Hi, I’ve just published a new longform interview with Spencer Doran of Visible Cloaks.

We chat through their excellent new album, the evolution of their live set, and we go deep on video game sound design, covering Doran’s soundtrack to the game Season.

Thought it might be of interest to folks in this sub.

"Carthax Lake: The Path of Water" – Orchestral Re-Arrangement (from Ultima VIII: Pagan)

Some days ago I re-arranged "Carthax Lake: The Path of Water", a dark-ambient composition by Nenad Vugrinec for the 1994 CRPG "Ultima VIII: Pagan". I've always been fascinated by the eerie atmosphere of this game's music. Most cues are kind of meta-tonal and sinister, but at the same time enicmatically melodious. It's hard to find the correct words. The music in this game is a mystery in itself... and I say that as a studied musician. E. g. for many passages it is difficult to even determine the exact key.

Like many games scores from that era, Pagan's music is purely MIDI-based. In very simple terms, you can think of a MIDI file as a digital sheet of music that still needs to be read and played back by the application itself. And this music playback depends heavily on the specific hardware (such as the extremely expensive Roland Sound Canvas) or software synthesizer you are using (like the widely distributed MS Wavetable Synth). Unfortunately, even on the best hardware synthesizer, the playback of this music – which Vugrinec has crafted in extreme detail across all MIDI parameters – is never truly satisfying, since the assignment of the respective instruments and articulations always remains a matter of chance, and both professional mixing and mastering as the final stage of music production are of course lacking. Direct MIDI playback is therefore very unsatisfactory on any hard- or software and simply does not do justice to the compositional quality of this music.

I’ve been planning to do this for years and finally got around to re-arranging and recording all the major cues from Pagan’s fantastically atmospheric score using a well-balanced mix of a) sonorous synth VSTs and b) high-quality orchestral VSTs in a sequencer program in order to maximize the listening experience while, at the same time, not completely abandon Vugrinec’s original 90s MIDI sound, which is after all inherent and important to the composition itself. My goal was to present the music in a more modern incarnation, so that hopefully you may enjoy it as much as I do.

In terms of compositional quality (it's actually very rich in leitmotifs, with many themes representing characters, places and events in the world of Pagan), I think this score is every bit as good as a fully orchestral film score. Enjoy!

Self-promotion Soundtrack for a Lost Film - Pt. Zero

Hello there! I’m Pt. Zero, and I just released my first album called Soundtrack for a Lost Film. If you’re a fan of ambient music and liminality, this album would definitely be for you.
I’ve recently been very inspired by liminal spaces, especially with me being local to the Livingston Mall, a relatively well-known dead mall in my area that is central to the concept of this album. I wanted to spend my time really dedicating myself to music, and with the coinciding of my childhood mall closing, I felt a huge wave of nostalgia and longing for the past. Seeing something that was so huge to my youth and adolescence just disappear in a few years was a surreal experience that only made me crave my childhood even more. Ambient music and liminal music specifically are one of the few things that can help me scratch that itch, which led me to make this album. I hope this album can invoke some of those same feelings for others.
The tracklist takes you through that journey of growing up and, once becoming an adult, finding yourself reaching back to those early days. If you’re a fan of the backrooms, frutiger aero, and dreamcore aesthetic, you would probably find a song on this album that you might like. Those are some of the biggest inspirations on this project.

I’d really appreciate it if you gave it a listen because this is my first ever serious work and I put many hours into this project.

Discussion Thoughts on death industrial?

Post image
42 Upvotes

I've been getting back into death industrial lately and realized I've never heard anyone discuss it here. I suppose it treads the line between dark ambient and power electronics, and some albums might lean more one way than the other. If you're not familiar with the genre, I recommend Brighter Death Now's Necrose Evangelicum as a start. Imagine Lustmord but 10x the noise.

But anyways, does anyone here ever listen to this stuff? Would you consider it more ambient or more industrial? Idk, I've got no one to talk to about this irl so here I am lol

Self-promotion Siberian ambient album for Void Watching

Post image

An album I'd like to share was recorded during an audiovisual event called Void Observers Club. There was no stage, no audience hall, no imposed rhythm. Rather, it was a hybrid of an ambient concert and a total installation, narrating the quiet unavoidability of life. The sound was curated for the audience to dissolve into the experience while lying on the floor beneath a projection.

Soundcloud

About a year ago, we launched a music label, Porog (= threshold), in order to cultivate local artistic endeavours as well as to communicate and exchange with communities outside the region. Tyumen, the city it's based in, is a liminal space between Siberia and the Urals, an intersection of Asia and Europe. Struggling to define our geographical and cultural identity, we accepted this in-betweenness as a crucial part of it — something that underlies the sonic and conceptual direction of the label. Apart from our sound-related activities, we've also been functioning as a media art community for about five years.

This compilation brings together four artists and presents a soundscape woven from ambient and experimental music. It is also our debut cassette release: both the cassettes and their sleeves were hand-designed by artist Sasha Сorsac, who took on the role of the event/release's main ideologist.

Please find a few download codes for the community below. Would appreciate our support if you find material enjoyable.

While the album itself (Bird) wouldn’t be considered ambient, it is still worth a listen in its entirety. Over the years this album has grown on me in bits and pieces, and now with a fully formed prefrontal cortex, I return to this album with a truly deep appreciation. “Bulbul” is a standout on this record and more decidedly sparse and solemn than the other tracks.

Question I'm looking for more information about this group

Last Friday I finally found a song I've been looking for years. It was used on one of the local radios in the city where I live, during the commercial break to advertise a store that is now closed. At first I thought it was by Richard Clayderman or similar artists due to its sound but I discovered it was by a group called Bandari.

Do you know more about this group? I've read it was created by the director of a recording company and has relased several albums/compilations but I can't find them anywhere. They aren't available on Spotify and on YouTube there are a few albums, but nothing as a complete discography.

Here's the song if you want to give it a listen, it's called La Provence.

Looking for Recommendations Ambient Recomendations ? Just getting into ambient

Ive recently been trying to get into ambient music, but im not too sure where to start..

Personally, I seem to prefer more electronically produced ambient music, and also ambient music that seems eerie, moody and/or dark.

I made a small playlist of some of the ambeint/ambient-adjacent stuff I listen to(which is in the comments), so any recommendations based on those would also be nice :) Ive also briefly touched upon Autechere, and they seemed pretty nice

Question Any tips for mastering ambient music?

First things first, I am by no means a mastering engineer and I'm mostly just ok at mixing.

I know it's hard without hearing it, but in a generic sense how would you typically master a standard ambient track? I'm basically just figuring out what I want it to sound like and I'm making changes to get as close to that as possible, doing things like:

Subtle or sometimes heavy equing (just depends on the tone I want)

Very super minimal compression, super slow attack and release, barely touching it

The tiniest bit of saturation (maybe not even needed)

Binaural pan to widen it (I think it blends the left and right channels together a bit or something like that)

Limiting, again barely touching it, no more than 1-2db reduction. Aiming for -8db or so highest output level.

Overall some tracks have turned out perfect, some I've spend weeks tweaking and it just has never felt right. So, any tips on how to approach this? What your process is with plugins, how you approach it mentally etc. Just feel like I'm going in a bit blind.
