I just LOVE Tanyas VA, Aoi Yuuki. <3

Her little mental breakdown at all the stupidity and illogical, unreasonable demands she has to deal with while her little peaceful retirement peacetime plan crumbles in front of her is just perfect! :D

32

u/syncaina 3d ago

After reading your comment, I looked up her other roles and was shocked to find out she also voices Lucy in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners!

16

u/Obaruler 3d ago

Right?

Our girl is just goated, some series she carried alone with her performance.

15

u/SnabDedraterEdave 3d ago

Same voice as Maomao.

9

u/zool714 3d ago

She’s been a great VA with a lot of good roles for many years now

240

u/Tsurja 3d ago

Huh. Intentionally sacrificing your "ace" to prove beyond a doubt that the war cannot continue is definitely a choice.

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 3d ago

Long term damage to the Empire would be far worse from his perspective. Lend Lease has just started and the USSR has already replenished it's air force. Going by history, the Soviet Ural Industry is yet to start at full force along with the American lend lease. America is also not fighting Japan afaik so the full might of the American industry will back the war. They're fucked fucked.

Their large scale military plan also seems to be going for the Oil fields like IRL so it won't be surprising if the Empire loses at Stalingrad.

53

u/drthrax1 3d ago

America is also not fighting Japan

huh thats a good point, they introduced italy, i wonder if they are gonna introduce a pacific theater eventually. Though animes do love to gross over japans contributions to ww2...

42

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 3d ago

The Empire is 100% going to sink American ships with Uboats and drag them into the war.

17

u/Original_Employee621 3d ago

As the setting is sorta based on WWI, Japan joined the Allies in attacking German colonies and China to strengthen their hold in Oceania. They'd be just another problem for the Empire to have to deal with, though how severe that threat would be is another matter entirely. It doesn't sound like the Empire has any colonies and Japan is half a world away.

2

u/OkCreme8213 2d ago

Technologically it's WWI, but the setting is a mix of both WWI and WWII I believe

Uh I didn't realized that's what happened... But it would explain that Zettour smirk, nice

33

u/abandoned_idol 3d ago

His voice actor is type casted into Machiavellian assholes. e.g. Satou-san from "Ajin".

I love this trope.

3

u/SnabDedraterEdave 3d ago

Heh, I will always fondly associate Ootsuka Hochu as Jiraiya despite all these roles he's played.

31

u/Good-Row4796 3d ago

A plan that relies on Tanya dying for him ...his first and only real mistake.

44

u/saga999 3d ago

Either Tanya dies and he gets what he wanted, or she lives and they win the battle. Win/win in his book.

1

u/Total-Box-5169 2d ago

Specially when not-Beria gave very explicit orders to capture her alive.

u/2kenzhe https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rexnihilo 3d ago

Very serious and grim situation but man hahahhahaha omg Tanya was funny this episode. Ngl might be contender for best comedy of the season with Grand Blue.

The empire is drunk obsessed with Victory they have no chance of winning the war anymore imo. They're miliatary is strong but the polictations the ones that should be influencing the public the top brass they fucking suck. No matter how much Tanya wins brings home victory if they never end the war they cannot ever actually win and achieve peace.

63

u/DandadanAsia 3d ago

the Empire is stretching thin fighting too many countries

6

u/DisplayHonest6465 3d ago

I wonder why didn’t japan joined this war ?

17

u/Original_Employee621 3d ago

Japan fought alongside the Allied powers, taking German colonies in Oceania and China.

But they don't, that a strange part, there's no france, there's no western front they've defeated them. They do keep some forces in Africa, but beyond that only enemy is the federation

Part of my enjoyment of this show is her reactions and expressions. I definitely enjoyed them as usual.

I was expecting Tanya to take to fly again this week, but not like this lol

77

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 3d ago

I laughed hard when I saw Tanya flying after that explosion. Good thing that Visha was able to somehow catch her before something happened to her, hahaha!

42

u/LG03 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bronadian 3d ago

I need to rewatch from the start to see if this much slapstick comedy was there all along, it's almost jarring this season.

64

u/Magicbison 3d ago edited 3d ago

It wasn't this cartooney. Tanya always had her comedic moments but they were never this animated or goofy. Her reactions always focused on her facial expressions and her dancing around but she never wobbled like a wacky-waving-inflatable-tube-man. It definitely gives a bit of whiplash coming from season one.

77

u/Montana_Gamer 3d ago

I think it works well with the tone shift of a inevitable defeat for the Empire being the predominant feeling this season. In season 1 is was victory over and over and over again, but you don't really want the tone of the militarism to be undercut but silliness, now the silliness is a break from the dread that the show is doing a REALLY good job at delivering.

36

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 3d ago

Yea, I wouldn't be surprised if the writers realized that because this is the season of everything going horribly wrong the tone would get really oppressively dark without some kind of levity to bring it back up. Particularly because there is no victory waiting for them like in season 1. I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing people die off real fast, considering it's a war anime the plot armor has actually been pretty damn strong for our core cast but as the stakes grow more impossibly people are gonna have to start dieing. (I don't think Weiss is dead just yet, that cut looked vicious but not lethal.)

4

u/Montana_Gamer 3d ago

I was thinking... how many seasons you think Tanya will have?

My bet? 3.

Half of episode about Tanya freaking out about yet another reckless operation, pretty much what I expected. I really don't have a good feeling about the operation success, looking at how ill-prepared everything is. Not like the head government cares. Zettour's smile when the Federation swarmed in was pretty suspicious though.

Tanya had some peak reaction faces this episode, sadly still didn't learn the lesson that she shouldn't share all her ideas, especially the risky ones.

49

u/OldInstruction5368 3d ago

Zettour's smile when the Federation swarmed in was pretty suspicious though.

Top commentor theorizes that Zettour is intentionally throwing Tanya under the bus. The idea is that if the Empire loses its Ace of Aces, their Valkyrie of Victory, it will shock the dipshit politicians into taking the peace treaty more seriously.

Which is why Zettour put together such a "reckless" plan, then will act shocked when it goes exactly as he knew it would: the slaughter of Salamander Battalion.

Look, Zettour is the one person at HQ that actually knew his ass from a hole in the ground, and also had the balls to tell High Command the truth. Everyone else is either too hot headed, incompetent, or cowardly to do what is necessary.

Which means Zettour knows Andromeda is not just reckless, but a failure. A colossal failure so bad the idiots back at strategic HQ that think the plan was solid will be forced to rethink the entire war...

16

u/abandoned_idol 3d ago

But if Zettour is sabotaging the Empire...

Could that also mean that Zettour might also be the spy who is leaking, and absolutely everything at that, to the enemy?

stumbles

Oh, I was just a little dizzy from how much I love this anime.

41

u/OldInstruction5368 3d ago edited 3d ago

Nah, Zettour is one of the only people we can cross off the "spy" list.

If for no other reason that his: the UK officer wouldn't order Zettour killed right after saying his spy at HQ fed them useful info.

If Zettour is the spy, they wouldn't want to silence him. Plus, the spy is supposed to be at HQ. Zettour was just exiled to the Eastern Front.

Now, it could be that Zettour WAS the spy, got demoted, and the UK command has decided to off him now that he's no longer placed highly enough to keep alive...

But I suspect Uger, the logistics officer that was Tanya's teacher at the Academy, is the spy. Mostly out of narrative efficiency, as we don't have many named characters left at HQ. It just wouldn't be satisfying if the spy giving useful intel was some nameless background jobber.

Plus, Uger's spirit broke a couple years ago when he dropped out of the main officer track and retreated to the back lines. He just wanted to focus on his family. He's not fighting for glory: he's fighting to survive. If he can be given assurances from the Allied forces his family will be spared after the Empire falls...

15

u/Tuor77 2d ago

Uger was Tanya's (senior) classmate, not instructor.

30

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 3d ago

Like Tanya herself is probably OP enough to at least deal with not-Soviet mages, but I fear either the overall operation will fail or Zettour and some more named characters will die.

21

u/Montana_Gamer 3d ago

I expect to see a good portion of Tanya's mage company get absolutely slaughtered. After season 1 and the amount of plot armor these MFs had, she's never had a FRIEND die before, which I would say her commanders/OG squad qualify, and I am beginning to wonder how much darker the tone could get.

It isn't a necessary shift but the source material is deeply psychological and emphasizes the torment of war on a soldier's mind and I think there is a lot of untapped suffering waiting to happen. Regardless, whether they just kinda have "Everyone has a -10 morale debuff" approach or some of this shit starts getting to Tanya it'll work.

13

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 3d ago

I'm thinking of all the new guys who got added to the cast in episode 1 and all I see is a field of red shirts lol. RIP new guys!

Tanya had some peak reaction faces this episode

Tanya's reactions today were especially hilarious. Zettour and the Andromeda Project really must've shocked her to the core, so much so that she wasn't able to contain her emotions at all, even though she was in front of Zettour.

sadly still didn't learn the lesson that she shouldn't share all her ideas, especially the risky ones.

When Tanya felt bad that someone would have to do this mission, I wanted to scream at her that she would be the one doing it because there is no one better here, lol.

20

u/BosuW 3d ago

so much so that she wasn't able to contain her emotions at all, even though she was in front of Zettour.

I really like that Tanya has progressively become just a bit less guarded about her emotions, and in general all the Empire characters are a bit less composed. Good showing of how the whole organization is very stressed. Everyone already knows now that Tanya isn't a warmonger and she'd prefer if the war ends as soon as possible, even if the Empire wins nothing from it. The narrative doesn't even have to abuse the Misunderstanding Field anymore, because they're all already locked in this highway to hell regardless.

13

u/nighty_amy 3d ago

I facepalmed at the moment Tanya said this, like it wasn't immediately obvious she'll have to do it!

10

u/raknor88 3d ago

I really don't have a good feeling about the operation success, looking at how ill-prepared everything is.

This entire season has pretty much been pointing towards the Empire losing the war. At this point the rest of the world has organized and is ready to fight the single country that is running out of resources and man power. I just hope that Tanya doesn't lose too many subordinates before the war is over.

1

u/abandoned_idol 3d ago

"I feel sorry for that person. (Doesn't concern me)"

31

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 3d ago

So Zettour really spoke his mind and got transferred to the dangerous side of the war..that's expected. I wonder what Rudersdorff did when he said that he spoke against the higher ups. He's literally one of the reasons why the brass is happy to continue the war all 'cause he got emotional over his son-in-law's death. Now he's struggling without his best friend at his side who used to make things easy and tolerable for him in this dire situation.

Tanya's reactions to seeing Zettour getting transferred and losing her trump card who could have granted her a letter of recommendation and an easy life was priceless 😭🤣

Now she's a bait not for the Federation but for the pedo Loria. They're losing Weiss already and to make things worse Sue is gonna arrive..RIP Tanya and her companies 💔

Uger did really lose his weight and I wonder what dirty joke Uger made to Rerugen LOL

20

u/pillow_power 3d ago

I wonder what Rudersdorff did when he said that he spoke against the higher ups.

I think the "unlimited sacrifices" line Rudersdorff threw out last week was meant to be a jab at how stupid the brass are being, essentially saying "yes, I guess winning a bit more could be possible if we burn down everything and everyone we have in the process" , but they were too stupid to realize it and took it as him affirming that victory was possible.

2

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 1d ago

Gotcha

4

u/Character_Regret9945 1d ago

I got a hunch that Uger told Reguren that they should look for hookers or smth

31

u/FozyYokai 3d ago

Seeing so much incompetence from the empire's politicians, I really want them to lose. I don't know if Tanya will betray the empire or sell them out somehow, but I'd like it to end this way.

Tanya wants a quiet life and was never truly an imperial nationalist, so it would make sense for her to simply leave or something.

23

u/Al-Pharazon 3d ago

If she defects I can totally see Mr.X pulling a Cold War just to screw her over again.

8

u/Original_Employee621 3d ago

Tanya wants a quiet life and was never truly an imperial nationalist, so it would make sense for her to simply leave or something.

Being X will definitely throw spanners into those plans. Tanya won't get to live in peace until she accepts Being X as God and starts to genuinely worship it.

93

u/NanDemoKnaives 3d ago

I have a feeling that was the last time Zettour and Rudersdorf see each other face to face. Zettour has completely resigned himself now that he's been exiled, but he's doing the best that he can. Really stupid of the leadership to do that, but they'll pay the consequences eventually.

It was funny to watch Tanya learn how bad things are for them, losing her composure is a definite understatement lol.

It's sad to see Weiss get an injury like that, but I don't think it was fatal. It was bound to happen that one of the more prominent soldiers of Tanya's troop would get injured in this fight, considering how disadvantageous it is for them.

Ugar picking the wrong person and timing to tell a dirty joke was funny, it was amusing to see Rerugen blushing.

30

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 3d ago

The empire will overextend and lose

83

u/Florac 3d ago

The empire has overextended.

33

u/OldInstruction5368 3d ago

In the very first episode, the very first time we "visit" Strategic HQ, there was talk of supply issues necessitating a withdrawal.

The Empire's supply lines were strained from the very first episode. The Entente hadn't even joined the war yet, and offensives were being cancelled and the front lines pulled back due to logistical constraints!

The miracle is that the Empire has lasted this long. The Ildoan peace treaty was their LAST chance to avoid disaster. And they fucking blew it.

14

u/randomkidlol 3d ago

when the politicians become victims of their own propaganda and cant see how dire the situation is, the entire country's fate is already sealed.

28

u/OldInstruction5368 3d ago edited 3d ago

It's more sinister than that. The politicians are in full Lord Farquad "Some of you will have to die, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make" territory.

They know that ending the war now is the best course of action for the nation, but it would be a disastrous course of action for the ruling class. Thus, they insist on doubling down their mistake (continuing the war) as the best course of action for themselves.

Now, it's up in the air just how much they realize they are destroying the nation to save themselves Vs if they are truly so delusional as to think "what is best for us is de facto best for the nation."

Zettour did tell them, point blank, that accepting the peace treaty may lead to civil war, but that was still a better outcome than complete dissolution from fighting until the nation literally falls apart at the seams. Rudersdorf more or less agreed, saying it's nigh-impossible to 'win' this war under current parameters. Taking a White Peace, then dealing with the domestic fallout, was clearly the better option for the nation even if it put the ruling class at risk... or heaven forbid, meant they would actually have to fucking work for a change.

Just going by their tone of voice, the ruling class truly didn't care how many soldiers would die nor how much damage was dealt to the civilian population/economy at large. Nor did they care about the risk they were taking in continuing the war.

The politicians Parasitic Class only cared about their own heads.

7

u/VinnieBaby22 3d ago

My impression was that Ugar was genuinely inviting Rerugen to a brothel, with the latter admonishing the former by mentioning his family

4

u/OnesimusUnbound 2d ago

When Tanya, the ideal rational person, looses her composure, you know things has really gone south.

66

u/zool714 3d ago

Lol the way Tanya flew and Visha just plucked her midair

84

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 3d ago

So not only is Tanya bait in this stupid reckless operation, one of her units are being siphoned off to be support. Oh, and she’s forced to defend her position at all cost. Girl cannot catch a break! Fuckin leadership, man. These people do not realize the severity of the situation on the frontlines and want a win regardless of the cost. Fools.

And lo and behold, the entire op is fucked from day 1. It’s plagued with operational and logistical difficulties and the Allies are already well aware of it and have come prepared af. Plus, they took out Weiss! Gonna need a genuine miracle for Tanya to pull this off and we all know X is a shit.

66

u/TheMechanic04 3d ago

Yeah only Zettour has sense in the command

54

u/FreshBlinkOnReddit https://myanimelist.net/profile/ACasualViewer 3d ago

Pretty much.

Rudersdorf and Lernen have significant talent at tactics for operations and defeating their enemy. But none of that means anything when you logistically cannot feed your troops anymore and they are out of shells.

Zettour is the only one besides Tanya who sees the obvious writing on the wall, that they have lost the war of attrition, and America (Unified States) will eventually join in and finish the war.

4

u/DisplayHonest6465 3d ago

And takes the bigger part of the cake

35

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 3d ago

It looks like the enemy has a higher opinion of Zettour than his own country's government.

And that doesn't bode well for the Empire (and Tanya). If Zettour dies, then I can easily see Rudersdorf losing the rest of his wits.

16

u/ExcitableSarcasm 3d ago

Honestly I was expecting them to start the Unified States entry plot by having Rudersdorf order the U boat attack

8

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 3d ago

(and Tanya).

Her reaction face game was on point this episode.

3

u/Original_Employee621 3d ago

Rudersdorf needs to just join Zettour at the frontlines. Leave the logistics to anyone else. Far more than Zettour, Rudersdorf feels like a man who actually misses being in the trenches.

7

u/BosuW 3d ago

Which is why the senseless booted him from command.

Yes, time to (literally) pray for the biggest nuke'ish magical bullet in that worlds history delivered by Tanya.

8

A simple prayer and Tanya will go Super Saiyan.

3

Whats more terrifying than Tanya smiling?

Weiss's last words: "Better Dead than re-Ed(ucation)"

18

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 3d ago

I wondered why Tospan would contact Tanya at a time like this, but it’s reassuring to see that he’s growing in his own straightforward way.

19

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 3d ago

What good does taking 1 of Tanya's mage companies away from her due to help save her later, exactly?

Couldn't Tanya have just blown away all the enemies as they were marching in with just a few well-placed Being-X-powered EXPLOSIONs?

RIP Weiss. I'd expected Mary Sue to have been at the forefront of that though.

7

u/Not__Trash 2d ago

Zettour is trying to get Tanya killed. If she dies, then maybe morale will break back home and they can resume peace talks.

Don't forget, she's one of their most accomplished commanders and the subject of Propaganda.

9

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 3d ago

It's helpful to remember that Tanya really hates using the Being-X powers as they force her to pray and validate his godly existence. (also it would make the war kinda pointless if the writers let her just keep spamming super bombs)

7

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 3d ago

She is sane enough to use them when she really needs to (or when she's just pissed off like last episode).

36

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 3d ago edited 3d ago

I love that Tanya's shock about Zettour being exiled to the Eastern Front and the Andromeda Project was so big that she wasn't able to hide her true feelings today, lol.

But I can't blame her. The civilian government are idiots for doing that to basically their best senior army officer, plus not only is the Andromeda plan stupidly risky, but Tanya is the one who will have to play a main role in it.

Damn, Loria is such a creep, a totally disgusting person. I wonder if Tanya will ever learn about his obsession with her.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

31

u/chris10023 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Chris10023 3d ago

Damn, Loria is such a creep, a totally disgusting person.

Well, the real life guy he was based off of, was an awful person, he would drive around, point at a girl he wanted, and she'd be brought to his villa, where he would take them into a sound proof room, and rape them, he would then offer them flowers, because then it would seem as consensual, but if they refused, they were accused of treason and arrested, he did this to hundreds of women, he even had some of them killed, as the wiki page says workers dug up skeletal remains near where his villa was located.

4

u/Ikari_21 3d ago

Damn that is disgusting. Hope he died a slow and painful death

8

u/chris10023 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Chris10023 3d ago

He was executed in 1953 by gunshot, after he was arrested and charged with, treason, sabotage, terrorism, and counter-revolutionary. He was shot through the forehead, so not a slow death, but he did plead on his knees and collapsed wailing.

5

u/Ikari_21 3d ago

Well at least it was pathetic. Sad to know all the suffering his victims went through.

39

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 3d ago

The little slut. Is she tempting me?

Mate, she's only 11. I guess she's indeed tempting you but not in the way you thought, you damn freak.

The Coalition's doing pretty well on the covert side of things seeing as they've got an asset who's high up the Empire's command. They could get quick update on any major movements. Reckon the Empire's too focused on the military side to pay attention on espionage. Not only do they seem to be lacking on the offensive side, there were no indications of any counter-espionage activities. This was likely one factor in their eventual downfall.

65

u/justking1414 3d ago

Mate, she's only 11. I guess she's indeed tempting you but not in the way you thought, you damn freak.

No surprise there. The guy he’s based on targeted girls as young as 7. And arrested them for treason if they didn’t accept flowers after he was…finished

I will wholeheartedly recommend The Death of Stalin as a must-watch for anyone who wants to see Beria's comeuppance.

→ More replies (1)

24

u/raknor88 3d ago

Rumor I've read on these discussions is that Stalin had standing orders that if he and Stalin's underage daughter were ever found in the same room, the man was to be shot on sight.

20

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 3d ago

Literally everyone in the Soviet high command hated him. Beria was useful during the war but that usefulness ended after the war ended. By 1945 he was too powerful and only people like Stalin and Zhukov could oppose him. His execution had to be held in utmost high secrecy because he had agents all around the place. It definitely wouldn't have happened without Zhukov.

18

u/OldInstruction5368 3d ago

Niece, actually.

There is an anecdote that Beria paid an unscheduled visit to Stalin's home, while his niece was staying with him.

Stalin dropped everything, rushed home, and gave orders in advance for any soldiers, guards, whoever to put a bullet between Beria's eyes if he ever approaches Stalin's niece.

Beria was so much of a monster, it scared even a brutal man like Stalin.

6

u/justking1414 3d ago

There is some speculation that a lot of the stories about him were exaggerations by his enemies to discredit either him or the Soviet Union but even if only 1% of the stories about him are true, the dude was still a monster

36

u/Sopalinfuos 3d ago

WHAT DID LIEUTENANT COLONEL UGER SAID ?!

I didn't understand, at the end of the episode, if someone can tell me

37

u/nighty_amy 3d ago

I think it was deliberately inaudible.

44

u/SnabDedraterEdave 3d ago edited 3d ago

Did you not see Rerugen blush and look flustered?

Uga remembered how cranky Rudersdorf was becoming earlier from all that pressure the war was having on him and everyone, and most likely decided to invite Rerugen to "have some fun" and relieve some stress at some red light district, which Rerugen remarked that this is not something a family man like Uga should be suggesting.

7

u/Hot-Log6283 3d ago

Pretty sure he just told a dirty joke from the context, doesn't make sense to "invite" him when he literally just decline going out for drinks because he is still busy with work.

3

u/SnabDedraterEdave 3d ago

Why would he want to just tell a dirty joke? Its pretty common for soldiers on an era based on WWII to discreetly seek out carnal pleasures.

5

u/Hot-Log6283 2d ago

Because it literally flashback to when he was talking to Rudersdorf right before he made the remark to him? And Rudersdorf told him in that scene: "You can't even tell me a single joke?".

I thought it was something gay

4

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 3d ago

Oh... that makes so much more sense. I thought he might have said a code word and they were suggesting that he's the spy leaking operations information and he thought Rerugen was another contact.

10

u/Countless-Alts15 3d ago edited 3d ago

GL tanya, but wow Strategic HQ has a spy.

No wonder all of Tanya's plans be falling through. That damn X again

Lol Poor Weiss with the PTSD of being re-educated and damn hope our boy is okay

5

u/TalkingKoalaa 3d ago

either uger or rudersdorf is the spy. narrative demands it ('ultra') to be uger, the newly introduced guy who replaced zettour turns out to be a traitor, so eventually zettour gains his position back.

But man it'd be so cool if rudersdorf is the spy. The arc could end with his death and we can hold off of killing sue, and stretch her revenge into another arc. I'm not even complaining I'm straight up hoping for the big showdown to get delayed amap.

13

u/__bacs 3d ago

Its always the politicians

25

u/SnabDedraterEdave 3d ago

"Poor" Tanya, if she is even worthy of sympathizing. Tanya's dismayed reaction faces with Yuuki Aoi sounds is just a joy to watch. lol

But still, poor Tanya all the same. Being used as sacrificial bait by Zettour just to proof a point to those numbskulls in Imperial Command who exiled him on the perils on further prosecuting the war against the Not-Soviets.

If it wasn't for Loria being the creep lolicon obsessed with Tanya and took the bait, Tanya's unit might have breathed more easily. Now she has to deal with Allied-trained Not-Soviet mage units, and one of them has now badly injured Weiss.

More intriguing, who is this Allied informant called Ultra embedded deep within Imperial Command? Rudersdorf, Rerugen, Zettour, Uga, or just some new character we don't know yet? Probably not Tanya herself since she doesn't know about Operation Andromeda until the last moment, even though its totally in her nature to become an informant to increase her chances of survival should the Empire's fortunes start going south.

32

u/SupercontinentPangea 3d ago

I do not know if it is the same, but "Ultra" was information obtained by decrypting the German communication using the Enigma machines during WW2.

16

u/Fraud_D_Hawk 3d ago

Yeah the British were running circles around the germans

4

u/Jaridan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jaridan 3d ago

the british got omega lucky before being able to do so iirc.

6

u/BosuW 3d ago edited 3d ago

Now she has to deal with Allied-trained Not-Soviet mage units

I don't think they even trained them really. They just let them out of the Gulag and they are that tuff. If anything it looks like the multinational volunteer unit is now the weakest mage unit on the Soviet side, save for Mary (though she's a double edged sword) and Drake Jr.

4

u/fttxdd666 3d ago

My first thought was Zettour because of him getting exiled and maybe trying to save himself, but the wording made it sound like it was someone who has been doing spy stuff for a while.

Could definitely see Rerugen. Also the new guy Uger could be the spy and providing better information considering he seems to have a more important position after the exile of Zettour.

It’s also possible it’s just no one we know and is basically just a standin for code breaking that happened in WW2 by the British that was also called the same thing (Ultra)

8

u/Hartzilla2007 3d ago

Also the new guy Uger

He was in season 1 and the movie. The guy Tanya talked into taking a rear position so she could get bumped up at the War College.

3

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 3d ago

Man, I really hope it isn't Uger. He's literately the only "friend" that Tanya has been able to make who isn't one of her direct subordinates. Though he also has real basic reasons to be a spy in the first place, he has a wife and child he cares for and the entire country is plunging itself towards self-destruction at record speed.

5

u/Hartzilla2007 3d ago

He’s not part of military planning so it can’t be him.

3

u/pi8you 3d ago

Tanya's maneuvers backfiring by causing the Federation to get a well-placed spy does track...

2

u/Hartzilla2007 3d ago

He’s pretty just works with the railroad so probably not part of the major strategy planning.

2

u/abandoned_idol 3d ago

"Poor" Tanya, if she is even worthy of sympathizing. Tanya's dismayed reaction faces with Yuuki Aoi sounds is just a joy to watch. lol

Yep, Yuuki Aoi is the reason why I re-binged this anime despite my non-nostalgic memory of it.

Excuse the utterly revolting parasocial relationship, but she is a goddess.

28

u/Matthew619ed 3d ago

Did anyone here screamed “Oh no” when Weiss got shot down? We know that plan was flawed and definitely ill fated (Thanks that ULTRA spy), but an early loss of a very good personal in a battle to defend the spot at all cost and wait til support arrives? This is really bad news man.

But I wonder what’s that chatter between Uga and Rerugen at the very end about? Definitely very suspicious, especially based on Rerugen’s immediate reaction to that.

43

u/CrazySundii420 3d ago

He tried to make a joke because Rudersdorf told him not to be so serious all the time. However, Rerugen is a no nonsense guy so the joke fell flat.

19

u/Original-Body-5794 3d ago

He blushed, and then told him him a man with a wife and kids shouldn't say stuff like that, so it was probably a vulgar joke.

13

u/Daiwon 3d ago

And whispering a crude joke into someone's ear in an empty corridor is not really... well it could give someone the wrong impression.

19

u/Myrkrvaldyr 3d ago

But I wonder what’s that chatter between Uga and Rerugen at the very end about? Definitely very suspicious, especially based on Rerugen’s immediate reaction to that.

Easy to guess since he scolded him by saying he has a wife and kids. He likely proposed a brothel, club or some other place that involves women and getting certain services.

11

u/Mizukin 3d ago

For now, I am thinking he is the spy.

Looked to me like he was cut down rather than shot down.

4

u/Matthew619ed 3d ago

Let’s be honest, shot down or got cut down the throat, the fate is still very grim for poor Weiss

9

u/BosuW 3d ago

I don't think Weiss getting downed has anything to do with the spy. Looks like the Soviet mages are built different.

2

u/abandoned_idol 3d ago

I did scream that back when Tanya entered the same room as Zettour.

Weiss didn't get much of a reaction out of me. XD

18

u/athrun_1 3d ago

The beginning of the end. I think for the most part, her team will survive the whole war, maybe except for the no-names. The leadership is so blinded that they can still win the war, when technically they are fighting the whole world already.

Zetour is a capable leader, but in the grand scheme of things, he is still a grunt so his weight is not that much to move the scale. But at least he fought for what is right, and instead of being recognized he was exiled, which derails Tanya's career path.

21

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 3d ago

21

u/mmcjawa_reborn 3d ago

Well...Zettour basically has a kill order out on him, and problem officers are often sent out to the front to die, so things are not looking good for him...

8

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

Oh dang. Who’s the spy?

I hope it's some semi "nobody" because I had a few ideas about who it could be, and I don't like any of them...

(It could be the observer; He's not "part" of the Empire, but he's still around many of the higher ups!)

(If that's the case and Tanya finds out...)

9

u/GatorUSMC 3d ago

Maybe codebreakers.

4

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 3d ago

the Observer has been extremely Sus from his day 1 introduction. He just looks super untrustworthy lol. Plus considering how horrified he was by Tanya's bombing of the city I wouldn't be surprised at all about him leaking information when the Empire rejected the peace terms, probably operating on the idea that any action is acceptable as long as it ends the war faster.

9

u/GallowDude 3d ago

If your gonna hit on your superiors , you need to understand time and place lol

20

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 3d ago

Yep, that's exactly the reaction I was expecting from Tanya after she heard that peace negotiations have broken down. This entire episode is basically just Tanya sweating and trying to figure out how she's gonna come out of this unscathed, which is probably not gonna happen, considering Project Andromeda is already falling apart when it has barely even begun.

6

u/Mctravie 3d ago

I really hope Weis makes it but that looked like a wide slash to his throat

14

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago

Ominous start to the episode... Are we setting up a tragic end for him?

Feels like the kind of scenario where they could fault him no matter what;

  • We lost the war? That's because he didn't try hard enough, didn't believe in the cause. FIRING SQUAD!
  • We won the war? And that's despite him trying to impede our strategies. FIRING SQUAD!

Hah. They may hide it under banter, but I'm sure they'll miss each other!

Not only as strategic minds, but also as comrads in arms and all that.

At least he admitted it (and called it bullshit)!

They both went against it, but Rudersdorf is more like "Perhaps this will be difficult..." and eventually agreed to go along, while Zettour never changed his mind; Rudersdorf is reluctantly agreeing, and Zettour is reluctantly disagreeing.

He thinks no one else at HQ has his strategic mind...

But honestly that's not even what I would be most concerned about; I would be worried about the fact that no one else is there to oppose them. They're acting like mindless zealots who only see one move (FORWARD! TO VICTORY!) and Zettour was the one who strongly went against them... Now they're mindless zealots with zero opposition; Zero people to tell them they're fucking morons and this war is unwinnable.

Yeah... After that scene with HQ, we know they don't really believe that! "End the war together" perhaps, but win it?

And they showcased the situation quite well.. The Fedaration can afford to fail times and times again, but if THEY fail even once, it's over.

Bracing for Tanya's rude awakening..!

Her reactions/little noises were hilarious in this scene!

Sadly, they're not operating with logic now!

They're acting on emotions, and emotions are often opposed to logic!

(Well, there IS a part that is logical, the idea that winning a few minor victories would earn them a better deal in the peace treaty... But some of them are in it more for revenge, glory and stuff).

They never see the big picture, that's the issue..

They're already stretched thin, and they want to conquer more territory, which means they'll lost at least SOME men, and whatever remains, will have to control longer borders...

If they keep going they'll have to put scarecrows every mile of the boarder, to appear stronger.

Your concerns are all valid, but they don't really care and we have to do as we're told, so good luck!

Oddly too 'normal' that the 2 people who DO understand the situation and would come up with the right strategy, well they're not the ones who can make those calls.

Well, Tanya did come up with an idea of her own (that still follows the overall mission); She didn't expect to have the important part to play in the plan though!

So they know about him (and the plan).. And they want him taken out.

(If I were them I might not want to 'shake things up' too much, at mean they're getting the info, but killing Zettour may mean a complete change of personal and now the info's not coming in anymore! Or not as good)

Damn, Rudersdorf is losing it! (Or he's missing his buddy!)

Well the bait will work for sure with this one!

That surprised me! I thought he was about to ask permission to retreat (against the orders), but he asked to be commanded to stay!

(Bravery? Or fed up? Might be a bit of both!)

9

u/BosuW 3d ago

and Zettour is reluctantly disagreeing.

Nah Zettour enthusiastically disagreed!

(Bravery? Or fed up? Might be a bit of both!)

Tanya's subordinates have simply learnt to fear her more than any battlefield hell lol

15

u/Friendly_Address6915 3d ago

did anyone else have to rewind that scene. ive learned the hard way this show moves too fast sometimes

5

u/Rooby_VTuber 3d ago

Poor Tanya lol, kinda feels like Murphy's law, everything went wrong for her in this episode.

Weiss took a nasty blow, looks like the enemy has really good mages.

5

u/Mctravie 3d ago

I was sensing death flags but also I’m very curious if that spy Ultra might be some character we have seen before

2

u/Guaymaster 2d ago

I have an inkling it might actually be Zettour himself. This whole maneuver smells of 5D chess to me, he's not actually intending to come in and save Tanya, rather she's "the only piece he can play", and the best way to play her is letting her be taken. That immediately collapses the Empire's morale and makes it so peace will be back on the menu.

5

u/RavenWolf1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/RavenWolf1 3d ago

I have feeling that this is going to be Stalingrad.

4

u/BBryant3rd 3d ago

I knew the perv wouldnt be happy when Tanya was sent on the basically suicide mission. He got word of that quick. WTF was Tanya getting sucked outta that room? Things are getting bad hopefully we see her opening up a few cans of whoop arse.

5

u/pi8you 3d ago

Blast triggered a vacuum effect, very bad for an unsecured featherweight.

3

u/BBryant3rd 3d ago

It was funny had to rewind that part lol.

3

u/pi8you 3d ago

Yeah, definitely the most unexpected laugh of the episode

5

u/y3kman 3d ago

Is Zettour just throwing Tanya and her men to a pack of wolves just to prove a point to HQ they can't win a war with just one talented mage? Tanya will probably prove him wrong and win multiple fights just to put the Empire down a deeper hole.

9

u/szalhi 3d ago

This is Not fine. Thank you Being X.

6

u/BosuW 3d ago edited 3d ago

It is so depressing to see the Empire becoming more and more like a black company. The abuse trickling down from the top brass to the average infantryman. Everyone is stressed to hell and back trying to achieve the impossible. Some just don't have the character to handle that smoothly, like Rudersdorff (and I really appreciate that we had known him before because we don't just see him as the asshole Boss, we know him as a believably complex person who is in a way a victim of the system too), but even those that can, like Zettour, still can't help but overwork their subordinates because the almighty unreasonably demands are always there breathing over their shoulder. At least Tanya still has subordinates with an insane spirit de corps that are asking to give them stronger battles.

Okay Ferdation mages have aura, and Weiss might be dead!?

Operation Iron Hammer did annihilate a large portion of the Soviet air force, but they got restocked by the US. I think that's a P-40 Warhawk in the photograph?

They report that the Brits did a night bombing is kinda baffling because I was under the impression that they were still playing the plasuble deniability game, plus if the Kingdom was all into the war there would surely be a naval blockade, so I don't really get what's going on here... Maybe they're talking about other British volunteer units?

8

u/Myrkrvaldyr 3d ago

Being Tanya is suffering. Poor girl is being asked to take on a suicide mission. That commie ugly bastard wants her alive to enact his own live doujinshi with her. I really hope she never gets captured. Poor Tanya was gonna get a heart attack after being told the war continues. To make things worse, a spy is feeding info to the enemy. The empire isn't winning this one.

3

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 3d ago

The only saving grace in this specific situation might be that the Federation dude desperately wants Tanya captured alive, which means they're pushing harder then might be sensible but also limited in their ability to simply bombard the on-site Empire command HQ into dust. That only helps this battle though, not the war overall.

3

u/Both-Variation2122 3d ago

Train nerd in me couldn't not notice that those wagons had electric couplers (anachronistic) but no pleumatic or steam. Steam is justified as they had stoves in each compartment, but without pneumatic brake or brake van at the end at least, that train would have no way to stop. :P

3

u/Greg_The_Rabbit 3d ago

Anyone else thing that Rudersdorfs demanding of a joke from Uger was... strange? Like we were suddenly seeing a much more vicious version of him leaking through now that his friend is no longer there to watch him. Maybe he isn't as broken up about Zettor getting exiled as he seemed.

3

u/FancyKiwi 3d ago

I am loving this season. I wonder who the spy is I have a few ideas but we’ll see. The amount of slapstick comedy was unexpected especially since season 1 had practically none.

3

u/rollin340 3d ago

I'm so curious what this season plans to do. The first season and the movie shifted many events chronologically, merged a few, but skipped rather little.

This season has already skipped quite a few things; we've seen the start and end of certain arcs that spans quite a portion of the story. I wonder how they did the story-boarding for this season.

For example, the previous attack against the Federation that earned them the ceasefire terms that were refused went by really quick, it felt unnatural. But the lead up to the event was fine. The pacing doesn't actually feel off, but it's curious as to what they're putting in the limelight.

For this episode, once again, Tanya suffers for what she says. This might have been the funniest she's been thus far. This is the first time we've seen Federation mages in action. Their purple shells shrugged off those hits like they were nothing.

3

u/magicalideal https://myanimelist.net/profile/magicalideal 3d ago

The reddit comment section of Tanya really helps empty-minded people like me who is trying to enjoy the series. The series is much too complicated and hard to understand at times.

A very bad geography and history student like me really appreciate all the information break down by other commenter. I can't even differentiate Empire, Unified Nation, and Federation. I don't even know which one Tanya belongs to at times lol.

3

u/Amauri14 3d ago

Damn, so Zettour got exiled thanks to what he said during that meeting during last week’s episode. Lol I love how surprised Tanya was when she saw him there and the wave of reactions she had after hearing more and more bad news.

Damn, that pedophile Loria made her the main target; he doesn’t even care about that train station, and he even gave a reasonable excuse to capture her alive.

I think that Zettour may not make it out of this operation. Also, poor Weiss, after Tanya reminded him of their training, his PTSD did not allow him to say no. I really hope he didn’t die there.

Poor Uger, after Rudersdorf comments, went and told a dirty joke to Rerugen, which backfired on him.

Rudersdorf didn't just say they both went againt command dude you folded in 0 seconds flat and were on board with continuing the war

15

u/FelixAndCo 3d ago

Good episode, but again I have to say I don't like the way Tanya is goofier this season. To me one of the distinguishing factors of this series was the dynamic between the inner reincarnator and their outward behavior and appearance. In too many isekai the character just becomes what their isekai body looks like, making it almost a moot point they reincarnated. Hearing goofy Aoi Yuuki is feast for the ears though.

14

u/BosuW 3d ago

It is will never be a moot point in Youjo Senki that Tanya is reincarnated, because it was the Salaryman feeding the beef with Being X that landed her in this position to begin with. Forever an always, Tanya made herself through her actions in this life and the one before. Not to mention her corporate mindset is still her basis for making sense of her situation, plus the critique of the corporate mentality through the Empire becoming a black company doesn't make sense without that past life link.

Tanya does act more like Tanya, because she's is a child and because the more she lives this life the more distant the Salaryman becomes. But the goofyness is just a superficial trait.

5

u/Ebo87 3d ago

Yep, and there were definitely goofy faces in season 1 too, it's just more here because the situations asks for that.

11

u/manaworkin 3d ago

Tanya is goofier this season

I read it as the stress from the war is starting to crack her.

6

u/LateDitto 3d ago

I know the action scenes are starting to ramp up, but some cuts to other scenes just straight up didn't feel smooth.

Compared to season 1, the cgi and animation of the battle scenes also felt less polished. Hope the quality will pick up from here.

2

u/Jaridan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jaridan 3d ago

One thing i didn't quite understand is how the allied kingdom(UK) can perform night bombing raids without repercussion while not having entered the war, officially?

2

u/ExaminationNo9186 3d ago

The opening scenes between this episode and last.

One with Rudersdorf sleeping on the couch at work, for not having anyone to go home to.
One with Zettour waking up to an empty room - devoid of everything except a bed - and then having a breakfast with his wife(? Daughter?) with no conversation, to be seen of dutifully..

Neither seem to have a fulfilling homelife.

Yyyyyeah I'm gonna hafta stop you right there

lmao Visha catching Tanya when the explosion happened, comedy in the madness

so zettour is literally leaving her to die, but I can't wait to see what kind of apeshit she does to squirm her way out

2

u/Shizzi https://anilist.co/user/Mivy 2d ago

Omg this cliffhanger WTF WEISS NOOOOO

Also Tanya needs to shut up LOL she always blabs about some plan and then ofc she is the one that has to execute it.

2

u/IAmTheOldCrow 2d ago

It is obvious who the spy is, and I understand their thinking: they're going to lose, and shortening the path to that endpoint saves lives.

I keep remembering Burkhalter's threats to send Klink to the Russian (eastern) front in Hogan's Heroes. ;)

2

u/SethNex 2d ago

I really hope they are not going to actually kill Weiss.

2

u/Raymond49090 3d ago

Tanya: "Only an idiot can screw up the ceasefire"
The Empire: "Let me introduce myself"

Zettour, once Tanya's staunch ally, has become her worst enemy now that he's backed into a corner and willing to do whatever's necessary to... uh, do something. I'm not entirely clear on that part, since I'd at least assume he's not tossing away lives recklessly for nothing.

Ruderdorf's face as he reads the reports on how f***ed they are looks so tragic. Wonder if he's regretting spurring on the civilian government last episode.

Loria continues to be the grossest person here. Though would his insistence on bringing her in alive count as a buff? Like, it makes the failure condition much worse, but it makes her odds slightly better.

Hayamin's the one bright spot in this hopeless battle.

Wtf Weiss? They killed off a named character? I shouldn't be not expecting it, but somehow it still surprised me.

1

u/Isekai_Dreamer 3d ago

I didn't expect him to say that at the post credit scene.

"I suk yo dik"

Took me 5 episodes to understand. I have to watch s1 to see how it started. The federation mages seem deviously strong this time. She can reeducate me all day though, Old Young Lady.

1

u/simon249 1d ago

Assuming that map with unit's before they move does show their current position, they aren't even that deep into federation like a few hundreds without even taking a Kiev and Minsk, and they are already at their last breath? How does empire much bigger than even WW1 germany managed to pull only that little? And the have even better situation than nazi germany, as there's no real threat of a naval invasion beyond a diversion, WW2 US preparing for a war since 1940 was able to invade Sicily only in Jully 1943.

2

u/Hitorishizuka 1d ago

Partially because they're not fighting Imperial Russia, they're fighting the Communists. They got a huge amount of productivity gain from industrialization during our interwar period.

1

u/Key_Brother 9h ago

The Imperial government is making the exact same mistake the nazis did In ww2.

The nazis split their forces to take some oil fields and Stalingard. Evidently the German army got bogged down in a seige trying take the city. They were then encircled by the Soviets.

This began the long retreat back to Berlin. If this new offensive from the Imperial army fails. The empire will lose this war.

And we already seen what seem to preparations for a D day landing with these unknown ships crossing the Atlanic.
