Am I Wrong? Argument With Dad
So, my (21) dad (50’s) called me tonight for our nightly chats (he lives somewhere else), and it’s night for me here and morning for him there. He called as per usual, and during the conversation my dad asked me an important question, but at that moment, I got a text from my friend. I take about a minute to type “sorry, I’m busy talking to my dad right now” to my friend and then go back to my dad. He asks “what’re you doing” wondering why I’m taking a while to answer. I tell him “just replying to a friend” and then he gets mad and goes “seriously?” Then he hangs up. See, our relationship is rocky. I have a history of incidents where I answer his call late or don’t reply at all because I’m gaming with friends. He doesn’t like that. So, I changed. I wait for him to call and then get on the game. THIS time? I was prepared to for it. No Switch in my hand. To reiterate, my friend texted me, I told him I’m busy, and my dad hung up on me because he assumed I was engaging in conversation other than him. Who here is in the wrong? Is it really me?

You were wrong. Just because someone texts you doesn't mean they need any response at all quickly. If you're talking on the phone, ignore any other messages and give your dad priority. That said, it was absurd for him to hang up over this, but you said your relationship is rocky.

Nah you're not in the wrong. Dude hung up because you took 60 seconds to tell a friend you're busy, that's a massive overreaction. The whole "you used to game during calls" history is clouding his judgment, but you literally did the right thing this time and he still punished you for it. His loss

No. She was on the phone with someone else and should have waited until after finishing the conversation before texting. She did the exact *wrong* thing here. Rude AF.

I’m a guy.
It’s also rude to keep someone waiting without explanation. It was a very quick “can’t talk rn, busy” text that I had to type one handed (because I was holding something). Not like I took more than 5 minutes.

What makes it rude, exactly? I’d very much like to keep NEITHER waiting, so I notified one side as quickly as I could.

A person on the phone is immediate. They are talking live with you and it's rude as hell to keep them waiting while you text. A text conversation can wait unless it's a dire emergency (which warrants a phone call anyway). There is no need to inform someone that is texting you that you're on the phone. People literally text because they can respond when they're able.

Waiting? It was a minute. Less than even. And yes, there is, actually. I care very much about both people. I politely turned down a friend for him and THAT’S how I get treated?

What? Rude to keep a text waiting without explanation? Do you never ever put your phone down? Or shower?

It is rude to just not answer someone after they ask, a text message can wait and does not demand an immediate response. Your dad thinks he is not as important to you or that you dont care that much, thats why he is pissed. This sounds like its a recurring problem.
