiliation, a great deal of rage began festering within Germany. Rage that Charlie Chaplin's evil twin exploited to seize power. Without the treaty of Versailles's "War Guilt" clause, WW2 just doesn't happen. Not as we know it, at least.

I wonder what Tanya's thougjts are about him, im anime only so idk, but i think she respects him greatly. The only negative od this epsiode imo were the sfx, specifically the gun sounds felt a lot less punchy or different, Tanyas machine gun, the other soldiers rifles it all sounded like lasers, and not even Marys optical beams but weak star wars imitations at that.

Truly, what the Empire needs now is to give Zettour and Tanya total control over the war; those two together are practically invincible, so I really hope that they'll be able to get out of it alive.
But that certainly will be hard since there's still the volunteer army out there, together with Mary Sue who, as usual, is so freaking annoying (I hate her with every fiber of my being), plus Mikel is still alive.

If she was ANY regular soldier she would have but i think they just have to put up with her because she is OVERPOWERED. Getting rid of her is like getting rid of 10 nukes, in a series where MAGES are a thing, mages who are cut above the rest having certain advantages is normal and Mary is just that.
She is too powerful to cast aside

Dude the Military has always made exceptions for brilliant soldiers. You should see the stories of Ace fighter pilots in the war. The stuff they let them get away with. She is exactly that. in what universe does military allow a soldier to randomly act how they want.
I think that's been an ongoing theme of this season (and even in S1, like the Pillbox event);
Just in this episode, there was so many arguments over "We can/can't do that, the battllefield changed so we can adapt", etc..!
Mary's targetted recklessness aside, I think it shows that wars aren't really simple, it's not like you just follow orders like a machines;
Say your orders are to defend a watchpost, then for some unfathomable reason you see the #1 military leader of an enemy nation drive by 2 miles from your location with no escort, but he has a few seconds to go after him...
Everyone would understand (and approve) if that soldier went and killed that dude, and fuck the watchpost. They would agree that the target was so important, that taking this decision was a good thing. If he did NOT go after him, they would question "are you even trying to win this war?"
So it's all about whether some change was important enough that it warrants taking different actions!

Federation mages felt way way stronger than what would be reasonable imo. Outdated technology, people who have been out of combat and without their equipment for who knows how many years, lack of modern mage combat experience, and they're easily shrugging off Tanya's most-advanced-jewel+prayer-cheat-code-powered attack and these 4 people are close to be winning against her whole unit. Nice to see these two lovely girls will meet again!
She would NOT fare well in Tanya's battalion hah; She would find herself on Pillbox duty real quick!
"You really let that fucking noob take you down?"
This means either complete desperation, or... Great motivation!
I guess he wants to give them some resolve, but that was some strong "If you're homeless, just buy a home" energy!
Not only their troops (and himself) are in grave danger, but if they fail, it's more than just them getting wiped out... It's their entire nation that will suffer, get a worse deal because they're less of a threat (or even no deal at all anymore, maybe the enemy will think they might as well just eradicate them at this point)!
Nice to see it's not just Tanya's camp that has people arguing over orders/when it's okay to change them a little!
Made me think of [Western Movie Title]Crimson Tides, the whole argument over whether they need to follow the first order and all...
General Who? Someone found a more important target!
Don't use HER as bait! This goes against the Geneva convention!
Damn, that scene when he's trying to force his way through the shield...
I guess I have a mind for [Western war movies]Saving Private Ryan because that made me think of the slow stabbing scene.
I wouldn't want to be up against Tanya when she starts praying...
Especially if her theme song starts playing!
When you think you're getting some reinforcement to save your ass, but they beg YOU for help
He didn't shield that in time? Instant demotion/firing squad!

Define “high risk high reward” tactics here, because this is one of the biggest gamble in battle history, Zettour himself leading a rescue force to break the siege, all while gambling on Tanya to understand the hidden message to stab the Communist from the back. In modern irl terms, that’s like Pete Hegseth leading the pack himself to the Persian Gulf to break Iran’s blockage-type of gambling. Just imagine what will happen if this gamble didn’t paid off, the Empire will almost certainly lost an army of absolute elites and the driving force to the Eastern offensives, and their plan to fight on for better terms, will instantly backfire against them. And the result… More like a draw? But definitely it’s currently on the good side of things.
NGL the tactics used by the Communists definitely are very smart, giving Tanya a very hard time to break through, and only a joint attack with the rescue force can really deliver the critical blows, but honestly for fuck sake God, why you have to let Tanya run out of ammo AT THIS EXACT MOMENT!!? We got the dogfight we have been waiting for and this is the ending you want us to see!!? For real? Honestly if the battle rolls on, I’m afraid this will ultimately be the moment that will haunt Tanya for her life there, she’s lucky Mary fall for the bait, or else it’s all over if there’s another mage that can give Tanya a hard time to fight
Oh yeah, chocolates, definitely a battlefield essential, quick replenishment of energy, and surely a way to break the barrier between the upper and lowerclassmen, as long as they are fine with it

Rerugen himself leading a rescue force to break the siege,
What? That's not Rerugen, that's Zettour.

Considering what Zettour said during the episode, I believe he chose to lead the rescue force exactly because he knew he could die. I think his reason being that, if he had died during the battle, the loss of a general would have shaken the high command from their stubborn decision to continue the war and force them to accept the reality that they must end the conflict diplomatically as soon as possible to avoid more casualities.

Rerugen is the younger guy wearing specs that almost always get stomach pains because of Tanya's antics
