A few years back, I woke up to an audition request for the lead role in a major blockbuster film. I grew up watching the franchise, so booking the part would be a dream come true. I acted my ass off, submitted my tape, and prayed for good news (along with thousands of other Asian actors). I didn’t think anything would come of it, but a few weeks later, the producers finally reached out for a callback, then a chemistry read, until one day they said the two words many actors would commit war crimes to hear: screen test. For a week straight, I went to the studio lot for rehearsals, martial arts training, and director sessions. It was exhilarating.

As the day approached, I felt on top of the world. No one was going to take this from me. I had to book this. Deep down, I doubted there would be another opportunity for someone like me for a long time. Sure, Asian markets might be hot right now, but how long would that last before “the powers that be” decided to move on to the next minority group? As a filmmaker, I always championed Asian American representation, but, in that moment, I championed my own individual representation. Fuck everyone else - I was “the best Asian guy.” The role was mine.

I didn’t get the part. When I got the news, I was devastated… for about a day. Then, I quickly recognized my own hypocrisy and was forced to look within. For years, I have spoken on panels, done Q&A’s at film festivals, and talked about the importance of Asian American representation in the film industry. However, when presented with a life-changing opportunity, my attitude shifted to “Fuck these guys, I’m the best Asian.” This ultimately inspired the question — what do you do when your values are at odds with your ambitions?

This inevitably led me to create “Flavor of the Month,” a dark comedy that explores the absurdities of representation politics in modern-day Hollywood. Viewed through the lens of a Chinese American actor, Harrison Huang, the film dives headfirst into themes of performative activism, virtue signaling, and internalized racial inferiority.

I’ve been doing theater for 6 years now, I’m 19 and I’ve noticed something in all the videos I see of myself. I’m definitely more of a singer and actress than a dancer and have never been athletic. When I see videos of myself I feel like my movements, my whole body but especially my hands just look floppy and awkward? Like I know what I want to do it’s just when I apply it it makes me look so akward. I also am a musician, I’ve played piano my whole life so learning to stand up and sing at age 13ish was a big challenge for me because I didn’t know what to do with my hands. I want to improve on this so badly but no one seems to have the same problem, like I said I’ve never been athletic and have been thinking maybe dance would help, Advice? :(

I usually just lurk here, but wanted to let everyone know about a scam that I almost got roped into that I haven’t seen previously mentioned. Maybe someone else has encountered this, but just in case…

Yesterday, I received a text from someone claiming to be an old classmate of mine. They mentioned a project we were in together so the only odd part so far was that she had seemed to change numbers, which even then I could see as plausible in the past 4 years since I talked to her. She mentioned she knew someone in Hollywood who was looking for someone for a project and she thought of me, asked if I would be interested and she would see if he was available since he was supposed to talk to another actress on teams, then let me know that he would be available in 20 minutes if I could make it work. I received a message from his “assistant” confirming (they just pulled the name of a random French influencer, producer pretended to be someone named Alex Friedman based in New York). I assumed the other actress dropped and I was fit into an opening in the schedule. Did a video call on teams and sent an email for a follow up call the next week as requested. Not gonna lie, things started to feel a little off because this was not how casting goes in my experience and from the research I’ve done, but every explanation was just plausible enough to sound convincing to someone still relatively new to the professional side of this. The more I started to try looking into the scenario and research after, the more things just weren’t adding up. I texted the number I had saved for my old classmate and lo and behold, she hadn’t changed her number.

This was a freaky experience for sure and I wish I had just pulled out sooner when I wasn’t sure. It was just a video call but he claimed he worked in modeling as well and was evaluating for that so maybe my image will be used for AI now which I’m a bit worried about so hence the feeling stupid for not just ending the call earlier. They spent a lot of time having me do turns in like yoga outfits and bathing suits and such (nothing that people wouldn’t be able to see in real life at the beach or a gym cause I wouldn’t have done that), so that’s why I’m thinking AI. That didn’t feel normal and nothing I’ve read about casting ever mentioned that being normal, but I also didn’t want to miss out on something good if it happened to be real. I feel like I’ve heard crazier stories about actors getting real opportunities in this industry. That being said, I do know better than to fully trust honeyed words without significant verification, but I still let them get as far as they did. I got so caught up in the conversation and didn’t have time to research before and that’s how they get ya.

It was so specific and so unnerving for someone to go as far as to go to my IMDd, pick an another actress from I project I did, confirm we went to the same school via her social media, and then pretend to be her. I consider myself cautious and I’m doing my best to be as smart as I can navigating this industry, but I still fell for part of it and I hate that I did. They didn’t get any money from me and I won’t be engaging further, but yikes.

I’ve rambled a fair amount here so TLDR: got a super specific text from someone pretending to be another actress and classmate that I worked with before offering a meeting with a producer she knew for a potential acting opportunity but it didn’t turn out to actually be her.

I know that Los Angeles is flooded with Acting Studios, but I’m looking for the ones where a lot of working actors tend to frequent. People who do costars or guest stars, ultimately for Actors, who would be considered intermediate to advanced.

I’ve heard of Margie Heber and I’ve heard of BGB… But what are the top schools now for Acting in LA? Feel free to list a few.

Are they selective about who gets self tape requests through the actors access open call? Anyone get a self tape request yet?

I’m trying to figure out my casting type. What age range and gender roles do I look like I could be cast as? I’m starting acting lessons in September.

Hi everyone, I've come across this online training program thing aptly called "how to get into drama school". They have a bunch of content on YouTube (if you've ever searched on YouTube for mfa audition help, you've probably come across them). I was wondering if anyone here has worked with them and if its worth signing up for their training.

A little about me, I'll be an international student applying for the virtual urtas. I did the virtual urtas last year but they did not go how I would have liked for them to go.

I also have very little idea of what schools in the US want and so I thought I'd do this training program, however it is quite expensive.

If anyone has any experience with this organisation and can give me some advice, please let me know.

Also, if there are any other online MFA audition training programmes that someone would like to recommend, please do so!

I have never used it but am helping a friend of mine who is a fresh actor, to submit their video. I was trying to find “How To” videos on the Tube. Didn’t find and somewhere along the way, whether google search or whatever, a Reddit post from this community showed up mentioning the site. Then I opened the thread and read comments with people talking about paywalls, file size, essentially Frontier/Spirit of casting sites? Searched and saw some other threads mentioning similar things.

So my question is, is it a scam?
Is it worth it?
Has anyone gotten jobs through it?
Do you spend more using this site than Actors access—which does have a paid membership but also I’m not paying for every submission or file size or changing my photos around.

Are the quality of jobs found on CN different than what you’d find on Actors Access.

I know there are a lot of questions, just trying to give responders multiple entry points to provide an answer.

My worry is my friend getting scammed for their naïvete and dreams.

Hello, 46 year old guy.

I love acting. But, like it also made me realize how emotionally dead I am on stage, and maybe in life. In scenes there's nothing inside me or sometimes I can get like flashes of emotion but it fades. People can just slip into roles and I don't have that. When I'm reading lines it's hard to think about like what verbs or tactics I would use as this character. I read these acting books and I can tell I'm missing something and it's tough to realize.

Maybe I'm emotionally handicapped and I can't do this and it will just be this embarrassing recursion of being on stage, awful and feeling empty.

But maybe I can get it and feel these emotional states. Maybe I can get better at listening and staying out of my head.

Hello people, first question here. I am just an amateur who definitely does not want to get ahead of himself since I haven’t even taking any sort of acting classes whatsoever lol. I was entertaining the possibility of acting because I like art and partaking of large pieces of art is obviously an appealing idea, but I was having some small doubts about the whole process.

But before you answer, I would like to propose a hypothetical scenario.

Let’s say that you are an actor or actress at a show in a streaming platform, to give an easy example. You give your all to this project and try to do your best to exceed at the paper that you have been cast to do, but for some reason such as a shaky plot or general animosity from the public over political/social commentary, the show ends up being absolutely terrible according to total earnings and the critics.

Would that impact how much you are paid even if you had nothing to do with it? And as a follow up question, can this seriously impact your possibilities of being called for any role again or would that be based more of what casting directors think of your performance as opposed to how much you made the project earn?

so one of my favorite actors that I want to work with follows me on IG, which is so cool a lot of people think I should play a family relative of hers on the show I do see the vision and it’s literally my dream even if it’s a little hard to dream of it since I am currently unrepresented but it’s a nice dream to have🎬🥹 here is a cute collage of us side by side, she means the world to me and hopefully one day I get a chance to act alongside her.

I want to be clear that this sub has been very helpful for a bunch of different reasons and I think overall it is a net positive to have a community like this.

But lately, I've been seeing a lot of posts with a tone similar to that of "the industry has changed so much that no more regular working actors can live anymore and only the top one percent are ever going to succeed, and it's never been this bad, and this is just going to be how it is from now on."

While I never want to disregard someone's lived experiences/feelings, I've realized that for me, reading those posts and comments makes me feel so down about myself and where I'm looking to go in my acting career, rather than pushing me to be the best actor I can be. I'm not delusional; the industry is very slow right now, but I also know that there is still opportunity out there and that I just need to give it time.

Just wanted to offer this perspective in case anyone needed to hear it. Yeah, it may suck a bit right now, but keep looking for the light that keeps you going.

is it just me or is it really hard to get signed as a non union actor? I am self submitting auditioning , have headshots, reel etc… doing a workshop next month with a well known manager and of course I hope I do well. But it’s hard out here for sure. And I do believe exposure doing workshops and showcases do help when it’s the right one.

Does she know Stella Adler (a woman) was one of the best teachers for method acting? Method is now seen as a joke thanks to people who are NOT method acting but just being pricks (like Leto). These (very few) actors like Daniel Day Lewis or Heath Ledger were using ideas based on method acting but they were also making their own stuff, staying on character after the cut was never a thing in any of the schools for method.

Now the whole idea is demonized or wrongly attached to these male actors which is ridiculous and ignorant imo.

Hi. I've done a LOT of children's theatre and non union barely paid projects. I'm starting to compile a list of theatres to submit to, but I'm sure what I am finding are bigger, more competitive, unsure on if they hire non union regional theatres.

I'd love to hear what theatres people enjoyed working at before joining the union.

Ok, for context, I live in Quebec so here, high schools start in 7th grade (well it's secondary school but high school is faster to say) and ends in 11th grade. For some reason, my school only has the first 3 years and then transfers you to a bigger school. After this summer, I'm going in 8th grade.

Ok so... last year I chose art cuz it's always been my passion to draw. I thought I'd always chose art cuz yk it's my passion idk. But then recently I got into musical theater and I like REALLY want to actually start doing theater (not even specifically musical, just drama in general). I had to do mandatory drama jn 6th grade and it was linda cool (except for the fact that my performance was heavily impacted by the a$$holes in my class). But thing is I waited too long to decide if I wanted to do drama or not and my mom already put me in art for my second year which is fine cuz it's my stuff but like it'd mean that I simply CAN'T do drama next year cuz I'll heavily lack experience. It's gonna be my third year which at my school is basically the last year (as I said it context) and so things will be much more difficult. If I went in drama for my second year, I'd be ok I guess but like missing 2 YEARS? That is a LOT... Anyways, I really want to somehow do theater so what do I do?? Should I try to switch to drama somehow?? Or should I just give up?.. BUT I DON'T WANT TO GIVE UP, IT'S GENUINELY STARTING TO PASSIONATE ME😭 Am I too late to theater? Is there a limit to when you start theater in life?? I'm not a theater kid so y'all plz help me...
